I worked at an internship full time then transitioned to working part time while going to college. I also went to some baseball games, saw the Foo Fighters live, played video games, and all that other fun stuff. But mostly it's been working and doing classwork

I got a bit of news for everyone involved in Cot RPGsRPG Hosts: Due to the forum upgrade, your RPG topics have been lost. You should still be able to view them in the archived board, but you will have to remake your topic. If you are still interested in continuing your RPG, please re-post it and then PM me so I know to add it to the list of active RPGs.RPG Players: You guys are the heartbeat of the Cot RPG "universe" so to speak. Continue doing what you do best, participating in awesome RPGs.RPG Hosts in waiting: If you currently have an RPG request pending please repost it in the RPG Request topic. It will be treated like it is a new request and will require approval from all judges.Judges: Please get in touch with me ASAP to express if you wish to continue being an RPG Judge. As we transition into our new digs I need to know who will be sticking around and if I need to replace anyone. We want this transition to be as smooth as possible for everyone. If anyone has questions feel free to post them here.

Addendum 29/10/12: MAKARU is the final approval on RPGs until further notice.
Addendum 18/03/13: Judges added; Slight approval restructuring
This is where you will post your RPG request. See here for more information. The judges are:Lord of Adders BlackSisenArya Stark
NOTE: Four judges are required to approve an RPG.
Reasons to post in this topic:
-Posting a complete RPG-Posting to say you have fixed your RPG per Judge Suggestions (Please include a link, if your RPG is on another page.)
Reasons not to post in this topic:
-Posting an incomplete RPG-Asking a question-Posting to say you will edit-Posting to tell someone they shouldn't postMembers who are not RPG Judges, cannot post their thoughts in the Approval Topic. However, if a RPG is posted in this topic, and a member who is not a judge has something to say about the game, then they can take the RPG and their post into the Official RPG Planning Topic. If you, the member, wish to be noted with your opinions, then send the GM requesting a Personal Message detailing what you think is wrong about it -- however, posting it in the Official RPG Planning Topic is a better idea, as it allows the rest of the community to say their part.If you are not a Judge you shouldn't be posting in this topic at all, unless submitting a RPG for Approval. Do not post and tell someone that they aren't allowed to post here, it isn't your place to do so; the Judges will handle it.

THE OFFICIAL STAFF POSITIONS TOPIC
More specific questions regarding these groups are covered in the second half of this post.
For a list of all past and present staff and when they were promoted, please visit the Official Staff History Topic.
Forum Staff
Forum Assistants (FAs, Assistants)
The Forum Assistants help the board run more smoothly by assisting the Forum Leaders, Global Moderators, and Administrators with dealing with violations and other things. They can close topics and approve/hide topics and posts.
Forum Assistants command less authority than the Forum Leader; however, their word should be heeded. When looking to hire a new Forum Assistant, the administration looks for members who have displayed helpful behavior in and knowledge about the forums.
With the retirement of the Forum Mentor team, the FAs will take on the duties of that former staff group.Forum Leaders (FLs, Moderators, Mods)
Forum Leaders' duties include closing topics, moving topics, deleting topics and posts, giving Proto, approving and hiding topics and posts and various other things. They essentially keep things in order by creating and enforcing rules. They can also award and take away Protodermis points (Proto Energy, Proto, PE), if you merit it due to good or bad behavior. In extreme cases, a Forum Leader can also suspend posting privileges.
Forum Leaders are also tasked with being Primary Leaders in specific forums. They are responsible for that forum's rules and direction, such as by running events/contests, leading discussion, and so forth. The Primary Leader of each forum is the ultimate authority on what is being discussed in his or her forum, and as such should have a vested interest in the subjects being discussed.
Global Moderators (GMs, Globals)
Global Moderators are often among the more senior staff members, as their long tenure of service often gives them the experience level and trust of the administrators that is required to be placed in such a position. Not everyone that is a Forum Leader will reach the level of Global Moderator, even if they have been around for a long time. Global Moderators are often the primary link between the various levels of forum staff and administration, often tasked with the responsibility of "holding the fort down" should problems arise and an administrator is unavailable. Global Moderators are key members of the moderating team as part of their duties are to be active in every forum to assist the Forum Leaders in their moderating duties.
