Finally Built Brutaka
Bionicle Guru posted a blog entry in BIONICLE Ain't Dead to MeBrutaka holds an ominous distinction within not just my BIONICLE fandom, but my overall LEGO collection. 2006 was my last full year of high school before graduating in the spring of 2007 and going on to college after the summer. By the end of the year, it was not obvious what university I would be attending nor if my family could afford it. After throwing everything into obtaining the six Piraka and six Toa Inika, along with Vezon and Fenrakk, my spending for LEGO was severely throttled. I needed to save at last for college expenses! Thankfully, as the early months of 2007 rolled on, I got accepted in a few schools, including my second-favorite, and they gave me a very generous scholarship package. I knew all this by April 2007, so I could allow my personal wallet to breathe a little. With the Mahri and other BIONICLE "titan" sets for 2007 well on the way, I went about filling the gaps in 2006 collection. Brutaka was the most appealing of the larger sets, but I had been waiting for a sale. Alas, I grew impatient, and by May, I purchased him from Wal-Mart. And here is where the frightening distinction occurs: up to this point in my LEGO collection, I had opened and built every set I acquired. But I realized that when I bought Brutaka, I would only barely be able to build him before graduation, a family trip to Bolivia, and then preparing to be sent off to college out of state. I shuddered at the thought of him just collecting dust for the rest of the year, so I came up with an idea. I would leave the set sealed and stored in my closet until after I graduated college, whence (I assumed) would be the time that, with a career and the need to settle down wherever work took me, I would finally have the time and space to build him and any other sets collected between late 2007 and early 2011. Sadly, this was not (quite) to be. As my college years progressed, my LEGO collection indeed continued to grow at a faster pace, but with all boxed sets being merely admired before being stored in my closet back home. My naive hope for my post-college career backfired spectacularly when I landed a great job right out of graduation that (scarily enough) required me to essentially live on the road and in temporary housing wherever my worksites were. Even on my precious days and weeks at home, I was always too much of a nervous wreck over being called out to work again to just settle down and enjoy a lot of LEGO building. I didn't want to leave a bunch of incomplete builds collecting dust either! Many years passed. With a downturn in the market in 2016 and some family issues that forced me to take a lot of time off, I found a lot more free time wherein I could live day-to-day without worrying about having to pack up and drive away. After moving to a new apartment, I finally started to break open some sealed LEGO sets and enjoy building for the first time in ages. I guess it helped that my one actual vacation that year was to attend the LEGO Inside Tour in Denmark! And yet, by 2017, I still hadn't assembled anything BIONICLE from before 2010. I guess I finally got sick of it, and in 2017, I made an ultimatum with myself and my company. If they couldn't work with me to get that stable lifestyle I envisioned as a boy in high school, I would take my services elsewhere. And in early 2018, this is exactly what I did. I jumped ship for an offer from a much better company in a regular, Monday-Friday job scenario. With that kind of stability, I used my savings to buy my first house. And that brings me to the present. With the quarantining this year, LEGO has come to the forefront. Having a whole room in my house dedicated to it will certainly enable that hobby easily, but now I definitely had no excuse. And lo! I finally pulled that MISB Brutaka from my BIONICLE shelf and cracked those 14 year-old cardboard perforations open. Within 45 minutes, I had my first new BIONICLE character standing before me in gold and blue majesty. It was a great experience, and after some fiddling with his posing, placed the disgraced Order of Mata Nui member on the shelf with other assorted BIONICLE figures I rebuilt (including Thok, Kongu Mahri, Tohunga Nuparu, a Pahrak, Agori Berix, and a Nuurahk). Looking at the assemblage with pride, I wondered why it took me so long to finally build Brutaka. But in the end, I decided it didn't matter. The fact was, in spite of the wait, I did build him. I still felt that same joy that I knew would always find me when I built a new BIONICLE set. Those things have some magic in them, I tell you. For those who may be sitting on their own MISB BIONICLE stockpile, I encourage you to build them whenever you're able. Thank me when you're done!
