  1. Remember that this Toa Team was formed to fight the Kanohi Dragon, a large, fire breathing Rahi.

    From BS01:

The Kanohi Dragon is an immense Rahi, possessing mammoth strength. Its body is decorated by glittering scales shaped like Kanohi, which often lure unsuspecting victims into a trap. The dragon is highly susceptible to cold temperatures, with frigid enough temperatures rendering it comatose. The Vortixx employed this weakness to keep the dragon contained. It also possesses the ability to fly. It can also breath fire, and has smoldering tail blades.

There are four Toa of Ice and two Toa of Water on this team.  That's a lot of ice that's going to be melted by the dragon, in addition to the Water from Tuyet and Naho.

Now, does a Kaukau really seem that useless...

  2. I'd like to think that the Toa empire continued, with another Toa simply taking Tuyet's place after her death, and the rebellion getting imprisoned. I am fond of the idea of a Toa Empire universe still existing out there, leaving it open to a potential sequel if anyone ever wishes to visit that.

Remember that there should be an infinite number of Toa Empires, each with a slight (or perhaps major) difference.

We don't have to go back to that one.

  3.

I remember that Teridax wanted to eliminate the other Makuta, but a pretend threat is new to me, what was it?

The reason Antroz and co. thought they were being sent to the Core was to turn all the Av-Matoran into Shadow Matoran, therefore preventing any more Toa of Light from being created. I only just now realized the entire thing was a ploy to get them in the Core at the right time.

I think he legitimately wanted the the Av-Matoran converted into Shadow Matoran.  The fact that he sent the Makuta who were potential threats on that mission knowing they would die was an added bonus.

He probably would have used Great Spirit powers to eliminate them afterwards if the energy storms weren't a thing.

  4.

The masks were created, both regular and nuva, by Artakha. They were also hidden across Mata Nui by Artakha as a test.

I went to go double check this and you're right, Artahka sent all the necessary kanohi to Mata Nui.

Can I have the topic closed now?

    WAIT

Artakha was only involved in scattering the Kanohi Nuva (2003).  The Great and Noble Kanohi from 2001 had a different story.

The Great and Noble Kanohi were originally found in the Great Temple in Metru Nui.  They were brought to the island by the Toa Metru.  They hid the Great Kanohi as a test to make sure that whatever Toa arrived were not secretly servants of Makuta, and kept the noble masks for their own use after transforming.

During the Dark Time, Teridax's Rahi stole the Noble Kanohi and hid those as well.

As stated earlier, the Great Kanohi were fused into the Golden Masks and transformed into Kanohi Nuva.  The other thirty Kanohi Nuva were sent by Artakha.

  5. We were told that there were three years of story planned at the very beginning of the new series.
We know that there are three "legendary" masks: the Masks of Creation, Control, and Ultimate Power.
Given that this year's story focuses on the Mask of Creation, it does not seem to be too much of a stretch that the other two planned years will focus on the other two masks.

So what does this mean for Makuta?
Well, as others have said, he seems to have been possessed by the Mask of Ultimate Power before it was removed.  I think he will be the villain of the year that focuses on the Mask of Control (which will probably be 2016), and that a sentient Mask of Ultimate Power will be the final villain of 2017 (and thus the true villain of the three pre-planned years of the new Bionicle).  Will Makuta be redeemed for the final year?  I hope so, but I would not be surprised if they left him as a villain.

  6. EDIT 2:

Right. But where in that story does it state that is Velika the Great Being? As I recall, that was Matoran Velika, not Velika with a Great Being inside.

So, in the alternative universe, "Velika" never toke the "real Velika's" body?

    Right. He took someone else's.

Make of that what you will.

Someone on Takanuva's ruling council? Nektann, maybe? You wouldn't think a Skakdi would be one to join a ruling council of noble leaders.

Probably not worth asking Greg about any further, he probably never took the time for small details like that on alternate universes.

If it's someone from the Council, then probably the the Nynrah Ghost.  It would allow him to do the jobs that he enjoys, and explain why that particular otherwise uninteresting Matoran was on the council.

