"But T," you'll say. "There was never a Volume 1!" And yes, that's very true. But I figured there's been so many instances of stupid advertising that I've left the first volume on the shelf, in honor of all those campaigns that have come before.

Today's topic comes hot on the heels of breaking news today. Boston officials were put on edge this afternoon when a number of small "devices" were found around the city. Working carefully, it was discovered that these devices were not active, and quite benign in nature.

It was later discovered, much to my personal chagrin that they were intentionally left there by employees of a certain broadcast company advertising a latenight program. More shockingly, there were similar devices left in cities such as New York and Atlanta. And according to reports, they had been there for a number of days prior to their discovery.

Why am I displeased? It's because I cannot stand viral marketing. Though they have apologized and claimed to not have any harmful intent with the use of these devices, I have a gut feeling that they knew just what they were doing when they laid out this campaign. What better way these days to get a moment in the spotlight than to dig up a controversy. Considering the nature of the 24-hour news monster, it's not surprising how easily one can accomplish such a feat.

I hope that those involved get more than a slap on the wrist for this. Considering that there are usually some serious consequences for causing a commotion such as this. I didn't watch the show much before this. Odds are I probably won't go back at all now.

Well, things may have brightened up a bit around the Haven. I talked with my grandpa, who's a financial whiz (runs on that side of the family) about the problem I had over the weekend. Apparently there was more of a miscommunication between the me and the people I had purchased/sold stock through. They sent some info to me, apparently neglecting to make it clear that they weren't sending the rest.

So I had to track down a few forms (didn't know that there was such a thing as the Schedule D until now) and fill those out. Hopefully I did it all right, because it's off and in the mail. If all goes well, it may turn out to be a pretty decent swing...and the IRS could end up owing me money instead.

Well, those leaked pics made the rounds...and now I've seen a crystal clear pic of the Red Mahri, and a few fuzzy canister shots of the others. Thankfully they were nameless pics. And I have to say that the 2007 canister sets easily will rank as some of the best designs Bionicle has ever seen.

From what I can tell, every complaint I had about the Inika is fully resolved. And I may just have to break my resolution and grab a full set of Barraki along with my Mahri team. LEGO needs to be rewarded for what they've done this year.

So start saving now, and if you haven't seen them yet...perpare to be astounded when the official release arrives. Until then, I promise I won't do any of that spoiler stuff to those of you who don't want it ruined.

Trying to break the habit of hyphens in the entry name here. But otherwise, just throwing out a plug for my Epic Contest #6 entry "The Alliance". I'm excited to see how it does in this round, as I was really proud of the story.

I'm also relieved the theme this time around was epics that were already finished. I've been a bit worried about how Rebirth is turning out. I haven't had as much time to work on it as I would've liked. So I was glad to not suddenly feel the urge to chagne it to fit into the contest.

I look forward to the competition. There are a lot of great writers on the forums!

I'm a bit surprised by the reactions people have had to the spoilers regarding the 2007 Toa. I wasn't in time to read any of them, and I'm actively avoiding seeking out the pics, but at the same time I can't help but think we as a fandom should already know what's coming down the pipe.

I'll put SPOILER WARNINGS before I write anything, just in case somebody who has seen them decides to post what the truth is, but I'm encouraging people not to. So go into this discussion with plenty of warning.

Personally, I can't help but think that we're getting evolved Inika. It's a trend that LEGO's stuck to for the last two rounds of Toa. First the Nuva, then the Hordika. Why would anybody else think that the Mahri wouldn't be Jaller and co? Let's look at the facts.
The Inika's destiny is to secure the Ignika. The Ignika is being held by the Barraki. The Barraki as a species predominatly dwell underwater. The Inika currently have no ready means of surviving underwater. We've been told the Inika may be getting new Kanohi. Sounds like the formula for a mode change if you ask me. If this turns out to be true, I honestly am not upset, or shocked, or spoiled by knowing if the Inika are in fact the Toa we will be seeing in new forms this year. I like the idea. Part of what makes a story compelling is the characters. It's what made the Metru-Nui flashback one of my least favorite elements. Sure it gave us a ton of backstory to the universe, but it also left the characters we had come to know sitting around doing nothing for about two years. I honestly would loose interest if we had to say goodbye to the Inika so quickly after saying hello.
I don't know if this is the case, though judging by the reaction of those who know I can't help but slant in that direction. I understand the reason to surpress the leaked images (policy is policy when that sort of information is concerned), but why the need for such enforced secrecy regarding their identities? If they're the Inika transformed, we already know who the characters are and really shouldn't be surprised considering LEGO's track record. And if we don't know who these characters are...or they are characters who we've seen previously...it still leaves the mystery of why they were made Toa and how they're brought back into (or just plain into the fold).

