Shadow Destroyer
So, there are a lot of topics on here about the rare bionicle masks and collectibles, but what would you say are the rarest bionicle sets? (As in, hardest to find?) I think the Piraka Kaita (Korea exclusives) are almost impossible to find, and then there's also the Sand Tarakava. It might be a prototype, but it was sold by Lego to some collectors, so I think it counts. Also, Toa Mata Nui and all the boxed titan combiners are difficult to find. Am I missing any? Klack
I think the Sand Tarakava beats the Piraka Kaita in terms of rarity. PK was actually sold so lots of Koreans might have it, and there's what...3 total ST prototypes made? Letagi
Here's one: http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/8026_Kraatu Instructions exist, so the plans for the set were finalized, but nobody is known to own it. As for the Sand Tarakava, nobody knows how many were made. There are various rumours that claim there were six, five, one, and Klack apparently heard of three. The only one we know of for sure is owned by PurpleDave at Mask of Destiny. Other rare sets include the rest of the 2001 prototype Rahi. A few BZPers have them. -Letagi

So only the official sets can be classed as HTF. Kraatu can't be called HTF so muc has extinct. The set doesn't exist so it's beyond rare, being impossible to own. On the other hand however literally anyone can make their own with instructions so it can also be classed as incredibly common. Depends on perspective I suppose! Mask collector
I own some prototype sets from 2001. I have a prototype Muaka and Kane-ra, Nui Rama, all six Turaga, all 6 tohunga and 3 of the toa (Lewa, Pohatu, and Kopaka). They are pretty cool, and different from the official models by quite a bit. Mask collector
One of the main differences is the code being on the outside of the mask instead of the inside. That and you can see most of the sculpting marks or machining marks on the mask as well. The reason I say sculpting or machining is because I don't know what method they used to sculpt the masks. emily
Wait, I thought those were fake. I saw a thread about that on BZ a while ago. There was a massive war over whether they could be considered legitimate sets, and no consensus was ever reached. It was confirmed that the attributed set numbers were in LEGO's database as Piraka co-packs, so I really see no reason to doubt their validity, but a lot of people felt the packaging was suspicious for diverging from the norm so much. Munty
Why would Lego only release them in one location though? And if they did why not US or the EU? Seems very odd. And even now after all the years of nutty collectors putting together checklists and such, this is the first time I've ever even seen the things. Rooster Nui
Was Irnakk a US exclusive then?My brother purchased Irnakk in 2006 from our local Australian Toys-R-Us, so the set ISN'T US exclusive. T.B.O.C
I'd imagine some of the store exclusives to be rarer - Lesovikk, Irnakk, Nocturn, Karzahni... etc. I know for a fact my local Walmart wouldn't stock Nocturn for a good two months back in 2007. I feel the store exclusives tended to be stocked less, and definitely bought more too. There's some exceptions though. For example, my Toysrus had several hundred Toa Iruni for at least 2-3 years after they were released.
