Bionicle: Year One - Misc. Ideas

Sumiki

Here are some random ideas for Bionicle: Year One.

Opening sequence: No extra work here, just the already-made '01 video of the canisters falling from the sky, with possibly some drums in the background to increase the intensity. I was also thinking that the video could flash onto the screen and fade out, much like the effect used on the text in those "WE ARE WAITING" banners.

The video continues, until we see Onua explode out of the can. Onua's parts are in the background, and smoke is rising from the canister, as the graphics fade in with the "Play" "Save" and etc.

Actual Gameplay: I have a few ideas floating around, but the main concept is to have it episodic - you complete the first Onua level (a nod to the canceled game that started with Onua's level) and then access other episodes in different Koros, based on different mini-storylines and MNOLG stuff, i.e. an Onua Vs. Lewa level, or a Tahu-underground-with-lots-of-Kofo-Jaga level. You can even go back to already-completed levels for fun or to get more masks.

In each level, you will be able to collect Kanohi masks (and the rare Makoki Stone parts seen only six times throughout the game) and talk to villagers and Turaga.

Once every level is complete and you have collected all of the masks, you choose your Toa and you descend into Mangaia. I was thinking that right before that, there would be a cutaway scene, a 3D rendering of the famous MNOLG sequence where they descend. Different challenges will be thrown at you underneath Mangaia, such as the Shadow Toa and the Manas.

After all of Makuta's cronies are defeated, you fight Makuta for a bit, and if you beat him, a 3D render of the famous Toa Vs. Makuta scene plays, including the part where Takua awakens the Swarms, setting up Bionicle: Year Two …

We could have small Rahi come by if you wait too long, and to kill them you'd have to use the energy that you built up by just standing around.

Hm... so perhaps the system should be like this: you have an HP bar or some sort of measurement and another bar for elemental energy. Health can be regained from objects dropped from defeated enemies (gears?), EE recharges over time and can be regained form enemy drops (energy orbs?). Small Rahi wander around and attack you, so you can't just sit still without defending yourself, using some EE.

This seems like a wonderful project. Unfortunately, the only thing I would be able to help with is storyline, and seeing as this is a game based on the BIONICLE storyline...

I'll do my best to spread the word, however,

Just courious...

I just thought of something. The makoki stones are a nice touch, but you´d need something similar for each game, in order to keep them related to each other. Like in -03, you´d have to collect Nuva Cube-platethingies, and in -04, you´d collect Great Discs, and in -08, key stones for the Codrex, and so on?

Did anyone see this? =]

And BTW, we could include cross-references in the games. In each game, we could place an object that´s not supposed to come before the next game. In this one, that would be a bohrok or a krana or suchlike? You know, just in the background, where only the observant players would notice it. :)

The games don't have to be related like that, but the Bohrok in the background would be funny.

That´s basically why I wanted it, too. I know this may be a bit too ambitious, but how about these being in the games:

Y1 (2001): A bohrok is hidden in the background.

Y2 (2002): You encounter a cave filled with slug-like creatures (this cave later turns out to be where the turaga kept their kraata).

Y3 (2003): The Morbuzahk is hidden in the background.

Y4 (2004): One of the levels is covered in spider webs.

Y5 (2005): On a random wall in the Great Temple, there´s inscriptions that resembles Voya Nui and the Ignika.

Y6 (2006): In the large can af antidermis in the Piraka Fortress, a squid is swimming around.

Y7 (2007): A statue of Krika/Antroz/another Karda Nui-Makuta is hidden in the background.

Y8 (2008): The Skrall Shield Maze/Symbol is seen on the wall of the Codrex.

Y9 (2009): As an extra feature, there´s a secret level where you can play as one of the Stars.

Wow. Those are awesome.

How about a Hapori Tohu cameo?

I don´t think it can get much more awesome than that. BZP references are win. :)

How about making the line 'It Sucks' appear once in each game? XD

I admit i copied the idea from BNG... but hey, it's awesome.

It would be nice :P

That´s just even better... a cross-reference to BZP and B:NG. :D

So, what about this:

Infected Lewa: You-Cannot-Stop-The-Swarm! The-Swarm-Is-Everything!

Onua: That Sucks.

Gali: We´re trapped between rock and lava!

Onua: And it Sucks.

Lewa: They were trying to suck-out our power...

Onua: Well, they sucked, that´s much we´re sure of.

Gali: ...But instead, their want of power became their own doom.

Whenua: And as the last true toa-hero, I´m stuck here with a hammerhead and a ko-matoran. Wow, that sucks. At least I have my past.

Whenua: Hey, do you know what the thing about being injured with visorak poison is?

Matau (sarcastic): No, Whenua, I don´t know. What´s the thing about being injured with visorak poison?

Whenua: It Sucks.

Kongu: That´s unfair! I´ve been riding gukkos all my life, and then you get the flying mask!

Nuparu: Yeah, it Sucks, don´t it?

I know this sounds repetetive, but in fact, the line would only appear once in each game. ;)

I LOL'd hard. :P

I like the references - but the references-to-the-next-year could deviate a bit too much from the canon. However, I like the "It sucks" appearances, and HT really should appear somewhere. Possibly a non-canon unlockable level?

Oh, but it´d be an easter egg! Everyone loves easter eggs. =J

Besides, it´d mean we had one model less to make in 3D each year. If your 3D artists make a bohrok 3D model for this year, they can just recolour that, and we´ll have basically all the enemies for the next game. ;)

Here's my ideas.

