Classic Rock > Rap Proof

Boogie Monsta

Rapping takes all the skill of an auctioneer. Seriously. It's not hard. I can do it.

However, classic rock takes skill. Eddie Van Halen didn't just pick up a guitar, hit the demo button, and start talking fast.

He practiced for years until he had the skill to play things like Hot For Teacher.

Seriously. They're nowhere close to equal, Beloved. At least in that respect.

Memoria.

EDIT: All rock applies, Classic rock just happens to be the debate had in a previous entry.

Here's another interesting thing to consider:

American Idol is obviously a MAJOR thing. Millions of people vote for the favorite singers every year.

Now let's think about it. Winner's have included singers of country, rock, alternative, pop, broadway, dance, etc. But those annoying screamers never even make it past auditions and the few rappers who do can't make it through hollywood week.

Also, call it "music" if you like, it takes no talent. I could find a 6 month year old kid, neglect to feed it for a while, and get the same kind of screaming as those death metal types for free (actually it'd be cheaper since I'm saving on food as well...).

But it wouldn't pay off in the long run because you'd be arrested for starving the child. :o

Not if you live in a country where even getting rotten food is rare.

As for the music, It does take skill to touch on a personal subject. See: Uncommon Valor (For Rap) See: Pretty Much Any classic Rock song (obvious)

Lolno. Rap does take skill, well not most rap you hear on radio now a days. Have you heard like, actual non-mainstream REAL lyrical rap? It's skill. A lot.

I don't like a certain genre of music therefore it sucks and does not count as a real genre of music.

Nice reasoning.

Edit: Also, out of all the songs you picked. Hot For Teacher? Honestly. Pick something like Eruption if you're going to pick a Van Halen song.

He doesn't seem to be using tastes as reasoning here. =/

I like instruments over lyrics, so naturally I like rock better. Not gonna comment on if it IS better since I don't listen to enough good (or bad) rap to compare.

Assuming that he isn't doing that, his logic is flawed. Just because a certain art form or musical style appears to take less talent/skill doesn't make it any less of an art form or musical style. Plus the fact his match up isn't fair. He picks Eddie Van Halen, who many would consider to be the greatest guitarist to ever pick up an ax, as his representative? While Eddie Van Halen is a guitarist, most rappers are vocalists. It's an apples to oranges comparison and doesn't work.

Thank you so much for that. I've been trying to find a way to put that into words for a long time. You summed up perfectly the sad truth of the reasoning of every rap-hater I've met.

Perhaps what I said was a little over the top, but the reasoning I'm seeing here isn't any more correct. It's not, "I don't like a certain genre and therefore it sucks and doesn't count." No, what it really comes down to for me is, "It sucks and THAT is why I hate it."

Totally backwards. I've not been saying, "Rap sucks," without reasoning. I've GIVEN reasons.

Care to counter this then?

Lol. But my point was that you can't really compare a guitarist to a rapper just because the two use completely different skills. Therefore it would be unfair to compare any sort of guitarist to any sort of rapper.

@Beloved: I hear your arguments, and you're for the most part right. I guess it comes down to the type of skill you respect. Personally I don't count fast talking to a beat anywhere close as that much of a skill as guitar shredding, but that's just me. Like if I had compared it to Nirvana, that'd be wrong, cuz even I can play 90% of Nirvana stuff. But people like Eddie Van Halen took a whole lot of practice to become that good.

On account of not knowing how much practice the GOOD rap you mentioned takes, I'll not judge it. Care to enlighten me?

In closing, it's all a matter of opinion.

Memoria.

Rap takes just as much skill and talent as any other instrument you can pick up. The skills and talents needed are different than other instruments.

Yeah, I got your point, but once again it comes down to a matter of perspective. To me, it's not really comparing apples to oranges. To me, it's more like the classic rock we're discussing is an apple, but rap and that screamy stuff is more like celery and asparagus (except I like asparagus, so more like lima beans). To me, music is a fruit and therefore the "Rock Apple" falls under there. This other stuff is a vegetable, meaning that there simply is no comparison if you catch my drift.

But, as always, these are my beliefs. I could give more reasons, but it's touching territory that shouldn't be on BZP.

Bad analogy. Because both rap and rock should be considered a fruit just because they're the same thing: music. If anything, art should be the vegetables. =P
