  1. The only thing I'd point out here is that dual names like "Zox Tomana" or "Smoke Monster" are extremely unusual in-universe. While, here on Earth, if I were introduced to a classroom as "Zoxara (or Zox) Tomana" the kids might call me "Mr. Tomana" (which would be hilarious), the conception of the titles "Mister" or "Miss" or "Mis'ess" isn't a thing I recall existing. If you want to highlight the age or the credibility, you may be better off with Sanskrit using some other title or form of address (Healer, Healer Tomana) besides "Mr." Besides, calling people by their first and last name is weird in almost any circumstance. Zox having the two names can be explained by various means, but I find it to be unusual for anyone to be called by their first and last name unless they're being 1. called for from among a crowd, 2. announced, 3. being called out by an authority figure. The use of titles is a more common method of formally naming someone. In looking for stuff about this on BS01, I came across the interesting trivia bit that GB's may number less than 20 O_o Makes a dual name character like Zox Tomana really weird XD Anyway, point is, I think a good way would be to have the formality appear in using such titles as their job title "Healer Tomana" and "Programmer (??) Sanskrit". "Healer Tomana" > "Zox Tomana" > "Tomana" > "Zox".
  2. When I submitted myself as myself, I did so partly out of curiosity as to how I would get portrayed (that is, I did it for the giggles). I'm quite pleased to be a healer Great Being, and couldn't help but laugh at reading the phrase "the regal form of Zox Tomana." I realize the intent was not comic, but I just can't help it XD On the serious side of things, something I really like with your portrayal of me as a character was this: While I certainly hope this is also true of me in real life: as a healer-in-training I commend Zox the GB on realizing when he needs to ask for help, and for knowing to take a precaution in favor of the patient. A healer/doctor inspiring confidence and trust in the patient (or the pt's family) is a huge deal. Knowing to go to his or her colleagues for help in difficult circumstances rather than go it alone and hope for the best... is even bigger. For a while, I expect that you're going to want to be using full names on a regular basis as part of establishing the characters, but I would point out that (to a lesser extent) "Zox Tomana" and (to a greater extent) "Toa Smoke Monster" can easily break the flow of a sentence, as perhaps "Pahrak#0579" might. You've probably already done this, but you may want to consider some good shortenings of each name. For me there's obviously "Zox" or "Tomana" or even Zoxara (what "Zox" is short for) when coming from someone whose known "me" for a long time. For TSM I'd suggest "Smoke," but he may have something else for that. For Pahrak#0579's Pahrak, you could make him unique from other Pahrak by calling him "579" (Five-Seventy Nine or Five-Seven-Nine). Any other comments I might have require me to read more. Also, I am so sorry for posting in the wrong topic *facepalm* I lost track of what tab I was in.
  3. Maybe he should get the job, Fishers: the world could always use more duck-themed, mysterious disappearances.
  4. *drops The Sword of Truth from to-read list* I thought it was still worth the read. You just have to realize it's coming. I've considered re-reading it, but geez is the prospect of encountering the soapbox, again, daunting.
  5. In Atlantis you do not apply for job, you apply for spot in lifeboats in case of disastrous flooding. We swear the city is safe...

    Drop Tables

I hear his sister took to computers like a ring in a bell.
  7. This makes me think about The Sword of Truth books by Terry Goodkind. He does this amazing job of creating the world and presenting it to the reader, but then he goes off on a tangent for pages and pages and pages, multiple times, to soapbox his socio-politcal views. It doesn't just annoy, it absolutely breaks the flow of the story. If you don't trust the story to bring across the theme you wish to convey, rewrite and rework it until you do.

    I'm bored, AMA

Pizza or pasta? Pancakes or Waffles? Who is the man dressed as a bat?
  9. I've given up on using them in my writing system (con-script?) for the most part. Maybe at some point... mayyybeee.... In the process of exploring the idea, though, I came up with several more letterforms I liked and have decided to (instead of using diacritics for vowels) simply revise my script to get rid of the letters that require you to lift the pen more than once. Basically I'm revising for laziness. The only reason I didn't try and make them all letters that don't require any lifts would be my inability to come up with a sufficient amount of visibly distinct letters without introducing curves, and I wanted to preserve the semi-runic aesthetic. I like the new script pretty much just as much as I like the old one. Both of those say "The foxfire burning in his heart is the light of a [heck] darker than black." I have a feeling that I could get used to writing either, but I think that the new script will be easier in the long run. I can't decide if 0400 is a good or bad hour to be thinking about this sort of thing.
  10. Instant bread just add water Oh my gosh, that was the best part of the movie. Last time I mentioned not baking bread from scratch, you got mad at me and said I was lazy >:C
  11. Regarding concerns I talked about in a previous entry: I'm now more okay with Finn's initial arc from Stormtrooper to good guy, still iffy on Kylo Ren's backstory and how all that may have played out, and still think Rey should be dead by the end of the movie. But the movie is still pretty good. Still recommend it. With that said, what do I want for dinner tomorrow?