Black Six is in charge of the global moderating staff.Global Moderators are also key in the direct moderation of members. They have the ability to edit various profile fields such as signatures and personal photos/avatars, and can adjust Proto of members in any forum or directly through the member's profile. They also have the power to temporarily suspend any member's posting.
Forum Administrators
The Forum Administrator, Tufi Piyufi, is primarily involved in managing the forums, and maintaining the BZPower staff. Forum Admins don't carry quite as much authority as primary Administrators, and don't pay the bill to keep the site running. See the bottom of this post for more information.
BZPOWER ADMINISTRATORS
These guys run the site at its highest level, such as posting news, creating general BZPower rules, maintaining the site, and, perhaps most importantly, paying the bills. There are currently two active administrators: Black Six and Dimensioneer . Check the Reference Desk topic for more information on individual administrator's duties.
News Staff
Reporters (old color)
Reporters post news stories on the home page. Black Six (BZP's News Editor) chooses a Reporter when a new one is needed. Being a Reporter is a tremendous responsibility. You will be approached if the administrators think you are capable. Having a strong command of the English language and having strong communication skills are attributes you should display if you wish to become a Reporter.
Blog Staff
Blog Leader
The Blog Leader can be considered the head honcho of the blogs. The Blog Leader is in charge of the Blog Moderation Team (Blog Assistants). Part of the Blog Leader's responsibilities are to set and enforce Blog Policy and to remove any inappropriate content from blogs.
Blog Assistants
The Blog Assistants are responsible of the oversight and monitoring of blogs. They assist in removing inappropriate content from blogs. Blog Assistants report directly to the Blog Leader and Administrators (Black Six) in the event of serious issues, but in most cases are entrusted to manage blogs as needed.
Please see this blog entry for information on Blog Staff powers.
Reference Staff
Reference Keepers (disbanded 08/29/2012)
The BZPower Reference Team was in charge of expanding the BZP Reference section, and making sure the information was up-to-date. These members were selected for their knowledge of the BIONICLE sets and storyline, and were selected by the administrators, forum or otherwise, though the Reference Master also had a hand in the process.
Reference Masters (disbanded 08/29/2012)
Reference Masters were in charge of the Reference Team on BZPower and oversaw any projects and contests relating to the Bionicle storyline and sets.
Retired Staff
The Retired Staff (old color) group was introduced on April 11th, 2012 to recognize the contributions of former staff members. The group is set up on an invitational basis; only those staff who left their position in good standing are able to be placed into this group. In addition, if a current staff member becomes inactive for a certain period of time, it is likely that he or she will be placed into this group. Retired Staff have the same privileges as OBZPCs but do enjoy the perk of having their birthday topics in GD.
GENERAL STAFF INFORMATION
- If you are in a state of punishment, such as below half-proto, restriction, suspension, or banishment, you aren't eligible to become a member of the staff. Otherwise, anything goes. Above average posts, age, proto, or anything else do not affect your chances of being asked. What is important is the qualities you display when you post.
- Outstanding BZPower Citizens are not members of the BZPower staff. They are members who have achieved full proto, but are not required to help or enforce policy on the boards. They are no more or less subject to the rules than any BZPower member, nor have any more authority or say than normal members of the board. They are recognized for their contributions towards BZPower with the OBZPC title, but otherwise are on the same level as everyone else.
- The group masks for staff members are as follows:
- -- Retired Staff Komau
- -- Reporter Kakama
- -- Forum/Blog Assistant Noble Huna
- -- Forum Leader Akaku
- -- Administrator/Global Moderator/Blog Leader Hau
- Staff members are automatically boosted to full proto upon receiving a staff position, if they are not already there.
Questions and Answers:
FORUM STAFF
Do you have to apply to become a forum staff member?
No, you do not. In fact, applications for staff positions are not used anymore.
Is there any set number of FAs?
Nope, we choose new Assistants if we feel there is a position to be filled, but we have no set number for the whole group.
Is there any set number of FAs per forum?
Not really, but each forum tends to have two or three assistants. FAs are moved from forum to forum according to the immediate need, but for the most part stay in the same areas.
Do assistants have other moderating powers, besides topic closing?
