I will be very surprised at the person who knows what the acronyms O.K. and "tip" (as in, "a five-dollar tip") stand for.

Actually, they are. I'll give up one, just for your trouble: O.K. is short for "of knowledge," is what my teacher explained. As in, "'Let's go see a movie today.' 'I'm of knowledge of our plans.'" I'm not sure how we warped the meaning so much to mean positive/negative and such.

Our Chinese teacher, who is not that good with English, made us laugh today when she gave up on trying to pronounce "meteorologist."