So if you had it spoiled, don't worry. There's still plenty of mystery left. Or if theyr'e the Inika, you were spoiled back when the Hordika were introduced. Either way, there's still a LOT of the 2007 storyline we don't know. So focus on that.

Some mail came for me today from the IRS, apparently there were some discrepancies in my 2006 Tax Return. To make a long story short, I now owe them $620 by the end of the month.

At first I couldn't figure out what the heck had happened, but after going over some of the paperwork from last year's filing, here's what I found. The person who did my taxes neglected to take into consideration some investments I had cashed out. The paperwork was all there, including the proper W2s or whatever they're called. They just missed it when they were crunching the numbles.

Needless to say I am not in a very perky mood, and have to wait until this weekend when I'm free to go back up to my dad's place and meet with the people to make sure they realize what happened and perhaps get some help righting this situation. Because one way or another I most likely do owe the money, I'm just not happy it's come about two years after I was supposed to have payed it.

I was looking at the poster that was put up in the News the other day, and it seemed kinda funny. What was that a poster for? I mean, there wasn't anything except for a chunk of blue foot armor and what's most likely a projectile. I'm all for teasers...but that really wasn't even hinting at anything. It'd be like running a promo for a movie in which the only thing you see is the main character saying "The" over an explosion.

I find it kinda funny. I sorta expected inside to see it unfolded or something. That is, if I didn't miss something. As it is I don't know if I'm curious or just confused.

T-Hybrid is busy working his tail off this week to make up for textbook costs. He has once again turned to his guest writer to fill in.

First things first, you may notice a few changes in the appearance. Mostly Kouki's new button and my own upgrade. Things are changing at the Haven and us two are sure signs of it. After about a month of toying around with various elements, T's been able to come up with a way to give us both upgrades to our Ultimate stage so that we better fit the theme around here.

Kouki's now paired with BioDarkdramon, which is pretty awesome looking. But nobody got it better than me. Notice the flaming swords? How about the shiny new wings? Yep, I'm ViceGreymon Code Blue and I'm lovin' it! It was fun having a revolver strapped to my arm for the last half a year or so, but now I actually have a hand over there. And that makes things like typing so much easier!

It's also made guarding the place a breeze. Nobody really wants to challenge a oversize lizard with blue-flames where his wings should be. It was draining for T to actually get the work done, but I think his efforts payed off. The place actually looks good with all us Ultimate's running around.

Not much else to report, except that the Boss has his financial affairs all in order this month. Much faster than he usually does. Book charges were a bit rough. He said something like $200 for three classes. But that's the breaks for his major. The upside is its the last time he'll ever have to buy books. Ever.

Well, I'm off to get back to my post. Gotta show off the new guns to the ladies. Adios!

I was looking at the shadowy figures on the back of Nocturn's box today, the ones that people have thought to be this year's Toa. Pardon me if I'm a bit behind, but has anybody else noticed they look surprisingly like some images we saw late last year that people thought were prototype Inika?

I'm talking about pics such as this:
Though there are others which are actually live pics of sets (not book covers or other things such as that). Considering we saw the Barraki prototypes back during late 05 early 06 (remember those grey figures everybody was talking about?) isn't it possible that we've already seen these guys? After all, this guy has those breathing tubes, similar to one of the shadowed out figures.

Unfortunately the search function doesn't work, so I can't really track these images down as quickly as I would like. But if anybody else knows what I'm talking about maybe you could lend me a hand. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills right now.

Over Christmas Break, Nintendo made five classic games available for the Wii's Virtual Console. One of those was the legendary Super Mario Bros for the NES. I had some extra points left over from my purchase of Mario 64, so I decided to pick up SMB for the reasonable price of $5.