Forum Assistants also have the ability to approve and hide topics and posts -- any other actions, like deleting topics permanently, editing posts, and awarding Proto boosts are performed by the Forum Leaders, Global Moderators, and Administration.
If you're a FA, but you only come on the computer once or twice a week, will you be removed from the team?
Due to the nature of the position, being an Assistant demands you be fairly active. If you are inactive for a very long period of time, you will most likely be removed eventually, especially if you haven't talked to an administrator about your absence.
However, you certainly won't be dropped off the team immediately just because you've been missing for a few days, and the Administrators understand the need to take breaks when needed, especially if they're informed of them in advance.
Can I still report posts and help people, even if I'm not an FA/FL?
Yes you can! And you should! If you do a lot and are really helpful, you might be able to become a Forum Assistant yourself. Have fun helping out! Seriously, you guys are encouraged to report posts. Just don't forget, no posting just to tell someone that they double-posted, or have broken some other rule, because that's not your job. Just report it and we'll get it taken care of. See the next question for more information.
Can only FAs/FLs post to tell the member what he or she did wrong?
Correcting members is strictly a staff thing. Simply quietly report the post or topic, and the forum staff will be there to deal with it when they can.
Note that this doesn't apply to, say, correcting a member on some fact of the storyline or other information that doesn't really regard BZPower's rules - feel free to politely describe the member's error by posting if you think it's needed. What we're trying to avoid is members who decide to "play moderator."
Do FAs/FLs/GMs get the same benefit as Premier Members (e.g., being able to post in G&T)?
Being promoted to FA/FL/FM/GM will not give you the same benefits as a Premier Member. Forum Administrators and Administrators are, however, considered Premier by default.
SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL LEADER AND ASSISTANTS
Does being an FA increase your chances of being chosen to be a Leader?
Naturally, if a new forum coordinator is needed for a forum, the Assistants of that forum will be taken into consideration for the position, as they're likely to have more experience with enforcing policy in that forum already.
However, though it is rare, regular members and OBZPCs have taken the leap straight from their group to Leader in the past.
Can you be a Leader/Assistant/OBZPC at the same time?
No, you cannot. The three groups aren't mixed, and neither are their group masks.
Are there requirements for being an FL/FA, like a minimum amount of time you have to spend on BZP per day, etc.?
Yes, you must have half Proto or above, and obviously you cannot be banned. Your posting must also be unsuspended. The administrators do not consider members in such status by default. It is also helpful to be an active member, though staff value is usually a combination of both the quality of the work and the activity, so it can balance out, and you don't always need to be super active.
If I'm not an FA/FL, am I not allowed to help in New Member Q&A?
No, members are encouraged to help. It's just that the Forum Assistants assigned to that forum have a DUTY to help.
Regular Members should answer questions, as long as they're correct and relevant to the question(s) asked, and you've read the forum's pinned guidelines. Please note that regular members are not allowed to confirm other members' answers.
Do you have to stick around and do well in Q&A to become a Forum Assistant?
How well you perform in Q&A may or may not have an impact on whether or not you are promoted. Sometimes being a proficient helper in Q&A demonstrates an understanding of how BZPower and its rules work. So no, it is not strictly a necessity; that's only a single factor, and staff are promoted for different reasons.
How do you become a News Writer?
Just as there is no specific way to become a member of the forum staff, there is no guaranteed way to become a Reporter. In general, long-time members who show a strong command of the English language are considered. This is, of course, by itself not enough to be chosen. You must prove yourself to be trustworthy and to have been trustworthy throughout your BZP career. This is because Reporters post their work to the front page of BZPower. Consider it the equivalent of becoming an editor of a well known newspaper.Oh, reporting news always helps, too!
GRAB YOUR WALKING STAFF
Do you have no chance for becoming Staff if you are just under half Proto?
No - that counts as being in a state of punishment. You must be at half Proto or above.
Do you have to have been a member for a minimum amount of time (such as a year) before becoming Staff?
No, some become Staff before they reach a year, though it is rare. It is when the Admins feel a person is ready and there are openings that a person is considered.
If you are constantly reporting valid things, does that give you a better shot of becoming Staff?
Yes it does; being helpful is always a good way to show you have what it takes, especially since Administrators receive every report made on BZPower. It is a great way to get your name noticed - and yes, your name is included automatically in your report.
