The Weekly Cool #4: Remembering Things In The Nick Of Time
Takuma Nuva posted a blog entry in Obligatory Volcano Lair
There's nothing quite like remembering things the moment before you've spelled your own doom. I can think of plenty of times at my job where I averted disaster or embarrassment by remembering things at the last possible second. I know I'd be mad if somebody forgot to put the ranch in my to-go order. There's also those times in conversations when you're about to say something and right as you open your mouth you realize that a person in the conversation might be offended by something or the joke may be ill-timed (black humor around somebody who just experienced a death in the family, for example). You know what else? Remembering things like posting a weekly blog entry every Wednesday when you've only got a half-hour left on the clock before it's too late. xD «TN» -
When I'm thinking about nostalgic things, sandboxes always come up eventually. Many hours were wiled away playing in the sandbox when I was 4, 5, 6, 7-ish years old. Our sandbox wasn't one of those fancy, cheap, plastic deals either. Our sandbox consisted of four long pieces of wood. Sort of like square logs, for lack of a better description. Worked for us because it was a decent size, too. Let me tell you, we knew how to have fun in the sandbox. We would get sand everywhere. I don't remember how many times my parents would shout at us from the house, "Keep the sand in the sandbox!" We would get so dirty that, for a while, unless we had special permission we were only allowed to play in the sandbox on Saturdays because we'd be taking baths anyways (weekly bathing, haha ). Heck, I'll be the first to admit that sometimes I'd tuck my shirt in, fill it with sand, and then walk around saying, "Hey, look at me! I'm fat!" xP Water. It was great for sandboxes! After a rain we'd gather up water that filled any of the yard toys and use it for the sandbox. Water could make moats, rivers, lakes, and such. Or you could take some sand, clump it together with water, and then when it dried out it would hold it's shape if you were gentle. "Fossils", we called 'em. Of course, our parents always told us to dump it out, so it was a race to find all the water and have as much fun as we could before we were told to dump it. Then there was the year with all the ground hornets(?). They loved to burrow in the sandbox so we could never play in it. Made us sooooo mad. But yeah, there's no denying the awesomeness of a sandbox. You guys ever do anything crazy in a sandbox? «TN»

I've been so busy lately with my new "responsibilities" that I almost forgot that I said I was doing The Weekly Cool on Wednesdays! Obviously too many of you guys aren't old enough to remember things like last week's Tape Rewinder, so I'll try to shoot for something a little more current. Now I'll bet when you saw "Staff" you thought I was going to talk about the administration, moderators, and such of BZP. Well no such luck. I'm talkin' about sticks here pal. I mean, think about it. Staffs are quite the handy object. You can see them used in many movies or video games as a form of low-tech weapon. Sometimes they're even used to channel some sort of magic and/or power. Look at the Rahkshi, they had staffs. That's because the Makuta knew what was up. Staffs are in. Not even just for fiction. Whenever I go for a hike I always scan around to find just the right walking staff. If I find a better one along they way I'll even trade out my current staff for it. So, what do you think? Got any good staff stories to share? «TN»

Forums offline for sooo long. I never realise how much I love my BZPower until these things happen. Anyways, this is something I was going to start up before the offline bit. I wanted to do something on a regular basis since I'm so bad at doing that. Y'know, a personal thing I'd like to overcome. I also decided that I was going to do in on Wednesdays becase my mid-weeks are so boring. Yes, I'm aware it is currently Thursday but I don't feel like waiting another week. Basically, the idea is that every Wednesday I shall post an entry about something that I deem worthy of the title "cool". It could be a person, place, thing, or one of many other possibilities. The bottom line is, it's something cool. So, for my first entry, I'm doing something nostalgic. Remember back in the day when we were young'ns? We had these things called" VCRs" that played a movie using a "VHS" or "tape". Funny thing about these "tapes" is that, unlike a DVD, once the movie was finished playing the tape had to be, as we referred to it, "rewound". Many VCRs had this capability built-in, but sometimes a tape rewinder did the job so much better. You pop the tape in, close the lid, and the rewinder went to work for ya. Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around tape rewinders. I want a show of hands, who remembers the days of hearing you mother/father/sibling/etc. shout out from upstairs "Who didn't rewind this tape last time they used it?!" Man, didn't that just get on the nerves when you had to rewind the tape yourself before watching the movie? Perhaps even more memorable is the way a child can make a toy of everything. I remember well the days I'd put Duplo animals on a closed tape rewinder and then hit the button. The lid would pop open and send the Duplos flying through the air. *nostalgic sigh* «TN»