The last time I played this was probably back in 96 or so, shortly before my family made the uneducated decision to sell our NES. Whatever the case, I never beat it. Not really for any lack of trying, but because I was just uneducated.

This was before the days of the internet, before I could click a few links and learn a few tricks here and there. So I was blissfully, or "frustratingly" if you actually watched me play, unaware of the ability to Continue a game by pressing A + Start on the title screen. So when I learned of this yesterday suddenly the game became considerably less impossible. I uttered a few curses here and there in the course of a few of the trickier jumps, and I managed to squeak through that a-maze-ing 8-4 with a very slim about of time left. But I did it. I finally beat the original Mario. 20 years after its original release.

It was really a triumph of the spirit though, and I wish I hadn't been alone in the house when it happened. Mostly because I doubted the dog would understand why his master was jumping up and down with glee. And then I saw this:

Why do the fates torture me so?

That's the theme for 2007, at least for me. With my final semester of coursework beginning in a few weeks, this year marks the beginning of the rest of my life (quite officially this time). I've found myself finally working more in the field I've been learning about thanks to landing a posistion at a local software consulting firm. And just last week I put into motion events which will start me off in the work force.

Remember my entry regarding my new suit? Well, since then the outfit has done it's work. I was offered, and accepted, a posistion with Thomson West out of Eagan. It's a combination software/printing company that focuses on legal material. I'm so excited that it took almost everything I had to not blurt it out until I surprised my family on Christmas with the news.

So that's essentially put me on course for this year, which will find me looking for a longterm place of residence as well as new transportation and wardrobe. To make it simple, Christmas shopping for me this year will be incredibly easy. My stomach's a bit knotted up in a mixture of excitement and nervousness, as I'll be making the transistion to being completely on my own as far as supporting myself. But that won't stop me from fulfilling one of my New Year's Resolutions, which is to finish Rebirth before I graduate in May.

So to all the readers who stop by the Haven now and then, Happy New Year! May you too find success and good fortune in 2007!

I had gone out shopping with the plans of picking up Barakki (which spelling is it?). But when I was unable to find either Carapar or Mantax I "settled" for the next best thing and picked up Nocturn. I have to say that as an introduction to the new baddies, Nocturn is pretty impressive. Their design is fairly original, including some nice use of spikes and color. He definately looks like an aquatic fiend, and with his quadruple armaments he's pretty fierce. Haven't had a chance to make it glow in the dark yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

Looking back on the years and all different villian sets, it's easy to say that the Barraki are the best canister villians LEGO has ever come up with. When I get to a point where I can barely decide who I want because each one offers something different, that's a good problem. Villians up until this point have always been clone sets...the Barrakki set a nice precedent.

One downside of Nocturn would be the reuse of some peices (I think they're mostly Inika stuff). The new pieces (armor, head, spines) look really cool, and from what I've seen of the Barrakki makes me think that this is a problem exclusive to him. The overall set is quite poseable, and does really fit the theme of "Warlord" that LEGO was going for.

I had been in a few Wal-Mart stores over the last few weeks and hadn't seen any on shelves before today. But today there was a whole mess of them. I've seen prices for Nocturn climb as high as $30. He's not worth that. Give it time and they'll be more readily available. I don't know the whole story with this set, but I still see a few store exclusives floating around at various other stores from time to time.
  13. T-Hybrid
I picked up three Piraka (mostly because I wanted the Irnakk set). I wasn't too pleased. The Barakki though appear to be the second coming of the Rahkshi (w/ more uniqueness)...and I'm kinda interested. I went to a different Target today and they had the blue and red ones (I'll learn their names someday). A trip to a nearby TRU presented me with the black, white, and "brown" ones (Mantax, Pridak, Kalmah?)

I'm started to get very interested in picking up a few of these (if not eventually all of them). Anybody have suggestions as to where to start? I read the Pridak review and liked what I saw, but then spotted the brown guy in the background and was interested moreso with him.

