Bionicle: Year One - Misc. Ideas

Sumiki

Here are some random ideas for Bionicle: Year One.

Opening sequence: No extra work here, just the already-made '01 video of the canisters falling from the sky, with possibly some drums in the background to increase the intensity. I was also thinking that the video could flash onto the screen and fade out, much like the effect used on the text in those "WE ARE WAITING" banners.

The video continues, until we see Onua explode out of the can. Onua's parts are in the background, and smoke is rising from the canister, as the graphics fade in with the "Play" "Save" and etc.

Actual Gameplay: I have a few ideas floating around, but the main concept is to have it episodic - you complete the first Onua level (a nod to the canceled game that started with Onua's level) and then access other episodes in different Koros, based on different mini-storylines and MNOLG stuff, i.e. an Onua Vs. Lewa level, or a Tahu-underground-with-lots-of-Kofo-Jaga level. You can even go back to already-completed levels for fun or to get more masks.

In each level, you will be able to collect Kanohi masks (and the rare Makoki Stone parts seen only six times throughout the game) and talk to villagers and Turaga.

Once every level is complete and you have collected all of the masks, you choose your Toa and you descend into Mangaia. I was thinking that right before that, there would be a cutaway scene, a 3D rendering of the famous MNOLG sequence where they descend. Different challenges will be thrown at you underneath Mangaia, such as the Shadow Toa and the Manas.

After all of Makuta's cronies are defeated, you fight Makuta for a bit, and if you beat him, a 3D render of the famous Toa Vs. Makuta scene plays, including the part where Takua awakens the Swarms, setting up Bionicle: Year Two …

I really like. I really, really like it. Too bad 2001 and 2002 can't be combined. It would be cool if it had them transformed into the Toa Nuva.

Intro: Good idea; just make sure you use a high quality version of the video!

Menu: You don't need save on the main menu. :P That could be on the menu you open while playing the levels. I think the menu would be good with these options:

Play

New game

Load

Options

Possibly screen resolutions

Control settings

Sound settings

Quit/Exit

Gameplay: Good; one thing I thought about was that you should come back to levels and collect the Makoki stones, instead of getting them in the end of every level (Don't know if that was an idea of yours or not), that way you get out more playing value.

Anyways, great ideas! ^_^

For the Main menu how about.

Play

New Game

Load

Extras

Options

In the 'Extras' section you could have an awards section were you gain awards during for things you do in levels like on Glatorian Arena and BIONICLE Heroes. (I dunno, 50 Rahi Defeated as Lewa and such.) You could also in this section have a sub-menu called 'Soundtracks' were you can play the different soundtracks from the game.

In option syou could change the SFX volume and Music Volume and such.

Sound good?

That's BIONICLE: Year Two. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. :P

I was thinking that the Stones would be hidden randomly in different levels - optimally, each of the six Toa have one randomly placed in one of their levels. More replay value that way.

Awards sound good, that might be added at the end after the rest of it is completed. Seems easy.

You could add a credits section to the menu.

Of course. I wouldn't want to forget you guys! :P

Now, I just stumbled upon this project when browsing the blog community, and it sounds interesting. I know nothing whatsoever about 3D modelling, but I might be able to come up with some level plans.

And a suggestion; how about using the stories from the backs of the Quest For The Masks-trading cards #101-136? You know, those with stories on on one side, and drawings on the other. Many of those would be good as game levels, I reckon. :)

Great idea! Here's the cards btw :D

Or you could just ask me, since I have them all, other than Tahu´s Triumph. :D

Yeah, I know the link is easier, and a better and more organized solution, I´m just trying to show off with my collection. :P

EDIT:

I just thought of something. The makoki stones are a nice touch, but you´d need something similar for each game, in order to keep them related to each other. Like in -03, you´d have to collect Nuva Cube-platethingies, and in -04, you´d collect Great Discs, and in -08, key stones for the Codrex, and so on?

Great. The more levels, the better, since we can get a lot and then cut the ones that aren't as good, leaving us the best possible game.

That's one of the only cards I have. Sumiki, I'm writing down some ideas I have, but it's late here so I'll problably not finish writing today, but I might send you some of my ideas tommorow. ;)

But if I´m going to make any levels, I´ll need to know what each character can do, what each enemy can do, if there´s going to be any bosses, what objects (Makoki stones, equipment, score points, extra lifes, etc.), and so on. Information alway comes before direct planning. ;)

Maybe we should all brainstorm and show what we've come up with to each others later?

Great idea. Except for the 'Later'-part, so I´ve come up with something right now:

The characters can all do the same things, except each of them has a Special Ability (SA):

TAHU:

SA: Can walk on lava, and loses his Life Energy half as fast as the other characters.

KOPAKA:

SA: When he hits an enemy that isn´t a boss, the enemy is stunned/frozen for three-to-five seconds.

LEWA:

SA: Can double-jump.

GALI:

SA: Can swim, and therefore cross water.

POHATU:

SA: Can go into a PowerRun-mode, which gives him the ability to escape from an enemy quickly.

ONUA:

SA: Can use his claws to smash or lift pieces of the environment.

What do you think?

Great. I'll add them to the Levels/Characters/Bosses entry. :)

I think this goes under misc. ideas. :)

How about giving each character an extra, more simple level? Something endless game where you try to score as many points as possible - like Pacman or Space Invaders? Then, here´s my suggestions (subject to change, obviously):

TAHU: Lava-surfing [sPACE INVADERS-STYLE]

KOPAKA: Gukko-Kahu Riding (taken from a QftM-card) [sPACE INVADERS-STYLE]

LEWA: Fighting Nui-Kopen in a treetop. [The style of all those arcade games with people fighting each other]

GALI: Fighting Ruki Fish underwater. [The style of all those arcade games with people fighting each other]

POHATU: Running through the desert (someone can come up with a reason later) [sPACE INVADERS-STYLE]

ONUA: Digging through the tunnels of Onu-Koro. [PACMAN-STYLE]

What would the point of these, i.e. what could the points be used on?

Well, not neccessarily more than a hi-score tablet. Like in Pacman. ;)

Oh, so just for fun?

Yup. ^_^

And on another note: What could be used as Extra Lives? The toa will need something to 'charge up their elemental power', or however we´ll explain it. My suggestion is lightstones, or eventually - gears. I mean, what would make more sense to give them energy, than parts to rebuild themselves?

Speaking of lives, how about we use this to work in MoSM's minigames? You could be given the option to play the game to gain, say, extra energy when you respawn, or just skip them if you want.

While I do like the minigame idea, I don't know about having them integrated into the levels, it kind of interrupts the action. Maybe the standard "enemies drop HP" thing, in the form of lightstones, gears, or energy orb-type things, or recharging, but then you could just wait around until you have full health and never die if you have the patience to keep recharging.

Agree´d. No recharging, but you´d be able to pick up gears/orbs to build up your health. Perhaps, though, there could be an elemental power along with the HP, which does recharge.
