Brickfair Mosaic Project Part 2- We Need Your Ideas!

Right, so we have less than 150 days until BrickFair. At this point in time, ChocolateFrogs and I have a semi-solid idea for the final product:

-Have a few 96x96 images (most likely four).

-Each image of a different year of the timeline.

-Start taking commitments, and if there's not enough people committed to make all four, knock off one image at a time (but we really don't want to end up doing that because this should be awesome and everyone should want to make a piece).

Something like this image[that now has a missing file. Oops.] (NOTE: these images are NOT going to be the final, they are just an example that I threw together.). If this was made into a mosaic, each individual character would be made out of nine base plates, totaling 36 baseplates in all. We'll eventually also add "Bionicle" and "BZPower.com" in small lettering as well:

mosaicidea1.jpg

And, with this layout, we wouldn't have to keep the four images in the square format: they could be separate and put at different corners of the Bionicle table(s), set into one long line, etc.

What we need from the community:

-We need to start making a list of members who can commit to making a baseplate or two (or four), and we have to start figuring this out now so we can figure out if we need to eliminate images or (maybe) add another image. Please list yourself here if you can commit to making at least one baseplate.

-If you are unable to attend BrickFair this year, you CAN still make a baseplate and mail it in. However, you'll have to include money for return shipping.

-List what your four favorite years of the Bionicle storyline are, AND provide images if you can. Remember, images need to be ones that when converted into mosaic form will still visually look good. Things such as profile shots of one or two characters will be better than intricately detailed ones of landscapes or fight scenes.

So, hop to it! I'm ridiculously excited about this, and the more community support and participation we get, the cooler this is going to turn out.

(and 200 198 191 182 174 145 days until BrickFair!!!)

Super blog entry on this. Thoughts reorganized after a nice winter break and final exam off-period.

With any luck we can get some good images for a few years.

My favorite years I would like to see would be:

2001 (Kopaka, Lewa, maybe Tahu faces)

2003 (Rahkshi head, Mask of Light)

2008 (Mask of Life (symbol))

Just some suggestions/thoughts so far. I'll look for images soon.

I would not mind buying and sending in a base plate (buying since my systems collection is not ideal for mosaic work, so I'd probably be purchasing the parts somewhere) And I'd prefer to buy green pieces, but whatever. Good to see you guys are making progress on this.

I'd be willing to chip in. I could probably do two baseplates. What happened to the idea of making a mosaic of all six Toa Mata?

Oh, and my ideal four years would be something like this:

2001: Tahu's mask? Something like the image you posted in the example.
2003: Avohkii and/or Kraahkan.
2005: Maybe a Visorak? An image of the Coliseum could also work.
2006/7/8/9: The Ignika

Those aren't my favourite years, but I think these four images would make the most sense in this case.

Ready for service Captain!

Perhaps it could be like landmarks of the series.

1. A Red Hau

2. Mask of Light

3. Ignika

4. Mata Nui Robot Head

I don't know. That's just a thought.

Maybe landmarks of the different locations too!

Well it hasn't been completely disregarded, but the image would almost require 30 baseplates and would have a wide range of colors and/or a limited amount that would not turn out too good, maybe.

Also, working with 9 baseplate segments mean we don't have to worry about the bigger commitment and instead focus our efforts in smaller means.

2001, 2002, 2004, 2006.

For 2001 I'd suggest that picture that's half infected mask, half island of Mata-Nui. Large quantities of colors like black and white will be easier to buy than, say, orange or lime green.

2002...maybe all eight Krana in different colors? One per baseplate, making a 64x128 image? Or that failing, Tahu with a Krana.

2004 could be a giant Kanoka.

2006, Voya Nui?

I like the idea of doing the dual Hau/krana image from 2002, although looking at it, it would probably require some lime or something. You'd have to run it through the filter to see how it works.

