Ya know, we talk an awful lot about what makes an RPG really successful. Interest, GM involvement, and Player interaction spring to mind. But what you don't hear about often is Game Structure.

You see, some games are just inherently built in a manner which is conducive to a large amount of posts. Games like Outbreak and BZProvince were built on quickly posting many small sequences, because their primary focus was in the heat of the battle. Obviously, the story carried weight too, and many large posts within each one, but the games were built upon combat. It made them frantic and fast.

Games like Reality and the BZPRPG are pushed to the top for a different reason. They aren't necessarily made of small posts, but the sheer amount of players in each one provide an increasing amount of interaction. The sandbox mechanics and general freedom give players a large reason to post. These games aren't necessarily frantic even if they are speedy.

The third group is made of games like Oblivion's Embrace and A City Divided. These games are structured (from what I understand) largely around delivering a compelling story, with combat taking a back seat. These games don't always garner large followings or massive amounts of rapid fire posts, but instead focus on providing an amazing, character building, experience.

So, in my opinion, judging games based on how many pages they drudged up is rather irrelevant. Look at CJ's games. They were all amazingly well put together and well executed but they just didn't garner much of a following.

I guess the three structure types is sort of like the difference between Uncharted, World of Warcraft, and Final Fantasy. All three are great and fun, just different and differently paced. You're obviously going to get the blockbuster Marios, but every year you'll also hear of an Okami.

Okay, so my mom took a bad fall and is barely conscious at all. I won't be able to be online at all tonight, sorry guys.

Hahli Husky- If you read this, I know I promised I would have that certain thing done by tonight, but regrettably I cannot.

Kiotu- Proceed with the Skakdi Insurgents, and I'll have my character for them done by tomorrow.

    Everyone- Do something crazy!

EF's Quick and Simple Guide to God Modding

Step 1: Create a character with the powers of all the Hydruka combined into one being of pure awesomeness and ultimate ownage.

Step 2: Get this character approved through a combination of cookies and skittles.

Step 3: Proceed to wreak havoc upon the world as you spill buckets upon buckets of NPC blood.

Step 4: Save the day by rescuing the damsel in distress. (There always is one)

Step 5: Blow up the world at the game's epic climax and become a Great Hydruka Spirit that everyone lives inside.

    Step 6: ???

    Step 7: Profit.

So, home from school today with an asthma attack. My voice is currently only as good as my pen. Here's a short preview of what's to come in History According to Dume. Note, if you don't want to be spoiled as to a major Villainous plot element, do not proceed.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « The last will and testament of Turaga Dume and SILENT TWO.

To whom it may concern and to all that I have wronged,

Let it be known that I, Turaga Dume of Metru-Nui, am the cause of all your troubles. Were it not for my own selfish stupidity, you would never have experienced what you are now forced to suffer through. I only pray that the Great Beings will forgive me of my wrongs and somehow aid you in reclaiming all that you have lost. Heed my words.

The words of my last and final confession.Story
    ---
Long ago, there was an island far to the south, on what some call the edge of the universe. Its inhabitants were similar to Vortixx, except rather diminutive in size. They traveled the world as nomads, trading goods for a living. But these beings possessed great power and knowledge that the rest of society had only begun to discover.

I first met and befriended them at a bazaar on the island of Xia. They offered to take me back and show me their home island. I, being but a reckless and foolish Toa, accepted the invitation and sailed back with them. I learned many things during my stay on their home island, but none so impressionable as one.

By combining their mental faculties into one, these beings were able to transcend mortality and become Great Spirits like Mata-Nui himself. Upon witnessing this phenomena, I fled from their midst to report what I had seen to Mata-Nui. His wrath was terrible, for he did not wish for any to rival his power. In utmost anger, he swooped down upon these beings and slaughtered them all. I know not if any survived. All I know is that I can see their faces when I close my eyes. Faces horrified, asking me constantly, 'why have you done this to us?'. I cannot escape their screams, and their ghostly images dog my every step.