Reporting a lot of legitimate stuff will most likely put you higher up but isn't the only way to be chosen for the staff.
Remember: we don't look kindly upon members who post just to say they are reporting. That has a negative, rather than positive, effect.
THE MORE YOU KNOW...
What happens if you misuse your authority?
That would depend on how severe the misuse was. Most likely, you would lose your staff position. But it depends on the situation. Not many staff members have been removed due to inappropriate use of power - generally, those who leave just lose interest or don't have the spare time they once did to perform their duties.
Are there any good tips to becoming Staff?
Try to have and display a good knowledge of the rules. A good way to brush up is to check the closing posts of topics because you'll either find answers to some uncommon questions or maybe even learn a few rules that you may not have known. Report things often. If you are interested in becoming an Assistant in a specific forum, concentrate your work in that forum. Learn the forum's rules and be an active participant in the topics in that forum.
And, this may be hard to swallow, but it is important. Be prepared to accept the fact that you may not be chosen. It is quite difficult to get a staff position, and the competition is not only numerous, but often fierce. If it is clear that your only intentions are to become a member of the staff, this will hurt your chances fairly decently. I know this from my own experience. But if your aim is true, and you are not chosen when promotion season comes around, do not be disheartened. Often, in striving towards the goal of becoming a staff member, you will find that you will become a very highly respected and well known member of BZPower. That in itself is quite the reward. And, there is always next time.
(To avoid confusion, -Windrider- wrote this section. "My own experience" refers to her personal experience and not Than's.)
Feel free to post any questions about the staff here. If you feel there is anyway to improve upon this topic, please contact -Windrider-.
Recent Updates:
02/06/2016: Decommissioned as "official"; feel free to start individual topics for questions.
01/09/2014: Fixed formatting issues. Minor changes.

COMPLETELY OFF-TOPIC RULES and GUIDELINES
Make Topics That Have A Point
The forum is called Completely Off Topic, not Completely No Topic. Meaningless, random jibberish will be locked. Likewise, this forum is not your personal blog or chat room.
Do NOT Spam
SPAM stands for Stupid Pointless Annoying Message.Spouting random jibberish at every opportunity is not good, especially not if it is done in a thread that has a clear point. If you want to chat, do it elsewhere or on IM/PM, but don't do it here. Excessive roleplaying is also prohibited, and please stay on topic. Derailing a thread risks getting it closed.
Do NOT Flame
Tearing into other members or their ideas is not productive for anyone. If they have broken a rule, use the Report button. If they need to be pointed to the Rules & FAQ, point them to it and leave it at that. If you disagree, present your opinion in a courteous manner. If you don't like something that's being discussed, say why or perhaps keep to yourself. Flaming isn't tolerated here.Trolling, or flame baiting, is similar to flaming. It is antagonizing someone in hopes of getting a negative response to make the other person look bad. While trolling is not exactly the same as flaming, it is just as bad, if not worse.
NO INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT
NO links, pics or even REFERENCES to porn or hentai, or any adult content whatsoever. This will result in instant banning. BZP has no age requirements which means there are people of all ages here, including very young children. We're a site with the primary intent of discussing a kids toy line-- keep things safe for everyone. If you want to talk about adult subjects then find yourself another messageboard that allows it.If you don't know what the above rule is talking about and referencing, then don't worry - you won't break it accidentally. If you do, be warned... this is an automatic suspension and then banning.
NO ADVERTISING
Read this topic for information on the advertising rule. This advertising rule includes creating topics to simply advertise a site that you know of/own; that's what your signature is there for.
NO Clubs/Groups/Leagues, etc.
No topics for "clubs," "groups," or the like, where you have to join, and people are excluded. It hasn't worked out in the past, due to spam and other conflicts, so they're out and will be closed if posted.
NO Politics & Religion
Politics and religious discussions are forbidden. Not because there is anything wrong with discussing these things, but because 99% of the time those topics turn into flame wars. NO exceptions! If you want to discuss these things then there are plenty of messageboards out there that focus on serious topics like politics or religion where you can go to discuss these things. Please keep debates like this off BZP-- there's little reason to bring it up to the audience here anyway. There will be NO exceptions here. Yes, even new presidential discussions are forbidden, unless there is a News Article and/or Official Topic about it. Thanks for being understanding about this rule.
