I don't think so... I'm pretty sure I use Samus as my avatar on a regular basis on some sites...

But good grief the second I have a Portal background on my phone everyone loses their fricking minds.

It's fairly common for people to use avatars of characters of a different sex.

I got a female avatar, no one has given me any grief. So I don't see why anyone should be bothered by a female avatar.

I don't think people are so much bothered as much as they think it's odd, but I'm having trouble understanding why. Since JiMing and myself switched our avatars to Agnes & Edea from Bravely Default comments like "I didn't know you did genderbent avatars!" have come up.

Yeah, I'm surprised such comments are even a thing. This has been going on for a while, but there's nothing wrong with it either. I happen to like Edea, so changing my avatar to her was just something I decided to do. I myself haven't gotten comments, but still...

"Genderbent avatars"? Is that a thing now? Odd. I mean, if it were a genderbent version of a character, then okay, but if it's always been a female (or as would be in my case, male) character, then why... no, I don't understand it. :/

Yeah, I do get that, but I didn't know that they were supposed to match...? O.e

They weren't ever required to. People just get weirded out by this stuff for whatever reason.
