Thinking With Portals

I've been doing it a lot recently.

It's scary.

For example, if you had one portal on one side of the world and another on the other side, would there be any delay? If not, how? If so, what would it be like to stick your arm through one of the portals? Would there be some sort of "space" or "tunnel" between them?

Then I thought about how if you shot two Portals onto the ground near each other and had two people of equal weight step on each other's feet, they'd probably be able to stand.

I told this to my friend and she was like "And if you shot two portals on the ground right next to each other you could stand on your own feet" and I was like "BLIND=MOWN".

Or if you spilled a cup of coffee and happened to have super-fast reflexes and a portal gun, you could save the day (and the coffee!) by putting a portal on the floor and one on the ceiling so it falls right back into the cup. Hooray!

Or if you were bored, you could just leave it falling forever, like one of those cool little fountains... only with coffee...

And you could practice tennis really easy. Just shoot 2 portals on the wall next to each other and serve the ball into it and it'll serve back to you. You could also do this with ping-pong.

I've been planning ways to kill Velociraptors with portals in my gymnasium for years!

I thought you were saying that at first until I read it more carefully. Sure blinded my mown.

So what if you were trapped in a Star Wars style garbage compressor and you shot a portal on both sides of the room?

Coincidentally, I've thought about that, too; you'd be crushed by your own body. :]

Lol, I thought the same thing.

Also, put a portal on the top of a slide and one on the bottom. >:D

Depends on the kind of portal. :P I have invented a kind with zero delay, but it's classified. :ziplip:

A couple days ago my friend was using a portal gun in Darksiders. He put one above him and one below him. The portals can only be shot on certain points. the cutscene of you falling out takes almost as long as to get in, leaving very little time to shoot another portal. VERY fun to watch.

If you don't line it up just right though, you could end up kickingyourself where it hurts. :P

my interpretation/understanding of the concept behind a portal is that there cannot possibly be a delay

you have to go in while simultaneously coming out

so if you stuck your hand in one side it'd just come out the other, it'd be like if instead of the ground, there was some sky there or the inside of a room or whatever

no delay holmes

but I don't really know what to make of the gravity thing, because if there's sky on the other side of the portal what's pulling you down?

What if you shot 2 portals completely flat on the ground and you jumped down one?

Would you then fall into solid ground, or would you stand on top of one of them?

I'm scared. :fear:
