  1. I thought of this long ago but rejected it, on the grounds that that would create a strong downward wind that it would be very dangerous to try to fly airships up (most of them on autopilot, but all laden with the Matoran they're trying to protect). True, Matau could help prevent that, but the distance of this tunnel may be very long, and there would be a serious risk he'd run out of elemental energy fast, trying to hold back such a strong pressure differential. Also, true, it could help explain the sudden strange stormy weather during the Visorak Saga, and true as well that it might normalize by the time they tried the airships, so I wouldn't rule it out. But I had theorized for a long time that there is an airshield, and so there's no need for something to break to allow them to pass. This thing is a spaceship; it makes sense there would be a shield that prevents air from crossing out, but not solid matter per se. And this pressure differential would exist across all the realms; air in for example Karzahni's dome should need to rise up to fill its low-pressure zone. That would take a long time; Karda Nui had a thousand years for water proven to be entering, yet did not entirely fill. So this would really be an MU-wide massive wind event that would probably last for many years, making all the tunnels between domes filled with the fastest wind, possibly enough to interrupt trade economics (cost more fuel to chug through headwinds). But that didn't happen, so I think an airshield is necessary. Also, icing is caused by a temperature differential, not a pressure differential per se. We shouldn't assume it's pressure that causes that; like I said, it would be very possible to have a "multi-layer airshield" effect to keep air pressure about the same everywhere inside. It's possible the land-level is heated, but not much above that. Since such a natural multi-layer pressure fix appears necessary on Spherus Magna, it makes sense the much smaller MU domes would include an imitation of it. Thinner air would actually be a problem more for the Toa and their unconscious passengers' breathing (though as long as there's an airshield at the top, Matau should be able to easily handle making air inside the airships). In my opinion there had to have been something more substantial than an "air shield" over the eye holes, like a giant lens of glass or some other transparent material. It could have shattered in the GC and then the rest would all make sense. Your theory about the air from Aqua Magna rushing in and creating the different weather patterns and storms in Web of Shadows is a fantastic theory that makes a lot of sense. On the issue though of there being massive wind storms throughout the entire MU for the thousand years while all of the domes equalized. Remember that all of the sea gates leading out of Metru Nui were closed? This could hypothetically make the theory stand up because only the Metru Nui dome would be the only one to get affected by the atmosphere breach. Yes I know that Karzahni sticks out into Metru Nui's dome and that means that maybe there is still a land route this is unsealable, but work with me here, it's a cool idea. Perhaps excess wind blowing through Karzahni may have been nothing new...
  2. MU inhabitants were capable, but I think we established in a much older topic that Nuju and Nokama ensured the ice wasn't a problem for them. For Matoran-piloted craft that would have remained a problem. So, that does at least lessen the percentage of likely sky explorers. And until the GC, Toa didn't really have an obvious reason to go exploring as opposed to rescuing Matoran in trouble, etc. etc. But it's also hard to imagine that nobody explored in all that time. Still, possible. That's a good point to bring up. Here's another theory that is just wild speculation on my part. Lemme know if you guys think it could help to explain it. Normally prior to Mata Nui crash landing and things getting all broken and whatnot, Metru Nui was a sealed environment, and so the air would have been thinner at higher altitudes which would have caused icing, and lift problems. After the GC the light holes were shown to be able to be passed through by the airships, which means that whatever was keeping them sealed was broken open. If this was the case, then air from Aqua Magna would have simply sunk down through the eye holes and thus the "upper atmosphere" of Metru Nui's dome would have possibly come close to equalizing with Aqua Magna's air, and thus it was thick enough to fly through for the air ships. I could have been like a waterfall of denser warmer air or something. Thoughts?
  3. Does anyone have a quote or source stating that the Matoran knew that the sky "ended" and that there was a top to the dome. As far as I know, they knew about the great barrier, and likely the edges of the other domes but could have just thought that they were really tall cliffs which faded into the haze in the sky. We know that they obviously couldn't see the tops of the domes because of the atmosphere inside of the dome, so the only way to see that there was metal along the roof of the dome would be to fly all the way up there, and given that we don't know that sizes of the domes and their height measurements, the tops of the domes could have simply been beyond the flight ceiling of any technology that the Matoran had. Most planes in our world today can't go over 5-7 miles at most, and given the size of the domes, its not unreasonable to think that they could have extended 100s of miles high, which could easily mean that nothing could fly at that altitude.
