Pan Flambeau

Thursday night, I earned all possible points in effort and in degree of difficulty. That was barely enough to avert disaster, though, and there is a lesson to be learned.   For Valentine's Day, I thought I'd get fancy, and pulled a recipe from foodnetwork.com for Pistachio-crusted tilapia & chard with prosciutto and gorgonzola. Because Amanda doesn't like pistachios, and I have no idea where to find chard, I made some substitutions in the recipe.   It starts simply enough: chop up some or

Requiem For The Poor & Irish

Finally.   Those of you (yes, all 6 of you) who have read through the archives know that I've played Team Fortress 2 for a while. In fact, I posted a quick screenshot some three years ago. Three years ago...wow. I'm happy to report that my 119th medal is golden, and I am known to still haunt a certain server set [who has their own forae and as such I won't link them here]. Though, if you go hunting for me on Steam, you'll find me with an avatar that looks awfully similar to the one I sport her

Kiss Me

Kiss me out of the bearded barley Nightly, beside the green, green grass Swing, swing, swing the spinning step You wear those shoes and I will wear that dress. Oh, kiss me beneath the milky twilight Lead me out on the moonlit floor Lift your open hand Strike up the band and make the fireflies dance Silver moon's sparkling So kiss me Kiss me down by the broken tree house Swing me upon its hanging tire Bring, bring, bring your flowered hat We'll take the trail marked on your fathe

Observation And Deduction

I could say something about the new traffic I've gotten in the Voting Booth, but I've got softball on the brain, can't shake it.   FBC-Kenner won tonight in the first elimination game. We play tomorrow morning, in less than 11 hours, actually, and whoever wins that game gets to turn around and play again, in another knockout game. See the "Playoffs?" entry for more details.   Anyway, about Observation and Deduction. I'm borrowing a line from The Eleventh Hour, a book by Graeme Base. Wonderfu

For Home Country!

The title is from a sound bite in Red Alert 2.   I figure, since everyone is doing it, I ought to have a Q&A entry in my blog. That is, in case anyone wants to know more about me.     If no one asks any questions, I'll know I've scared everyone off. Either that, or I have overexposed myself here.   With that said, ask away! Every question will get a response, and most will have answers.   -KIE

Portrait Of An Apology

^The song I've got playing in the former KexPod. "Could you stay for a while?"   Funny email time! My computer case arrives Thursday. I'll find time to take pics with a camera here at the office, and post an entry.     -KIE

The Keystone

Craig Biggio saved the Houston Astros.   Yes, folks, there is a Major League Baseball team in Houston. And yes, there is a member of the 3,000 hit club that didn't play (except wearing road greys/reds) in New York or Boston or Atlanta. Or even Los Angeles, for that matter.   Bidge's career accomplishment last night legitimized the Astros franchise: there will be an Astro in Cooperstown by 2015 (two, if you count Bags [Jeff Bagwell]). And if he's not first-ballot, well, that's East Coast Bias f

Free Agency

4½ years.   Not really by the boards, but I had very serious plans of getting into a groove there. Even thought I was in that groove, but now I'm out.   Pray for me. Pray for us. We need to land quickly.     -KIE

Welcome To K-ville

Afford me a moment to rant.   Not about politics per se, but about local goings on.       Earlier this year, it was announced that Fox would film a new TV series called K-Ville, on location in New Orleans. The series would be a crime dramatization of post-Katrina New Orleans. The pilot episode aired this past Monday night at 9 ET/PT on Fox broadcast stations, and is currently available for free on iTunes. It is rated TV-14.     And I made the mistake of watching it.   Now, I'm not saying one

Disappointment

[adult swim] is dead to me.   I may flip it on for the occasional Family Guy or Home Movies, and perhaps Robot Chicken. The rest of the tripe interests me none. Thus, with the demise of anime on Saturday nights (even half-Saturday nights), I have no reason to turn on Cartoon Network beyond 11 PM Central time.     Where, oh where did Bleach go?     -KIE

It's Raining In Kenner

It's raining outside my office window right now.   What is the significance, you ask? Well, the Gulf Coast has been in a drought for quite a while. Last summer was very dry, up until Katrina. And after Katrina blew through, there was not a cloud in the sky until a rain band (one of those extending swirly arms of a hurricane) of Rita came through, a month later. Then after that, it was mid November before any real rain.   Mind you, dry weather is better than wet weather for cleaning up outsid

Making A .name For One's Self

Not really local, but not life in general either.   This morning, from wired.com:   And I had wondered why all the reply email addresses from those "nice girl who want to chat" ended in .name or .info.  Bad guys win another round. Tracking.....     -KIE

Return To Chocolate City

Blog of the Week XXVII celebrations continue below, and will resume tomorrow, but now we interrupt to bring you this headline, ripped from this morning's Times-Picayune.... :wakeup2:   I have to admit: it's never a dull moment when Nagin opens his mouth. Again, while this might do more harm than good, what's Louisiana politics without a good conspiracy theory or five?   -KIE, whose bracket would still be intact were it not for Louisville choking on Aggie crunch.