    January update

Given that Rey is a young adult female, I'm calling biological impossibility on this one. Pfft. Rey isn't actually female. That was half the twist! No plot holes no problems!
  13. Fishers, I would argue that what TMD is suggesting isn't that a work of fiction has to be both true and false. A story does not have to be true in its details, its accidental aspects if you will, but rather needs to be true in its themes and spirit, its essential aspects (again, if you will). The Lord of the Rings is not a true story, but what it has to say about hope is. So, false in accidentals, true in essentials.
  14. February thought it could gain one day this year So I'm gonna make sure it loses seven That'll teach it to leap over the year That'll teach it Well, at least my birthday in the second week of February will come sooner this way. Just don't miss. I'd hate to not have a birthday.

Careful, he has the maths on his side. You never know what he may be capable of!
  16. So you can punch 'em, but can you poke 'em? So we can have a "poke 'em tournament"?
  17. There are Elemental Masks. And no, I don't think so. Kanohi have been presented as something akin to non-rechargeable batteries storing various kinds of power, though those batteries may last nigh indefinitely.
  18. Maybe they thought they could confuse you and, while they have you stunned, get you into the show?
  19. So, my scumbag brain woke me up at 3:30ish this morning. Couldn't go back to sleep. So I wrote a bit in a journal I'm trying to start keeping for reasons. For related reasons, I'm writing this journal in an alphabet of my own creation, and while I was going along, slowly getting faster and complaining to myself about some of the more complex letter-forms I had two thoughts: 1. This writing system looks awesome when I use my fountain pen (my opinion, your mileage may vary). 2. I might be able to make this go faster if I discarded this current form and re-did it using consonant-only letters, with vowels appended as diacritics like unto Hebrew or Arabic. Part of the reason I thought of this was that I was using a fountain-type pen, and part because I was thinking of how much information can be compressed into a small space if you are careful with making that information legible. My primary concern was that I have letter forms that require three or even four strokes with the pen I was using and elimination of vowels will free up my 9 simplest forms for use by consonants. Of curse, the downside to this is an impediment to writing English as I am most apt to do with this considering a couple of our most commonly used words have no consonant sounds (I write by sound, not letter by letter transcription): I, A. Might need a simple form to which vowels can be attached? While I'm doing this, in recognition of the fact that I don't really write my uber-basic conlang with this, I may reorganize the consonant order such that the most commonly used ones (is there a frequency table for sounds instead of letters?) use the newly freed, simplest letter forms. Example Image I might also want to revamp my math system, too. Currently, it is not conducive to writing formulae in easily read formats since I only have a way write things in big, long lines. Math is boring, why did thinking of that not help me sleep??
  20. They might be able to affect balance if they induce some serious vibrations, but I think a Toa of Water could affect our balance much more easily by causing changes in the behavior of the fluids in our ears directly. Nope. Probably, yes. We know of masks designed to morph (adaptive armor Kanohi of Toa Nuva), and it would be rather inconvenient if deformation killed a mask's power. We know physical damage can affect the power of a Mask (the Vahi, Ignika, and Brutaka's Olmak have all shown this), but as long as the structural integrity of a mask isn't affected I would suppose it is possible. Considering that the MU denizens are bio-mechs and we are told fairly plainly that their eyes and ears are sensors rather than organs, a Toa of Electrcity with a knowledge of how the sensors work could cut-off or overload those senses by affecting any (possible) circuits relevant. Admittedly, they could do the same with us by direct nerve stimulation of relevant brain regions. But, those same sensors could be hit by Toa of Iron as well through manipulation of component pieces, and probably by Toa of Magnetism, who could use magnetic fields to disrupt electrical pathways, or maybe induce currents. I dunno. This is all under the assumption that these sensors are hooked into the brain via wires and not organic pathways that are a bit more difficult to manipulate. Speaking of organic pathways, Toa Tuyet would be terrifying in our universe. Not afraid to kill, and capable of manipulating the majority component of our bodies...
  21. Sounds about right. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the plot to Kingdom Hearts IV: The Heart Awakens and that title sounds like it belongs to a romance novel