  4. Before everything got lost, I saw in a quote from Greg that all the inhabitants of the universe would lose the ability to create. Now I don't know if that more specifically means innovate new inventions, or simply putting things together that they already know how to make.
  5. Yup I agree. Then again, go and look at the scene in LoMN where Matau is shapeshifted into the Vahki and attacks Whenua. If the form was only illusionary then Matau wouldn't be able to attack him using the weapons and arms of the illusion. I don't think the story team really thought this one out very well...
  6. The mask is named illusions, yes, but like Katuko said, this is more of a loose interpretation of the mask's powers than a definition. For instance, the mask of concealment is not called the mask of invisibility despite this being a more accurate description. The masks seem to be given the coolest sounding name, rather than the most accurate. So no, the Mahiki can project hologram like images, which are physically projected and not in the target's head. This makes it easier on the user because they have to project one illusion, not several for every target. This would also allow the mask to work on machines and security cameras because there is a real image for them to see. The question that remains, however, is the nature of the "shapeshifting." I tend to learn more towards the idea of an illusion being projected over the user's body rather than them physically changing, and Greg has supported this. This quote from Web of Shadows also seems to imply illusion over real shapeshifting: "The Toa of Air put the delay to good use, using his Mask of Illusion to take on the appearance of the Lohrak." I think that the story team went with the word "shapeshifting" because it was the simplest way to describe the mask's power. For any head canon of fan fic purposes, I would say to create a separate mask of shapeshifting. Keep in mind that there is also Miserix's mask of mutation, which can achieve a similar function on someone else.
  7. D': NO GREG NO D: Ah well...that answers most questions...But that would be so weird, so do you basically hologram yourself into a different form...What if you turn into someone who has long arms and you don't...and then you have to pick something up...How would that work? Well to answer that question, there would just be a hologram projected around your body so it could make your arms seem longer for example, or you could even just project what is behind you to appear invisible I would think. Like I said though, I'm pretty sure that on other occasions Greg had told people via PMs that the user COULD actually physically shape shift. Unfortunately with the deletion of the archives and older threads, we can't find any of those quotes. Anyways, how I interpret the shapeshifting part is that the user simply projects an illusion over themselves or around themselves. In this case though, I don't see why a user of a noble Mahiki couldn't still do this. One of Bionicle's remaining mysteries...
  8. I've got an old quote from Greg from June of 2010 about this because there was some debate going on at the time about the Mask of Illusion. Unfortunately it seems that Greg gave differing responses for questions similar to this to different people, which made it a nightmare to sort out. Anyways, here are the questions and answers: 5)Does a great Mask of Illusion allow the user to physically shapeshift? I ask this because there has been some debate on whether it is a physical change or the user just cast an illusion of a different being over their own body. 5b) If it is indeed a physical and actually shapeshift, does that mean that if a user turned into a Nui-Rama or a Gukko, they would be able to actually fly? 5c) And lastly, does a being have to shapeshift into an already existing creature or being, or could they be creative and just shapeshift a specific part of themselves? Like could a wearer shapeshift so that they have wings that could fly? 5) If it allowed them to physically shapeshift, it would not be a mask of illusion. If you are actually changing, where's the illusion? To do what you suggest, it would be a mask of shapeshifting, not illusion. So this kinda blew a big hole in everything that I thought we had been told about this mask, because we had been told, including by Greg I believe, that the user does indeed physically shape shift. Take this quote how you will, maybe Greg was just having a bad day and wanted to mess with us.
