Breaking Point

"The Baconator would have been beautiful if it had worked. Don't mock progress, boss."

IC:

"..."

"That's fair." The Japanese pilot admitted, following Lauren with her feet, and the Huckbein with her eyes. It was huge, even for a Gunner. Or maybe it just seemed that big. It was hard to tell from her angle. Regardless, it was a pretty impressive looking machine. "I've decided I don't like any of you. The Far East Brigade is still running first generation Warriors, with only a few new toys."

Inoue Ayane found herself promptly lifted up by a bear hug around the abdomen and a chin in the crook of her neck and shoulder. Nadia White was cackling with her mouth closed.

"I have stealth puns~"

"Armbruster, I was testing it," replied the captain blandly.

He glanced back towards Maxwell.

"Sergeant, with the possibility of another colonial attack," he said, crossing his arms, "there is very little that an infantry specialist can do, given that the conflict was ignited with Walkers. The majority of our efforts will be focused upon repairing our machines and studying the technology that the Union left behind. It is unfortunate, but what we can do is to simply wait."

Even he and Armbruster were not immune. While they could practice in the simulators or inspect the repair work being completed on their own Walkers, they were really just waiting. Waiting for another assault on Horizon by the far more advanced colonials. Waiting for the good news to return from Research and Development. Waiting for something to change so that their chances would be greater in the next skirmish.

IC: October M. Brightbridge

"Unfortunate."

"I would have thought a few years away might have mellowed you out a little." Ayane replied, attempting to sound exasperated but unable to completely keep the amusement out of her voice. "Clearly I was wrong."

IC:

"And see if I can't get the chance to get a nice, long look at the tech they left behind. I'd love to take a look at the guns those big ones were using. Vernichten would love an upgrade to her rifle."

"100%!" Nadia said excitedly, still lumbering about with the Japanese Olympic crewmember in her arms as she reached Munequita. "If anything I've been getting crazier and crazier waiting for a chance to see you in the flesh again."

She plopped Inoue down before Horizon's last, thickest Raptor and put her hands on her hips. She was beaming with pride.

"She takes after her mothers, silly."

Nadia beamed at her Raptor, her pride and joy; armored in the whites and golds of Raphael, patron saint of the young, the insane, and those madly in love, it was--

Psych.

Nadia wasn't good at poetry. Especially not when it came to a mech she likened to a really bad ###### all the time.

"Major McKinley had them put some aftermarket armor on there in order to compensate for my flying. Said I was a few hairs too reckless for the base model." She bit her lip slightly, but her voice stayed casual and otherwise there was no indication of discomfort. "Makes it a little harder to push her all the way to the max, but some of those extra layers probably kept me alive today."

"Well, then I appreciate them." Ayane wrapped an arm around her shoulders, drawing her in and squeezing tightly. "Easy to believe that he'd think you need them, though. would."

...

"Think you need them, that is."

"Alright, sixty grand. And forty grand for the swear jar, Potty-Mouth-chan."

Nadia grinned and began leading Ayane in a circle around the Raptor, showing off the transformable Walker's angles.

"Both of those are an overestimation." The Japanese pilot responded, grumbling slightly while she examined the Raptor's various angles. It was a clearly defined machine, with gorgeous, cutting edge technology in every seam. Ayane, despite her best efforts, couldn't resist a small smile. "Beautiful. Just like the simulator they put in, back at the Far East Brigade."

"They ditched one of the old simulators to make room. The new one was designed to be able to simulate a Raptor, and they figured they had enough sims for the old Walkers." Ayane rocked on her heels a minute. "They were supposed to start getting Raptors in a year or so, wanted to start assessing pilot candidates. Looks like that won't be happening."

"...Hey, come here." The comforting arm around her shoulders was finally returned in kind. "I want you to check out this wing for me, I think I tweaked it in the air."

Nadia Lorena led her Asian counterpart around the Raptor, so that they were on the opposite side of the Walker from the Huckebein's bay. When Ayane was behind the wing, with Munequita's body between them and any witnesses, Lauren lifted the Warrior pilot up by the waist and pulled her into a kiss.

IC: "Those Walkers were annoying sturdy for how agile they were. I look forward to evening that gap. Especially since I'm about to get shot at a lot more."

"I serve the weak. I serve the helpless. I am their sword and their shield. If you want to strike at them, you must go through me, and I am not so easily moved."

"Look on the bright side. The armor increased with the number of shots."

IC:

The Warrior pilot blinked, a small show of surprise, at the surprise embrace. Surprise became amusement pretty quickly, though, and Ayane gave a quiet laugh as soon as she was able and wrapped her arms tightly around Lauren and squeezing as hard as she could. She let go pretty quickly, but she didn't move very far away. Not far enough to disguise the cracks in her (attempted) facade of exasperation.

"For a pilot that needed extra armor to survive, you're pretty sneaky."

"Good. Failure to adjust would imply the presence of another woman. And I think that the finest plane in human history would be detrimental to that hypothetical skank's health."

"As the one who left for Horizon, leaving me to the Far East Brigade, I'm not sure how much room you would have to object after a couple of years. After all, we're different people from who we were. Times change. People change with them." Ayane looked very serious, managing to hold a stoic expression perfectly while she spoke and regard the Raptor pilot sternly. "You replaced me with a machine. I'd be within my rights."

"Not that you actually have anything to worry about. Jealous-chan."

"Yeaaaah, guess you don't either."

Jealous-chan's face broke into a coquettish grin. If it had changed at all from her days in Tokyo, she didn't show it.

"And it took like four machines to come close to replacing you."

"Somehow I didn't think so, Ayane-chan."

Nadia finally embraced the Japanese pilot back wholeheartedly and tucked her chin into the crook on the other woman's neck.

"Thanks for coming to my rescue. I owe you another one."