In committing this atrocity, Mata-Nui lost his light, the source of his benevolence and right to rule. But he was not the only one who lost something that day. I found my mind fractured, and ever since then I have had to deal with five distinct personalities, each with unique abilities. There was myself, and four other personae that I called the Silent Ones.

The most vengeful of these was Silent Two, a being born of pure malevolence and selfishness. He was the mastermind behind all my most brilliant schemes. It was he who decided to engineer the Toa-Dark Hunter War that plunged the world into chaos. It was he who divulged my most precious secrets to the Six. It was he who planned to fake my death.

And it is he who holds a dagger to my heart as I pen these words.

One by one, Silent Two has mentally murdered my other personae, and he time he did so I have slipped further into the dark abyss of despair. He plans to dispose of me as well, so it is of utmost importance that I tell my story before he kills us both. Even now I can feel my mind fading as he tightens his choke hold on my sanity...
...the world has no need for your bedtime tales, Turaga. Long have you suppressed me, and soon will I obtain my revenge. Just come a little closer. The knife is your friend...
But no! I will hold strong until the last moment, for this story must survive.Factions
    ---
The sheer amount of beings I have wronged is beyond counting. In causing the slaughter of an entire species, I opened a vulnerability in Mata-Nui's unshakable armor. His right to rule had been forfeited and that made him weak.

Silent Two forced me to give the Six and their leader, Toa Helryx, all the information on transcendence that I possessed. The Six then dethroned Mata-Nui, capturing him and forcing him to work for them under the pen-name Mr. Unknown. With the Great Spirit under their control, they began to experiment. Now they are at the brink of becoming gods themselves. They merely lack Mata-Nui's light, an ingredient for success that has eluded them. One cannot decide to join the Six. You are invited if there is an opening. And once you are in, there is no way out. After Helryx was allegedly assassinated by the Brotherhood of Makuta, Cloud has become the leader of the organization.
...but deep down inside, you wanted me to give them the knowledge. You wanted the power and glory that they offered. Do not deny it...
No! It's not true... It can't be true! I want nothing more than the safety of my people, don't I?

In the wake of winning the Toa-Dark Hunter war, and forcing the remaining Toa and I out of the city, the Shadowed One ruled from Metru-Nui. But the Six soon forced him out and set an impostor in his place, creating the Guild of Villains as a way to find the strongest beings for use in their experiments. It was composed of the Dark Hunters, a mercenary group and the common soldier, and the Dusk Patrol, an elite squadron of law enforcers. With these microfactions united under one banner, the Six massacred countless beings. Oh, how I could have saved them, but I was too cowardly to lift a finger. Now the Guild is under the command of Sir Theron, a Dusk Patrol member who has inadvertently won the loyalty of his followers. My heart goes out to him. Never before in our history will one being be forced to make such monumental decisions.
...and the Vahki Hordes? Once again you gloss over the nastier portions of your past. Was it not you who reprogrammed them to overrun Metru-Nui and slaughter innocents? Did you not proclaim that it was all for the greater good? You deserved to have died that day...
I deserved to have died, yes I know. But destiny has allowed me to live and so I must do what I can to rectify the wrong.
...there is no retribution for the things you have done...
If so, then I'll soon join you in the fiery pits of Karzahni!
...wonderful! We could be neighbors! How fun...
He's getting stronger... Soon I may no longer be in control. But no matter how wretched the state of my existence is, I cannot help but have pity upon the Brotherhood of Makuta. Once a majestic and powerful organization, they have been completely brought to their knees. They are hated on all sides for both real, and possibly false, misdeeds (such as the assassination of Helryx). Their situation is not unlike my own. Rumors tell of a secret Brotherhood plot of monumental importance, but I have no idea what that could possibly be.
...I know, but I'm not telling. Hehe, my lips are zipped...
Perhaps the beings I have harmed the most belong to the League of Heroes. When I refused to let the Shadowed One build a base on Metru-Nui, it was they who came to my aid to fight against the Dark Hunters. This conflict became known as the Toa-Dark Hunter war. We lost and were forced into the southern parts of the universe. But still, they followed my every command. The Toa Union were my best friends and most trusted advisors, a beacon of hope for me in a world of darkness. But the bravest soldiers belonged to the Kanohi Underground a group of Matoran who risk their lives daily to bring us supplies and intel, and to stealthily attack strategic locations. The honorable Toa Tavok has taken charge of the League in my absence. If you ever read this, my friend, know that I was not always right. Try to lead them differently than I have.