  9. Hey guys, sorry I didn't post this earlier, but I actually have an old quote from Greg in response to a question that I asked him about this way back in May of 2010. 2a) If all of the other domes besides the one that houses Metru Nui are lit by lightstones in the tops of the domes, do they have day and night cycles, or are they in a perpetual state of light? 2b) If they do indeed have night inside of the other domes, do they have stars at night, or do the lightstones simply dim? I ask this because the “stars” in Metru Nui are said to be Mata Nui’s thoughts. 2c) Also is there just a single massive lightstone in each dome to simulate the sun, or are there a bunch that simply make it very bright without a visible sun? 2) They do have day and night cycles, it works the same way dimmers work in our world 2b) It may well be that when the lightstones are dimmed, they resemble distant stars 2c) A bunch So there you have an old answer to this question. Unfortunately he didn't real elaborate on whether there appeared to be a sun or not. He said that there were a lot of lightstones to simulate day, but he didn't say whether there was a particular bright spot (or sun) in the sky. Too bad, I should have asked he to elaborate on this. My guess though, is that there would be a sun, for practical purposes like navigating and telling time within the domes.
  10. When I say that Plasma is more offensive than Air for example, I don't mean that there are no defensive uses for Plasma, like a shield or wall, but it is much more direct. Air for example, can attack, and defend, but in a less direct way. And while Plasma can defend, it is much less capable at it. Also you mentioned incinerating projectiles coming towards a Toa of Plasma, but how often are you able to hit an arrow or zamor sphere coming at you by throwing a baseball at it? And I don't think a Plasma Toa could heat up the launcher so that an enemy dropped it. If you hit it with plasma, it would incinerate the thing and possible harm the wielder as well. Like other have said, Fire could achieve this effect much easier.
  11. I sorta view Plasma as being a completely offensive power whereas Fire (while being one of the most offensively oriented), is a little more neutral than Plasma. Powers such as Water and Air have a lot less offensive capabilities, but this doesn't make them any "weaker" than, say, Fire for instance. There are advantages to being defensive as well as offensive, and Plasma offers very little in this field. This is not to say that Fire necessarily does, but like many other people have pointed out, Fire has more of a subtlety to it that can be advantageous. I mean we have lasers in real life that are used for things such as some surgeries and precise cutting, but in our world there are still just as many uses for fire that are not made obsolete by the use of plasma or lasers. Also on a side note, I've always thought that Plasma probably has a few light related powers, which could be one of its few defensive abilities, such as creating a blinding flash of plasma energy that would stun and temporarily blind enemies. Just a thought that I had.
  12. So you're thinking that VN actually came out through that port? The problem with that is that that special staff sealed up the hole, prior to the Ignika being sent out. You could get around this by saying the port itself was closed at the time and damaged. It's true that a massive burst of energy was expelled in the Great Cataclysm as you say. And I do remember this theory and it's a good one, but on the other hand, maybe having a power core blowing away energy for no constructive purpose wouldn't be too smart. Still, it could be just a contingency in case of an overload, and in general any contingency theory with the GBs is probably true lol. Now you've got me really curious about this because it's just occurred to me that if VN blasted through the closed port (assuming it was big enough to let a tiny island through, not just a mask), it would go a long, long way toward explaining how VN wasn't just smashed to pieces against the ceiling. A door is usually the weakest point in any barrier, even if closed and locked, as has been seen from the middle ages with castle gates to modern police going for the door first if they must break in a house. This theory would really help my story now that I think about it, although I still think I'll leave it vague and appeal instead to the Ignika making sure it was unusually strong at the time. The way I imagined it, the hatch may have been partway opened and then Voya Nui and the blast hit it to that it destroyed part of it, but not the entire thing, that way we have minimal damage to Voya Nui, but also the broken part that needs to be fixed by the staff of Artakha. Yeah, that image I made a few years ago and at the time I had thought Greg said that it was bigger than the SC. You can also see at the time that I had the SC in its own dome. But yeah, I changed it so that Karda Nui's dome is about the same size as the SC so it fits nicely under it without needing extra room. Whose map are you referring to? DLB's? It's actually still too large in the link reffed above in this post. It's pretty simple to imagine based on volume and the like that a hole anywhere near big enough to see more than a dot on a map would fill KN up in just a few months to years. VN is apparently just a tiny islet (probably why it only had one small village on it). Width-wise, anyways. Yup, again, older image, my new one doesn't even have Voya Nui on the map because it blends in with the surrounding geography, but on the ocean layer where it is floating with Mata Nui, I have it about the size of the Voya Nui on Faber's concept map, so it's even smaller than Metru Nui. I was actually JUST thinking about this the other day! And the conclusion that I came to is this:http://wikitravel.org/upload/shared//thumb/2/2c/CapeCodTowns.jpg/400px-CapeCodTowns.jpg I think of it as more of a canal like the one that separate's Cape Cod from the rest of the state. It's really not that wide across or deep, but there is not really a discernible current on the surface and boats can travel either way on it. I imagine it being the same way for the Tren Krom river, which would actually make it an extremely efficient option of travel for the Matoran if they could sail both ways on it to trade across the continent. It might have slight currents going in opposite directions splitting down the center of the continent or something like that, but I think it would be cool that way...