Use the Report Button
There is a "REPORT" button in the lower left-hand corner of each post for a reason. Posting "Will a Moderator please lock this thread!?" does nothing to bring the thread to our attention. If you feel that that post is breaking the rules, hit the report button, enter an understandable reason, and leave it at that. Don't be afraid to report something even if you are not quite sure whether it breaks the rules or not; a Forum Leader/Assistant will take a look and make a decision.
OFF TOPIC means OFF TOPIC
COT is for the discussion of things not covered in the rest of the forums. Off topic games and discussions are for here. Bionicle- and LEGO-related topics go in their respective forums and BZPower-related topics in General Discussion, Q&A, or here.
Topic REVIVAL
In the Completely Off Topic forum, if a topic has not been posted in for 60 days, you may not revive it by posting again, or it will be closed. When a topic is inactive for that long, people didn't want to continue discussing it, so let it stay dead. If there's new information/interest/etc. in the topic, feel free to just create a new topic for it instead.
Birthday Topics
Creating birthday topics for people on the day of their birthday is fine. However, topics celebrating the birthday of BZP staff members are for the General Discussion forum.
Unofficial Topics
When posting topics, please do not note that a topic is unofficial in the title (eg. "Unofficial Polo X Topic!"). Using the "unofficial" title is not necessary to differentiate your topics from those with official status. Don't worry about being closed because you didn't specify in the title; as long as you don't specifically call it official, there won't be any confusion. If you include an unnecessary 'Unofficial' in your topic's title, it will be edited out by a Forum Leader.
Topic Approval
The following topics cannot be posted unless you PM a Forum Leader first, and they give you the heads up:
We hope you enjoy Completely Off Topic and follow the rules here, so that the forum can continue to be the enjoyable place that it is. COT can be a hectic forum, so we appreciate you doing your part to help.
Please PM a COT Forum Leader if something needs to be added, corrected, or suggested.
Our regards,
COT Forum Staff

The Official Proto Energy Topic
Proto Energy is BZPower's variation on the warn system that is standard on most forums. It is a merit/demerit system: a way to recognize the hard work of members and to punish those that do not follow the rules. For more information, view the Reference Desk topic on Proto Energy.
Other than purchasing Premier Membership, there is no guaranteed way to earn Proto. However, there are a few things for which people can be rewarded with a boost:
- First, you can get PE boosts if you show a truly helpful attitude.
- Second, you can get PE boosts by sending in news reports.
- Third, you can get PE boosts by helping the staff by reporting around the site.
Below, we'll be covering all the basics. Additionally, if you have a question about the system, feel free to post it in here.

ANSWERS
NEW! THE NEW WARNING SYSTEM
Why are my warning points no longer displayed?
A recent board upgrade removed the ability for members to have negative warning points. As such, the staff had to recalibrate the numbers corresponding to the various Proto levels in order to keep the Proto system in place. So as not to confuse members with the changes, the "warning points" link is no longer displayed in profiles and elsewhere. This means, unfortunately, that members cannot access their own warn logs and history. It is recommended, therefore, that you copy the reason for any Proto changes you receive on the acknowledgement page (see below) and make note of the staff member who gave the warning so that you can contact him or her with questions.
See this topic for more information.I was below half Proto, and now I'm at neutral again. Why?
The board upgrade mentioned above made it impossible for members to have negative warning points, which corresponded to Proto levels below half. As a result, all members below neutral Proto got reset to 0 warning points, or the neutral PE level. The Administration has decided not to go and change the PE levels of those affected; "consider it a clean slate," as Black Six said here.
Why can't I post after my Proto level is changed? After your Proto level is changed, you must acknowledge the change. This is a feature designed to ensure that members know why they receive warnings; because your warning level is changed as a reward on BZPower, you have to acknowledge Proto boosts as well as Proto drains. You can access the acknowledgement page by clicking the reply button at the top of a topic or the button in blogs' comment boxes or through a link provided in the quick reply area.
PROTO ENERGY BASICS
How many Proto points are there, and where does it start? How can you see how much you have?