I've got to pick up a few spare Inika in the meantime, but I can put that off until they start to go down in price (with the Barakki out that may come sooner than I thought). But before I put any more pieces of this blog between parenthesis (or start using commas) I'll open the floor to suggestions and step away from the keyboard.
  14. T-Hybrid
I'm up late...or early depending on your view. Mostly because I'm pumped for the holidays. My mom and sister are flying in for a few weeks, and I'll be making two trips to my grandparents place (which means two X-Mas dinners, not too shabby when your a broke college kid).

A Christmas Story has started it's 24-hour loop on TNT, and my dog is sitting patiently waiting for me to go to bed. But there's a gift for me across the room and I have a good feeling that I know what it is. I've also put up my X-Mas gift to all of you guys in a new chapter for Rebirth. Hopefully there will be more to follow.

Also, I've got some great news that I'm going to surprise my mom with. If you go back to some earlier blogs you may have some idea as to what it is. I can't wait to tell them, as I've been putting a lot of work into it for the last few months.

I probably won't be around today to add anything new to the Fic or to my site (actually that'll probably have to wait until after I get back to my home PC), but I'll be sure to report back with the excitement of the day (as well as the haul) as soon as I can.

So everybody out there, have a great day...regardless of what you celebrate! Take some time to see the family, eat a good meal, and spread the happiness that tends to float around this time of year.
  15. T-Hybrid
Made an emergency trip into Target today in a futile attempt to complete my Christmas shopping. After giving up on finding that one last gift, I decided to take a side trip and check out whatever toys hadn't been completely ravaged by fellow shoppers.

To my surprise, sitting on the shelf beside the hordese of Inika and few remaining Piraka were two Barakki (the red one...Mantak?) I have to say I was tempted to grab him, but there was no price tag and I've been a bit short on cash recently with bills and other apartment expenses. Not to mention I really wasn't there to buy anything for myself. So I let the opportunity pass in hopes of finding them more readily next year.

But I have to say I was impressed with what I saw, having finally seen one in person. The box is bizarre (for lack of anything better to say). It's titled at an odd angle which will make stoarge a pain, but I will admit it's the most unique packaging I've seen in something like that for a while.

Unfortunately there wasn't a display for the Barakki yet, so I didn't get a chance to actually see one assembled. But I like what I've seen. The pics on the one's box made them appear to be more unique than previous "canister" sets (does that word even work anymore?). I can't decided if I want the Barakki, or if I should save my money for when we get a look at the '07 Toa.

Though I didn't really say much in regards to their first bout. Tonight's game was less exciting and more frustrating. Even with the dramatic finish. As a Vikings fan, I have to question the intelligence of a coach who stops the clock with 40 seconds left in the first half when the OTHER team is rushing to kick a field goal. Unfortunately, that was the difference.

Not that the offense was really doing itself any favors tonight either. Tavaris Jackson doesn't look too bad, and the defense really tried its best to keep this game close (holding any team to three field goals over an entire game isn't bad). Those are some pluses I guess one can take into next season.
  17. T-Hybrid
I was reminded today that I had a website, and I feel bad. RiF's been my baby for the past four years, and I've done nothing all semester...heck, maybe as far back as June/July. I've got a LOT of down time, just finished up the main game in Portrait of Ruin and am at a point where I need to spend some time leveling up before I can ice off XII. I picked up some Wii points and got Mario 64, but that's for over break when I have no wireless connection for Mario Kart and Tetris.

So in the meantime, I'm going to try and kick start RiF again. Got some more comics up and hopefully officially end Year 4. In a way, it'll be nice to get reaquianted with some old friends. Though I'm leaving school, and the site will most likely have to come down when I'm no longer allowed to borrow their webspace.

What happens then? If enough people are interested, I could try hosting comics on Maj and using the blog as a means of sharing them. But I'll have to work on that when the time comes. Gage, Mav...I'm back!

All of my finals fell on Wednesday, and were all essay format. Thankfully the Media Ethics paper was assigned prior to finals week, so we only needed to turn the paper by deadline in order to get credit for the appearance. In the meantime, I'm working on finishing up my internship with a "local" software consulting firm. I'm also in the midst of a heated job hunt, which has seen me dressed up in a suit and tie more times than I'll ever care to be again. But let me tell you, as awkward as it feels to get all dressed up like that...there's a certain confidence that comes when you see yourself in the mirror. Vanity? I wouldn't go that far.