  13. I'm just gonna number my responses to your points since I'm not really good at using the whole quoting system on this site. 1) I honestly wouldn't read too much into the images of the great spirit robot because as we have easily seen between the various artist styles and particularly with the artist during 06-08, there can be large discrepancies in the artwork. I would most go based on the GCI images of the robot and that one concept piece that you used for your map, since several people on a team worked to design how it looked, and not just one artist. 2) On the note of Greg accidentally cannonizing that the SC was in the pelvis doesn't make sense to me. We all know that Greg has made errors in his books before which he came onto this site to clarify. Unfortunately in the case of the Toa of Plant Life though for some reason he had to stick with them being male since he had a typo in a book. My point is though, if he accidentally cannonized something, that shows that he didn't mean to, and his intent is what we should take into consideration, the line of thought behind it. 3) As for the legs, yeah I know, it's something that's been nagging me. I made this map long before we had the really nice easy to see robot from Faber, and so I thought that there was more room in the hips for a dome that could contain those four islands. I've considered making the hip really only a junction where the tunnels going through the stomach tubes of the robot split off to go down each leg, but of course this would require a lot of work in photoshop to correct it, and it's not really something that I want to do right now. 4) And once again with the chest dome, yeah it's something that's been nagging me. My first attempt at a map I tried to make each island and continent in a dome, but I was nowhere near as successful as you and it looked like a garbled mess. Trying to put the SC in it's own dome really doesn't work because of the location of the NC and especially the pan handle that juts out from it. If I shrink down the SC then it might work, but at this point I kinda like having all the extra ocean space that is provided by having one whole dome, plus I'm not really too worried about structural integrity and the physics of it because I figure the GBs could find a way to make it work. I mean the domes probably aren't that tall compared to the rest of the robot, so they probably don't comprise the structure much. Phones and a lot of other things are hollow on the inside but they still manage to stay intact, so not something I've thought about much, you do have a point though. 5) I don't understand what you're saying about Zakaz, it's supposed to be near the throat which is Karzanhi to keep people from getting to the realm, this is something that Greg strongly hinted at in the old answers topic when people asked about it. He basically answered something along the line of, Zakaz was made so hostile for the purpose of keeping things away from that region, which makes sense to me. But I also know that Spiriah supposedly messed up and didn't mean to make the Skakdi so hostile and destroy Zakaz, so I don't know... But also with Pridak's quote, I wouldn't think too much into it, he could have just said that because Xia is one of the best know islands, he could have said the northern continent too. 6) Yeah about the amount of area allocated between the domes and the edge of the robot shell, I know. That's another thing that's been nagging me but if I added more room or shrunk the domes a bit it would mess up the resolution of everything. Also actually, you know those tubes that run along the robot's shoulders, that would essentially fulfill the same role as the trapezius muscle, those actually have a gap between them and the robot's chest, so that would actually cut down even more on that area, so if I overlay the robot's exterior over the domes, part of the NC and Xia are actually not inside the robot. This is a bigger pain in the rear end to deal with though because I would need to reconfigure most of the central dome. 7) As for the islands in the hands, this is something that I considered and originally had them in the forearm as well, but looked at the official map, you'll notice that Tren Krom's island is more to the right of the other islands in the chain so that it doesn't line up with them. I always thought this was a way of showing that it was in the hand, and that in this image the hand was sorta curled in towards the body. Plus it would make sense why his island was never found since it was so much further away from the next to last island in the chain, the domes for the hands should definitely be smaller thought to allow more room. 8) On Karzahni, I thought that Greg had stated that it was definitely in the neck. Yeah I know that it was states to have a peninsula jutting out into the Metru Nui dome, and I originally did have it like that, but it got cut out when I changed the domes, so that's probably something that I could easily change in a matter of minute by just rotating the layer a bit. My one problem, is that the top point of the island isn't centered and is off to the left, so I would have to rotate it, but that's not that big of a deal if it's the only way it works. 