The Order of Mata-Nui continues to aid the League, though how many of them can be trusted, I know not. With Helryx out of the picture, Ancient stepped up to the top spot. His story is that he was an Order spy into the Dark Hunters. The other Order members seem to believe him, but I would exercise extreme caution in dealing with him.

I guess it's that time of year again. The next RPGC begins in about three weeks, so it's time for me to start putting my ideas up for examination and review by the general populous. This game is the sequel to Villainous. You'll find no minor update here. The entire game is being completely overhauled, while still managing to retain around the same length.

Some things I need your input on:
Would you like to keep the current faction creation system or go with a larger scale, more BZPRPG esque, version?
No matter what faction system you choose, would you like there to be a topic where all the created factions are archived? (Similar to a profiles topic, but for factions instead)
Would you mind if the game focused more on the uncharted, or less visited, areas of the universe?
What is your opinion on the storyline so far and how do you think it can be improved?
  6. ExoFat
I was seized upon by a sudden random urge to condense the current RPGC history into a single concise list. Well, here's that list.

Many of you may have noticed my increasing inactivity. There is a reason for this. My situation at home is not improving. In fact, it has become increasingly straining to the breaking point. I'm seriously considering therapy in order to help me with my issues. You see, once I've had to deal with the stresses of the day, I find it really hard to have to log on and satisfy the demands of the online community as well. Sometimes it becomes too much and I just have to remove myself from both situations for extended periods of time.

One of the standards I live by is that I never make a promise that I know I am unable to keep. Currently, and likely for a long time into the future, I feel like I cannot fulfill my duties as a COTRPG Judge up to their fullest. It is in this light that I must now resign from this post. I hope that my successor can do a better job of staying active and involved than I have.

As to Villainous and Imagine, rest assured that I have great things planned for them and I have not deserted these games and their players by the wayside. Expect to see a dramatic activity increase within the next twenty four hours, one that I will try my best to sustain. Don't worry, crazy things are coming your way.

The Fat is back, only a little slimmer this time.

A few days ago, Rockhound and I were talking. He told me that Necro and he were having a battle of wits. I, in my stupidity, decided it would be funny to tell Necro about Rock's strategies. It got way out of hand, ending up with twisted words and broken trust. I was away for a few days, going rock climbing with my scout troop. I came back to my normal, trouble filled, life to find out that Rock had sent me several offline messages. I also got a PM from Alex, saying that Rock was thinking of leaving BZPower.

I'm writing this apology for everyone to read. Rock, I know I broke your trust. Necro, I know I broke your trust too. What happened wasn't meant to get out of hand. I'm not going to defend what I did; it was wrong. All that I possibly can do is give you this apology and ask for a second chance. You don't have to accept it, and you certainly don't need to trust me again. But I won't feel right unless I apologize, even if it's completely in vain.

Rock, Necro, I'm sorry and it will never happen again. Please, can we put this behind us and be friends once more?

    I hope you read this,
    Exo.

You know, you guys are capable of doing things in my absence. I'm not the be all end all of my RPGs. The game is nothing, absolutely nothing, without the players. So buck up, and at least start acting like the most important and influential part of the game.

So, I walked into the mall to buy myself a fancy new DSi and guess what happens? Right as I walk in, the music changes to Never Gonna Give You Up. That's right. They Rickrolled an entire shopping center! The worst part is that my little brother has the song stuck in his head. >_< I can't walk down the hall without getting Rickrolled.