There are eleven positions (-5 to +5), and everyone starts at 0, which is in the middle. To see how much you have, go to your profile. Beneath your profile picture is the number of proto (warning) points you have. This information is also above your proto bar in topics, and beneath your username in blog comments.
Also, you use these as a reference: [ -5 | -4 | -3 | -2 | -1 | 0/Neutral PE | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 ]
What is at each end of the bar?
When it's empty, you're at risk of suspension; when it's full, you become an Outstanding BZP Citizen (OBZPC) and recieve the benefits of that group, which are a spiffy orange name, having to wait only 30 days in between name changes, and of course the pride that comes with it, and the respect of BZPower's members.
Who gives the boosts?
Administrators, Global Moderators, and Forum Leaders can boost or reduce your PE.
Can Forum Leaders give themselves Proto?
Forum Leaders are awarded with full Proto when they are promoted if they are not already full. Forum Leaders can be subject to Proto drops; however, if the Admins have a problem with their performance, they will most likely sort out the problem with the staff member without reducing his or her PE.
How do you know if your Proto has changed?
You will usually get a PM from the person who modified it, or the reason will be edited into the offending post or topic (if it was a topic-related reason). You may also choose to receive an automatic notification of Proto modifications in your notification settings. In addition, you will be unable to create new content in the forums or in the blogs until you acknowledge the change; attempting to do so will bring you to the acknowledgement page.
YOUR LOSS IS NO ONE'S GAIN
What are the ways to get your Proto lowered?
PE may be decreased for things such as (but not limited to):
- Flaming of any kind
- Excessive spamming
- Violations of BZPower's Forum Rules & Guidelines
- Disrespecting the staff or any other member.
Can you lose PE because you accidentally revived a topic?
Short answer: Not really. Long answer: It's up to the Forum Leader of the forum, but it's highly unlikely. As long as you aren't constantly reviving topics, you aren't likely to be punished.
Do you lose PE for criticizing others' work?
It depends. If your criticism is harsh and hurtful to the creators of art/fiction/MOC, you could very well lose PE, for it might count as flaming. On the other hand, constructive reviews that can provide useful tips and point out some aspects that need work, while also stressing the good points, are always welcome and encouraged. Consistently posting substantial and well thought-out reviews might even earn you a Proto point!
Does PE, in any way, affect whether someone gets banned or suspended?
Administrators will review losses in Proto Energy and decide if further administrative action is needed.
Also, contrary to popular belief, Forum Leaders may suspend members without removing all of their Proto Energy, if the circumstances require it. You are also suspended if you are dropped past the -5 PE limit.
If you become unsuspended and lose PE again, do you become suspended again?
If it is clear that a suspension has not changed a member's behavior, further administrative action may be taken.
NEWS
Don't we get a Proto boost for sending in news?
Not necessarily; it depends. If it does not make the front page, you do not get a boost. If it is an exclusive tip, as in something out of the ordinary, and you are listed individually as a source, you just might.
Can you go from -5 to +5 just by sending in news?
Yes, it is possible.
PREMIER MEMBERSHIP
Do you get a boost for Premier Membership?
Yes, as stated in the Reference Desk Premier Membership Topic. You actually get two points of Proto!
When you are no longer Premier, does the Proto disappear?
No, Proto only goes down as punishment. You're not being punished if your Premier Membership runs out and you don't renew, so your Proto won't be affected when the time runs out.
Does my PE go up if I renew my Premier Membership?
Yes.
However, if you are not at full Proto after a Lifetime Premier Membership purchase, you cannot receive any more from sending in an additional donation.
Isn't becoming Premier the same as buying PE?
Technically, yes. There is no arguing that. But, "buying Proto" isn't a cheap way of earning Proto, not with Premier prices these days. Think about it, though; you are giving your own money to BZP as a donation, which is quite the boon to the Admins. Donating money can be just as thoughtful as reporting topics.
HELPING OUT AROUND THE "HOUSE"
Is helping someone the only way to earn PE?
No, but it is a very recommended way to get PE.
Do you gain any Proto for reporting posts, topics, sigs, anything?
Yes! Sending in lots of valid reports is an excellent way to get noticed by the forum staff.
UPDATED Are rewards for advertising Proto and post boosts?