9) On ignoring the canon details. The way I always think about it, is that Greg always said he thinks in words and not pictures, so we can move things around a bit to make more sense of his words, and when you have an entire team of people working on this project there are bound to be discrepancies, so I don't really view it as ignoring cannon facts, but more of just trying to sort everything out and make the most sense of all the information that we have. 10) I'm not sure where, but I could have sworn that Greg has said that KD is in the robot's chest. Honestly, I really would count the official map as the least cannon, as backwards thinking as that sounds. We have so many better pieces of art that seem to do a better job. I also made a threat with an entire theory about this a long time ago. http://s278.photobucket.com/user/DarkLordBane154/media/DiagramJPEG.jpg.html?sort=6&o=1 Basically the theory was that the codrex would sometimes need to blow off energy, which it did by shooting straight through the robot. The energy would go straight up and through Voya Nui and mount valmai, which is why it's there, and then the hole that we see the Mask of Life come out of. When the robot crashed a massive burst of energy was expelled and it blasted the entire region of Voya Nui out of the hole which was opened, which explains why the surface of Voya Nui managed to not get very destroyed, and why Voya Nui itself rocketed out of the robot. Basically though, this is further evidence to support the position of the continent, although your theory works too. Also I would like to point out that we already know that the size of Voya Nui on the official map is way too big, so right there off the bat we know that there are inaccuracies about the map. My idea is that when that map was made, the SC was intended to be in the gut region of the robot, but it hadn't been planned that that region would be hollow at this point.
  14. http://s278.photobucket.com/user/DarkLordBane154/media/GreatSpirit.jpg.html?sort=6&o=0 Here is most current most up-to-date version of my map, I just uploaded it a few minutes ago. Basically when considering and making my map, I came to the conclusion that some things that Greg has said in the past and some depictions of the MU are just flat out wrong (for my intents and purposes). I wanted to be as cannon as possible, but also make the most sense, so when I had to, I took my own ideas into consideration, like the placement and sizes of the islands for example. I also added several small islands just for storyline and practical purposes, such as the island of the southwest coast of Metru Nui where Toa Naho is said to have swam to for aid. I also added the small wooded island off the coast of the Southern Continent where Botar dropped the weapons. Some of the islands I also added just because I wanted a small island there, and I added four islands in the stomach area tube that connects the torso with the pelvis. This was done because I felt that in order to travel across that great distance, which looks to be about 6-7 hundred miles, boats would need a place to resupply, especially since the Matoran aren't seen to have big sailing ships like we had to cross the Atlantic. I tried to make this map make as much sense as possible, even including geography and what not. I have the file made in photoshop and I have a ton of different layers that I can turn on an off to peel away parts of the MU to see places such as Karda Nui, the seabed, and the robot above and Mata Nui. I also have a ton of detail inside of the universe like zones of control for the Barraki and the Makuta, as well as markers to designate where each individual village and city is as well as fortresses and even most recently I made a detailed diagram of all trade routes throughout the universe and where the ports are on each island. It's all very cool and it's something that I've been added to gradual over the course of several years. I always look for new features to add to it, so suggestions are always welcome. I've also most recently made a more accurate 3D looking layers of the robot itself as well as my completely own designed prototype robot that looks about as good as the 3D render of the Mata Nui robot that you used for your own map. Edit: I also agreed with some of the things that ToaTapio Nuva said. To me the faber artwork clearly showcases that the SC and Karda Nui were meant to be in the chest, like a real heart, and virtually everything that Greg has said has supported that. In my opinion, the "official" map of the MU has to be taken with a grain of salt, because I think it was made without much consideration, or without knowledge that there was a huge gaping hollow region in the stomach area. So basically I moved mine around so that everything made the most sense, and I combined the map that we were given with what information we have been given about the universe plus what initial artwork we have seen which was made by a professional artist. Essentially I tried to balance out everything equally with how it should be, how it was intended to be, and the little map that we actually got.