I'm looking ahead to my final semester of my undergraduate career, and I couldn't be more excited. I feel like the whole world is opening up to me, and I can't wait to see where it leads me next. But in the meantime, while I have some down time between work and classes...I've had a chance to reaquianted with some old friends. To summarize what I've been researching:

    The following games are cool:
    Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
    Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (DS)
    Starfox Command (DS)
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii/GC)

The following games will be cool:
    Yoshi's Island DS (DS)
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS)
    Kirby: Squeak Squad (DS)
    Pokemon: Diamond Version (DS)
    Okami (PS2)
    Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)
    Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii)

The following games will hopefully come out:
    Super Paper Mario (Wii?)

By now, most of you I would guess have heard reviews about the newest Bond film. Casino Royale supposedly marks a new direction for the franchise, promising a grittier more down to earth Bond than we've been used to seeing (mostly referring to the Brosnan Era). So it was no surprise when the movie started to draw notice from viewers for its more violent and rough edge.

Along with reviews, a common warning came out. Parents, this isn't a film for the whole family. And after seeing it for myself, I am in total agreement. Bond is much more agressive than we've become used to seeing (going back even as far as Connery's portrayal). In the first scene alone, Bond drowns a man in a bathroom sink after a pretty intense hand-to-hand encounter.

Imagine my disgust when I heard the following from the seat ahead of me: "Daddy, did that man just drown?"

Here, sitting right in front of me, was a family of five. Mom and dad had apparently decided to take their three children to Casino Royale. Unfortunately, the eldest child couldn't have been much more than 10. I couldn't believe it. The reviews, reports, and even word-of-mouth out of the movie all warned against such actions. And yet, what do we have? Three kids that are way too young being taken to a movie where dad spends half the time trying to ensure that the kids realize what they're seeing isn't real.

This bothers me not only as a human being, but as a gamer. Because I am almost certain that these are the kinds of parents that go out and buy their kids games like Bloodrayne and Grand Theft Auto, completely oblivious to the kinds of material their exposing their children too.

There's a time and a place to introduce content such as this to children, or at least prepare them to encounter such material. Age 10 and younger is not this time. Casino Royale isn't the kind of Bond movie you grew up on. And, in general, please heed warnings regarding the content of films, tv, music, and games.

Sorry to rant, but sitting in that movie theater and watching a dad fumble through some convoluted explanation as to why the guy on screen isn't moving anymore just irked me more than the issues HGM was discussing earlier.

T-Hybrid has found himself unable to play Twilight Princess. While he battles Best Buy customer service, his guest writer has stepped up to fill in.

Wowza! I gotta say that today would not be a good day to mess with T-Boss. Last night at around midnight he was set up to enter the 6th dungeon and beat the game by the end of the week. But for whatever reason, his game froze and now he's unable to do anything in the way of advancing the storyline.

I have to tell you, if there's one thing that gets on T's bad side in a hurry it's poor customer service. I'm a Perfect level Digimon with a revolver for an arm, and even I don't wanna be anywhere near him today. Supposedly Best Buy isn't gonna exchange his game. Why? I dunno. He's muttering something about a service plan that he didn't buy. Who'd a thunk that only a week into owning a Wii he'd run into a problem such as this?

But lookin back at his last few blogs, I can tell that he's hammered you poor guys with all kinds of Wii talk. So instead, let's talk something cool. Let's talk patio! It's open, it's winter, but it's alright. I've officially paid off my debt for the fight with Santiramon, and now I'm able to hang out with the regulars taking in pixie stixs like they were going out of style. MachGaogamon hasn't shown up in a long while, and I dunno if that's a good or bad thing. I'm just waiting until he pops up with some boss of his own and decides he wants to move in on our newly expanded turf.

I'll also take the time to voice appreciation for T's victory in the Short Story contest. I saw him crack a smile when I told him, and for a moment he was relieved of some of the pressure. Then the guy on the other line said something stupid, and he was back to yelling about service plans and paying to exchange a game.

That's all for me today. I'll throw in a plug for Digimon Savers and be on my way now. Seeya!
  22. T-Hybrid
My friends and I went to Walmart to pick up grocieries yesterday. With the Wii only a few days from release, I made a stop in electronics to get some information regarding how the store would handle those who wish to line-up on launch day.