  7. Matoran minds hold (at least part of) what makes them eligible to become Toa, so Velika cannot transform.

    1) Velika cannot become a Toa, so it's irrelevant.

Wait, wait, hang on a second... What did you say?....

But in The Kingdom alternate universe, he was a Toa...

"His destiny achieved, Takanuva had sacrificed his power to bring a new generation of Toa into being. These included Toa Kapura, Toa Balta, Toa Dalu, Toa Velika, Toa Defilak, and a new Toa of Light, Tanma."

Right. But where in that story does it state that is Velika the Great Being? As I recall, that was Matoran Velika, not Velika with a Great Being inside.

Can you explain why Velika can't become a toa?

As I understand it, he's quite matoran, except for his mind, so what bars him from becoming a toa?

He's a Matoran physically, but not mentally. He does not have Matoran AI, and what's buried in the AI plays a part in whether you are destined to be a Toa or not. So a Matoran who is not really a Matoran is not going to become a Toa.

That clears that up.  Do you think that Velika not being a Great Being somehow played a part in Matoro's failure?

    EDIT: Then this happened

Right. But where in that story does it state that is Velika the Great Being? As I recall, that was Matoran Velika, not Velika with a Great Being inside.

So, in the alternative universe, "Velika" never toke the "real Velika's" body?

    Right. He took someone else's.

Make of that what you will.

  8. That is to say, if it's even necessary. Kopaka's eyepiece essentially works like a magnifying scope, and when using almost any sort of scope, you basically have to shut the non-focusing eye by necessity to see clearly. Considering that, the only change he would need to make in battle would be "shutting" his left eye instead of his right.

    Uhh, no.

Speaking from experience, you should always keep both eyes open while using your gun/bow/Midak Skyblaster.  Most classes teach that you should try to keep both eyes open but only look through one of them and ignore the information coming from the other eye.

Also, in most humans (and possibly Toa), one eye is more dominant than the other and should be the one that you shoot with.  It is possible that Kopaka (and possible all Toa) do not have a dominant eye.

  9.

Erm, Muaka = top predator. I don't recall any Rahi eating Muaka, and if there are too many of those and there isn't enough food, they might decide that the Matoran might make good dinner.

If I were a GB, I wouldn't want a bunch of out of control animal populations running around in my spaceship.

top predator? don't, like, doom-vipers or visorak or something else horrid Chirox made eat those though? there are a lot of rahi that are kinda "tied" for top predator slot in this theoretical food chain. :0

I don't think that the Visorak can really be considered part of the food chain given that not only do they not exist in the wild, only; they don't eat other Rahi, but instead absorb energy from colony drones.

Besides the Zivon preys on the Visorak, so they aren't really the top dogs (or spiders).

As for the doom viper, I really don't know.

  10.

Were the Ga-Matoran fishermen on Metru Nui? If they were, then that could imply that Matoran could consume antidermis-based creatures, but not protodermis.

Why antidermis? The only known things made of antidermis are Makuta, Kraata, and (maybe) Rahkshi.

    Rahi are made of antidermis.

    Huh?

    BS01's Rahi page:

Rahi are the fauna of the Matoran Universe, biomechanical creatures composed of organic and inorganic Protodermis

    And later

Most of the Rahi of the Matoran Universe were created by the Makuta, whose technique involved blending various Viruses in vats of Liquid Protodermis.

BS01 has had errors before, so if you have a source for Antidermis Rahi, please share it.

  11.

Well you would think that the only reason Greg would have seen these bibles was if he was involved somehow. Otherwise why show them to him to begin with? That's like saying I have no involvement in my company's new branch yet somehow got my hands on their shipping logs. Something is off there and we all know it.

