  1. Well, there goes that lead. Lhii's death story was known of before the encyclopedia came out though, that's for certain. I remember knowing about it way before that. Maybe there was a Bionicle.com update that added that information to Jaller's bio or something?

  2. The original source is Jala's bio page from the 2001 website. It's no longer readable as it was originally presented but you can still find the text by viewing the page source:

"Jala's athletic ability and no-nonsense manner make him the obvious choice to stand at Vakama's right hand. As captain of the guard, it's his job to protect their village of Ta-Koro and organize its warriors. The founder of Jala's clan, Lhii, was once the greatest surfer Mata Nui has known since Tahu last walked upon the land. Jala has much to live up to, but he is dedicated and works hard."

That's a very interesting find, thank you for sharing it. Like Pereki already said, it's interesting how this text indicates that the Toa Mata had been on Mata Nui before. These kinds of implications don't exist in any other story material, so I wonder what the point was. Of course, the origin of the Toa Mata wasn't actually planned yet at that point, so maybe this is just the interpretation of some guy at Lego?

Cool, that at least resolves the question of how far back Lhii was introduced, but there's still a question of where the other details on BS01 came from. Specifically, they say Lhii was an all yellow villager with a pakari who died lavasurfing.

Since the Lexicon seems to be the second time Lhii was mentioned, perhaps those tidbits were revealed there?

IIRC its first mention was in the original Bionicle lexicon from the Bionicle website. I don't remember if it ever was mentioned in the context of any actual fiction, though.

You mean the 2001 website (or at least-2004)? That'd be weird... it would mean the name for the character "Lhikan" actually came from some trivial detail. I assumed that it was the other way around.

Well, the character of Lhikan was planned from the beginning, so their names were probably created at the same time as well.

  3. So, this question has been bugging me for a long time, and I haven't been able to find an answer. Where does the well-known legend about Lhii (made up by the Turaga of Mata Nui to uphold the legacy of Lhikan without revealing his existence) originate from? Not story-wise, but rather when and where it was presented to the fandom.

This source says that the story was already known of and circulating in 2001, and I personally also recall knowing of it very early on in the story. It was also used in some fan fiction stories like Time Disruption by Xccj way back in 2003/2004. Biosector01 talks about the legend, but doesn't specify any sources or where it was released. I don't remember the story being told on Bionicle.com or any other form of media, so I'm quite confused as to where it came from.

I'd leave out the serials, plain and simple. They really didn't have any sort of necessary contribution to the story, and didn't even execute the world-building aspect that well. Instead, they just created loose ends and plot holes. Getting rid of them wouldn't affect the main story at all.

Oh, and definitely end it at 2008.

The serials were some of the most enjoyable reads though. While it's true they weren't at all pertinent to the actual main story arc, I'd disagree with you and say they executed worldbuilding very well.

I'll agree that some serials did it better than others. Federation of Fear, the Mutran Chronicles and Dreams of Destruction all managed to tell a relatively cohesive story and expand on the universe and lore. On the other hand, any world building in serials like Dark Mirror, Brothers in Arms and Reign of Shadows was ruined by making them about alternate universes, which meant convoluted, non-sensical plot points with no contribution to the universe we cared about. Destiny War had a lot of potential for world building, but many of its plot points were left unfinished due to Greg's lack of planning, meaning that they only served to make the story more confusing and less satisfying in general, due to a lack of payoff.

  5. When I first joined Bzpower, I just came up with Toatapio on the spot. Cause, you know, Toa + [insert real name here] makes for the perfect username on a Bionicle site, am I right?

Anyway, I created lots of stories with my friend about our self-made characters in the Bionicle world, mine being a Matoran named Tapio. At some point in these stories, he became a Toa, justifying the "Toa"-part in my username. He later became a Matoran again, but fell into Energized Protodermis and became a Matoran Nuva. That's when I changed my username to Toatapio Nuva, and I've used that name ever since, not the least cause my character didn't go through another transformation again.

I don't only use this name on Bzpower though - it's become my standard alter ego in many other places on the internet as well.

  7. I remember the comics forum warmly, as that's where I was inspired by Dark709 and other amazing artists to try my hand at comic making. I learned a lot about editing pictures and using graphical programs.

I also remember really enjoying the set reviews, and often read them before buying a particular set myself.

More recently, the bzprpg carries lots of memories, especially the old one before the dataclysm, but also the renewed version.

  8. This is a nice little film, definitely worth watching. The dialogue was a bit difficult to hear in the first scene where it's actually used, and the names are a bit too generic (Icemask and Purplemask), but I don't really have other gripes besides those. Nicely done.

  9. I am in fact updating some of the maps with custom tilesets, but since I'm not much of an artist, I won't be making my own.

