  1. Hey, does anybody get how the pony surname system works? Applejack, Apple Bloom, Big MacIntosh, and Granny Smith are all in the Apple family, even if only two of them have Apple as part of their name. The Cutie Mark Chronicles says that they're related to the Oranges. But people talk about Twilight Sparkle as if Twilight is her first name, and Sparkle is her last name.

I just assume that some families develop naming traditions (such as AJ's family having an apple theme), while others don't. When marrying into one of these families, a mare may sometimes change her name to honour the tradition, adopting a part of her husband's name. EDIT: Maybe the Apple family is also descended from a broader fruit-farming line of ponies, hence their relation to the Oranges. Over time, each generation's talents became more specific as the population grew.
  2. If Bionicle was to be made into a TV show, how should it be done? What kind of style and tone? Are there any particular people (animators, directors, voice actors, etc) you would want working on it? At the moment, I'm thinking detailed hand-drawn animation with nice, Miyazaki-style scenery, at least, for the 01-03 parts of the story. The Metru Nui arc seems more suited to CGI or Flash.

  3. I'd eliminate the stupid gender rule, and then flip around all the characters' genders. Okay, I'd do more than that, but that's what the Bionicle: Animated project is all about. =P

That's probably the main change I'd make, too. Also fits in with the "appeal to a wider audience" thing.
  4. It had an original, engaging storyline that managed to provide some genuine surprises and twists. However, that said, I would much rather see a continuity reboot than a continuation of the current storyline. The main flaws were in the way the story was told, rather than the story itself, and I would like to see Lego give it another chance.

  5. Which Legendaries, Rausaro? ~B~

Timid Jirachi, Modest /Timid Celebi, Relaxed Suicune, Adamant Entei, Timid Latios and Latias... and a Timid Mew. Really, it's just the formula I'm trying to master. All will have Pokerus with the correct boosting items. I just need the formula for the general buildset of two maxed stats and a +4 evs in another stat. If you give me one for the 4 timid pokemon, and one for both Adamant and Relaxed.
It really depends on how you want to use them. As in, are you going for offense or defense? Do you have any movesets in mind yet? That said, you'll generally want to max Entei's Attack and Speed, so 252 points for each of those, plus 6 in HP. Timid Latios is almost always 252SpA, 252 Speed, 6 HP. However, the other timid Pokemon may or may not want to be bulkier, depending on what you're going for. Those legendaries have fairly wide movepools, and so may be able to fill any number of different roles on your team. Relaxed is not the best nature for Suicune, but it's funtionally fairly similar to Bold. Max its HP and Defense, with 6 in Special def.
  6. For me, I'd say: Twi: 50%AJ: 15%Rarity: 15%Fluttershy: 10%Pinkie: 5%Dash: 5% Also why do these ads keep asking me "Want a Girlfriend?" when I'm in this topic.

Hey, at least they're not saying "Want a boyfriend?". Ironically, I get a lot of girlfriend ads in other places, but here I'm just getting manly stuff like Transformers and rugby. I guess MLP really is manly now.
  7. I've noticed that pronunciation of the word "Pokemon" varies from country to country. So far, I've got: Japanese- Pokay-monAmerican- Pokey-monAustralian- Pokuh-mon I first noticed when I saw Australian ads for Black and White, and noticed that they use the Australian pronunciation listed, rather than "Pokaymon" like in the show. Anyone got any more?

  8. OK... Ponies aren't manly, and neither is pink. If man watches show with pink ponies and then shoves it in the faces of people who don't care about said show, man will get laughed off the face of the earth. Man will lose his man-card, and the respect of his peers, in all likelihood. Also, I have a rocket launcher, so any counter arguments are invalid.

Oooohh... outdated gender stereotypes! Retro! Wait... A-are you going to try to take away my woman-card because I likeBionicle, too?
Women don't get card[/sexist] :P jk Guys it isn't really THAT girly. It's unisex.
I don't even get a card?! (That actually is pretty sexist, when you think about it. If liking something "manly" doesn't affect a woman's reputation, but liking something "girly" affects a man's, then that implies that things aimed at girls are automatically considered inferior! Sexist against both men and women.) And, didn't we agree that all the explosions, bear-fighting and vomit jokes in MLP more than make up for the girlyness?

  10. As long as it's not done by the same people who did the HF miniseries... So, teenage ninjas with elemental powers, huh? This show will have to work to differentiate itself from Avatar: The last Airbender, especially since the latter has a sequel miniseries coming out in 2012. The comedic tone may be enough to set it apart, as long as it's done well.

  11. She just straight up murdered a bear.

It requires context to fully understand what she was doing and why she did it (It's from the episode "Lesson Zero"if you want to find out). However, I think that little gif will help people understand that this show ain't all sugar and sparkles.
  12. That said, there is still an overwhelming amount of hatred towards this show, even on BZP. Worse still, the mods don't seem to be doing much about it. It's funny how the sexist nature of this issue is almost never brought up. I mean, if someone was telling me I shouldn't like Bionicle because I'm female, I think the mods would come down on them like a ton of bricks.

I find this statement to be mostly unfounded. Please let me know where I am / we are failing to keep the peace.
It's not in this forum, so not a deficiency on your part. In GD, however, one member was endlessly bashing the bronies, even declaring "war" at one point. i reported him several times, but the only response was a few vague "let's all play nice" type posts from the mods. I could be wrong; they may have done something else behind the scenes, but it doesn't seem to have had much effect- his posts haven't been edited, his sig is still anti-brony, and he hasn't lost any proto. Then again, he hasn't posted in there in the last 24 hours or so, so perhaps something has happened that I'm not aware of.
  13. After watching a whole bunch of episodes yesterday, I think I've finally formed a coherent opinion of this show. It'd be a stretch to call me a "fan" (at least to the extent that you guys are), but it is certainly very good as far as kids' shows go. It's cute, funny, clever, and has a strong moral centre- essentially, everything a good kids' cartoon should be. I can definitely understand why people like it. There's nothing that completely "blew me away" about it, but then, I think that a lot of the surprised reactions have been the result of finding out that a "girls' show" can be genuinely entertaining. I wasn't surprised because this is something I've been trying to convince people for a long time! I just haven't had any proof until now. So, I guess you could say that while I like - but not love- the show itself, I really appreciate the positive reaction people have had to it. I love the fact that it exists. Hopefully, it will spawn a number of imitators to help enforce the idea that something targeted at girls doesn't have to be insipid and dumbed-down, and maybe, just maybe, eventually overhaul the idea that girly=lame. I constantly hear arguments that little boys aren't interested in things they percieve as "girly", but I think that may have something to do with the quality of media aimed at girls. Sexism against males- especially when done by other males- is almost never discussed in our society. Which of course enforces another double standard- that women need to be protected from this stuff, while men should be able to just shrug it off. But even though I haven't experienced outright sexism directed at me personally, the responses to a recent topic of mine revealed that there is a lot of negative sentiment towards the idea of Bionicle appealing to more girls, and to having more girls in the fandom. Make of that what you will. So, while the show hasn't made me want to change my username, put ponies in my sig and avatar, write fanfics, or spend hours discussing who the best pony is, it does make me want to start throwing together ideas for more shows that incorporate interesting female characters and intelligent, funny storylines. (I recently biught a copy of Adobe Flash- the program used to animate MLP- so I may even be able to put together a fake trailer for one of them.) Oh, and for those people who were concerned that liking MLP deters the ladies? I wouldn't worry about that. At least, not if she's the right kind of girl. Then again, what would a Bionicle fangirl like me know?
