That is correct. You need to change your staff before approval - all Vorzahk (if that's what you are, judging by your av and banner) have Staff of Erasing.

I am highly considering this, since I am an old-school Bionicle fan and this throwback to the Vahki is just plain AWESOME in my eyes. But I've already resigned myself to a group-change in the near future. But maybe, just maybe......