I Died

Been busy for the past week. Anyone noting the entry ID number on this post will notice that this is from last year. This is true: I started writing an entry about what I got for Christmas. I started in draft, and got really busy. For any of you wondering, a partial list is below:   WHAT I GAVE: Amanda: a Victoria's Secret gift card (Juvenile comments from the peanut gallery will be deleted.) a bottle of perfume: Ralph Lauren Blue a $20 IOU because underarmour.com can't keep their inventory st

Tunnel

200½ lb., 25.0% body fat     Is this what it's like? Every time I turn around, there's something to remind me of Amanda, and every time Amanda comes to mind, I start with the stupid smile again.   Not that I'm not enjoying it or anything.   Finally, a new recipe. This would have already been posted, except that I was acquainting myself with the epicenter map in Team Fortress Classic. I'll have to run it on a private server to get a feel for it, but in the interim, never underestimate the v

The River Run

Oh, believe you me, I have entries worth posting. I just don't have time to type them up.   I do, however, have time to relate this to you:   The best fried chicken on the face of the planet is served by a man named Arthur Davis in an old country store in Lorman, MS. Point your GPS to 31° 49' N, 91° 3' W to find it on a service road on US 61.     You will not regret this trip. People from Vancouver, BC, have signed the guest book, saying as much.     More to come later this week, assuming I

Return To Modern Civilization

Or, a case study in meeting deadlines. Bah, who am I kidding. It's not a case study; it's just a rant.   The elevator in the office was fixed today. Well, the repairs were completed, in any case. The hydraulic pumps had given out, which meant, well, I've never worked for Otto, so I don't know what work that entailed. All I know is that the original scheduled completion date was February 5. Then February 19.   Then we started joking that it was sometime in June.   But, my office building now

Squeaking By....

I think I'm going to make it...     By whatever stroke of luck that Helios continues not to cooperate, the amount of work that I have to get done for Friday's report has been pared down to a manageable level. I may escape from this [relatively] unscathed yet! I just can't forget about the mapping that still needs to be done tomorrow.       I promised a computer component sometime this month, and tonight I deliver. This is probably the only item that is a replacement more than an upgrade: my

Love And Radiation

You're electric And I'm out in the rainstorm You're the virus That's running through my veins You're a danger Like love and radiation Seeping into my brain You're the one I've been waiting for You're my rocket to the sky You're the diving board Standing seven stories high You're the thrill of love Like a jet on fire Push me out and see if I can fly. You're the ocean About to pull me under You're the surgeon Who says "It's got to bleed." You're the true love I've always bee

Impressions

I like to make good ones.   One thing off the bucket list.   -KIE   EDIT: the above image is an pressing of my engineer's seal. When coupled with my [noticeably absent] signature, the above impression states that I have reviewed the document attached to the seal, and on my authority and expertise as a professional engineer, the contents of the document are correct, safe for use or construction, or whatever extent dictated by my area of expertise (Civil Engineering), within the state of Lou

*giant dust cloud*   Hello.   Sorry you haven't gotten to hear about me for the past......while. I've been busy. Wedding plans & stuff.   Well, that's not wholly true: I moved at the beginning of May, and I've spent a good chunk of time unpacking. Couple that with no internet access at work (firewall in the Yenni building), and Team Fortress 2, and it's been little but cricket chirping in my blog.   One of the neat things about getting married is the registry. It's traditional to commemo

Dry Run #2

And to think, this time last year I'd just ranted about the Astros offensive ineptitude, but did find a nice restaurant. Todd & Melanie, myself, and my parents will probably eat there in a few weeks: even if they're $1, they're still hot dogs.   So here, I am, blogging for a year. I've toed lines, pushed limits, gotten into hot water, and hopefully generally elevated the topics of discussion in BZBlogs.     See, all this time, and going forward, it's not been so much about garnering comm

First Wave

More crazy email!   Mind you, I don't live in Florida, but I have evacuated and not evacuated in front of hurricanes before: I can identify with just about everything, except house insurance. I don't own a house; I rent. I don't know about you, but I nearly passed out from laughing so hard when I first read it.   Personal news: I GOT A KEY TO MY APARTMENT! WOOHOO! Maintenance ended up having to change the deadbolt because the keys in the envelope didn't match the installed deadbolt, but