First levels:

Onua: you have to carve a path through destroyable scenery while fighting rahi.

Tahu: Idunno

Kopaka: You have to shield-slide down the mountain while a muaka shoots snow and ice at you with its tread.

Lewa: you have to swing from vines and jump so you can get onto a gukko a matoran is riding above you.

Gali: swim away from takea sharks as fast as possible, and hope you reach ga-koro before you get eaten.

Pohatu: Generic fight the monsters till you get to Po-koro.

Once you reach your Koro, the turaga will send you on quests (E.G. "Defeat twenty rahi", "Find Macku's Hewkii Plush", "Defend the statues"), the rewards being stuff like bamboo disks, madu cabolo, and hints on the wherabouts of the masks(E.G. "Look on the tallest monument" for mount Ihu).

Also, Achievement ideas:

Pyromaniac: Complete all of Tahu's levels.

Hurricane: Complete all of Lewa's levels.

Ice Cold!: Complete all of Kopaka's levels.

Aquanaut: Complete all of Gali's levels.

Great Stone Dragon!:Complete all of Pohatu's levels.

Idunno for Onua

Duckies: complete the Mangai levels

Hunter: Defeat "x" amount of rahi.

War they Want: Defeat "y" amount of rahi.

Fight to the Finish: Defeat ALL rahi.

Burninator: Destroy all destroyable scenery.

Savage: Defeat "X" Rahi with only physical strikes

Sniper: Defeat "X" rahi with only elemental strikes.

I like this idea!

But I do have a question: How will the Toa receive the Golden Kanohi? I know in MNOLG, the six great masks were put in the Suva, and then the gold mask popped out, but in the book, there are six Toa statues at Kini-Nui and after placing all six of one Toa's Kanohi onto its face, the gold mask appears on the statue. I'd assume that the book's scenario overwrites the game's, but the book is 'ambiguously canon' or whatever. So yeah, that's my question.

Correction: 1 1/2 games :P

You not only have to get the Makoki Stones, but you will have to get all of the Great Masks. Noble Masks will be hidden but not required.

I think PA was reffering to how it´d be done - by putting the masks on the statues, or simply by having them appear.

Also, are we using the year-to-year references (Bohrok, etc.)?

There will be 3D renders of famous scenes from the MNOLG scattered throughout the game, including Takua "awakening" the Bohrok. The Toa actually battling the Bohrok and the Bahrag will be in the sequel to this game, Bionicle: Year Two.

Great - but I´m going for a definite (Yes/no/dunno) answer here. Are we using the references? If so, we ought also to have a Bohrok in one of the levels.

And sorry if I´m a bit impatient here... it´s just that I still get different answers on this.

(Also, the bahrag will make a brilliant boss level :D )

Here's my ideas.

First levels:

Onua: you have to carve a path through destroyable scenery while fighting rahi.

Tahu: Idunno

Kopaka: You have to shield-slide down the mountain while a muaka shoots snow and ice at you with its tread.

Lewa: you have to swing from vines and jump so you can get onto a gukko a matoran is riding above you.

Point of View (as in, just my opinion): Wouldn´t it be better to follow the storyline? Each Toa has an 'Arrival'-card in the QftM-cards, and some of them are described more specifically in books, comics and games. :)

Also, I vote against letting the mighty toa heroes arrive to Mata Nui just to find Macku´s doll. :P

I like these. Can I add some? =)

Island Defender: Find all Haus.

All-seeing eye: Find all Akakus.

Taking It To The Sky: Find all Mirus.

Breathholder: Find all Kaukaus.

Roadrunner: Find all Kakamas.

Stronger Than Ever/World´s Strongest Toa: Find all Pakaris.

Necromancer: Lose the game (minimum) once as each Toa.

Immortal: Complete a level without losing any Health.

Addictive: Spend more than (in total) 5hours playing.

Clairvoyánt (or however that word is spelled): Encounter the hidden B:Y2 preview (A non-canon bohrok in a level).

Ultimate Gamer´s Year 1 Medal: Achieve all other Achievements in the game.

^_^

I like most of the achievements - but there's one problem: you need to collect all of the masks to advance to the Makuta multi-boss level. So the Island Defender - World's Strongest Toa achievements will have to be won in order to complete the game. In that sense, they're not real achievements - they're necessary. See what I'm saying?

But if we do include those, why not make them BZP rank references, like "stalwart defender" or "lightning voyager"?

@MoSM: I think we should include references, but maybe slightly modify them for more canon purposes. Now, I know that "it sucks" and the HT cameos will be not canon, but we'll include a little leeway for comic effect. Lemme go through 'em:

2001: I think a cave drawing would be better.

2002: 'Tis good.

2003: Once again, a cave drawing would work a bit better.

2004: Not one of the levels - it'd be too obvious and too far off the canon. Visorak in the Archives, maybe?

2005: 'Tis good.

2006: 'Tis good, and funny too.

2007: Mutate them and have them swim around, and 'tis good.

2008: 'Tis good.

2009: I'd rather get through the 2010 year before deciding that.

IMO, there could be one or two achievements named after BZP ranks. But we have to keep in mind that this is a Bionicle game, not a BZP game. With Hapori Tohu and all, it must not be too obvious.
