To A Little Nation

This is going to be patriotic, but it's necessary, IMO.   At least two centuries ago, a small island in the South China Sea was found.   Fast forward to the twentieth century, and the island has grown. It gained independence, like how the United States of America had the Declaration of Independence signed and recognised.   Fast forward 42 years from its independence, and you'd find that Singapore is thriving as a successful world hub in the year 2007.     So, what I really mean to say is:

Tiring Day

The wooden door swung open to reveal an empty room, much to her delight. She had a most tiring day, dealing with her music assignment with it blasting her ears off twice after both lecturers adjusted the volume of her headphones to unbelievable intensities.   After her ears were 'boxed', the music assignment done, she found herself with enough time to complete her assignment. Taking the advantage, she settled herself at the Mac and proceeded to work on the report that was to be handed in with t

Thrill Me

It's the bloom of the thrillers, down here in the Library.   At least, it still flows along with the main-stay-plot of new Toa, new island, new enemies, but this new line of epics have shown lots of fight scenes, running from danger, and what makes it catching is the increase of drama and action in the story.   This I noticed in the ECC, and outside. Mind me for being the equal of a fash hag gossip column, I hate those magazines, but while many new writers put their bets in that plot to get t

Three Thousand Miles

And all the while, I've been going in circles and losing my focus...     The Black Parade filled my head. I apologize, but the view counter got me all excited! Three thousand views and counting! The numbers may seem small, but it made my tired day happy. (Tired - a day at school of note-taking, going out to assist friend in a dire shopping trip and help for assignments and weathering through a cacophanic thunderstorm, worrying about my poor dog that would be beyond petrification.)     And

Thought-plague

I was stressed.   The lack of sleep two nights ago, no thanks to a sudden urge to do a search-spree on DeviantArt for Transformers fan-art pictures (and becoming scarred and scared by some of them since I can't draw) had contributed to the nasty mood, but that did not spark it. It was the adults around me who sparked it.   Snapping at this I like puppy dogs and trying her patience does not bode well with her.   Despite my rather light username and the often frisky and light attitude does

There's Wise Progress

Nasty facts about dental surgery:   1) I now face a 2% risk of permanent (possibly partial) numbness to the right side of my lip and jaw if I go through this. 2) I also face a 0.1% risk of permanent (most likely partial) numbness to the right side of my tongue if I go through this. 3) The dental surgeon realized that I'm one of those kids who hasn't done any major dental surgery before. He suggests sedation. 4) And I don't mind the idea. It's 1 needle on my hand versus 4 needles in my mouth

The Silent Eye

On my way home today, I encountered a most interesting, but heart-warming sight. There were four young students on the train, all with a caretaker, I believe. All of them were giggling and grinning, sometimes laughing a little. While their laughter was loud and rancorous, not a word was traded. They were sporting hearing aids, and their hands moved and articulated animatedly.   I finally understood.   One of them was suddenly distracted by something he saw. He stood up from his seat and da

The Saga Ends

My grandmother has passed away peacefully - just as we hoped.   I've just survived the harrowing graveyard shift, watching over the premises of the wake site and all the flower wreaths. Staying up all night and not partying is not so fun, but the remaining relatives who stayed behind as well made good chat - until I K.O.ed halfway through the conversation.   I'm fine, and am providing support for my family as well. I'm past the bereavement stage, and I hope things can get back to norm soon.

The Return Of The Roach

If any would recall this entry, I had a nasty encounter with an insect at the outer reaches of my room, where the last I saw of the culprit was its feet going over the staircase directly to the first floor.   9:30pm, after a boring Christmas dinner at a parent's friend's home, and I had just put down my bag - and noticed something brown scuttle on the edge on my bed and disappear behind the blankets.   There was only one thing that was brown, scuttled and preferred hiding places.   I had to

The Real Fiction: The Letter

This post is a pioneering one for me: my fiction, published online for the first time.   Now, I cannot guarantee that this will be shown more prominently on this blog. I am *somewhat, maybe more than that* proud of this piece of work.   It was a take I did on that harmful Creative Writing session, and I freshened it up, edited it here and there, and finally handed it to the lecturer.   It would not go to any competition or anything, but it was a creative release. I have not done a short story

The Need To Nail-bite Has Come

The idiosyncratic mannerism of nail-biting often means that the person doing this dirty act is either nervous or has a bad habit to kick. (I'm not in any way being nasty to Dr. Bionicle - He is breaking the habit. Go go!)   I'm nervous. There's a private function I'm to perform at, next (or this) Friday! Egads and eek, and the night's repertoire is still slightly flawed. I've been drilling - but to a point of exhaustion. I realised this, of course, and took a break. I don't know when I'll get b

The Moon Is Pie

Well, not quite. It's just that the Chinese have turned it into cake.   If you all know what a mooncake is, then good. If not, go to Wikipedia. At least the information there is quite valid.   This past tool of war - haha - is now a token part of the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Lantern Festival, and the Mooncake Festival. (I don't know if there're any more names for this.)   But, what Wiki didn't say was that another way to participate in the festivities is to make mooncakes and le

