Mass Effect 2

Black Six

I beat Mass Effect 2 tonight (yay, less than a month!). I thoroughly enjoyed the game and will definitely be playing through it again in the future. While at first I wasn't sure how I liked the toned-down RPG nature of it, it definitely grew on me. There are still some things I would have liked to see back, but oh well.

My two biggest gripes are scanning planets (soooo tedious) and the difficulty in getting money. In the original game you could easily but every weapon from every vendor, which may not be realistic, but at least you know you can if you want to. In the sequel, I wasn't even able to scrounge up enough cash to buy all the upgrades that I wanted, and that just doesn't seem right if you ask me.

As far as the ending goes, I really like the 'big reveal,' and the final mission, but it kind of felt like it was lacking compared to the first. There was a much lesser sense of urgency and importance without the council and the huge fleets involved. Shepard was just like, 'it's ok, I got this,' and then we went home. I did like the resolution with the Illusive man though, it sets the stage up well for the third game. In fact, I think that's where my dissatisfaction comes from. The first can definitely be a standalone experience, but the second seems like it requires the first and third to hold it up. I'm sure I'll love the final game too, but I wouldn't have minded if it was a bit more independent. I guess it was a lot like Halo 2 that way (except without playing as the Arbiter).

Anyway, next up is finishing up Dragon Age: Origins, and then on to Bioshock 2!

My favorite part was the Illusive Man. He was so cool in the cut scenes, and...am i the only one who thinks he actually looks like Martin Sheen?

Might have something to do with the fact that he's voiced by Martin Sheen and it made sense to model him after him to the looks matched the voice.

dude its more realistic when you have less money and takes loads to time to get rich lol

I wouldn't mind if it took time, I'm annoyed because it's impossible. I did every single quest and side mission and unlocked almost every container/safe/etc, and I still didn't have enough money.

wow then that is kinda dumb can you loot dead bodies for money?

Nope, your main source of income is completing missions. Here and there you'll find safes or containers or terminals you can get money from too. Like I said, they really toned down the RPG aspects of it.

maybe they should learn from kotor

To be honest, the fact that gathering money was so easy in the first one kinda bothered me. Just play a few side-missions, gather 1,000,000 credits, then buy top-of-the-line gear for your squad and you're set for the rest of the game. Far too easy.

ME2's system makes it so you have to be careful with your credits, saving up so you can only get what you really want or need, and not just gobble up everything. Makes it much more challenging, and fun.

I think they were trying to get away from KOTOR and their more traditional RPGs.

Yet the make it ridiculously easy to get all the resources you need to do research? It doesn't seem very balanced. I know what you mean about it being too easy, you're right that ME1 was pretty sad in that respect. I think, however, that if I got through the trouble of finding every planet with an anomaly and doing all the side missions and loyalty missions and what have you, that I should be able to buy everything. That's just me though.

i mean like looting bodies for small amounts of money and stuff

Right, that's what I mean. You can't loot bodies, you no longer get experience for killing enemies or performing certain tasks, you only get it for completing missions. It's just little things like that that set it apart from their earlier games like KOTOR and ME1.

But I feel that it's more realistic. Running off doing lone ranger stuff should not, IMO, let you buy enough stuff to take on a third-world planet.

I don't want realism. I'm playing a game where we can travel between solar systems using dark energy for Pete's sake! I want fun!

Oh you will. The lack of looting bodies every ten seconds is a godsend. Think about it, you never get anything useful off of dead bodies anyway. Typically you get a weapon 10 levels below what is useful, some item you can't even use, and about 5 credits.

As for Money in Mass Effect 2. Just wait until you do a New Game with an import again. You'll start with 100,000 credits for ME1 and 200,000 credits for beating ME2. Starting with 300,000 Credits makes it a whole lot easier to get all the purchases.

But I'd also say that I kinda liked the apparent lack of money. It made me pickier with what I bought. Rather than just tossing away my money on things I couldn't use (ie. being an Adept and buying assualt rifle upgrades or tech damage upgrades) and focused on what would make the biggest impact for my character. That's not to say the other upgrades aren't nice for the team, I just felt that being forced to make a decision on whether or what I was buying was a wise choice was better than "Oh don't worry, you'll be able to afford everything anyway."

I played through on the normal difficulty and I think I only died a handful of times during the whole game. Obviously if you bump it up you can expect to die more. :P

But...

Is it fun to hold onto your old rifle, name it Bessie, and battle the wave of darknesses with it...

Or to decide between over 9000 variations of guns? :P

Personally, I think anything's an improvement over Mass Effect 1's arcane min-maxing-tastic inventory system, and I thought that it worked pretty well to see them experimenting a bit, and it worked pretty well, in my book. Though I do miss looting bodies, since that tends to be the highlight of my life.

I had no problem getting a ton of money, but that could also be because I played very Renegade and would like, beat up old ladies on the street for money. :P

Also because I'm an exploration fiend. MUST SEE EVERY CORNER OF AN AREA.

Not gonna defend the whole planet scanning thing. Yeah. Personally, I'd never have enough resources for the upgrades I wanted. I basically just used money for buying space hamsters.

But I enjoyed it, over all. It was a bloody good followup to a bloody good game.

I explored every square inch of every single planet when I played the first one. I imagine I'll do the same in the second. XD

As much as I loved Mass Effect 2, I would have appreciated seeing the customization of weapons and armor that ME1 had. The combat in ME2 was darn near flawless, though. Its the most fun I've ever had in any shooter.

That being said, Mass Effect 3 has so much to live up to.

Heh, just ordered ME1 last week, myself. BioShock 1 as well.

...Yeah, I have a habit of buying games only after their sequel is released. xP

I need to do that too, waiting makes things cheaper. ^_^
