Tenebrae Invictus
Also if you're gonna' check out Yes, Fragile, Close To The Edge, and 90125 are musts. Granted, 90125 isn't really prog at all, but it's still a classic.I was planning on listening to Fragile first, actually.About 90125... I'm not a big fan of the opening song, "Owner of a Lonely Heart", but I'll give the album a try nonetheless. No! You must listen to what I said as well! I started listening to Yes first! It took Xin a long time before he finally gave in to listening! Quote Up, down, turn around, please don't let me hit the ground

Xinlo
Desperate Invi is desperate. :PI think Fragile's a good one to start with if the weird filler songs don't put you off ( We Have Heaven is a stupid pointless song). Legolover-361
Well, considering I thought the filler tracks in A Thousand Suns by Linkin Park added to the feel (whereas a lot of other people didn't like the album construction method), I should be fine with the filler ditties in Fragile. Xinlo
Alright, well all the power to you. I can't stand a few of them. :PAlso, to address your quesion earlier, it's kinda' difficult to tell or expllain where the line between rock and metal is. For a long time I couldn't comprehend how Breaking Benjamin wasn't metal, but I think... if you just listen to the genre consistently enough, you start to be able to just know. I can listen to a band and say "that's metal" or "eh, I think it's more on the rock side" and usually be right. Now, subgenres within metal? Forget it haha. Still have no clue about a ton of them. And have you listened to Train Of Thought yet? After hearing that, there's no denying Dream Theater is a metal band. On the flip side, no stretch of imagination could classify Linkin Park's recent stuff as being metal. Legolover-361
I guess Dream Theater is close enough to progressive rock to be discussed here...No, I haven't yet listened to Train of Thought. I really should, though I have doubts any of its songs can beat "Octavarium". Quote (( BZPRPG profiles: Kynaera, Nova ))
HeavyMetalSunshineSister
I tend to classify Dream Theater as progressive metal, which is definitely close enough. Xinlo
Oh ###### I got the metal topic and this one confusedsilly me.And your doubts are understandable; Octavarium is still my favourite DT song (though a few off their newest album A Dramatic Turn Of Events come quite close).EDIT: Everyone classifies them as Progressive Metal, Beardy Spoon. They helped invent the genre. Edited April 20, 2012 by A Pleasant Shade Of Xinlo Quote The Toa's Hideout is once again open for business! HeavyMetalSunshineSister
Well, yes, I know that, but my phrasing didn't. Legolover-361
Xinlo: I'll keep that in mind when listening, then.Lol, I just finished listening to "We Have Heaven", and it actually sounds quite catchy to me. I don't know what "Tell the moon or tell the marcher" means, but it adds interesting texture to the song. Xinlo
Rush is the definitive Prog Rock, dude, nobody's gonna' flame you lol. I think almost everyone in this topic loves Rush.On that note, anyone else hear the new single from Clockwork Angels, called "Headlong Flight" yet? It sounds almost metal. And it's awesome. Legolover-361
Yes's album Fragile is fantastic. As I predicted, the "filler" bothered me none. Now if only I can manage to get a copy of the album at a local library... Quote (( BZPRPG profiles: Kynaera, Nova ))

Tenebrae Invictus
I got it on CD in December. Much more convenient. Heart of the Sunrise and South Side of the Sky are my favorite on that one, but the others are all great. Maybe not Long Distance Runaround. Legolover-361
Yesterday, I borrowed Fragile and Close to the Edge from a local library. Both albums came with a couple bonus songs; both albums are fantastic. Yes is now one of my favorite bands.
