  1. This set is actually one of the ones I'm looking at getting. There are no main characters among the figs, meaning I wouldn't get yet another duplicate Emmet, but at the same time the figs there are filled with personality, unlike, say, the figs from the Trash Chomper, which while technically new still feel like old hat. The lack of alternate models really only inspires me to make my own, and I think the saloon biplane and flying kebab stand are some of the most vibrant of the "transformed vehicle" sets. The biplane has a piano in the back! How cool is that?

Similar feelings here - upon first inspection this was one of the sets I was thinking of getting. It seemed like a lot of fun and had a good variety of styles. :)

  2. No way I'm going to be able to resist buying this

    *Simpsons geekmode kicks in.*

The interior isn't as good a likeness as I would have hoped. Its missing several rooms: the dining room, the second sitting room with a fireplace, the basement (Guess I didn't expect them to have that). Also the famous opening sequence where Homer runs through the door in the back of the Garage wouldn't work. No door.

I guess the exterior looks are more important, and they're done pretty well. Its missing the exterior basement doors, and I would've liked to see the treehouse with it.

I'm not quite sure who this is directed at. It strikes me as a fun toy for children who watch the simpsons, but with its high price tag, that doesn't seem right.

Doesn't the design of the house change over time anyway? In the first seasons anyway I'm pretty sure I've seen rooms next to each other become separated and what not. I'm guessing once the series gained popularity they came up with a more consistent design to appease fans? :P

  3. Sorry if this has been brought up elsewhere (didn't see any news story on this?) but what do we know about the Lego Simpsons set images that have surfaced recently? How legitimate are they? If so is anyone else's childhood merchandising dream coming true? :P I must admit the criticisms of the minifigures looking a bit awkward is justified but as I've heard explained before that always tends to happen when translating the Simpsons' characters into 3D. Either way I'm excited. :)

  4. I haven't read the topic in it's entirety but a quick thought - the way I see it there's two main kind of paths that could be taken to this issue. The first is to focus on retaining the core userbase (Bionicle fans) and have it as a place for the community to discuss the current happenings of LEGO, fan arts (storys, creatons, software projects etc.. ) and to discuss the old days. This would lead to a slow decline in the userbase from where it is - but this is a known site so I'm sure new people would show up here and there and possibly the site could eventually develop a new community with a stronge interest in the new Lego lines naturally.

Altnernatively, the site could actively branch out to attract those who wish only to discuss the new lines. On one hand this could be good as since this is already an established website and community it would seem like a good place for discussion to newcomers. However, due to the Bionicle herigate, that could actually "scare off" some newcomers who don't know what Bionicle is and may feel out of place or intimidated by the older parts of the community. As a result they may prefer to discuss the newer lines on a site specific to those newer lines. Not an issue that would reaslitically cause any problems I don't think but forcing such an expansion that way could be difficult to some extent since this is still a Bionicle themed site. Broadening the foundation of the site to be more general and long term could work and just keeping the core Bionicle things (Hapori Tohu as the mascot/logo etc...) and then have the actual content forums less Bionicle related and more equally spread across the newer franchises encouraging new discussion in new areas for those lines. For example on inspection I don't see any HF specfic creative outlet forums - perhaps by introducing some creative HF (or other Lego line) subforums or contests, people would naturally fill that void. I mean an empty forum or contest wouldn't stay empty for long people would come in and add something whether they're new fans who've stumbled across it or old fans willing to have a play around and with that discussion and community would expand and evolve I believe. That's just one specific example, but I think that idea in general could perhaps work.

Just random second last day of year musings. :P

  5. I think a lot of the specialness of Bionicle for us is due to nostalgia goggles - but that being said it was still wildly successful and long running. I haven't been following the storylines of HF or Ninjango particuarly closely (outside of playing with the sets and watching the TV sets with my little brother :P ) but I have a feeling TLC took the attributes they thought made Bionicle successul and tried to incorporate them into their future projects. Attributes such as an extensive lore and a well built world, unique and distinct characters, heavily stylised visual themes and spreading the franchise across many forms of media. I think Bionicle recieved a lot of its "passion" from them due to the fact it was successful and they decided to keep running with it. In the same way RoboRiders and Slizers led to Bionicle, Bionicle has led to these current lines. Difference is - we now have multiple lines with extensivesly made charcaters, storys and media extras so perhaps rather than just seeing the success of one franchise and running with it - they've decided to try different versions of what made Bionicle successul. Such a decision would probably broaden their market, increase their chances of success and allow for my experimentation as to what is successful and what is not.