The title says it all, I really like Axonn and Brutaka, but I like Botar too, is it worth buying extra just to make him? or should I just disassemble Axonn and Brutaka for a while? what do you think?
Here are two questions that I thought of while posting in one of the Games and Trvia Topics. Why did the OoMN allow Brutaka to have his Olmak during his time on Voya Nui and when he was sent to the Pit? For those who may not know, a Kanohi Olmak allowed its users to open portals to other places in one's own dimension or opened portals to other dimensions entirely. This arguably made it one of the most powerful non-Legendary Kanohi Masks IMO. According to BS01, there were only two Olmaks in the MU. One was Brutaka's, while the other was one that was given to a Toa in Jovan's Toa Team before the OoMN got a hold of it, but then Makuta Tridax somehow got it afterwards. I'm not sure if the OoMN knew that only two existed, but even if they didn't, I still think its questionable for them to let Brutaka have such a powerful mask. Yes, I do see how it could've been useful for Brutaka in helping keep the Ignika safe. After all, he could've just opened a portal to another dimension and thrown intruders into it, thus ending their threat to the Mask of Life. But I don't think that's a big enough reason for the Order to let him have it while he was on guard duty. The Order could've used it to help out in different situations around the MU. And Brutaka easily could've had another Kanohi Mask to help him out with his job. But even if there was a good reason for Brutaka to have the Olmak during his time on Voya Nui, it doesn't change the fact that Botar sent him to the Pit while he still had it. Why didn't Botar take the Olmak from Brutaka before sending him to the Pit? As stated before, this is a powerful Kanohi Mask. And even if Brutaka had a good reason for having it on Voya Nui, I don't see a reason for the Order to sent it with him to the Pit. Even if they didn't know the Mask would've been damaged by the Pit Mutagen in the water, thus making its powers somewhat unstable, Brutaka still could've used it to attempt an escape. Of course, his options on locations would've been limited due to the loss of his ability to breathe air, but he still could've escaped to an ocean or other body of water in the MU or another dimension. But maybe I'm missing something here. I've read through both Brutaka's and the Olmak's BS01 pages, but didn't see anything to answer the questions I have about this. Of course, there could be a Greg quote somewhere explaining these situations that I'm missing. But regardless, I bring my questions to you all for answers. Why do you think the Order of Mata Nui allowed Brutaka to have an Olmak while he and Axonn were watching over the Mask of Life? And why didn't Botar take it from him when he took him to the Pit?
Brutaka's Second Pair of Arms?
Junior Shark posted a topic in Bionicle DiscussionThe title pretty much says it all. Last night I rebuilt my Brutaka set. He's still incredibly awesome. But what's up with his second pair of arms? Checking BioSector, there's only a reference to throwing knives kept in his armor. Is there any other canon reason for the arms? Are they even arms? They bulk what would otherwise be a plain Piraka upper torso, so do they serve to bulk him up?
BBCC #69: Big Daddy Brutaka
Konahrik posted a topic in Bionicle-Based CreationsComing from another dimension, Brutaka suddenly appeared and started wandering Okoto on an unknown mission, often heard rambling about an "Ignika", and "crazy silver half breed skakdi". Having proven to be more formidable than a Master, Brutaka is left alone aside from the occasion skull spider that dare try and pry his mask away. Entry Picture Comparison with Protector of Fire Comparison with Lhikan Comparison with Kopaka Comparison with Axonn Side Back Back spikes? No, actually his back daggers. Gallery when public. Good luck to everyone in the contest.
Weekly Wondering #3
Konahrik posted a blog entry in blogs_blog_1881WW4: Did Brutaka have a tagline similar to the Piraka like "The Bully", "The Drifter" etc, or am I just imagining things?
