Favorite Bionicle setting?
PlasmaJaller replied to Hahli, the Chronicler's topic in Bionicle Discussion
For me, Ga-Koro will always be the way it was depicted in the 2003 game. It was the one level where the graphics weren't that bad. Verdant canyons filled with corals truly sound like the dream. Though, I'll have to say, Metru Nui will always be my favorite setting due to how it filled me with wonders me as a child. There was something so elegant and fascinating about the architectures from the promotional vids. I couldn't get enough of it. -
Speculation topic for what it could have been like if Miramax had adapted years 2006, 2007 and 2008 into movies. How much would the stories have differed from the current canon we know today ? The year that interests me the most would be 2006 with all the characters it takes into account: the Toa Inika, the Piraka, the Voyatoran resistance, the Toa Nuva, Axonn, Brutaka, Vezok and probably Karzani - although I think it would be best to cut him from the film, unless you were going with a two parts movie. Clearly, all those characters wouldn't have gotten the same share of screentime, especially in a one-hour movie Part of the problem would be the Piraka being individuals with full-fledged personalities, instead of mooks like the Rahkshi and the Vahki were. Clearly some characters would be more prominent than others on both Toa and Piraka side. The way I picture it, Jaller and Hahli would automatically be front of center due to seniority. However, it is obvious Matoro would also get a pretty big role. Jaller, as the protagonist, would the leader struggling to take the best decisions and protect his team, with Hahli as his emotional support and love interest, building up from where MoL left them. Matoro, as the deuterotagonist, would be introduced as the weakest and least confident Toa, enough to make the viewers sympathize with him - if done right. Through trust and perseverance, both characters would lift each other up and become full-fledged Toa heroes by the end of the movie. By making newcomer Matoro an equal to Jaller, you would have the groundwork set for his decisive role in 2007. As for the villains, I think Zaktann and Vezok would be the most prominent Piraka, since the former was the leader and the latter was the face of all the promotional work. Hopefully, they would all get their time to shine, but I think it would be hard when you also have Brutaka and Vezon to consider. Something tells me you would have probably gotten a few lines from Avak and Thok at the very best. That is, however, if Miramax was to get rappers to voice the entire team. Someone made that joke once and I wouldn't underestimate LEGO considering how hard they pushed "the gang is on the loose". The worst that could happen wouldn't be the voice performance but the Piraka taking screentime away from characters and their development. Considering how drastic the tone shift was from the second half of the franchise, I wonder if Miramax could have landed the hit in keeping the soul and atmosphere from the previous movies. That's my vision for 2006, what about y'all?

Why People Dislike the Toa Mistika
PlasmaJaller replied to Illuminatus's topic in Bionicle Discussion
I really got into Bionicle with the Toa Metru, so I never had the same investment with the Toa Nuva - even though my very first was Kopaka. I could tell the drastic design changes (especially Gali and Onua's), but they never shocked me like it did for many - not to mention I didn't have any of the 2008 sets. I got to say though it's pretty sad the Toa team it all started with seemed to become less and less relevant, starting with Takanuva's entrance. At the end of the day, they don't feel like those legendary heroes they used to be presented as. The reveal of the Toa Metru made them less special and the fact that they had their handed to them by the Piraka, forcing the Inika/Mahri to go in and save the day in their stead really made them look like "has-been", like a new generation had to step in. They ended up awakening Mata Nui (that's what people say but wasn't it the Toa Inika who did it?), but turns out that's what Makuta wanted anyway. Stars' focus was on Tahu in his Mata form collecting the pieces of the golden armor to defeat Makuta's armyr, but the franchise more or less became Mata Nui's story by Wave 2 of 2019. Bionicle never was about one hero or one team, but it should be appreciated G2 chose the original crew as its front and center. -
At least some of those bootlegs are a bit more creative and make new pieces that can be interesting material for MOCs - I can't tell about quality though since I've never bought one of those bootlegs. That Sea Star's design is pretty kino. iu[2]

What does the DS version do better than the console game? I'm genuinely curious. -
The most savage moment in Bionicle?
PlasmaJaller replied to Lenny7092's topic in Bionicle Discussion
Keetongu smashing Sidorak like the insect he was and chuckling about it. Although it's only second to Vakama slaying Lehrak with his staff and, most importantly, his moves and body. -
Hi! This is the topic for any thoughts on my story/concept Bionicle - Legends of Novakia!

That two-headed combiner looks like it (they?) wants to be put out of its misery.

