The Frazzled Puffball And The Recycled Plant

The Thursday before Easter, Leigh Ann and I found a few of those odd little fuzzy chicken-things around the school and were quite fascinated by them (I think a yellow, pink, and blue one turned up). Then this week, I discovered another one, somewhere between yellow and green, sitting all by itself on a shelf in the Latin room, all battered and frizzy...     Isn't it like a blend of terrifyingly freaky and one of the most adorable things ever? Both its wings are on one side, I think it's suppo

The Glatorian Of Fire

My Ackar arrived yesterday afternoon, I built him this morning, and I have to say he is the prettiest set I have set eyes upon in a long time.   Seriously. Not only is he BRIGHT RED and ORANGE, but his color layering is, for once in a Bionicle set, truly perfect. I mean, seriously. I love how bright and fiery he is. If I hadn't been quite so tired when I was building him (right after I woke up), I would probably have squeed when his pieces rolled out of the canister. And even so, I was still gr

Of Thulox And Va

I bought Thulox yesterday... I like him a lot more than I was expecting to.   He's actually sort of cute. I wish his body were both more substantial and more fixed in construction, but the Kalmah armor keeps his back double-socket from moving around, and the fact that his front socket can move means he can realistically put one leg in front of the other when walking. I would prefer his tail socket fixed in place, though. And because of the vertical alignment of his body sockets, his legs can't

Quiet

I love winter... I just went outside and found everything was still and silent, just a few birds chirping in the distance and a crack or two of sticks. There was the first real snowfall last night, and it's stuck through the day, nice for the first of December.   I love the look of bare trees, dark grey against the white of the snow, then with evergreen here and there... Fallen snow seems to make everything quiet. It's so calm and peaceful and relaxing. But I love all the seasons, really – spri

Oh Dear

I just learned about the metathesis of a disyllabic preposition in my Greek class today.   I feel somewhere between "... HOLD ME" and "this is the coolest stuff I have ever learned."   Discuss. ~ ToM

The Silent Hat Club

Because I have nothing else to blog about at the moment, I must declare that "unruly pasta drawing," "gratuitous cookie banner," and "distressed papaya" are absolutely some of the funniest phrases I've ever heard in my life. Those and some from the following incidents:   Leigh Ann: "Did I just hear the word 'shoulder nugget'?" Lowell: "Yes. Yes you did."   Lowell: "Did you just say 'cold war unicorns'?" Leigh Ann: "I did."   Me: "Did I hear you say 'silent hat club'?" Leigh Ann: "...No. No

How To Rebuild A Toa Nuva

Continuing Project Nuva, just how a Toa Nuva would be rebuilt (see below entry) would be to use these pieces... you can faintly see the lines of the graph paper I drew them on, so if you need a scale reference, it's there.     :: New pieces :: Modified single socket, similar to the rubber-lined ones of $20 set fame, except with the middle area shortened by half a stud. This allows for the gears to fit beneath it while still giving neck movement, keeping the head at the same level as the origi

Carapar Versus Hewkii

Now that I've built both of them, I can officially say that the two are a good contrast of a good and a bad set – both the yellow set of their groups, by an interesting coincidence... The same could be said of Mantax and Nuparu, actually, and perhaps Ehlek and Kongu, though which of the latter pair is the good one is bound to vary from person to person.     :: Carapar ::   His color scheme is not perfect, but it's still far better organized than Hewkii's. The biggest problem with it is that

Aestas Advenit

Does anyone else find it interesting that the Summer Solstice seems to be a ubiquitous celebration (to judge by the numerous blog entries around here about it), while the Winter Solstice and Vernal and Autumnal Equinoces are virtually ignored?   Seeing as I've made entries for the former two of the above three, I absolutely had to make one for the Summer Solstice. I have nothing to say about it, however, except that it would be most interesting to have a full moon the night afterward...   Now

Project Nuva :: Wings

It isn't dead. Really, it isn't. I haven't done anything on the Nuva-tweaking side, since that requires a lot of editing colors that I'm not really confident I can do, but! I've decided to add a new side to Project Nuva. One that takes the basic adaptive armor designs of the 2008 Nuva and makes them look so much more like the Nuva.   Unfortunately, I can't do this one via photos. Maybe Onua, if the ideas I have for him are compatible with his 2008 form, but none of the others, because they requ

Green

Things are slowly actually turning green around here... *bounce* The grass is no longer so yellowish, there are shoots coming up from all the flower beds, the ivy's turned a rich shade of green, and above all there are buds on all the bushes and trees. And it's supposed to rain tomorrow, which will be great in and of itself and will make everything look even better. It's about time, and I still can't wait for the rest to become green with leaves and new plants and everything else...   In other

Et Tu, Brutaka?