Nothing's off there -- he is LEGO's resident expert on Bionicle Gen 1, and it makes sense for Gen 2, which is inspired by Gen 1 and has some allusions to it, to show him what they're planning, if for no other reason than to avoid his giving erroneous answers about it or the like, and/or as thanks for what he brought to Bionicle. :)

It does open up a window for him to give positive suggestions, but that doesn't mean he chose or was expected to use it. Quite possibly it wasn't allowed, I dunno. (Or "not involved" might not be intended to say he didn't offer some suggestions, but just means that the main planning came from others, or he didn't have any actual authority over it. Always remember Greg summarizes and "rounds up" to give a short answer most of the time. If somebody wants more detail on a short answer, his approach seems to be to let them go ahead and ask that question later. So, if you wanna know things like "did you offer any suggestions?" -- ask him. Of course, maybe he'll opt not to answer, dunno. :P)

I'll edit the quote in when I find it, but Greg claims that he was asked to give input on the story bible but that "as far as [he] knows, they chose not to use it"

  12. Marendar is sapient (and humanoid)

    1. On an earlier page, you said something about Helyrx's destiny having been completed and her ability to become a turaga if she chooses. What was her destiny?

    2. On the bionicle website, at the end of the story video, you, along with a couple others, are listed in the credits under "original story". "original" refers to gen1, then, or did you have more involvement in gen2's story? is the writers' goal to essentially redo gen1?

    3. Back to something you said on a different page (i'd provide quotes, but for some reason the site's not letting me quote right now... sad.png ) You said that Marendar was humanoid as opposed to being "abstract." Does this imply that it (he? she?) is also intelligent/sapient?

    1) Don't know. Never wrote a backstory for her, I had no need of it.

    2) I have no involvement with Gen2, nor do I think they have any interest in redoing Gen1. I did not see anything in the 2015 story bible that I read to indicate this is a retelling of Gen1 in any way.

    3) Yes

  13.

Boys don't care for female characters as much as male characters, and since they're the target audience, they get what the majority of them prefers.

this feels, no offense, like the same mindset that got us into this problem to begin with. :0

That doesn't matter. We aren't the target audience. As much as we might hate it, that's the truth. Thus, this whole shenanigan shouldn't even exist. Bionicle is targeted toward young boys, who prefer buying male characters, and that's that. We can complain all we want; the truth won't change.

The thing is, I'm not sure that "truth" is all that true.  Let's think about the nonsense that surrounded Legend of Korra's development.

According to animation director Yoo Jae-myung, Nickelodeon was initially reluctant to approve the series and suspended production because, unlike in almost all American animated series, the protagonist was a girl.  Conventional wisdom, according to Konietzko, had it that "girls will watch shows about boys, but boys won't watch shows about girls". The creators eventually persuaded the channel's executives to change their mind. Konietzko related that in test screenings, boys said that Korra being a girl didn't matter to them: "They just said she was awesome."

It seems that the marketing executives of various companies are convinced that young boys won't watch a female protagonist, but test screenings of Korra and other shows seem to disagree.

  14. Strong yes, all the 1:1 ratios, and i don't actually have any kind of opinion on the last one so I just voted yes because most of the people who vote, like, "Strong No" will take every vote yes as a personal attack and that's hilarious.

I voted "strong no" to the last one and didn't take any of the "yes" votes as personal attacks (I even made one of them for the first question).  I've always believed that the whole point of discussing things is to listen to differing opinions, which is something that cannot be done if everything is taken personally.

That being said, you just stereotyped me (and everyone with my opinion) as immature creatures incapable of facing the (in my opinion, beautiful) reality that people will not always agree, simply because we hold a different opinion than you do. THAT I do take as a personal attack.

  15. I think the tribes should have been almost mono-gendered (for example: most, but not all, Ta-Matoran would be male), but I am opposed to ret-coning anything gender related.

I voted Yes to should the tribes be dual gendered, 1:1 overall gender ratio, 3:1 or more for the per tribe ratio, but STRONG NO to changing any male elements to female.

  16. One day, I'm going to read a topic about G1 canonization that will actually stay on topic and not turn into another gender-canonizing debate... unfortunately, that is not this day.

Seriously people, we have a topic for the Su-Matoran Gender discussion.  Please discuss it there instead of bringing it up on topics where it is largely irrelevant.

As a member who gets exited when a new comment is added to a discussion that I am a part of, it is quite disappointing to see that the new comment is actually part of a different discussion that I am not a part of.  It is like some one offering me a new LEGO set and giving me only half of a MEGABLOKS set.

