I just thought of something today. As certain technologies, like text to speech and dictation programs, get more advanced, will our society someday evolve beyond the need for literacy? What do we even use literacy for these days anyway?

    -Reading signs.
    -Sending letters and emails.
-Reading and writing books, articles, magazines, etc.
    -Chatting online.

As computers become more and more advanced, a lot what is written could instead be dictated to a computer, which would then filter out the stuttering, pauses, and mistakes and turn it into a more polished version which could then be transmitted to other computers that would play the message. For signs, autonavigation systems in your cars or hovercrafts would be doing all the driving anyway, so you wouldn't have to worry. When chatting with multiple people at once, a feed of various sound bites appears, which you can select one at a time to prevent everyone from talking at once as well as offering you the option to replay their messages.

Am I missing something or could this be our next technological leap?

I think that a good sign for anyone working on anything that's intended to be funny is when you can look at your own work and laugh. This was the case with BIONICLE Under 2 Minutes and it is is the case with the project I started today.

Why am I making this entry? To tease you and to maybe make some sort of virtual monument to force myself to stop procrastinating on this.

Here are a few vague tidbits of information:

It will be funny. It will be made in Flash. It's not a PSA. It's not another X in Y minutes. It has nothing to do with BIONICLE. Let the speculation/frustrated groaning commence!

Okay, so sometimes I'm pretty bad with updating my Message of the Fortnight, but the last I updated this current one was about six weeks ago. Well, the thing about that is that I'm currently in a period of transition with my Flash. I've ordered a copy of Flash CS4 (the latest version) and it's supposed to arrive at the end of October, but until such time, I'm afraid things are at a bit of a standstill. As for my old version of Flash, that's living on a virus-ridden computer several kilometres away from where I'm living now -- plus, it was a trial version, so it's not too much of a loss.

When I get my version of the brand new Flash, though, expect the unveiling a new secret project.

    So I was procrastinating today.

"Whoa, SPIRIT was procrastinating? Stop the presses!"

So I decided to see what this whole Twitter craze was about and went to check out the site. On the main page, they've got like this search bar, so I thought to myself, hey, why don't I see if people are tweeting about BIONICLE?

So I search for some random BIONICLE words and while I'm sifting through the results when I come upon a series of... just weird tweets. I don't know if this is a prank or some promotion by LEGO... but it's just... weird...
    [twitter=10]_Tahu[/twitter]
So yeah, here is the guy's profile. There's also a bunch of other accounts he's following that seem to be doing the same sort of thing.

Has anyone else seen this? I don't even know what to say about it...

Not too much activity on the last follow up, but oh well. I'll just leave post-counts and proto alone for now unless someone gets some really good ideas. Now, however, onto the fun part.

So we've seen the map, we have a general idea of how things work, now let's get a better picture of each of the individual forums. To recap, the forums have been given their elements for the following reasons:

Fire: Bionicle Collectibles -- Ta-Matoran make masks.
Fire: LEGO Bionicle Sets -- Ta-Matoran make the parts for things like Vahki, etc.

Water: New Member Q&A -- Ga-Matoran are teachers.
Water: General Discussion -- Ga-Matoran talk a lot? (Kind of grasping at straws here. )

    Stone: Buy/Sell/Trade -- Po-Koro had a thriving marketplace in MNOLG1
Stone: Marketplace Banter -- (See above.)

Ice: Bionicle Storyline & Theories -- Ko-Matoran ponder the future.
Ice: Voting Booth -- Ko-Matoran use information they collect to extrapolate the future (also a bit of a stretch).

Air: Comedies -- Le-Matoran joke around.
Air: Bionicle Artwork III: Bionicle Comics -- (See above).

Earth: Bionicle Reference Center -- Onu-Matoran archive things and study the past.
Earth: Bionicle Movies & Books -- The tales told in the movies and books are about the past, which interests the Onu-Matoran.

Light: BZP Reference Desk -- Nothing more bright and painful to the eyes than a bunch of rules (also, it's like the "ultimate" element).
Light: BZPower.com News Discussion -- Shines a light into the darkness of ignorance (once again, mostly because it'd be unfair to give another forum Light).

Plasma: Completely Off Topic -- Plasma is full of energy and all over the place, just like COT.
Plasma: Bionicle Games & Trivia -- Once again, full of energy

Magnetism: Bionicle Software -- Information is often stored magnetically.
Magnetism: Fan-Made Games -- (See above.)

Plant Life: Bionicle Artwork I: General Art -- Plant Life is serene, graceful, and beautiful, just like artwork.
Plant Life: Bionicle Promotions -- Plants also try to spread themselves everywhere, which is what Promotions are for.

