"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."

"What is essential is invisible to the eye," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

"It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important."

"It is the time I have wasted for my rose — " said the little prince, so that he would be sure to remember.

"Men have forgotten this truth," said the fox. "But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose..."

"I am responsible for my rose," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

Beautiful story. Very beautiful indeed, and perhaps the most inspiring I've ever read. A line of this excerpt just so happens to be my senior quote, in fact.

The Little Prince?

Man, they need better children's books titles, like The Little Mongol Warlord, The Little Saracen Assassin, or The Little Highlander. But The Little Prince? Man, who cares about Princes?

Where be this quote from?

The Little Prince, a very good book that I highly recommend. ;)

That's weird. Here at my school 7th graders are forced to read it and they hate it. >> I never had to read it though.

I must say, Bfa, your best yet. I highly recommend you read Flowers for Algernon, which is just as tragic as The Little Prince.

Flowers for Algernon was far more tragic in my eyes. The Little Prince ended happily-- the prince went back to his home to see his flower. And "it was not such a heavy body." If the story had stated that he had died, it would have been tragic, for the wonderful story would have ended for no reason, just "cut off" after his death. But if the story teaches you anything, it is that he did not die, for "the eyes are blind. One must look with the heart..."

In Flowers for Algernon, the tragedy at the end is terrible and depressing because the main character comes to understand it before it happens. That he can understand it without any apparent delusions is heartbreaking, because it demonstrates that the fact does exist for him to understand-- the exact opposite of the ending to The Little Prince, where it becomes clear that nothing material exists, not even death.