Chro posted a topic in Bionicle-Based Creations^ C l i c k f o r G a l l e r y ^ Dicalian is a member of Brutaka's species who was sent to Metru Nui as a representative. He decided to hold out in the city during the Visorak invasion, but was overrun due to his own overconfidence.Like all members of his species, Dicalian possesses a natural resistance to poisonous and mutagenic agents, and so he was not fully transformed by the venom of the spiders. Instead, the consular gained sharpened claws and a wicked spine, lengthened arms, and a bizarrely warped and fused Kanohi Suletu, which can no longer be removed from his face. I've recently decided to make MOCs that represent members of underrepresented canon species. This is my second one, an attempt at representing the darker side of Brutaka's species (which unfortunately remains unnamed).Feedback is appreciated.
All the Great Spirit's MenSo, yeah. I felt like making a comedy about the Order of Mata Nui. Considering I've already got another comedy and I'm planning a third, this won't be updated too regularly. Character list: Helryx: Has a tendency to overreact to everything. Loves destroying stuff, and smashing people's faces in with her mace. Axonn: Pretty much normal in terms of personality. Everyone who meets him has a strange urge to attack or outdo him, and always fail miserably. Brutaka: They talk about themselves in the plural for some reason. They don't like Axonn, and continually play pranks on him. They also often say and do very strange things. Jerbraz: Loves to startle people, but always gets annoyed when someone brings up his invisibility. Sometimes pretends to be a ghost, which really weirds everyone out. Vezon: It's Vezon. Do you need any more information? Johmak: Able to split into a bunch of small shards and reform at will, she tends to materialize in the middle of things at random moments. Krakua: Likes to play loud music, and generally acts like an annoying teenager. Mostly loud music, though. Tobduk: Overly violent, often kills Makuta in particularly painful ways. Trinuma: Constantly does annoying, bothersome things to people, and then makes them still like him using his Mask of Charisma. Botar: An unintelligent brute, Botar constantly tries to take people to the pit. Hydraxon: Botar's more intelligent but less skilled comrade in irrationally arresting people for no particular reason. Umbra: Axonn's annoying next-door neighbor, a nerdy fanboy, that constantly makes references (Note the last sentence of the quote at the top) to popular franchises. Chapter 1 Helryx: Alright people. I want to knock something's head off. Therefore, I'm doing it to this Makuta. Tobduk: KILL! KILL! KILL! Mutran: Help... Me... Helryx: *Knocks his head off* Tobduk: YAY! Axonn: That was kind of fun, but can we go do something useful now? Hydraxon: Useful? Like putting you scum in THE PIT? Botar: BOTAR HALP HYDRAXON! Axonn: ... Hydraxon: A quiet one, eh? I'll take you on, quiet or otherwise! *Fires Cordak Blaster* Axonn: *Dodges and smashes him over the head with his axe* Botar: AXE MAN HURT HYDRAXON! BOTAR HURT AXE MAN! Helryx: *Hits him over the head with mace* Why did we hire these two again? Brutaka: We are a pretty butterfly! Helryx: Why, thank you Brutaka. That explains... Absolutely nothing. Brutaka: WE CAN SWING OUR SWORD BECAUSE IT IS AN ELEPHANT! Axonn: ... Brutaka: Oooh! Axonn! We like to make Axonn annoyed! Axonn: Can I go back to Voya Nui yet? Helryx: Mind if I come with you? Brutaka: We can sail Axonn's boat through the sea of lollipops! Axonn: Yes. Brutaka: Lollipop wave! Candy for everyone! Helryx: Then no, you can't go back. Brutaka: All our friends and Axonn stay with the pretty unicorn island in the sky! Axonn: *Sigh* Brutaka: Yay! we have stolen Axonn's axe? But what will we do with it? We don't know, so we'll just give it back. Axonn: ...

Taka Nuvia posted a topic in General ArtAnother thumbnail which takes you to the full drawing. ;3 Slightly rough-ish CG art featuring Brutaka. He';s always been one of my favourite characters. ^^ I'm not too practised when it comes to digital art, so I did a doodle today. I love the light-on-dark technique, as you can see.It is not obvious that I used Brutaka's actual head for reference, huh? x3Comments and Criticism greatly appreciated. :3
