OOC

I'm assuming we somehow have a means of communicating in real time across the galaxy.

We do not. It's actually a big thing, one I could have sworn I put in the first post but I'll double check. There are no FTL methods of communication; data must be physically transmitted.

OOC: Blimey, a scientific issue that is still a problem in this universe? I did not see that one coming.

There are quite a few, just don't come up much. The inability to communicate vast distances is just one of those that come up. Played a huge role in the political makeup of humanity's possessions.

OOC that makes sense. Radio was the first thing that I thought of for "long distance communication" and its probably how a guy like Vincent would say it.

"... I don't know what to say." The mechanic bit his lip in contemplation. "Yeah, this whole thing doesn't make sense to me either. I'm just here to fix things."

"I'm ready to go," Gaven said before he turned to Major Williams. "Honestly, I've never had the time to learn German. Suppose I should probably get on that, though, shouldn't I?" he asked.

Daniels cocked his head slightly at Estelle's question, seemingly non-plussed at first. After a moment his eyebrows arched ever so slightly in understanding, and he smiled apologetically. "I'm sorry. It's a bit out of the ordinary, and I hadn't considered that a comment on it would be insensitive."

"If it helps," He added, taking another sip of his coffee. "I don't think it's a bad thing. It's interesting. Unique. Looks good on you. But, on a note that isn't me sticking my foot in my mouth, shall we get going?"

She blushed a bit at his compliment and smiled, "Thank you... Let's get going then." The Major said as she got up, her cheeks still tinged the same color as her hair.

"So... What sort of trouble do you all think we can find on this other ship?"

IC [A doctor]

During a brief period inwhich time was roughly approximate to jelly, Ashley had finally been ushered through the medbay by another doctor, and put on a scanning machine. Dorian remained fairly quiet until the procedure was over, and the doctor in charge returned, reviewing the results on a tablet. "Well, there's definitely anomalies regions, but nothing that seems particularly harmful. The memory regions are far more active than what they should be at her age, but otherwise it seems fairly normal." He turned to Ashley. "Any headaches or sudden drowsiness?"

"Well, there has been some headaches, yeah." Ashley admitted as she looked at the doctor, particularly when she suddenly had all of Dorian's memories flooded into her.

"I guess only time will tell, if it is told at all, why this mission was so important that they needed us of all people." The mechanic sighed with a faraway look on his face; he suddenly snapped out of it and said "Do you think we should join the others? We won't get lost that way."

"Well, not a whole lot I can do. I've been told about some sort of psionic intruder? Haven't heard of that before but I do have some medication that keeps the brain a bit more... resistant against such things, as well as some medication to keep the headaches down." An aide walked up, handing a bottle of pills. "Two a day, two weeks, the print instructions are on there if your ship doctor needs to fabricate more."

Oh, those things. Relatively harmless, should keep your stress down though, quite handy.

"Well, I think you're good to go. I believe your crew is meeting in one of our lower mess halls, Mess Hall 4, the computer will get you there. I'd like to speak to your slug companion, though."

I think you can stop doing that, it's doubtful to actually come of much. Psionic training takes years of practice and skill and yeah you'll probably dig through someone's teenage years if you look at them funny. Here, let me distract your brain a bit. Dorian popped into the 'real' world. "Probably won't be able to do much while you're being delusional. Let's take a walk; I can get you onto the observation deck, you can clear your mind. Souper will catch up in due time."

That's a relief. Ashley was glad she didn't have to worry about accidently overloading her brain with people's thoughts. Though don't you think your memories might help me with the psionic training...stuff?

Ashley gave Souper and a doctor a quick goodbye before following the image of Dorian.

A bit surprised that the doctor wanted to talk to a slug about this particular problem, Souper approached the doctor and nodded, feeling what could only be described as professional distrust towards them. Of course it was par for the course, so the slug didn't mind. Things like this happened and if xhe ever actually worried about it, it meant that something bad had happened and the slug was overly paranoid. "Yes, doctor? Is there something you would like to discuss with me?" xhe said, curious as to what the doctor could want.

[Dorian]

"I am but a lowly mortal, I don't know that much. Let the techs do the training." The two began their journey towards the observation deck. "But yeah, I'm growing increasingly convinced we're stuck together. Memories and personality have merged too much, and the fact that the only anomalies were in your memories means that it'd be very hard for any slug to separate us. May need to start thinking on what this means for the future."