  15. I thought you could see the giant whirlpool in some of the comics when Voya Nui is sinking back down. Anyways, I personally think it makes the most sense for the Southern Continent to be in the torso, but other than that, I like how you divided up the domes and islands. In my map I initially tried a dome for every island but I didn't like the way it turned out so I just combined several domes for each body part basically, so kudos to you for finding a way to make it geometrically look good and make sense.
  16. Faber+Files_2001-2008.jpg Unfortunately, this image is probably the biggest point of contention for your map regarding the Southern Continent placement. This clearly shows the giant whirlpool which fed directly into Karda Nui and through the Southern Continent as being in the upper torso, and not in the hip region. I know that trying to actually fit all of the islands into the shape of the robot is a giant pain, I've made a map of my own and I had to take serious "artistic license" to make it work.
  17. Considering the size of Spherus Magna, yeah, that'd make sense. Yeah that's what I would say but it's never been confirmed. And by the way, Jupiter actually only has a day of about 10 hours and is the fastest rotating planet in the solar system, but I get what you're saying. Mercury is the fastest planet. It's over there by the sun. Jupiter is the big planet in the solar system. Mercury has the fastest orbit, but Jupiter has the fastest revolutions.Anyhow, here's something for consideration: relativity. Assuming Mata Nui was approaching the speed of light at any point (reasonable seeing as he visited several different solar systems), the MU'd have to have something to speed up its interior time if it ended up the same as SM time. In other words, a "day" really could have 36 hours from the perspective of the MU inhabitants, while an SM day might be the same time objectively (from outside the MU) but less subjectively (from within the MU).Okay just to clear up any confusion, planets orbit the sun by revolving around it, hence the revolution, which is the amount of time is takes to complete a circle around the sun, or a year. A rotation is a planet spinning on its axis, in other words, a day. Mercury might revolve around the sun the quickest out of all the planets, and thus have the shortest year and the fastest revolution, but Jupiter is spinning on its own axis the quickest, making it have the shortest day. A planet being larger in size does not mean that is spins slower, because all planets do not rotate at the same speed as the earth.
  18. Considering the size of Spherus Magna, yeah, that'd make sense. Yeah that's what I would say but it's never been confirmed. And by the way, Jupiter actually only has a day of about 10 hours and is the fastest rotating planet in the solar system, but I get what you're saying.
  19. Well it has been stated that there are 36 hours in the Matoran Universe so likely also on Spherus Magna. The only problem though, is that we never established if they were full 60 minute hours that are the same length as hours, and thus a Bionicle day equals a day and a half of our time, or if they simply divided the day up into 36 hours rather than 24, but it is still the same length.
  20. I always just thought it was weird that Metru Nui could be so advanced while other Matoran on the Southern Continent and other small islands were just living in small tropical villages in the forests or wherever.
  21. I have always wondered whether the majority of the islands in Matoran Universe on the inside looked more like Mata Nui or industrial style of Metru Nui. Any thoughts?
  22. I also imagine a toa of stone as being able to throw a rock on the air and then jump off it onto the next one that they throw. That way they would only be jumping off of rocks that they already threw and wouldn't be actively holding them while touching them. Does this seem plausible?
  23. I don't have the quote but this is actually something that I asked Greg about a year ago. I asked if there were Skakdi of other elements such as lightning and he said yes. I didn't ask about light and shadow though, but I would assume that there aren't. I got this from Greg on May 4, 2010.
  24. I didn't view Tuyet as shooting water downwards, but simply floating waist-high in a column of water. Imagine just floating in a pool of water but take away the concrete edges of the pool so that the water is suspended in the air. You would still be able to swim around at the top of the water rather than falling to the bottom. Anyways, that's just how I thought it would work.
  25. Well, Greg also has to get prefixes approved, and I guess this is one of the last BIONICLE prefixes he got approved.I don't think so in the case of prefixes like this just for the online community. As long as it won't be featured in any more official Lego material (which isn't likely), then I believe that he can give us simple prefixes, I could be mistaken though.