So, I was sifting through all my old files and I came across this one. Some of you will probably remember it because it was an awesome RPG. But reading over it, I can't help but think that I have become way too critical of games these days, as if there was a set manner in which games are supposed to be crafted and played out. A bunch of things in this game would be absolutely ripped apart by myself and the current lineup of judges. Perhaps I need to rethink judging philosophy.

Just for kicks I put it up here. Yes, it's the original format, BBC and spelling errors and all.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «A scientist bent carefully over his work. The blue glow of the computer screen illuminated his haggard face. Absorbed in his study, he did not see the black clad figure sneak up behind him. There was a bang and the smell of smoke and blood filled the air.

No, this isn’t some horror game like Killer 7 or No More Heroes. This is a Pokemon world.

    And you are in it.

    Pokemon: Stench of Blood

Welcome to the first ever Pokemon RPG! If you don’t know what Pokemon is then you’ve lived in a cave all your life. If you do then you probably lament the horrendously weak plot line of the story ever since Gold Version. This RPG plans to rectify that.

Another outburst you may have is something along the lines of “Pokemon already is an RPGzorz!1111111111ONE!”. Yeah Pokemon is an RPG, but it’s an incredibly limited RPG. Why don’t you come and make your own adventure instead of relying on pre made quests and so forth?

Without further ado, let us begin.

    Story

Project Unbounded. The culmination of years of research and field study. The reason for the invention of the Pokedex. The true purpose behind sending trainers on journeys. Professors of all the islands were part of it along with several others. They never told a soul its true meaning.

Now Team Rocket discovered its existence. Agents were been sent out to assassinate prominent players in the project, such as Oak, Birch, and Elm. They succeeded and the crime syndicate began its own research into the possibilities of such a development.

The rewards of success are enormous. None could challenge their dominance. Team Rocket has nearly completed the project. They are just missing one crucial piece. In an act of desperation Lance, the champion of the Elite Four, placed the data inside a normal Pokeball. He never revealed its location and suffered hideous torture.

Since Lance was unable to send a message to his comrades, the remaining members of Project Unbounded set off on a quest to recover the Pokeball and save the world from Team Rocket. But the syndicate is also on a journey for the exact same purpose. They will not play fair. They play for keeps. Meanwhile, new Pokemon trainers are just beginning on their own travels. Oblivious to the conflict around them they trudge through the perils of this world.

The war in the shadows still rages and even those with a clogged nose can perceive the stench of blood.

    Story Progression

Each faction has specific goals that they wish to accomplish but largely the progression of the story is completely up to you. There are thirty seven badges that can be obtained along with the Battle Tower and the Elite Four.

Story will be furthered by posts called Trainer Memos which give specific goals that must be accomplished for the story to continue. Of course you are free to explore the Pokemon world at your leisure. Just things could get stale very quickly.

    Playing the Game

    Factions

Pokemon Trainers: As the core faction in the game, you’d think they’d be more aware of the conflict around them. Not a chance! These trainers live for the pokemon they carry and are the only group with the ability to breed or battle the Elite Four. Some trainers have been recruited by the Scientist to help with apprehending Team Rocket.

    Defining Characteristics

Ability to carry six Pokemon at once.
    Ability to breed Pokemon.
Ability to enter the Battle Tower.
Ability to battle the Elite Four.

    Goals

Obtain all thirty seven Gym Badges.
    Defeat the Elite Four.

    Aid the Scientists if possible.

Scientists: The remaining members of Project Unbounded are small in number yet still great in power. They race against the forces of Team Rocket in a grand effort to save the world from destruction. Having worked on Project Unbounded they know the consequences of misuse and they aren’t pretty.

    Defining Characteristics

Only able to carry three Pokemon at once.
Each have a special mind power.
    Ability to clone Pokemon.
Obtain two badges by completing goals instead of one.