Thankfully, the guy in electronics said they'd have no problem with it...regardless of when you decided to get in line. He made his point more clear by gestering towards layaway, where three people were already camped out for the Playstation 3. Two guys sat on lawn chairs, while the third (who I couldn't tell if he was first or third) was walking in a circle juggling some balls he had brought with.

Now, I consider myself a pretty diehard gamer...but this to me just sounds crazy. I suppose news of PS3's possibly being in short supply at launch may have contributed in part. But now I am concerned for my own chances of landing a Wii on the 19th. My group of friends on campus will be taking a trip to the Mall of America on Saturday, a good hour from the apartment. We'll most likely make it back before too late in the evening, but if people get in line as early as they did for the PS3 those 20 Wiis that Walmarts ad promised may quickly fade away.

Fates appear to be conspiring right now. Whether it's against me or with me I've yet to decide. But all I know is that I can't be as dedicated as those three noble souls who got to Walmart sometime yesterday morning. Of course, how funny would it be if come Thursday night they're still the only people in line until about 2-3 hours before launch?
  23. T-Hybrid
My friend and I had some errands to run this afternoon, one of which was stopping at Gamestop. Upon arriving, we were pleasantly surprised to see a playable Wii demo unit. The only game hooked up was ExciteTruck, but it was still fun. The controller's surprisingly small, but fit comfortably in my hand even when turned on its side. The controllers felt a bit loose, but that could've just been me getting used to it.

It was fun having an excuse to throw my whole body into the steering this time, as usually gamers get mocked for getting so involved. Overall, Nintendo's got a good thing here...I hope that they're able to succeed with this endeavor.

Oh, and go to Gamestop to try it yourself. You'll need a driver's license and credit card in order to "check out" the Wii Remote, as they're not able to attach it like a normal controller. So make sure if you're not able to provide these that you get your parents to come along.

Well, not yet anyway. I've got feelers out as to what's going on the Saturday before the Wii comes out (Nov. 18th). Fates almost conspired, giving me a job interview on the 17th. But since I'm not interested in the PS3, it won't be a problem.

Gamestop will supposedly be offering a bundle soon that includes a Wii, extra controller, six games and a bunch of stuff I don't want all for "under $699." Go ahead and grab this one up, I'm really not interested in spending that much quite yet.

My best bet now is to pitch a tent outside one of the local department stores and hope for the best. If what I've been hearing is accurate, most stores are getting between 8-10 systems on launch day. So I'll have to scout whichever line is the shortest and take my chances with it. All I can say is thank the stars its a weekend launch, otherwise I'd be missing a bit of work/school to do this.

But hey, it's a new thing for me...gotta try everything once right?

I just picked up the 8th Season of the Simpsons on DVD this weekend, and was suddenly reminded that it contained what I believe to be one of the best episodes in the history of the show. I'm speaking of "You Only Move Twice" featuring the greatest one-off character ever, Hank Scorpio.

As I watched the episode, I was almost able to quote along with it verbatim. It was amazing, it's been nearly 10 years since the episode aired, and here I am able to remember so much about it. Right down to the little details (the woman snapping the general's neck, Scoprio pulling sugar out of his pockets). There's even the not so memorable yet still funny quotes: "In fact, I didn't even give you my coat!"

It was an episode I hadn't seen in a long time, and while watching it I was reminded of how the Simpsons used to be. Though Scorpio's Bond-esque villiany is hilarious, it serves only as the B-story to an otherwise humorous plot on it's own. The way that Homer is copmletely oblivious to what's going on is almost a testament to how bizarre the world the Simpsons live in can be. And of course, the joke builds until what is literally an explosive finale.

There are other classics that I have watched as I've collected the DVD releases, but for some reason...."You Only Move Twice" is the gem in this massive collection.

    Some of my other favorites:
"Homer's Enemy" (the Frank Grimes one)
"Two Bad Neighbors" (the George Bush one)

Besides that, Season 8 has other classics such as "Hurricane Neddy" which features a memorable Flanders breakdown. ("And if you really bug me, I'll run you over with my car.") But at this point, I'm rambling. So now with this written, it's back to the DVDs. There's more treasures to be found.