Gravity: LEGO General Discussion -- Gravity is things being held together, like LEGO sets.
Gravity: Bionicle Artwork II: Shops & Kits -- The various sprites and banners are also things that are being held together.

Iron: Bionicle Based Creations -- BIONICLE creatures are metallic and Fe-Matoran are industrious, building many things.
Iron: BBC Contest Voting -- (See above.)

Sonics: Epics -- De-Matoran like the quiet, making it easier for them to read.
Sonics: Short Stories -- (See above.)

Lightning: Bionicle RPG -- Nikila, the only Toa of Lightning we've seen, was a strategist and Tahnok-Kal was said to be the fiercest of the Bohrok-Kal. Sounds like an RPG player to me.
Lightning: RPG Contest Voting -- (See above).

Also, here is the map so you can see where each forum is roughly.

What I want from you is a small bio on each of the forums. Maybe a paragraph or so detailing scenery, lifestyle, and maybe a brief history if you want. You can submit as many as you want and we'll vote on the best in the next entry.

I'll get you started with the island of Hapori Nui.

BZP Reference Desk: Built on the remains of the ancient village of BZ-Koro, where the earliest colonists once lived, this region has since become the capitol of the BZ Nui archipelago. After the denizens branched out to the surrounding islands, the island was used as a central hub for maintaining order between the early settlements. Now a shining golden fortress stands there in whose many rooms the staff spend their leisure time, conduct official business, and where proclamations are made to the people of BZ Nui.

New Member Q&A: An entire coastline filled with schools to educate newer (and sometimes older) members on the workings of the site. Situated near to the official list of rules, it isn't difficult for students to quickly learn everything they need to know about membership. It is often frequented by experienced members and staff, especially Forum Mentors, to pass on their knowledge of the site.

Well folks, I've had a nice long run posting on BZPower.com, but now that I've reached 9999 posts, I think it's time for me to retire from posting in the main forums and start a prosperous career of posting in New Member Q&A, Bionicle Artwork II: Shops & Kits, Bionicle Games & Trivia, BZP Voting Booth, Completely Off Topic, and blogs.

My house has once again been invaded by mice.

The last time was nearly nine years ago, but it seems they've been spending all that time figuring out how to get back in. Last time, they weren't too smart, running out in front of the TV and leaving obvious signs of their presence. These ones, however, are much more clever. They've so far stayed in a storage room, living off of forgotten Easter chocolate, but my keen hearing picked up their rustling and they were discovered. My parents are getting traps tomorrow (the poisonous kind, I believe) so the problem should go away in a few days.

Let's just hope that this time the mice don't develop another appetite for plastic (my Playmobil ball and chain mace will never be the same ), especially given that my LEGO collection is much larger now. Too bad I don't have a Muaka or something to scare them off...
  8. SPIRIT
Unfortunately, this is the sort of idea I could never get away with, but maybe in posting it, someone slightly cleverer than me will be able to devise a way to profit from it.

Now, let me start off by saying that I don't get the appeal of professional sports. I just cannot bring myself to care who wins or who loses or follow a tournament at all in any sport. They're just people who are being paid an insane amount of money to play a game against another group of such people. Granted, they're really good at what they do, but I still am not entertained by you.

I don't want to knock professional sports, to each his or her own, but they're just not for me.

Where am I going with this?

In today's day and age, we can make images of things and people look very realistic. In a few years, you won't be able to tell the difference.

Why not remove the scandal-causing, money-wasting players and replace them with fictional constructions? All sports games could become well-animated movies and could become much more exciting with a crack team of writers to amp things up so that it comes down to the last second or the underdog comes from behind with a heroic victory. The entire multi-billion dollar sports industry could divide its money among just a few people who'd become insanely rich, now that you've removed the players from the equation.

Yes, it's against the spirit of the game and many people would be really unhappy about it, but the thing is, how do we know this hasn't already happened?
  9. SPIRIT
Stop it! Stop it now!

    To quote The Hobbit:

Not entirely what I'm getting at, but it's a good starting point at how vague our small talk is.

What really grinds my gears is when people use qualifying adjectives (e.g. good, nice, beautiful, gorgeous, splendid, miserable, terrible, etc.) to objectively describe the weather. What I'm saying is, what the heck is "good" weather and who decides this?!

Does it mean that the sun is shining, there are little or no clouds, there is no precipitation, the air temperature is greater than or equal to room temperature, and there is little or no wind? If so, then why not say that instead of acting as though your personal feelings about the weather are fact.

