I recently received a Bricklink order of Bionicle and Hero Factory parts. Among them I ordered black gears to replace the yellow gears on most of the Toa sets I own. (I own all six, but Gali's yellow gears make sense to me) I also ordered pieces to give lower arms to Protectors of Fire and Ice. Did you guys do these things? What little changes did you guys make, if any?

Well, since a couple others have been made, I figured I'd make my contribution by accounting for the baby Protector of Earth. View to the back A threat approaches! "Never fear, Pohatu is here!" So, yeah. Not much to it. But there he is. I just wish those short bone pieces existed in trans-purple. That would have looked much better.

So, the other day, my brother and I bought Kopaka, Pohatu, and the PoE, and this broght up a thought I'd had upon first seeing the new figures. Now, notice the coloration of some of the sets. We see the characters of Ice and Water having trans-blue limbs, the Stone characters having trans-lime, and the Protector of Fire having trans-red hands. Now, some of you may remember a theory back in the Glatorian Era which suggested that the Spherus Magna inhabitants had skin colors that matched that of their heads (these were not Tribe-specific, as we saw Perditus having a green head despite being Fire, and Vastus not matching Tarduk or Gresh). So, what if that is how it works in the new line? The transparent bones could be representative of their skin underneath the armor, if they are, indeed, mostly organic. This means that if Kopaka removed all his armor, he'd be almost entirely blue, Pohatu would be lime green, and Onua would be purple. EDIT: I have a new addition to this theory! With the revealing of the summer sets, we see many more transparent bone pieces as well as what appears to be actual bones. These figures, based on the animation, seem to be undead--reanimated corpses of the inhabitants of this world. The key part here is the bones--the new parts that actually look like they might be part of a human skeleton. This seems very indicative of an organic structure that has rotted away over time. They also have some transparent bone pieces, which could very well be bits of decaying flesh still hanging on as the corpse rots (or flesh growing back as the being returns to life). Thoughts? Theories? Theatrics? (I realize this is based around the sets, and so could belong in BD, but since it deals more with representing the in-story characters, I feel it should be welcome here.)

The current official Protector/Toa (ProToa) combiners, while interesting enough, have one common deficiency: they stink like a Toa of Dumpsters went nova. To amend this, I went to get a couple of Protectors and combined them with their respective Toa. I wanted to make the combinations easily reversible from the Toa's side, incorporate elements of both Toa and Protector tools, have some Skull Spider integration, and be done only with pieces from the Toa and Protector sets. Here's what I came up with. Pohatu + Protector of Herbs and Spices Stone http://i.imgur.com/xEZ5NLW.jpg This one's my personal favorite of the two. The projectile weapon is identical to the official design. It looked nice, so why change it? I made the armor on both arms symmetrical, and fashioned a pair of "headdress" shoulderpads to accentuate a "tribal chieftan" look. To this end, the tool in his left hand is a double-ended War Rattle. Lewa + Protector of Jungle http://i.imgur.com/gJSwu7e.jpg Not much to say about this one. The clawed feet are a shoutout to Lewa Nuva's MoL design. What do you guys think? Do you have custom ProToa combiners of your own to share? "Really. This is why you summoned me?" These dudes, trained and given elemental powers by the big man Pohatu himself, protect Po-Koto while he's off on business. Skinny Asymmentry over there has a sword. He stabs. Bigmin Mac Widensteen on the other hand, has striker eureka capabilities in his chest and a big glove. We're safe.

I have a theory about the new 2015 story, that might explain what the Protectors are protecting, why the Toa need those golden masks, and why Okoto has such a kooky look. Based on the promo comic on the back of the Master's boxes, it looks like the Protectors are protecting the masks! But why? Are they expecting the Toa, and keeping the mask warm for them? Maybe, but I have another idea too: Since this new BIONICLE is up front about being "magical" (forged from raw magic and gold, Ekimu?), this idea seems to make sense: The golden masks themselves, just by being in a certain region, change the environment itself! Or at least have a very strong link to it- or are just that powerful. And this would explain the wonky look of Okoto- the elements of the island are somehow influenced by the masks! (but maybe not, since the masks have to be forged from the elements now. Maybe these ones are special though?) This is why the Toa need those masks! From the promo comic, it looks like once they have them they can kick trash. I think that it connects them more deeply to their element (and region), and gives them the full range of their power. Without it, they only have the bare minimum (maybe like a turaga on Mata Nui? or maybe the comparison is just Toa Mata to Nuva in power). Well, what do you think? Any different ideas about Protectors, or what makes the golden masks so special? --------- [like, subscribe, and comment below!]