The Longest Word

I only know two words that may qualify as the longest English word.   Antidisestablishmentarianism - no brainer. Most of us knew this. Opposition to the belief of a state church is the meaning, I think. It had to do with a church and opposition, that's what I know. 28 letters. (Nukora: Disesstablishmentarianism is the seperation of church and state I thought, making "antidis" the oposition of the seperation of church and state. *shrug*) I think he got it.   Floccinaucinihilipilification - a

The Literal Dead

While ol' xccj is handing out the literal goodies by the dozen, I found myself in a very bad state.   It's been nearly a month since I've published any fiction. Safe to say, my writing pen dried its ink out a long time ago, and it's not going for a recharge any time soon.   It feels bad to have a writing block. It makes me feel so sour and sober... I'm not even writing straight.   I put all blame on RL. Seriously, school has kick-started and has dragged me down in time and brain power. I'm s

The Last Dash

The snapping that was going on in my mouth was far from comforting. I didn't like it.   But it had to be done.   I was waiting for more than a year for this day to come.   I'd never thought it'd be this tedious.     The orthodontist patiently worked.     Suddenly, there was a lack of tension in my mouth, tension that I had grown accustomed to for a year.   And a rather putrid stench wafted.     The orthodontist told me that I had to brush my teeth before she could continue.   I closed my

The Harmless Creative Writing Workshop

I was wrong: it actually was harmful.   I felt like passing out after the 'harmless' creative writing workshop, session number two, was done and I reached home.   This time, I was the first to arrive at the designated venue, which was confirmed last night.   Assisting the lecturer-in-charge, Suan, to organise the place a bit, I mentioned to her that I had an idea of a short story and it was brooding in my head for a week, and I had planned to get it down today in the workshop.   She stoppe

The First Date

I received an SMS from Kevin - right after my Grade 8 exam - about him having a free pair of movie tickets for that night, two days ago.   It was an apt time for him to send that message over - the exam had killed my mood for the day. Imagine having to adapt a piano score to an organ score on the spot - something I've never done before - and receiving your first aural test as a 5/4 piece. It was daylight murder.   And along came a chance of saving the day from being a poorly one.   I may not

The Final Run

The last week of the school term, and year, has arrived. Good grief, and the overload of tests/exams/stress/anxiety that followed was surmounting the previous stress I had with my O Levels.   And when Monday came, wham.     My keyboard test, one which I loathed, scored me 81%. Thank you, composers who created 'Route 66' and 'Wonderful Tonight' and all my prior chord knowledge! I made it!   Now, for far harder things to come. Tomorrow's a practical test in studio knowledge that I hope I would

The Entertainer

The first thing I said into the mic was, "Mic test, mic test."   Typical of an audio technology student, after the first mic failed me with a dead battery.   The sea of students before me looked at me with lazy eyes.   "Are you guys asleep?"     I was invited back to to my alma mater as a guest speaker for its Career Fair 2007. Other panel members were a Tiffany and Christina, Steffi and Clarissa. These students were all from junior college.   I was the only student from polytechnic.   T

The Day I Turned 2-1

I'm finally old enough to drink in America. But that's not important - I don't like drinking anyway. Birthday was a little meh, until I had dinner out and romped around town with my boyfriend, taking in the sights and sounds of the places my previous age wouldn't have let me close to. Now I realize it's not as much a hoot as others make it, so I'm happy, curiosity satisfied, and amused by a techno-didgeridoo player busking on a bridge.   As for birthday thoughts, there's just one reflection I

The Caribbean Came

I have fully admitted that I'm Singaporean in more than one occasion, post or comment.   Now, I can't be any more proud of my nationality than now.   Why?   Those who have watched the 'Pirates of the Caribbean 3' trailer would know.     It's absolutely awesome of the storywriters behind the movie to pull Singapore into the big story! Finally! After its quizzical and interesting mention in the first movie, people have wondered if Singapore was a pirate state.   And here, they fully show it,

The Bug That Inspiration Is

~~   Tahu looked up to the large being above, his Hau Nuva showing his frustration clearly.   "Stranger, let me get this straight. You found strange signals on my home and brought your armada here to eradicate a ... De-seep-tin-con threat?"   The being nodded. Its voice replied, sounding very strange and wired. Indeed he was, because Tahu Nuva could identify only one thing on that being that stood many miles higher than he: It had wires and glowing optics. That was it.   "Yes, that is correc

The Brain Juice Flows

Listening to: Dave Grusin – Peter Gunn Theme     Well, I feel the brain juice coming back, but how I got it back is some story.   Today, I wasn’t feeling so jolly, but at school that promised to change. I started every morning in the school canteen, laptop booted up and running amok in BZPower, FanFiction, and the sort.   Well, I turned my morning tune to Enya tracks, lulling and ambient mood music selected to start my day on a positive note, then turned up some ‘good feeling’ pop.   To thi

Thar Be A Maraudin'

GAAH!   Just when I thought I could ask Omi a little earlier about pirate cosplay advice, my players landed the bomb on me: We were definitely going out in garb - tomorrow.   The Pirates of the Carribean Medley is going out in full force. Today was the sound practice and everyone got a nice shock to hear the Port Royale theme filtering through the speakers. There were cheers and hoots.   So, to keep things up, we decided to cosplay.   The closest character I resembled was Will Turner. Howeve