    Goals

Defeat Team Rocket in the race for the Pokeball.
    Recruit Trainers to your cause.
Escape assassination by Team Rocket operatives.
Complete Project Unbounded or destroy all records of it.

Team Rocket: Organized crime at its finest, Team Rocket once ravaged the regions of Pokemon. Then they were disbanded by a young trainer. Now they have risen again, greater and more terrible than ever before. Nothing can stop them from achieving their goal of obtaining domination.

    Defining Characteristics

Only able to carry two Pokemon at once.
    Able to carry weapons.
Obtain up to two badges after a victorious battle.

    Goals

Defeat the Scientists in the race for the Pokeball.
    Recruit Trainers to your cause.
    Assassinate Scientists.
Unleash the horror of Project Unbounded upon the world.
Crush all who stand in your way.

    Universal Traits

    Ability to utilize PCs.
Ability to utilize Pokemon Centers and Marts.
    Ability to catch wild Pokemon.
    Ability to trade Pokemon.
    Ability to release caught Pokemon.

    Pokemon

There are no made up Pokemon in this RPG, only those that have been featured in the Pokemon games. A list of Pokemon can be found here.

    Catching, Breeding, Cloning, and Releasing

Catching: The standard way to obtain new Pokemon. Catching only occurs with wild Pokemon. Only certain Pokemon can be found in certain areas. For example you wouldn’t be able to catch a Slugma in an ice cave. Catching a Pokemon is guaranteed if you have at least one badge. Of course you can have it break out if you want. Pokemon unable to be caught include starters (except Pikachu) and legendaries.

Breeding: A technique only usable by Trainers to obtain new Pokemon, breeding runs hot and cold. It takes five IC posts to successfully breed a Pokemon. However, once it is hatched it can have any of the moves that either of its parents have. The Pokemon always hatches at the first stage of evolution. Breeding can happen at any time as long as you have a female and a male Pokemon.

Cloning: This ability is only available to Scientists and can only be performed at labs. Cloning occurs instantly yet it has some drawbacks. Cloning creates an exact copy and does not grant any special abilities.

Trading: If two players agree, they can each pick a Pokemon to trade between them. There are no trade backs so choose wisely.

Releasing: The act of releasing a Pokemon removes it from your PC or party into the wild. It cannot be caught again by anyone.

    Evolution

Evolution: This is caused when a Pokemon progresses through the stages of its life. It is caused when the player obtains a certain amount of badges and takes two posts to perform. Evolution is irreversible so once again choose wisely.

Evolve once with twenty three badges.
Evolve twice with forty seven badges.

    Moves

Moves: Any Pokemon has the ability to use any of its moves that it could possibly learn A bred Pokemon can use all the moves of its parents. There are no real restrictions for moves. TMs and HMs must be found through quests or rewarded by staff.

Some moves have more potency against certain types than others. Using these moves gives you an additional advantage. Use this type chart to determine which moves are best and when.

    Badges and Battling

    Badges

There are thirty seven normal Badges and ten extra for a grand total of forty seven badges in the game. By completing the goals in each Memo, players can obtain even more badges.

8 each from Sinnoh, Hoenn, Johto, and Kanto gyms.
    5 from Orange Islands.
    6 from the Battle Tower.
    4 from the Elite Four.
    ? from Battles.
    ? from Goals
    ? from Rewards.

As you can see the possible amounts of badges are only dependant upon how long one plays the game and how long the game lasts. Long time players gain the obvious advantage over new ones because they have more badges. What is the importance of obtaining these Badges?

    Battling of course!

    Battling

The outcome of the Battle is swayed depending on how many badges the Players have in comparison to each other. Basically it’s a leveling system only player driven. Another factor in battling is the evolution level. Evolution erases all badge advantage for the opposing player.

Example: Player A (47) uses Caterpie while Player B (42) uses Metapod. Player A’s advantage has been removed because Metapod is a higher evolution level than Caterpie. The battle is now decided by the players.

