That sucks. I've heard they're amazing live. Although it seems they've mostly been playing stuff from Heritage lately.

Yeah I'm not too fond of Heritage truth be told; I kinda like their more "edgy" stuff... By the way, do you happen to know any other bands that have a similar style? I know it's hard to find vocals that compare to Akerfeldt's but I'd assume you may have come across something similar...

Insomnium and In Mourning are the two closest I can think of sound-wise, both being progressive-leaning melodic death metal with an emphasis on atmosphere. There's also a related band, Katatonia - their vocalist Jonas Renkse and Akerfeld are best friends and former roommates - that you may like.