Ah, ok. So you have someone helping you out, making tilesets for your game?

No, but it would be very helpful. At the moment I'm using ones from the internet that are free for non-commercial use.

  10. I assume you'll be updating the tilesets and system graphics to something custom rather than using default RPG Maker resources? Perhaps something inspired by MNOG? Or VNOG?

I am in fact updating some of the maps with custom tilesets, but since I'm not much of an artist, I won't be making my own.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but the Kane-Ra pic in the screenshots is one of NickonAquaMagna's:  http://nickinamerica.deviantart.com/art/BB-Kane-Ra-color-ref-197319391

I just want to know, did you get permission from him to use it?  If not you should probably clear that up now.

He gave me permission to use it.

  11. So, I've finally got the game to a stage where it's fully playable from beginning to end. It's still a demo, but there's now a lot more to do, including collecting all the different masks and using them, and more.

The download link has been updated with the new version. Be sure to try it out!

  12.

It's basically because they're hidden islands. Thus they can't stand in the very center of a dome that must be sailed through to get to other islands, because if they did, then everyone sailing to those islands would know of their existence. And remember, the Brotherhood was actively seeking out both Artakha and Odina; Daxia is another story, but I still don't see how it could just be off the coast of the Southern Continent without anyone finding it. In other words, I think it is indispensable for Artakha, Odina and Daxia to have their own dome, which must be isolated from the rest of the universe, not open for passage.

Karzahni also has remained isolated for hundreds of thousands of years. While in that case the landscape might be a factor (the realm is contained within a canyon, which might be hard to reach without following the route the future Toa Inika took), it seems odd that a land that has been virtually forgotten, except in legends, should be situated at the center of the main tunnel leading away from Metru Nui, which must inevitably be a major trade route, given the importance of the City of Legends.

I've honestly half wondered if any attempts to locate Artakha were thwarted by security measures left behind by Kojol and created by Artakha since the invasion; it wouldn't be too surprising if similar defenses existed for Odina and Daxia. With regards to Karzahni, I think most of the legends surrounding it are probably Matoran based and probably either come from Metru Nui-who never had a need to send anyone there-or various regions that had no contact with it. The quest of the future Inika made it seem like the overland route was the only way of reaching it, but it's notable that other parties-such as Naho and later the Dark Hunters-were apparently able to bypass Karzahni with little to no difficulty.

With regards to Artakha, do we know if any of the other islands in that "arm" were actually commonly visited? The only location we know of there is Tren Krom's island, which was also a well-hidden place, so I don't think Artakha would need to be in a different spot than it already is. Furthermore, I imagine it wouldn't necessarily be that difficult to cloak the island with the superior technology they have there, and boats going further into the arm would just pass by Artakha.

I would apply the same reasoning to Odina, since the other islands in that chain are also not that well-known. The only problem with this would be Nynrah, which was commonly visited by the Makuta, so if they were also trying to find Odina, it wouldn't make sense to know of Nynrah but not that island. This depends on the level of contact with Nynrah though.

With Daxia you are probably right, and it would make sense for it to have its own dome, since the central dome is so enormous anyway. Plus, the Southern Continent was very central and probably widely populated, meaning that it would be a bad idea to build a top secret base right next to it.

With Karzahni, I always imagined that only the two sea gates on either side of the "neck" were used, and that the central one was deemed too dangerous for travel. That would allow Karzahni to stay hidden, though it does create the problem of there being only two sea gates. Then again, nowhere in the story is it specified how many there have to be, so two of them may already be enough. All we know is that there are supposed to be more than one.

  13. I'm sure I've seen that map before as well, but I had completely forgotten about it. You're right, it's quite good. Still, it doesn't solve several problems I highlighted in the first post, namely the size of Xia, Odina and Destral (I think they're too big compared to Metru Nui) and the position of Artakha, Odina, Daxia, Karzahni (which is situated in the middle of the main Metru Nui sea gate, which doesn't seem likely at all) and Tren Krom's island. It does do a better job than mine at positioning the continents, though at the cost of considerably shrinking them.

I agree with you on the sizes, but I don't see how any of the positions are problematic (aside from Karda Nui being underneath the Southern Continent, obviously). With Karzahni, for example, why couldn't it be where it is depicted? That part of the robot is quite large, and the gates themselves may only be at each end of the large tunnel.

  15. I know this topic is ancient at this point, but I just released a massive amount of updates on this. I had a lot of Crazy Chronicles project that I never released to the public, but now I've uploaded many of them on youtube, such as all the Bohrok Online Animations and many comics. Also, I was finally able to release Bionicle 3: Web of Curry. I hope they will bring at least some entertainment to original and new fans of the Crazy Chronicles series.