Battles are not necessarily turn based and it is up to the player how they should battle with others. Winning a battle results in the opposing player rewarding you with either a badge or a Pokemon.

Battles are won when all the player’s Pokemon have been KOed.

    Regions

    Rules

No g-modding: This means no doing anything beyond the realm of the imaginable. Don’t abuse your mind powers either.
No spamming: Defined as anything unrelated to the RPG without anything else related to the RPG in the same post.
No Flaming: Seriously, nobody wants to hear you rant about everything from cheese to pie. If you feel angry don’t take it out on us. Go throw a temper tantrum somewhere else. If there is a dispute, take it up with me and I’ll try to sort it out.
Follow all established BZP rules and guidelines.
Distinguish between IC (In Character) and OOC (Out of Character) in some way.
    Follow all staff rulings
Do not act like staff and reprimand other players. We as staff have probably noticed these problems and are getting to them. There is no need for you to do our job. If you feel there is a problem with a certain player then PM staff and we will take care of it for you.
Players are obligated to give recaps or answer questions when requested. Refusal to do so results in the loss of two badges. It is possible to have negative badges.
Do not control other PCs without permission of the player.
Do not kill PCs with the permission of the player.
Do not take the Pokemon of other players.
Players can only begin after submitting their form.

The game naturally rewards long time players with abundance in badges and therefore an advantage in battle. There are some rewards that can be given out by staff only and are rewarded to good RPers.

    Rewards include:

    Badges
    Rare Pokemon
    Extra Chars

I think you all deserve an explanation for my absence this past week. As a few of you know, my mother suffers from pancreatic cancer and several other painful/deadly diseases. She is taking literal boat loads of medication to combat these things as well as to counter her frequent anxiety attacks brought on by years of traumatic experiences. This leaves her barely able to talk, let alone stand or even walk. With my dad at work most of the day, it falls on me to take care of my siblings and my mom. Naturally this takes a lot of time and commitment and so I had to leave BZP for several days so that it wouldn't interfere with the things I had to do.

I don't know when I'll be back online, but until then I have a message for all you Villainous and Imagine players. Do something crazy. That is is an order, and you have my complete permission.

I hope to be able to RP soon.

So you want to jump in to EF's awesome new RPG, Villainous, but it's moving too fast and too many things have happened with even more on the way. The story is incredibly convoluted and you have no idea where to start. That's what this blog entry is for. Just like with Imagine, this will be updated every Saturday as an ongoing recap. Unlike Imagine, this will use a listed recap format, much easier to manage.

Everything You Need to Know to Jump Into Villainous

    1. The Shadowed One has comitted suicide.
-He appointed someone known only as Mr. Unknown to reign in his stead.
-No one knows who or where Mr. Unknown is.
-In his farewell speech, TSO inserted a hidden clue that says "Follow the Light of Mata Nui to Zakaz".
-The players have yet to decide on what exactly that means.

    2. There is a secret faction known as "the Six".
-The faction is comprised of players who are notified of their involvement in the faction via PM.
-These characters must not reveal their identity.
-These characters will decide on future plot developments, notify me, and I will post the story advancements.
-Other players have an overriding quest to uncover the members of this faction and discover its goals before it's too late.

    3. There is a League of Heroes meeting on Odina.
-All the leaders of the League Microfactions will be present.
-A mysterious figure known as the Silent One welcomes people to the meeting.
-Somehow, the Shadowed One appeared and detonated Odina.
-Turaga Dume was killed in the explosion.
-A shapeshifting Dark Hunter has taken his place.
-The League is relocating to Zakaz.

    4. The Vahki have been reprogrammed and are taking over Metru-Nui.
-The robots proclaim themselves emperors of the known universe.
-The Vahki are killing everything in sight.
-Morrakh has assumed command of the hordes.
-No one knows who reprogrammed the Vahki.
-The Vahki are no longer a Guild Microfaction. They have created their own faction.
