XDD There's nothing wrong with sparkles, colors and love and peace! ^^ I love those things about as much as I like the imagery in Edgar Allen Poe (which is amazing. Seriously, The House of Usher has amazing imagery).

Watch the later episodes. The first one is a tiny bit unbearable.

The later ones are better, BUT it is annoying.

I can understand the concept and all the girly cuteness, and although I like some of the happy vibe, I can't take just how much of it there is. Too much peace - nothing can possibly be that peaceful and lovely and colorful.

Try watching the SFDebris take on the first episode. Watching it with his voice over is just so much more better than the actual episode.

I like Edgar Allen Poe...

but too much sweet and sparkly girlyness usually makes me rather, uh, well not exactly aggressive, but it gets on my neves eventually.

The first episode is usually only a good place to start off as a new fan if you have patience to sit through it and then watch a better episode. The first two episodes are generally recognized as some of the weakest episodes even by fans.

Personally, unless I had a "captive audience", I'd probably start somebody off with an episode featuring a really good song by somepony other than Pinkie Pie, such as "Suited for Success", which remains one of my favorite episodes. Alternatively, I'd start with a really strong, heartfelt, character-driven episode like Season 2's "Sisterhooves Social".

But if you really don't intend to give it a second chance after the first episode, you might be entirely right that it's not for you. Just because your peers like something doesn't mean you'll find the same enjoyment in it. And even if you do like certain things in common, you might like them for different reasons. There have been a lot of Transformers fans here on BZPower, but none of them have ever ostracized me for not being interested in it, and no decent MLP fan should do the same.

Or the season 2 openers with John de Lancie as Discord,the spirit of chaos.

I watch the show but I'm not a 'brony'. I don't obsess over ponies, or whenever I see a pink pony I don't say 'Oh look pinkie pie!' I like the comedy of it. A lot of the jokes inspire me to make comics.

If you ever pluck up the courage again, I suggest the season two opener. Quite possibly the second best episodes, beaten by "Lesson Zero." Come to think of it, you might like LZ.