I should start off by saying I've always found new continuities that borrow from the original work more interesting and easier to get into since their lore can't be as vast as Greg's - I've never read his stories back then and, to be fair, I can't begin to get into them. The Legend of Ignaqua is my favorite fan story because it doesn't let itself be restrained by canon, instead it takes plenty of established characters and does its own things with them. Would you have expected Vakama and Nokama to fight Maxilo to save Hydraxon who happens to be prince? Yeah, me neither, and that's what I love about it. I'm also very invested in The Legend Rebuilt project, but I hope it will make the most of its new interesting setting and cast and manage to stand as its own thing. All this to say that I prefer making Bionicle stories that are completely separate from canon, since I don't know enough about the deep lore to be able to exploit it. I've been tempted to write about a story similar to Ignaqua's, but for now, I've been working on a sort of "G3" with a whole new setting and array of characters. I will keep updating this topic as my ideas develop or change - if this topic gets attention, that is. And, who knows, maybe one day I'll actually write something, or at least try to MOC some characters with Stud.io. For now, let's get into the basics and see if anyone's interested in reading more about it: * In the middle of an ocean once stood a paradise known as Novakia. For millions of years, its inhabitants prospered, living off the plentiful resources of the island. That was until a shadow fell upon the land and swarms of ravenous aggressors invaded the island to plunder it of its precious resources. At the cost of many losses, the inhabitants managed to fight off the invaders, but they did not leave without a gift that would change Novakia forever. The island was fractured and split into a multitude of smaller lands, becoming what would be known henceforth as the Novakia archipelago. For centuries now, the six tribes that once lived together have been maintaining tense relations. Resources are more precious than they ever were before the Great Split. They claim for themselves whatever land they can get, from the smallest isle to the greatest landmass, as long as there are resources to harness. This often leads to tensions escalating, at which point it is required for the tribes' Champions to intervene. A Champion is a warrior who stand out among their fellow tribesmen by being taller, stronger and more enduring than any of them. Each Champions wields ancestral masks of great power passed down to generations. The original Champions once used the power of these masks to push back the invaders that caused the Great Split. Nowadays, the Champions' main duty is to protect their fellow tribesmen from the threats of the elements and wild beasts and to solve disputes between tribes during duel that decide which tribe obtains what good is being claimed - or at least a bigger portion of what they have agreed to share. This tradition has kept the archipelago from erupting into full-blown wars for centuries, but soon the Champions and their tribes will have to unite. For malicious forces are looming slowly but surely over Novakia. * So this is a mix of 2001-2003 and G2 (mysterious island setting, six heroes protecting their respective villages) with 2009 (tribes settling their differences by having two fighters duel). I intend there to be more to it, but I don't want to throw everything at once - I believe it'll be easier for everyone to follow if I publish info little by little. For now, have the names of the tribes and some of their Champions. Fire Tribe: Magnos / Champion of Fire: Oda (♂) Air Tribe: Veralen / Champion of Air: Netek (♂) Water Tribe: Ocelia / Champion of Water : Lagna (...) Stone Tribe: Kallyon / Champion of Stone : ... (...) Earth Tribe: Gaverik / Champion of Earth: Koru (♀) Ice Tribe: Tundris / Champion of Ice: Tanika (♀) Finally, note that some things are bound to change. That includes names of places and characters. I am not satisfied with the name of some tribes and I have yet to fully figure out the Stone and Water Champions. What's even to say some of these elements won't change? For now, I am much open for thoughts and suggestions on the Review Topic !

I don't see why they couldn't be in the same universe, especially if it's one where mechanical beings are prevalent - you might as well put them in the same universe as the Transformers while at it. But I've never been much of a guy for crossovers, but I'd rather they do their own things their separate ways.

This a crime nobody has commented yet. It could be a little more colorful (way too much grey to my taste, especially for Air guys) but it's a real nice assortment of old and recent pieces! The little guy has a creative design, but I'm not really at ease calling him Kongu - he's just so different from the Matoran we know, you might as well give him an original name. Other than that, I think it's really cool!

HF TV show being made by Miramax?
PlasmaJaller replied to Lenny7092's topic in Hero Factory Discussion
I enjoyed Miramax' design, but it's a matter of taste - and also probably nostalgia. Mouths and eyebrows sound natural for me, since the character had to have a way to show emotion and be relatable. Although I do agree the same approach for HF would have been all kinds of disturbing. The studio that worked on TLR captured the robotic feel to them - although I wasn't fond of some of the character's faces, especially not Stormer and Bulk without their "combat masks" masks. Overall I'm glad we got Miramax for the Bionicle trilogy and the guys from TLR for HF. -
HF was never as deep nor as epic as Bionicle, but it was good fun all around. However, ,as fun as 2011 and 2012 were, I got to say I miss the atmosphere of the 2010 year the most. Those early days had something post CCBS didn't have, I can't quite put my finger on it. I think the closest we went back to it was the Breakout year, that had some amazing toys and was the peak of the franchise. However, I was disappointed with the departure from fighting criminals and turned off by the designs of the sets -the jungle planet animals had cool designs, those monsters, not so much. And then there was the Attack from Below and I had no interest in buying it at all. I get they wanted to experiment, but no excuse in the world could justify not following on that villain factory premise, instead of replacing it with a brain factory out of nowhere. It's really sad it had to go down that way for its two last years. I had a desperate need for a constraction last month, so I got Jet Rocka (the only set from Brain Attacks that interested me) for my birthday and it was a real sent back to those good old days of building and playing with them. That makes HF part of my childhood just as much as Bionicle does.