"Quite" the slug said, explaining to the doctor, "It's human, that much is obvious. She says that it's human and that they're from an agency, although this is apparently known to her because they accidentally...had mental harmony for a while. The technology of whoever is using it is not perfect, but it's strong enough to invade her mind. I am worried that it is not intending anything good for her. It's invasive and puts itself into the "empty spaces" of her head. Parts of the mind where there is room. Or it made itself at home, I am not sure. To be honest, I've never heard of this happening to a human, so I can't tell you more than what I know so far."

"I can't say I have much more experience than you, then. I did notice some unusual activity in dormant parts of the brain but nothing unhealthy, and certainly not what I'd call 'empty' spaces. It's puzzling, the idea of two consciousnesses in one brain, but the scans barely picked up increased activity. Whatever is in her head, it apparently shares enough of her thoughts to not register much activity."

[Dorian]

"Novel concept," Dorian remarked dryly. "I suppose you could. From what I understand of the subject it involves staring really intently at something."

Hmmmm....Ashley looked at the bottle of pills in her palm, she began to focus on that. She didn't know if anything would really happen, but it was worth a shot! She tried to think about the bottle rising from her hand as hard as she could, staring at the object.

Nothing happened for a good while, Dorian raising an eyebrow. Out of curiosity, though, he reached for the bottle and found that he could actually make contact with it, lifting it up. A nearby elevator opened to let a cadet out, who saw the picture before him, a catgirl with a levitating pill bottle, and decided that this was simply not his floor.

"Well, I guess this is why having a passenger in your head is a good thing." Dorian's eyebrow remained raised. "So your concentration and my, uh, presence combined allow you to levitate things. Cool."

"Wow." Ashley blinked a few times to make sure she wasn't just imagining things, but sure enough, Dorian was lifting the bottle, or Ashley's mind was rather. "I guess I really do have psionics." It was a rather simple statement, but the whole thing felt like an impossible dream, it was hard to believe all this was really happening.

"Honestly, I do expect that its there for some reason to take advantage of her. Psychokenetic reasons, perhaps, but reasons nonetheless. I remain worried and I think it might need to be dealt with sooner or later...If its really registering more use than it should, perhaps there is a physical way to flush it out of her system?" the slug asked, not entirely sure it was even possible.

There are quite a few, just don't come up much. The inability to communicate vast distances is just one of those that come up. Played a huge role in the political makeup of humanity's possessions.

OOC: Actually, assuming we are in fact just delivering information, that would explain a few things as well as address the query of why we don't just radio it. If the message has to be physically sent and it was something that certain parties would want to prevent from reaching its destination that would would warrant sending an entire military escort alongside it.

Also in a bit of fridge brilliance, I might have started to figure out why Nicole was transferred. There was a line used back when they were still on the slave ship:

He grabbed his pessimistic doctor (he'd need to consider replacing her: her bedside manner had proved awful)

It doesn't seem unreasonable he might have mentioned that after being rescued. Granted, it still doesn't explain why she was assigned to this particular ship and not just dropped off at the Brazillia with the other slaves or sent back to therapy, but that's another matter.

IC: Nicole looked at the mechanic worriedly. "I don't know," she said. "I suppose I'll have to deal with them sooner or later." She stopped, taking a deep breath trying to keep herself from freaking out. There was a moment of silence before she spoke, somewhat uncomfortably.

"It was just something that happened when I arrived. To be honest I'm not even sure I'm supposed to be in this area. You see, when I came aboard I was escorting a patient to the hospital. It's just that when I got there, I couldn't go in you know."

Nicole could feel her eyes starting to water. "Ever since Gaia I've been a bit... messed up in the head. That's why I was going through therapy and why the doctors opposed me leaving before I'd recovered. Working in a small medbay is one thing, just performing diagnosis and applying bandages to cuts and bruises, but then I saw the facilities here..." By this point, Nicole was visibly starting to cry, though she was trying to contain it.

"I just couldn't take it. I don't know what any of the officers will have to say about this, I'm sure my patient is going to be furious when she finds me, but it was just too much. Why am I even telling you this? I barely know you."

IC: "I thought this was the mess hall," Nicole replied, somewhat confused. "Though I suppose there's probably a separate one for the officers."

OOC: Okay, I've talked about this but I just feel I should ask before I go into anything crazy, just how strict are officer/enlisted designations at this point? I know in the past there's been a very clear separation, with officers often getting certain privileges not available to enlisted, but if I'm not mistaken it's a bit more relaxed nowadays.

So at this point I'm not sure if Nicole would be an exception to the rule or if what she's doing (mingling with enlisted) is normal. I'm not sure precisely what rank she would be (I'd say Captain, but ranking systems could have changed over time), but assuming we're still going on real-world rankings her status as a medic would make her an officer by default.