With the changes to the advertising policy, there are no longer any special awards for reporting violations.
THINGS YOU MAY WANT TO KNOW BUT ARE AFRAID TO ASK
Can you refer someone for a Proto Boost?
If you feel someone has helped out enough to be acknowledged, you can make a Forum Leader aware of it. But that doesn't mean that the member is guaranteed to receive a PE boost. Those decisions are made by the appropriate Forum staff and Admins themselves, at their discretion.
And, contrary to some rumor, these recommendations are often taken seriously. I know cases where members have been rewarded after being pointed out for a boost. Please do not abuse the system, though - we'll know if the member deserves one or not.
Could somebody make a chart on how much PE you get for certain stuff?
No, because there is no guaranteed way to gain Proto, besides purchasing Premier Membership. The Admins, Global Moderators, and Forum Leaders make these decisions on a case-by-case basis, so a chart wouldn't be possible.
(WINDY EDIT: Buy me coffee and I'll give you PE. (Not really, but please go ahead anyway.))
How are there normal members with full PE?
Their accounts need to be modified manually by the administrators; if you have full PE, or you see another member with full Proto, but they've not been upgraded to OBZPC yet, you should PM a Forum Assistant with a link to your/their profile. The account should be upgraded within a few days.
Do you need full PE to become a staff member?
Nope. It's just that once you become a staff member, your PE is automatically upped to full. And just in case you don't know how to increase your chances of becoming a staff member, please see this topic in the Reference Desk or the Official Staff Positions Topic.
--
If you have a question about the PE system, please feel free to post it in this topic, but please make sure that it has not been answered in the post above. Any question not related to Proto Energy should be searched for in the Compendium. If you cannot find your answer in there, feel free to start a new topic in this forum!

Now, onto the answers...
IMAGES AROUND MY NAME
What is an avatar, and how do I change mine?
An avatar is the image right below a member's name. On the new forums, your personal photo is synonymous with your avatar. As such, to change your avatar, you will now need to change your personal photo. To change your avatar click here. This will take you to your control panel. Next, click on "Change your photo..." which is the first option you should see under "General Account Settings." From here, you can upload a photo from your computer, or import a photo from an external URL. Allowed file types are GIFs, JPEGs, and PNGs. Before the November 2nd software update, uploaded avatars smaller than 200x200 pixels would sometimes not display. This should be fixed, however; if you are still experiencing issues, try re-uploading your avatar.
Please note that GIFs will not animate anywhere but on the profile pages.Once you have uploaded a photo, you will be asked to crop it. The selection you crop will appear as your avatar on the forums; the uncropped image will appear as your personal photo on your profile page.
As a secondary option, you may sync your avatar using Gravatar. Gravatar is an abbreviation for "globally recognized avatar." While the Gravatar service is mostly intended for bloggers and not forum-goers, the IPB software allows you to make use of the service here on BZPower. Once you register your email with Gravatar and upload your photo, you may use that email here to sync your "gravatar" with your BZP avatar.
How do I get the masks to the right of my proto bar?
You will see that certain members have mask images (some shifting) to the right of their proto bar. Here is what each one represents:
- -- Outstanding BZPower Citizen Copper Mask of Victory
- -- Retired Staff Komau
- -- Reporter Kakama
- -- Forum/Blog Assistant Noble Huna
- -- Forum Leader Akaku
- -- Administrator/Global Moderator/Blog Leader Hau
Please do not use these in your avatar and signature or elsewhere without having earned them.
How do I get the pictures under my rank?
You can get the rank image by being a Premier Member. More info on Premier Membership can be found here.
What is the PE bar under my name?
This is a visual representation of your standing in BZPower's merit/demerit system. You can learn more about Proto Energy in this topic over here.
How do I get that spinning mask to the left of my Proto bar?
Members get the spinning masks underneath their name, to the left of their Proto bar, to indicate how long they have been a part of BZPower.
- 1 year: Vahi
- 2 years: Avohkii
- 3 years: Great Huna
- 4 years: Rahaga Norik head
- 5 years: Olmak
- 6 years: Faxon
- 7 years: Ignika
- 8 years: Ackar head
- 9 years: Hau
- 10 years: Hapori Tohu's disembodied yet gloriously spinning head
- 11 years: Rocka's helmet
- 12 years: Furno, or something like that
- 13 years: Breez!