I couldn't resist.   The purpose of this entry is to rave about Brutaka. I finally unpacked my assortment of Lego from Christmas yesterday (I haven't had any time this past week), took him out of his box, and he just radiates power.   It's the combination of being really tall (he ties with Roodaka as tallest, excluding Kardas since that's a combiner), bulky, covered in spiky golden armor, and weilding a huge sword. He has a really solid construction, both in build and posability, as the 2006-n

The Muse And I

Remember Erato, the plant I bought a couple weeks ago? I spent quite a lot of today outside, either gardening or just sitting around, and I finally repotted her. (It? Plants are hermaphrodites, but this one is named after a female...) Now she has a nice dark green pot instead of the ugly orangey-brown one she came in.     She's an Aglaonema of the Emerald Beauty variety... The yellowish-white flowers are old; only the pale green one, on the left in the first picture above, actually looks nice

About Those Rank Images

It is so weird seeing images I made all over the forum. Pretty nice, though. I'm very fond of how most of them turned out. And oh, I had fun making them (roughly two-thirds, more if you count things I finalized), even if it took a while sometimes.   Just you wait, the best are yet to come. I like the Inika, Barraki, Mahri, and a lot of the Karda Nui stuff best. Keep watching Kex, Screenguy, and munkey! Though there are some fun things on the way that I'm looking forward to hitting as well. As s

A Need

I find myself in need of album cover art for Gravity Hurts. Now that I have an iPod I want to put it in there, but I also don't want my cover flow to become un-pretty because of it.   I was able to whip something together pretty easily for Creeping in my Soul and Closer to the Truth using one of Cryoshell's wallpapers, but as far as I know no such thing exists for Gravity Hurts...   I'm thinking green. Maybe something involving Lewa, but not necessarily. Because I need more green on my iPod.

Spring Break

Hmph. I hate it when these unexpectedly long delays happen between blog entries. (and I'm also not a fan of how they seem to be becoming a trend.)   So, life update!   My semester has been busy so far. That's what comes of taking five full courses, I guess, but wow there's a big difference between that and the normal 4/4.5 I had last semester. Which is part of the reason for the lack of updates. I just haven't had -time- to work on much of anything not school-related.   But that should change

It Could Almost Be Spring

Really, it's almost 60º... It's pleasant outside, cool, most of the snow's melted, and everything's sort of moist as a result. I love winter, but I love spring even more, and this little taste really makes me want it to get here soon. Reminds me of why I love everything about spring, basically. Alas, we're supposed to get snow and cold for the rest of the week, but still, this little break from all that is very refreshing...   *contented purr* ~ ToM

Now Just What Is Going On Here?

Last summer I planted a bunch of things around the back yard. Over the weekend, I noticed that a few of them were starting to grow, I think four out of a row of six I planted. Well, today, I was outside (enjoying the 40ºF weather, eating a banana, and wishing somebody had been around to give me strange looks) and noticed that a fifth of said plant had popped up. Not in one of the remaining two spots.   Yes, I know how that happened (I think some of the plants we got had two shoots coming up), b

Ignoring Who They Are...

...I don't think the Nuva Phantoka are terrible as sets.   They have a plethora of recolored pieces, among which are some I've been wanting since 2006 – white round Inika feet and (apparently) silver smooth Inika chest armor. Dark bluish grey Mantax feet, Piraka legs (unless they're light bluish grey, which would be wonderful, but even the leaked pictures didn't establish firmly what color they were), Inika thigh armor, Inika bodies... a dark bluish grey Kongu Mahri body construction is good in

Delays

So that took a lot longer than I had expected. There were a number of delays, five to be precise, and most of them weather-related, but I've finally posted Hewkii Mahri revamped. Seriously. If you know how I usually photograph stuff, you'll understand why weather causes delays. That and getting home after dark two days per week.   But anyway, click the picture below to go see him. If you didn't run across the slightly blurry early-morning photo I uploaded on Tuesday. Which is actually right her

God Of The Flowing Hair

:: ::  I love Apollo. Or at least the one translation I read that rendered the part where he appears to Ascanius as "Apollo, God of the Flowing Hair", which is an absolutely wonderful description. In fact I like most of the gods and goddesses who show up throughout the Aeneid. They give entertaining speeches and are all dramatic (or at least Venus and Juno are toward each other) or wise and just and awesome.   And yes, the Latin AP is tomorrow. Should be fun. Some things to remember from the

Favorite Set Review Photos Ever?

Quite possibly? (out of my own photos, I mean, of course.) I don't know; I'm just really really pleased with how the photos in my review of Gresh turned out. I think I just finally figured out how to light them and then how to edit them afterwards to make the colors and brightness perfect.   And I'm also irrationally fond of this one:     I think it's just the way his pose turned out. I was just messing around with him, but he ended up like he was looking off at someone out of the frame, his

The River Sings

At this moment, I am eating a pop-tart, drinking Sprite (oh the glory!), listening to Amarantine (It's in the Rain just finished), and wearing contacts. My eyes are still getting used to the last (and my goodness, they're hard to put in, especially since I have fairly narrow eyes), so things are simultaneously blurry and in focus, but that'll fix itself. It's also grey and cool outside, and was raining earlier.   Life is awesome. *sings along with The River Sings*   Incidentally, the female fo

Of Stress And Vowel Length

No, this isn't the often-promised entry about naming trends. I've had so much to do this week that I haven't had time to do anything that I didn't absolutely have to, really, and since I'm a bit on the sick side at the moment I don't really feel like hunting through things to compare names.   So this entry deals with a question of stress in Bionicle names. Which means that if the title meant nothing to you, much of this entry probably won't either, so feel free to ignore it if that's the case.