For instance, if someone truthfully says, "my, isn't it sunny today?", you'd be insane to say, "I disagree, I think it's raining," when you can both plainly see that it is not. However, if someone were to say, "my, isn't it gorgeous out today?" in the same scenario, they do not expect you to disagree when it is clearly warm and sunny out by saying, "I disagree, I find this sort of weather unappealing."

Who decided that bright sunshine, no wind, and warmth were "good" in terms of weather? Sure, I like being warm as much as the next guy, but I find overcast skies to be much more picturesque and nice to look at; I don't mind the wind, as long as it's not too cold outside -- it adds a real sense of power to nature, I find; as long as you don't have to shovel it, snow is fantastic to look at, the way it coats the countryside and how it looks when it's falling; and watching a lightning storm is just indescribable. So why is it that the sort of weather I like is considered not to be good?

Basically, what I'm saying is, think before you speak. Some people might not feel the same about weather that you do. Rather than saying "isn't is splendid weather we're having old bean, wot, wot?" try saying, "I think the sunshine looks beautiful today"; or rather than "this weather is simply ghastly," try, "this weather is not to my liking as the rain is getting me wet and the wind has rendered my umbrella ineffective".

    That is all.

Join us next time when SPIRIT gripes about people who say "supper" instead of "dinner".

So remember that mysterious project I mentioned that I needed Flash to begin. Well, I've got Flash again and I have a preview ready for you:

LINK (Yes, I'm aware some of the words jump. I'm too lazy to fix those, so just live with it for now.)

Now before you go using the emoticon, allow me to explain. Throughout the ages, the rough concept of a BIONICLE-like version of BZP has been tossed about from time to time. Epics have been written, comics have been sprited... But I have a vision for more. If there's a general liking of this idea, what I envision is a large scale project to combine various media into a "canon" for BZ Nui. Writing, drawing, animating, RPGing, you name it. Also, anyone will be allowed to bring forth ideas, making it a real community project.

So what do you say? Is it a good idea or the worst thing you've ever heard of?
  11. SPIRIT
Okay, I'm not exactly going to say how, but I've come across a sneak preview of the next part of Destiny War. This takes place right after Axonn and Brutaka fall into the green liquid and leads right into the next part of their mission.

    Here it is.

And accumulated over 1 300 steps to boot.

    In your face, Nintendo!

Which is more than I can say for my LEGO Harry Potter game, in which I've become trapped in a room with a white dragon with no escape (and I've done some Google searches that confirm this is a glitch). I hope TT releases a patch soon...

"Helloooooooo! Hola, velcomen, bienvenue, konichiwa, aloha, how you doin'?, yo, and in any language, welcome to LEGO Island!"

    *nostalgic sniffle*

    Ah, the good old days...

So I just figured out how to get the game working on my computer and oh the memories. It's actually a little startling how far graphics have come along since the 90s and laughable at how cutting edge this game once was. All the same, it's still loads of fun. Granted, I've lost some of my manoeuvring talent over the past decade, but I still managed to get a red or a blue in every race (and I remember when my whole score cube was red...).

I also got some of the jokes that just whipped over my head as a kid. Like Dr. Clickitt's comment about being on the golf course while I drive the ambulance and then wondering where the golf course actually is.

I saved the island from the Brickster too for like the billionth time. You'd think they'd have figured out pizza-resistant locks by now. I only lost a few buildings on that one and did considerably better than my early attempts way back in the day when stopping him was just beyond my arrow key pressing dexterity.

Now I have all the game music stuck in my head. Not that that's a bad thing, but it sure does bring back the memories...

Don't pull the fire alarm at 2:00 AM, for starters.

So for those of you who don't know, I started university this fall and am now living on residence. So far, it's been a lot of fun meeting new people and getting accustomed to the campus. What hasn't been fun was last night where someone thought that it would be funny to pull the fire alarm when everyone was asleep. We all got up, got some sweaters on, and headed outside into the cold for twenty minutes while firefighters arrived.

Seriously, if you really want to be funny, go make a PSA or something.

So turns out that in Pokémon, Ice Type is not super effective against Rock Type... It's been over a decade and I'm learning this today...

Fact 1: According to the US Census Bureau, there are approximately 2 deaths per second worldwide.

Fact 2: According to Mattel, 2 Barbie dolls are sold every second around the world.

    Draw your own conclusions.
  17. SPIRIT
Here is how I would take over the world.

Now, the problem with most world domination plans is that you have to be in charge of some sort of army or government. Since becoming a general is pretty risky and it's a real hassle to go through all the time and money required to successfully run for office, really the only way for anyone to easily rise to power over others is to become the chump husband of some monarch.

    Then I had a thought...

