IC (Ayiwah):

The commodore listened quietly, closely, a glacier in the middle of the passageway her cold expression unchanging at Nihi's words. And for a moment it seemed there was a better chance to get a a glacier to react to them before she did, standing with her backs straight and her hands held behind her. She let the Menti speak though, let her say what she felt she had to say to make her case. Parallel to that she checked what she already knew, had seen and learned about her, against what she was saying now, taking it into consideration for her response.

Ahrusa, wanting to step into action, spoke up: "Ma'am, would you like me to escort this stowaway from the premises? We can't afford a breach in security, especially now of all times."

Ayiway shot her glance, which was enough to remind her not to be overeager. The would-be stowaway had been caught almost instantly, had not shown any further signs of aggression and was completely cornered. They could at least afford to listen to her reasons before escorting her off the ship, if that became necessary. Ageru Dakte seemed to share the sentiment "Commodore, ma'am, if you'll excuse the presumption, I would ask that you not dismiss this Menti's story out of hand. I believe there is a ring of truth to it."

"Indeed." Ayiwah finally said.

The Ice was broken. If it was because of the commodore warming up and becoming approachable for Nihi or if it would be the edge of the glacier coming down to crush her remained to be seen. Ayiwah looked from Dakte and Ahrusa back to the Menti standing in front of her, waiting for her to judge her words.

"Your name is not unknown to me, Eiyu Nihi, quite the opposite, in fact. Your speech in the markets generated a lot of interest in your person as you have noticed. Her highness the Rora did ask me to find out who you were. I believe you when you say she told you she was considering to bring you along with her entourage for this expedition."

Her voice still had a hint of frost, but was otherwise neutral, just stating facts. However her next sentence probably would come as a bit of a surprise.

"I also understand your personal reasons why you want to come along." she continued, leaving a half second pause before saying: "Yes, I do know of your sister and her current condition. She suffered a grave injury by the hands of the chaotic six and they have yet to be punished for their crimes. They fled to this new island and you wish to go there as well - a wish all of us here can relate to."

Her words were empathetic enough that they might have warranted a flicker of hope for Nihi, if it hadn't been for the fact that they still had not lost their Edge. As with any decision she made, Ayiwah was being very deliberate in the process. And at this point, it was clear that there was a 'but' that was approaching; and fast.

"However, the simple fact is, that your name is not on the list. And from what I have seen of you in person it is clear that your emotions are dictating your actions. Your method of boarding this vessel alone is more than enough proof of that. You did not inquire the whereabouts of the Rora before attempting to find her; you did not ask the Suihei to meet with me or another officer; and when she, by carrying out her duty as watch-stander, rightfully denied you access, you attacked her."

The commodore's eyes were strict again - not unfriendly and without any sign of her being spiteful - but clearly showing that she would not be swayed.

"You did not reflect on your actions and you could not keep your emotions in check when you did not get what you wanted. Such behaviour is unacceptable and if you were enlisted in the Navy you would face the appropriate consequences. I understand your motivation; and you have my sympathies. But frankly, it is my opinion that bringing you along would be a liability, not an asset, even if you were on the first expedition. For the safety of the mission, I can not approve."

"This decision is not one I can make alone though. Herupa Hanako is leading the expedition as a whole, in her highness' stead. I will confer with her once she arrives, to determine what is to be done with you. Until then, you will stay aboard. You are not under arrest, but you can not move about freely either. Ahrusa and Dakte will escort you to the galley for the time being."

The last bit of the sentence was both information for Nihi, as well as instructions for Dakte and Ahrusa.

IC:

"Thank Goddess, I was afraid I was the only Dastana on this trip," I replied, giving the Dasaka an exaggerated sigh of relief as I shook her hand.

"Name's Daijuno." I leaned back against the framing. "So, what brings you on this fantastic voyage, Ms. Dastana Akimoto?"

IC

"They chose me, I guess." Aki shrugged in substitute of further explanation: she honestly wasn't really sure why she'd been selected at all. Sure she was a good smith, but not the best. Sure, she'd spoken to the Chojo once, but that was once, and she'd been scared stiff.

"I'm an engineer. As far as I know, that's shorthand for 'I hit things that stop working until they start working again.'"

She shrugged again, cracking a smile. "At least, I hope that's what it stands for, because Zuto Nui knows I'm not much good at anything else."

IC: Soraya [sado, the Chiisai Ryuu]

The Plangori shook her head.  "Not who I meant, actually.  Don't suppose you've seen Yu- the Rora around?"

