The Legend Reborn

Carakki

I finally saw it.

There were only three parts I didn't like:

  1. Mata Nui's "together...as one mind" line. Totally out of place.
  2. Tuma and his battle with Mata Nui. They got Tuma's character all wrong.
  3. There was a third to put here last night, but it ran away in Spanish class this morning.

How did they get Tuma's personality wrong? It seems to me (from EotS) that he's a leader who feels he needs to prove himself to his people. He knows what is expected of him as a leader, magnifies that expectation, and thus makes rash judgements (like going to see the Sisters of the Skrall, or believing the traitor's word when he claims to know how to defeat the Baterra). You notice also how he reacts to any insinuations by Stronius (a trusted associate; perhaps even a friend) that he is making a bad decision. The fact that he'd make over-the-top threats and take over-the-top risks is just an example of how he simply can't afford to let himself appear intimidated by Mata Nui or any being.

I think Carakki's referring to the fact that Tuma seems "dumbed down" when he wasn't portrayed as such in the other parts of the story.

I didn't like the "Great Destroyers" bit from Kiina. That was really the most pathetic quote in the whole movie. Well...if you don't count every line Berix has. :P

The point is, though, that he's not "dumbed down"-- he's approaching the situation in the way the Skrall would consider appropriate. Tuma was appealing to his audience, and that was what cost him that fight (which need not have happened if he were more confident in his authority over the Skrall-- he could have merely set his legions upon Mata Nui and leave it at that). He's insecure about his rule, and he overcompensates for his supposed lack of support by making rash statements and decisions.

He was most certainly dumbed down. Though I agree that he needed to appeal to his crowd, I doubt that the Tuma we knew before The Legend Reborn's release would not have just knocked down Mata Nui, then turned and raised his weapons to the crowd, simultaneously exposing his weak spot. He wouldn't be that stupid. As far as Empire of the Skrall goes, Tuma didn't just decide to ride off to the Sisters - he went as a last resort, and with a backup plan.

Who says he knew he had that weak spot? Or that Mata Nui would have any fight in him at all after that attack (since let's face it, Mats had been a bit of a pushover until that point)? The most he could have expected was a minor slip up-- after that one strike, however, he had no choice but to continue the fight or be seen as a coward.

You do have a point about the backup plan in EotS, but it was still an incredibly risky decision.
