Valenti posted a version of the pic, which inspired my avatar, which then caught on.

Most are amusing - to me, at least - because they're just so inherently and incredibly pointless.

Most of the avatars are recolorings of the Fluttershy version someone made which itself was a vectorization of a full body shot of a Pinkie Pie vector with the same expression and hat that somebody else made which is also a vectorization of a drawing made by yet another person.

True story.