IC (Tazera)

Tazera looked quizzical.

"No," she said. "Why would you look for her here- "

The light of realisation dawned on her face.

"You do know that the Rora isn't coming on the expedition?"

IC (Dakte)

The Ageru nodded, and placed a hand on Nihi's shoulder to lead her away to the galley.

IC: Soraya [The Chiisai Ryuu]

The noise that came out of Soraya's mouth was about half a tone away from being only audible to certain birds.  This carried on for a full five seconds until, like a cloud remembering it has a thunderstorm to get on with, it snapped down to:

"-ccccOME ON! I spent days up at the palace, days! Nobody says, 'oh, Soraya, the Rora's changed her mind,' 'oh, Soraya, so-and-so's going to be leading the trip', no, they just go ahead and let me carry on.  No, the saihoko doesn't need to know, no ma'am-"

This went on for a while longer before she managed to get a deep breath in and turn to the now-slightly-shellshocked Dasaka.

"Okay.  Okay.  Do me a favor, Taz.  If the Rora's not in charge of this thing, who is?"

IC: Ahrusa

Ahrusa carefully moved toward the Menti, cautious as ever. "Please, follow us. We do not wish for you to get "lost" along the way." She motioned for Nihi to move behind the awaiting Daske, who was prepared to lead the rouge Menti to the Galley.

IC (Tazera)

The Lieutenant's eyebrows gradually rose throughout Soraya's tirade. By the time the Plangori woman was finished, they had almost left her forehead.

"That would be Herupa Hanako."

IC:

"I've been out here before." The Eiyu Menti said, joining the conversation with a much quieter voice. Kagesu wasn't usually one to take part in socialization anyway, and traveling without her other half just felt wrong. Combat disadvantage, too. Without her partner she had to either work with one of her compatriots, or handle both the support and offense roles by herself.

Not an enviable proposition.

"It's been a while, but the terrain was nice for training. Good cover, varied environmental factors."

IC (Enali)

"Mhmm..." Enali replied noncommittally. She wasn't a warrior (not yet, at least; the clan's trainers seemed to think she'd make one) and she couldn't really relate to Kagesu's fixation on training. 'Cover' and 'environmental factors' didn't matter to her. To Enali, it was just a beautiful place.

Perhaps she should change the subject.

"Anyway...about an hour's walk further, and we'll have reached the furthest I've ever gone up here. It'll probably be even further before we find any sign of dragons."

Jiyu nodded politely, and returned to searching for more books.

[sado, Imperial Library]

To say I had stalked First Son Jiyu to the Imperial Library would be lying.  Stalking implies I was trying to avoid getting noticed, which I never am unless I need to get away from people.  He had been simply doing that brooding thing about whatever tall people brood about, and by the time I actually decided to go bother him he was already in the establishment.

Oh well.  I don't object to libraries.

I made a point of avoiding the illustrated scrolls (to much like something mother would like) and headed straight for a few bound volumes by my favorite poet.  It's amazing how much emotion he could slam into just a few lines.  Anyway.  The Hogo Torosu was gone, so now was my chance.

I sidled up to him.

"Hey.  How's it going?"

I'm terrible at being friendly.  This is why it's better to be mean most of the time.  Unfortunately that only gets you true companies in novels.

IC: Soraya [The Chiisai Ryuu]

"Hanako?" Yumi's handmaiden?  Truth be told, she hardly knew her - they'd had a few brief conversations on wardrobe issues, but nothing of any real substance.  Still, she was Yumi's right-hand woman, that much was clear, and so if she was calling the shots -

Soraya stifled a sigh.  It would be so much easier to call it a day and make for the exit before anyone caught on that she wasn't actually supposed to be there, but - Yumi or no Yumi, she had to know.

She realized Tazera was still staring at her, and she gave a wry smile.  "Sorry.  I just - it's tiring to be locked out of the loop all the time.  Do you know if Han- Lady Herupa's come aboard yet?"

Ic:

"Hello," jiyu said, turning ever-so-slightly to address his new visitor. He couldn't say he recognized her... But with everyone trying to look so unique, they all looked so similar when everyone's trying to stand apart from a crowd. It also didn't help that most of them didn't even stand higher than his waist.

"I would like you to know, that was very forced. If you want to make a positive impact with your greeting, you're going to have to put more effort into it. So with that said, who are you, and what do you want from me?"