- 14 years: Gali's mask, Gen 2 style
SIGNATURES AND PERSONAL PHOTOS
How do I get a sig?
To add or edit your sig click here. When editing your signature, please do keep in mind the signature guidelines. There is an 800x300 pixel reference box on that page to allow you to check the legality of your sig's dimensions.
How do I get an Flash animation in my sig?
For flash images, use the following tags:
[media='width,height']URL HERE[/media]
Put the width and height where indicated; however, I believe if left blank, the image's default dimensions will be used.
Am I allowed to use images from the news articles and such for avatars, sigs, etc.?
Yes, but it would be appreciated if you saved the images and hosted them through an image-hosting site or your own site as opposed to taking them directly from BZPower. It is true that we no longer enforce the direct-linking policy; however, it is considered courteous not to link directly from this site.
What are the size limits of sigs and avatars?
The file size of your avatar and signature may not pass 250 kB COMBINED. Your entire signature is limited to a space of 800x300 pixels. You can use any combination of up to ten images and text to fill this area. Should you use an 800x300 image, however, you will have no room for additional text. Larger images have larger file sizes, so please do always check the file size.
What info is there about the Personal Photo?
Your personal photo appears on your profile page and is now synonymous with your avatar. To change it, go here and select "Change your photo..." Keep in mind the following rules:
- All photos must be no larger than 250 kB in file size.
- Allowed file types: .gif, .jpg, and .png.
POSTING MY PICTURES
Are there any guidelines for posted images' dimensions and file sizes on BZP?
Yes, all posted images must be within 750 kilobytes. As for dimensions, the board software will automatically scale down large images, but keep in mind that this will not reduce the file size.
How do I post pictures?
You post pictures by pressing the IMG button in the rich text editor (). Then, paste in the image's URL.
How do I make a picture also be a link?
Using the rich text editor:
1. Click the "Image" button on the top bar and use this to insert your picture.
2. Highlight/select the picture using your mouse.
3. Click the "Link" button on the top bar (bottom row) and type in or paste the URL that you want the picture to direct to.
Using BBCode:
Use this code:
[url=URL here][img=URL of Image Here][/URL]
How do I get a picture from my computer to the web?
To get a picture here, you must do one of two things:
- Upload directly by being Premier; for more info on this, GO HERE.
- Upload it to a hosting site, then copy and paste the URL.
How do you get pics from the web to my computer?
Right click on the image, and select the save option from the drop-down menu. If you wish to use the image on BZPower, upload it to Brickshelf (if it's LEGO-related), Majhost (if it's not), or any other image-hosting site first. Then, use the image's URL and the steps above to post it here.
How long do uploaded images remain on BZP?
Avatars that are uploaded will stay until you remove them.
How do I put emoticons in my post, and what is the limit?
To get emoticons into your post, click the " :)" icon on the top bar. This will bring up a list at the bottom of the post field. Use the small blue arrows to navigate, or click "Show All" to bring up a menu. The current limit is fifteen, but let's not go overboard and abuse the system; please try to use only a moderate amount.
EXTRA BUT USEFUL INFO
How do I get a still image from an animated picture?
When the animation reaches the frame you want, press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard, which will save the image. Then paste the image in an image-editing program.
How do you locate the properties (filesize, image size) of a flash image?
There are two ways you can do this:
- You could right click on the page (not on an image) and select View Source to see the HTML.
- The file is also stored in your browser cache if you want to look at it, but it could be scaled on the page, so the sizes could be different.
Also, let it be known that you may use flash files if they do not "disrupt the page," be it by automatically playing music, closing the window, or causing pop-ups. This is prohibited -- if you don't know whether or not it's okay, ask a Q&A staff member.
Is there anything else I need to know?
When quoting someone with a picture in the post, it is preferred that you do not keep the picture in the reply. Go down to the Quote box and delete it, or better, link it. It is especially preferred that you refrain from quoting very large images.
Feel free to use this topic for any image-related questions you may have; however, we do please ask that you search through the post above for your answer before you post.
Recent Updates:
07/24/2014: Updated sig+av combined file size limit (250 kB) and other limits (750 kB).