Oh! Wait a minute! Wait a minute! SPIRIT? What if you were the chump husband? Okay, you marry the princess, all right? Then, uh, you become sultan!

Marry the shrew? I become sultan... The idea has merit!

Yes, merit! Yes! And then we drop papa-in-law and the little woman off a cliff! YEAAAAAAAAAAAA Kersplat!

    Step 1: Marry the shrew

After the three Princes of Wales and the Duke of York, the next two people in line for the British crown are Princess Beatrice of York and Princess Eugenie of York, who are conveniently right around my age. All I have to do is bring one of them on board with my plan, marry her, and badaboom, I'm Prince Consort of York.

Step 2: Drop papa-in-law and the little woman off a cliff

All I have to do is plan an unfortunate "accident" for those ahead of us in line to become head monarch and then blame it on some terrorist group. If lacking a terrorist group, pull a Palpatine and make one up. After that, we'll be crowned Queen and King Consort of the British Commonwealth.

Step 3: Convince the senate to vote us emergency powers

Yep, pull another Palpatine and use the aforementioned terrorist group to convince the British parliament to return emergency powers to the monarchy. One way to do this would be to pool our collective wealth into raising a private army to combat the "threat". Soon we extend our military protection to other members of the commonwealth, gaining further control over such economic powerhouses as Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and particularly Pakistan and India. Using their combined economies, we could raise an army to dwarf that of the United States Armed Forces.

We would continue to expand our control over the world, guaranteeing them protection from the Droid Armies (or whatever) until we had managed to expand the Commonwealth to the entire planet. Then we announce that in order to ensure our security and continuing stability, the Commonwealth will be reorganized into the first Global Empire, for a safe and secure society which I will assure them will last for ten thousand years.

    Step 4: Laugh maniacally

And if none of that works, I guess tomorrow night I'll have to do the same thing I do every night: try to take over the world!
  18. SPIRIT
Alright, here are two things that have been bugging me lately in how people are speaking incorrectly.

    1) Know your past participles.

What is a past participle? That's the word that goes after the axillary (usually some form of the verb "to have") in tenses that describe the past.

For instance, "I have seen thousands of cars in my lifetime". The word "seen" is the past participle.

Some common slip ups I've noticed lately:

-To beat => I have beaten NOT I have beat
-To bite => I have bitten NOT I have bit

Now, this may be confusing because some verbs like "to hit" do not change (I have hit), so keep an eye out for these.

    2) Use the subjunctive when applicable.

The bane of most second language classes: the subjunctive mood. It isn't very common in English, but it is still something you need to look out for.

Basically, in English, we use 3 moods.

    1) Indicative: a simple statement or question. E.g. Bob goes to the store.
    2) Imperative: a command. E.g. Bob, go to the store!
    3) Subjunctive: a statement contrary to fact, a wish, or a mandative statement. E.g. I wish I were an Oscar Meyer wiener.

This is really only visible when using a singular subject with the verb "to be". It is incorrect to say "I wish I was an Oscar Meyer wiener" despite the fact that "was" usually refers to the singular subject, but in the indicative, you use the plural form of the verb, "were".

So yeah, follow those rules of speech and I won't go insane.
  19. SPIRIT
Alright, BZPower. I know I'm generally not a very serious guy, but there come times when the joking must stop. I come to you about a very serious issue that I believe everyone should be aware of.

A bonobo chimpanzee by the name of Kanzi has discovered many troubling things in the past few years. He can use sign language, recognize pictograms, make fire, cook food, make tools, use knives, and even play video games.

That's right, ladies and gentlemen. Throw out your zombie plans; the ape-ocalpse is coming! I've seen Planet of the Apes, unless we come up with plans to deal with this coming threat, we'll all be wild savages and zoo exhibits.

Now, assuming the apes don't figure out computers or written English, I should be safe posting my own Ape-ocalypse Plan here, but I will have a backup plan just in case. So here's my plan:

    1) Forget bribing them with bananas. Scientists say that the banana will go extinct in ten years -- it'd be suicide to rely on them!

    2) Apes are notorious for not being able to throw. The advantage we humans hold over the apes is that while apes are able to swing from tree to tree easier than us, we can throw much better than them. That being the case, we should destroy all our firearms and invest in throwing spears and atlatls. I, myself, will set up a private stockpile in the basement just in case.

    3) Since apes are tropical creatures, our only hope may be to retreat to the north, where we'll be safe unless they figure out how to use animal pelts for warmth. With my quiver of throwing spears and winter coat, I should be safe. If not, I can still use snowballs as weapons because, once again, apes can't throw.