I don't think TLC will want to put all their eggs in one basket though and have only one such franchise like we moreorless (*with few exceptions) during the Bionicle era - rather they're spreading their efforts in that department across these multiple projects for the aforementioned reasons. Personally I feel like Chima is my favourite of these new lines and I hope they keep the momentum going with it because it has a lot of potential. :)

  6. There may be some truth in it - but I suspect the inception of the idea behind each of those lines happened separately by different people at different times and were probably the result of market research. The research probably indicated a follow up to the visual style of Bionicle (HF) would be a smart idea (may not even be researched based this part) but that a more accesible storyline was needed to avoid what perhaps may have been seen at the time as a downfall of Bionicle. Later on or even simultanetously Ninjango could have been developed from separate but similar research indicating a more extensive, character and story based media franchise would suit the market. Obviously that's just my guess but I don't think they would have been created purely to complement each other (though obviously they would have been aware of their other projects and avoided overlap so that's where the compltementry nature of the themes comes from) - I think it's more likely desirable franchise attributes were researched and then lines would have been created around those attrubutes. All speculation really since we don't work there. :P

  7. For the sets themselves, I would probably say either 2001 (I loved the large Rahi sets) - though there were other highlight years such as 2005 when they introduced the playsets. For the story and personally overall I would say 2004 (and indreictly 2003), the huge shift from Mata Nui to a new location, new characters and lore was very exciting and the story and sets of 2003 led into that perfectly. The two movies certainly helped with the hype and there were some really cool characters made into sets throughout those times (Takanuva, Makuta, and the Dark Hunters). The final year was quite good too with all the nostalgia callbacks and what not though I was unfortunately not able to complete my collection of the sets - still looking to do that. :P

  8. Been a fan of Bionicle since the beginning and was a fan of similar previous lines such as Slizers and Roboriders etc... Discovered BZPower through thr Lego.com message boards funnily enough and joined here about eight years ago now I think to ask Greg questions. :P Learnt a lot on this site, from computer and writing skils, to gaining interests in science and physics. I also felt very attatched to much of the community which was very welcoming and whatnot and even met a few members in real life at various points. A while ago I had to move away from the site though due to real life and all as well as gaining other interests in place of Bionicle which had ended. Now I'm just about to start university next week (studying physics and maths and stuff though don't know what to do entirely) and still come online here and there to see what's new. :)

  9. Credentials... well, I've been watching the Science Channel and Discovery Channel since I was younger than ten. Does that count? :P That and I've read through a basic college-level physics textbook (though as I said in my earlier post in this topic, I didn't take to the math part).I doubt Earth's rotation had anything to do with the neutrino arriving sooner. I'm assuming the neutrino experiment was done in a straight line on or near the Earth's surface; if I'm wrong on that matter, please correct me.The Earth rotates at a near-constant speed, correct? That means everything on the Earth is rotating with it. If you're in an enclosed, windowless train room, and the train was moving at a constant speed of, say, fifty miles per hour, if you dropped a ball, it would fall straight down because it's moving with the rest of the train. If the train were decelerating and you dropped the ball, the ball would move to the front of the train (though of course you can't know if the train is decelerating or accelerating, as both manners of acceleration provide equal effects). The same thing happens with the Earth: We can't feel it moving. So why should neutrinos be exempt from such an effect? If I'm wrong about the experiment, I'd like some clarification.

I kinda just skimmed over this conversation so sorry if I'm saying something irrelevant or whatnot, but the argument I saw about the Earth's rotation affecting the experiment results was something to do with sattelites used in measuring something or other in the experiment? So the difference in measurement could have come from the different relativistic speeds of the sattellite, Earth and the nuetrinos? I didn't read much of the article either though so whatever. :P
  10. I had a Duplo jigsaw set given to me as like a birth present apparently? :PIf that doesn't count I think it'd a red race car... Can't remember much about it though except I insisted the instriction were wrong and that the streering wheel should face the front where people could see it.