I am relatively new here, but I thought that the point of having more than one topic in the S&T forum was that so people who want to talk about topic A can do so, and people who want to talk about topic B can also do so.  If the people in topic A go to topic B and see that the topics are related, then by all means, they should say so.  What they should NOT do is, after mentioning topic A, continue to discuss it and drown out the people talking about topic B.

I know that I am not a moderator and that I have no authority to enforce any of this, but it seems to be common sense.

  17. This rule only exists to prevent him from accidentally contradicting himself.  Since the rule was first stated, he DID make two changes.  They are:

    1. Tahu loses his Rahkshi powers when he removes the golden armor.  (Greg decided that he wanted to ad this weakness to make Tahu less overpowered.)
    2. The Great Being who sneaked into the Matoran Universe was NOT originally named Velika.  (Greg had previously said that the Great Being kept his original name when he became a Matoran but decided that it would make more sense for Velika to be an assumed name.)

In both cases, fans on the Lego Message Boards reminded him that he was contradicting an older answer, but he said that in these two cases he was making an intentional retcon.

  18. I apologize if this come out harsh, but there is only one answer to this debate.

BZPower does not have the authority to tell LEGO what to do with their own property.  To assume otherwise is simply arrogant.

I would like to remind everybody that Greg already commented on this issue:

    (10-22-2014 08:57 AM)

There's been a debate going on about the canonization of things for old BIONICLE story, and I thought I would share my thoughts on this.

    1) First of all, the notion held in some quarters that I no longer care about old BIONICLE and will just canonize anything is wrong and a little insulting. If I did not care about old BIONICLE (or Gen1 as some people call it), I would not be spending my time answering questions on this board. I invested 10 years of my life in Gen1 and wrote over 800,000 words on it. So yes, I care.

    2) That said, one of the reasons NOT to add much to canon in the past was the possibility that Gen1 might come back in some form someday. With new BIONICLE officially a reboot, that option is extremely unlikely to happen. So allowing bits into the story here or there is not going to ruin any official plans for the future. Also, since it is also extremely  unlikely that authorization will ever come to write new chapters of old story, the only additions there can be to  old story are these minor canonizations.

    3) There are things I do  not want to do. I am not going to add new Toa elements, and I do not want to start doing a lot of retcons which is why I made the rule that if one of my answers is contradicted by pre-established canon, canon takes precedence. The kind of things I have been canonizing -- an extra Rahi for Mata Nui, a name for a Toa team -- are minor and do not ruin or retcon anything from past story. I think the hue and cry over them is a little overblown.

    4) Please keep in mind that I do  not own the story -- LEGO Company does, as they own everything to do with BIONICLE. Anything I do is done with their sufferance, and they can, at any point, declare that nothing else can be canonized if they choose to do so. They are the  only ones with the authority to do that. Any segment of the fanbase can choose to  ignore whatever they like, but they do not have the authority to shut the story down

    I repeat:

[Lego] are the  only ones with the authority to do that. Any segment of the fanbase can choose to  ignore whatever they like, but they do not have the authority to shut the story down

Can we please stop making fools out of ourselves?

  19. I found this

    Orionpaxg1 wrote:

2 Does magic exist in Bionicle? becuase the Dark Hunter Conjurer seems to think so

3 Can the golden skin fusion infuse matoran with Toa energy, or can only a Great Being do that

4 Is it possible for Miserix to regain his inner light? or become a good guy

1, 4) I don't really believe in redeeming characters, Orion. I believe a good villain is a villain for a reason, and they are not just going to suddenly turn good. They may do good things, but it will be out of their own self-interest, not because they have suddenly become virtuous.

    2) No

    3) You mean through the dream-granting power? It's a good question. I would be interested to hear what other people think on it.

    GREG, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!
..."don't really believe in redeeming characters"... Why?

    1. It's unrealistic.  (people in real life grow and change)
    2. It limit's storytelling options.  (people love redemption stories)

    No magic, that's okay.
I do agree that the possibility of Gold-Skinned Being being able to transform Matoran into Toa is worthy of discussion.

...don't believe in redeeming characters... Now I understand why people blatantly ignore Greg's LMB answers.
