Bionicle: Then And Now

Dokuma

*resists the urge to edit the album cover for Asia's Then & Now compilation to fit this entry*

BIONICLE then:

"Where wisdom and valor fail, all that remains is faith. And it can overcome all."

— Toa Mata Tahu, Mata Nui Online Game

BIONICLE now:

"What do you have in mind, and does it include explosions?"

— Tahu to Onua, Reign of Shadows

I think y'all catch my drift.

In other news, I am SO PUMPED about the new website I'm doing for work. It looks awesome. 8D

But explosions = win. Besides, it's not like they can rely on the Great Spirit to solve their problems now. Protip: he's not in the universe.

Faith won't help them, they have to take action.

What Dokuma is trying to say

is that Bionicle has increased in win over the years

And this is exactly why the story has gone so downhill.

Thats the quote I used my year book. I should have put the other one in if I had the chance.

Wisdom is realizing you are totally screwed. Valor is taking this realization, throwing it to the winds, and doing what you can to lessen the odds against you and win the day. Faith is hoping the bad guys don't send in backup.

Which is why faith on its own actually tends to fail a lot. =P

Relax Dokuma, I see the problem too; sentence-awesomeness-structure has gone downhill.

It should be: "When blind-rushing and rage fails, all that remains in my repertoire is explosions. And it can overcome all."

We better get to Greg on this straight away!

Someone tell Adam Savage to say this on MythBusters.

Aw, it's okay Dokky, I know what you mean.

It's like Bionicle is turning into America or something...when all else fails, ditch the fancy words and blow things up.xD

That's why Tuyet wiped out the Nynrah Ghosts in that alternate universe; otherwise they'd invent nukes. XD

But yeah Doks. I see what you're getting at. Bionicle used to have this very mystical feel to it. With the legends, the mysterious great spirit, and all that. Now it's become more, well, your run-of-the-mill action story.

Maybe when Tahu was on Mata-Nui, he was high and accidentally replaced "Explosions" with "Faith".

Also, I hat how they made Pohatu all angry and stuff. I miss back in the day when Pohatu was this brown guy with oversized shoes and was all like "Yo mon, lets play some soccer with boulders". :P

Angry? I don't read the books, so y'all will have to fill me in. Pohatu's depicted as angry now? What happened to the hunchbacked Koli champion with the hearty laugh and sweet kicks?

Not sure about angry, but I agree that Pohatu isn't the same big brown guy that defeated giant scorpions by kicking large boulders at the supports of the cave they were in while being blind. And then super-speeding you outta there while the cave crumbled.

But that's just my MNOLG-talgia talking again. B)

If any of the Toa Mata changed, Pohatu was definitely not one of them. He still has the exact same amicable sense of humor as he did in the very first comic, and a narrative mention of Kopaka and Pohatu's friendship in Bionicle Legends#9 recalled that comic's overall attitude.

Meanwhile, the change in BIONICLE's attitude which you're mentioning, although I consider it slight, could probably be chalked up to BIONICLE: Mask of Light. For the movies, there was a deliberate intention to voice and characterize the Toa more like real heroes than like ancient deities, as had been typical of 2001 story. I personally think that was a worthwhile change.

The quotes you gave are an extreme example of this change, but the books in 2008 did a great job of demonstrating how little has actually changed in the personalities of the Toa Nuva, at least beyond the lessons in unity, etc. they had to learn, inexplicably, again... and again... and again. It was such a relief in 2006 to see that they'd finally learned something rather than never coming together as a team until the brink of disaster.