What Was the Last Piece of BIONICLE Media You Consumed?
PlasmaJaller replied to Master Inika's topic in Bionicle Discussion
It's been more than a decade since I last downloaded the promotional disks for the Toa Metru and man it's like nostalgia kicking me in the balls. They reminded me how much I love Metru Nui's aesthetic. There were much more of those picture puzzle-thingies than I remember but man I could still remember the warm voice of the French narrator. -
I already have a fond memory of their movies, but you just gave me a newfound appreciation of Miramax. It's so upsetting there are creators who think people, most particularly children, are unable to relate to non-human characters. It's safe to assume we all wanted to live on Mata Nui when we were young, but a human kid standing among Toa and Matoran and saving them would have been wrong on so many levels, like something straight out of a fan fiction. Now, weirdly enough, there was one G2 concept art that showed tribal humans and I wasn't as hostile toward that ; however it would have greatly shifted the foundations of the franchise and it would not have sit well with most fans. Overrall Bionicle doesn't need to rely on humans, since they're already human enough for us to be able to relate to them.

Which console game do you like the best?
PlasmaJaller replied to Lenny7092's topic in Bionicle Discussion
Bionicle 2003: A mediocre game in terms of gameplay and graphics that cruelly suffered from rushed development. Those pre-release trailers and cutscenes just upset me because we never got to see the game the developers had planned. Playing each Toa Mata fighting the Rahi and the Bohrok, then defeating each of the Rahkshi (instead of only three of them) as the Toa Nuva will forever be a dream. Although, if the core gameplay and mechanics would have been the same, you could have probably expected a longer but still average experience. The game wasn't all that bad. It had a nice soundtrack that conveyed the atmosphere of the levels nicely and tension during battles. Some designs, in terms of aesthetic at least, were all right - Gali's level is hand down my favorite depiction of Ga-Koro. My real beefs with the game are, same as you, that playing some characters boils down to a mini-game instead of platforming (poor Pohatu and Kopaka) and the rushed storytelling. You shouldn't have expected an epic tale like the movie, but it still upsets me how rushed the ending is: the mask of light is finally mentioned when there was only a brief foreshadowing at the end of level 1, Takua turns into Takanuva then effs off two seconds later, right in front of a confused Tahu, and goes to defeat Makuta and fuse with him, and none of the Toa are here for the final scene. They basically became background characters in the movie the moment Takanuva but this is a new level of "Those characters you love don't matter in the end". Yeah, not the Bionicle gaming experience I was hoping for when I got it as a kid. Heroes: The bar is raised but not by much. The game has much more content and a longer lifespan, but to me it doesn't mean much when the game is extremely repetitive. There's really nothing that makes any of the levels stand out, nor the worlds for that matter. The campaign's experience all boils down to going into a world, beating a level with a Rahkshi at the end, beating a boss-less level, beating a level with a Titan at the end, then finally confronting the Piraka followed by Vezon. The only real things that change are the environment, the soundtrack, the color of the Rakshi, the Titan, the Piraka and the funny cutscenes. That aside, you've basically played all the game had to offer. I'm harsh but when I look back at it, that's basically what is. I was also quite disappointed it didn't go and try to tell a lore-accurate story and instead went with the Piraka goofing around while the Toa are not characters but simply armors/masks for the nameless protagonist to wield as he shoots at a bunch of enemies and characters who have no reason to be here except for fan service I guess - Roodaka, Sidorak, Nidiki, Kreka, what are you doing here?, and why are you working with Reidak, Axonn? It's all nice putting so many characters together, but I'd rather have played as the Toa as their own characters helping the Matoran resistance take down the Piraka and free the enslaved Voyatorans, with more than one character speaking to go with it. It seems you just can't get a satisfying story, if an actually existing one. Not to say it's all trash. The OP had a nice array of styles that conveyed each world's theme (the entirety of Avak's fortress is an absolute banger) and I had fun with the bonus content - I would laugh my off at the cutscenes with the Piraka on the beach. I put Heroes higher on the list than the 2003 game, but the gap isn't that large. There are things that the 2003 game did better, like capturing the spirit of Bionicle and its sense of adventure, instead of making it a bunch of funny cutscenes, but Heroes stands above by virtue of being a complete game. There's a lore more I could say, but I think that nails my main thoughts on the matter. It's a shame City of Legends was cancelled cos 2004 and 2005 were my favorite years in terms of lore and storytelling. Now can we assume it would have been a better a game if it had been greenlighted and not another run-of-the-mill plaftormer? I dunno, but for now, I know I'll be trying Legend of Mata Nui Rebuilt and always keep an eye on fan projects, if they actually go somewhere.