    4) Humans have the most stamina for running out of any other creature -- as long as the apes don't figure out how to use our vehicles, I should be safe.

    5) My eventual plan will be to retreat to a remote ice floe in the Canadian north where I'll be safe to run guerrilla (yes, I realize the irony) attacks on the simian uprising, doing my part to gradually whittle down their numbers so that we can reclaim civilization (as you know, humans breed more often than apes).

So what are your Ape-ocalypse Plans? Let me know in the comments or post it in your own blog and give me a link.

    TOGETHER WE CAN SURVIVE!

Why, Dobby? WHY!?!?!?!?!? Your death was sadder than Moody, Burbage, Hedwig, Bathilda, Dumbledore, Sirius, and Cedric's deaths put together times a billion!

Also, they left out Phineas Nigellus, so how did Snape find them?
  22. SPIRIT
So, as most of you probably don't know, when Tahu killed all the Rahkshi in the last comic with the golden armour, he actually gained their powers. Now, according to Greg, not every type of Rahkshi would have been sent on the invasion of Bara Magna so he probably doesn't have all 42 powers, but if you were in charge of the storyline, which powers would you give Tahu, which ones would you not give him, and why? (For your convenience, here's my Flash Kraata Maker).

    So here's what I think:

Fear: Yes. Tahu seems like the kind of guy who would be fine with scaring his enemies away, plus the Fear Rahkshi was red.
Disintegration: No. This means of destruction is a bit too subtle for Tahu.
Poison: No way José. Rahkshi poison and Tahu do not mix well.
Fragmentation: Absolutely. I don't think Tahu would be satisfied if he didn't get the ability to make things blow up after his ordeal.
Hunger: Yes. I think Tahu would have no problem draining power from foes, especially since it's a fairly non-lethal way of beating them.
Anger: No, not unless he could use it on himself, lol.
Weather Control: No, this seems more like something a Toa of Water would use.
Elasticity: No, Tahu is a bit too proud to absorb hits like a cartoon character
Heat Vision: (He already has this one).
Illusion: Yeah, Tahu has been known to use trickery.
Teleportation: Yeah, I mean, the world's a big place, so how else is he going to get around?
Quick Healing: Yes, Tahu probably could've used this one eons ago.
Laser Vision: Yes, I mean, he has heat vision, so why not?
Gravity: Yes, Tahu could use it as a sort of telekinesis.
Electricity: Yes. We've seen Fire and Lightning with Jaller so why not with Tahu?
Sonics: No, doesn't seem like a Tahu power.
Vacuum: No, Fire doesn't do too well when it comes to vacuums.
Plasma: Yes, I mean, that would sort of get him back to his original power level, wouldn't it?
Magnetism: No, just doesn't fit with him.
Fire Resistance: No, he has this one innately anyway.
Ice Resistance: Yes, I think he'd get a real kick out of using this one against Kopaka.
Mind Reading: Yes. I mean, half the characters can already read minds anyway without any adequately explained reason as to why or how (I'm looking at you Takanuva and Gali) so I could see Tahu joining the club.
Shapeshifting: No, this one seems a bit much for a Toa.
Darkness: No way. Even if he did get this one, there's no way he'd use it.
Plant Control: Nah, unless he only used it to grow Madu Cabolo, I don't think this is really a power for a Toa of Fire.
Molecular Disruption: No. Once again, too subtle for Tahu's taste.
Chain Lightning: No, not if he gets Electricity. This one would just be too redundant and powerful.
Cyclone: Yes, I can just imagine the fire tornado he could make with this one.
Density Control: Yes, I think it'd be great to see Tahu just go intangible and be unable to be hit one moment and then become super-dense for an attack of his own the next.
Chameleon: Yes, while it's not quite the Huna he used to have, it'd still be good for sneaking around.
Accuracy: Yes, especially when Tahu gets really hotheaded he'd need this one.
Rahi Control: No. Seems like a slap to the face for 2001 if he got this one.
Insect Control: No, it's pretty much the same thing as Rahi control anyway.
Stasis Field: No, freezing things isn't Tahu's style.
Limited Invulnerability: No, this one's a bit much for a Toa.
Power Scream: Yes. Tahu likes to shoot his mouth off at times, so why not have him do it in style?
Dodge: Yes. Jaller sort of had this as a Toa Inika, and I can see Tahu using a similar strategy.
Silence: Yes, I imagine he'd also use this one to cheat and win in arguments by just silencing whomever he was arguing with.
Adaptation: No, seems a bit much for a Toa.
Slowness: Yes, largely this power would work like the Vahi, I think.
Confusion: No. Tahu's usually the confused one, he wouldn't need his enemies becoming confused too.