Personally, I think you should focus on one of the other Toa of 2001 instead of Tahu or the Hau. Some headshot of Onua might be cool, particularly from the comic, maybe...?

Oh, forgot to ask: Bricks or plates?

Bricks are cheaper, easier to add/remove and come in more colours. I'm not Nukaya or CF, but bricks have almost all the advantages over plates.

Bricks are the only way to go, IMO.

Might I suggest using strictly comic art? It's basically all awesome, and every year has something especially good in it. It also lends cohesion, and would look more artistic than, say, set images.

2001: Kopaka in the sun

2003: Some Rahkshi comic pic, I know there are good ones.

2007: Maybe Kalmah, not sure.

2009: Either a Skrall or the Mata Nui bot.

I don't plan on doing a plate, but I'd be willing to help you with graphics and stuff.

Best of luck, and choose wisely. Talk to someone who knows what they're talking about art-wise. Rayg maybe?

I think I know what I'm talking about art-wise....but thanks.

The comics could be pretty neat as well (lol, "all awesome". So true, though). There's a few other mosaics that a gentleman CF and I have been talking to has made that are based on a comic book images, and most of them look neat. The only thing is is that might increase the overall mosaic size....but I'll definetly start scouring some of my Bionicle comics.

Bricks.

-They're cheaper

-You can just stack extra plates and have the top color be the right one.

Considering my favorite Toa are Lewa, Kopaka, and Pohatu, I would love to see something else as the picture. I'm thinking Kopaka, with the white, grey for shadow, ice blue eyes, and then any outline, would be easiest.

And there are plenty of comic pictures that I would not want to rule out, like my favorite pic of Kopaka. (I have the bigger version as well but it's not uploading ;_; )

What program are you using to convert images into mosaic form? If it's something besides PicToBrick, I'd like to give it a whirl.

I'm using PicToBrick because I (finally) was able to get it to download a while back. I'm not sure of how many other programs there are out there....

Is PicToBrick working better than the LUGNET thign?

Also, someone suggested GIMP and different saturation levels or something. IDK, I'm not good with thsoe...

PicToBrick also tells you how many pieces you need and a couple other useful things that I can't remember at the moment.

Slow down, Bionicle Raptor, please.

First we decide on an image(s).

Then we put it in a grid.

Each grid (32x32) will have colored squares in it (example: these make up a corner of a Kanohi).

Then we calculate out how many of each color is needed for each 32x32 baseplate square.

After that we assign participating members a section and tell them how many of each, show them the picture (so they can buy 2x1 bricks, etc, if necessary, and not just all 1 studs), and they buy and/or search their collection for pieces.

(The assigning might not happen until May.)

I shall remind you, Sir!

I shall remind you every time I remember it.

You shall recall it whenever I do thus.

And when I am finished, you shall only think of the baseplates.

(And you won't have to eat a Macadamia nut for me.)

Maybe the UDD symbol with BIONICLE below it? Black background, gray text.

We have considered something like that, which could be cool. The only thing is is that other LEGO fans/public visitors might not recognize it.

It would kind of be fun to make that out of a bunch of different gears or various Bionicle pieces or something....

I have a REALLY long story to tell about making Lego mosaics that I would enjoy telling but I honestly think it would take forever to type out. So here's the shortened version. For Christmas 2007, I made Lego mosaics of 2 of my relatives. They were in grayscale (only white, black, and 3 shades of gray - no other colors) and I think they turned out magnificently. When I bought pieces to build these mosaics, I overestimated and purchased too many. Now, I'm stuck with about 3000 very light gray 1x1's and about 1,000 medium gray 1x1's that I have been storing in those pick-a-brick cans under my bed. I also have about 40 white 1x1's left over. Basically, I have thousands of mosaic pieces that I'm not using.

I can make a 48x48 mosaic in grayscale and send it in. I'd love to send something in for the Bionicle display. All I'd have to do would be order more black, dark gray, and white pieces.
