> Important < Regarding The Recent Spam E-mails

So, I've seen this come up a couple times in New Member Q&A and I thought I'd put this out there for all you.

It seems that recently spam e-mails are being sent to a number of BZPower members. Now normally spam e-mails wouldn't be a big deal. But I NEVER get spam e-mails, so it's given me reason for at least slight concern. Especially since I've received a second one today.

These e-mails seem to come from some random person. It's not the same person each time though. The e-mail is, first off, advertising something. Seems like clothes and the like are the general thing. At the end of the e-mail is also a link to some "wto-store" website. Naturally I didn't click the link. One thing to note though is that the e-mail is decidedly not professional. If it was really a run-of-the-mill store ad, why would they be using such poor language? Below is a copy of the second e-mail as I've already deleted the first. I'm pretty sure they didn't say the exact same things though. I'll point out some note-worthy mistakes.

Dear (why would they say "dear"?),

We are a exported ("an" is the correct word here) online company in foreign trade for many years all over the world and gain certain market shares and excellent reputation.(This sentence as a whole seems jumbled.)

We sell,(extra comma?)Abercrombie & Fitch ,Nike shoes,UGG Boots,Trademark Bag (lack of spaces between commas and words) ......

etc.pls be free to contact us (Wut?), we promise excellent quality and challenging price for you. further information, pls visit (No capitalization, should probably have "For" at the beginning, lack of space after comma, and again with the "pls") [removedwebsitehere]

Thanks for your time.

If that's not suspicious I don't know what is. Also take note that the e-mail contained no images. Don't advertising e-mails usually try to use some sort of flashy images?

Further, it does appear so far to me that it's only affecting BZPower members. BZPower is where I first heard of this and so far nobody else in my family has received any such e-mails. Just me, member of BZPower. Also, among the list of other e-mails this was sent to (meaning everyone else it was sent to can know see YOUR e-mail address) were some quite obvious Bionicle/Lego-related addresses, one such having something regarding the Barraki in it.

I just thought I'd put this out there. Anyone else getting these e-mails aside from the ones who made topics in Q&A? If so, are other non-bzpower affiliated addresses getting this?

No, the advertising text in the e-mail is pretty standard for spam e-mails which are always canned because of the mass sendings. The senders don't personalize. Nor are they flashy, they usually just contain a link. (don't you ever open any spam emails for fun?)

The senders are also usually foreign hence the bad English. In case of the dear, there was probably originally some code that had it say Dear *your email here*. In many cases, the senders will pervert the spelling to bypass spam filters.

Is it a possibility that the senders are using the "e-mail" function in profile fields?

I have received three such emails thus far, each had a different sender's name.

I am disturbed by the fact that they seem to have somehow obtained BZP members' email addresses.

This is a pretty standard spam e-mail, I've received several like it. They all have poor grammar and spelling. I enjoy reading the occasional spam I get, it is sometimes quite hilarious. I'll even be posting a couple of mine in my blog sometime.

As for how they got BZP e-mail addresses, that is disturbing, but hopefully not a problem. I haven't received such e-mails myself (at least yet).

Nothing in mine, so either my Junk Filter is doing it's job, or there is a further selecting process

deadpool_smilie_right.png Double-posting is a not-good, pal.

Am I the only one that realizes that Every BZP member has their E-MAIL ADDRESS ON THEIR PAGE?

You're wrong.

I didn't.

Then I made an e-mail specifically for BZP.

But before that my email wasn't there. I'm pretty sure there's some setting to hide your email.

The mods can access it, I think, but otherwise normal, run-of-the-mill members can't access 'em.

So this is scary, especially since I received at least one of these.

Well, I don't have that on my current e-mail address, but then again, it's not on my profile. And I for some reason can't get in my old one, which is the one still on my page.

And while our e-mail addresses are on our profiles, I still find is disturbing how they got to see them. Because the person(s) would have to be a member, AND they would have to go to all the profiles to get the addresses.

That must be one bored guy.

It should be noted that there are some, such as myself, who choose to keep their email addresses hidden. Also, if the message was sent by that means, it would likely mention BZP somewhere in the title and open with something along the lines of "<your display name>, <spammer's display name> has sent you an email". It's been ages since I've received an email sent through BZP, so I don't remember the exact wording, but it's something like that.

We're not getting these e-mails through BZPower. It just seems like only members are getting them at their own standard addresses.

And you know what else is scary?

I keep getting these emails that ask me to validate certain email accounts I've never heard of.

They go something like this:

Verify this email address

You recently added a new email address to your Yahoo! account, or initiated verification of an existing email address. To verify that you own this email address, simply click on the link below.

If the Yahoo! ID in******* does not belong to you or if you would like to permanently stop receiving messages for this Yahoo! ID at this email address, please let us know.

Verifying your email address ensures that you can securely retrieve your account information if your password is lost or stolen. You must verify your email address before you can use it on Yahoo! services that require an email address.

For your security, please keep your email address information up-to-date. If this information changes, you can always update it by signing in to your Yahoo! account and changing it from the "My Account" area.

Verify "[myrealemail]"

If you can't click the link above, you can verify your email address by cutting and pasting (or typing) the following address into your browser:

[random gibberish url]

Not your account?

If you did not create this account, click here

And what's freak is that I don't have an email ID that starts with "in" or with "ma" (I got a second one that was identical except the "In" was replaced with "ma")

Anyone else getting these?

You just reminded me to check my email. I haven't done it for at least a month now. :P

EDIT: GMail filtered a couple into the spam box. None in my inbox.
