I was gonna use a Garai and then it was like "NO USING KANOHI KK"

Then I was going to use my gold Strakk mask and it was like "NO NON PRODUCTION PARTS KK"

"Oh hey, we want you to make a new and different Glatorian, but we also want you to use Glatorian heads and you can't use Kanohi, even upside down or in other configurations to differentiate your MOC from the real sets. You have to use one of the helmets already available, so that way Certavus looks just like some other punk Glatorian everyone already owns. Now be creative! "

Makes sense...

Somewhere else.

Geez, Certavus is gonna look exactly the same just because he might have the same head as other Glatorian do, while the body is completely different?

Makes sense.

Not to be pretentious or anything, but when it comes to MOCs and identity, I've been doing this since the line began. When one character uses a single mask or helmet as a symbol of who they are, etc, people have a very hard time disassociating the identity from the headcovering.

Which is one of the reasons so few of us use the newer Kanohi in MOCs, because they're so representative of the characters who originally possessed them.

So yes, you could make the body completely different, and you're going to get those people who say "it looks like vorox. I don't know why you didn't use a different helmet."

It's a dumb rule. The MU characters were based off of those on Bara Magna. Their bodies, their proportions, etc. Why couldn't the hau say, have been based on some famous Glatorian helmet from before the cataclysm? Hmm?

YES. Which is also why we plead for mask packs, or heck, even if characters like the Voyatoran had different colored Toa Metru masks.

If it looks like Vorox, then the only other suitable helmet was probably Zesk's. :P Very good point. Which is why it's best to go custom.

They were? Wow. Even more reason I'd like to use, say, a Kanohi Kakama, but put it flat on the head, like a hat, y'know? It's just a piece of metal found and shaped to be used as armor. (Although I do think it would be weird to see a Kanohi full on, from the front, considering what this year's heads and headpieces are like.)

If that were true, then we might lift the Kanohi ban. Besides, we are allowing few Kanohi to be used. The ones that look like helmets, anyway.

Perhaps it would be hard to make a Certavus MOC using Strakk's mask. Perhaps. But I see no reason Metus's mask should be enough to make Certavus resemble Metus. It's a very versatile, simple mask.

On that note, I can agree that oftentimes a mask does attach itself to a character in the minds of viewers. The same can be said for tools. Which makes it all the more surprising that when LEGO spends their new piece budget designing new masks and tools people cry, "Give us new torsos!"

And on the subject of torsos, I have seen some custom torsos already among the entries, and I am much more impressed with simple Inika torsos. The MOCist vanguard may be able to make impressive custom torsos, but this comes of experience-- you cannot treat MOCists who use pre-designed torsos as if they are just uncreative. Perhaps they, like me, experiment with custom torsos on their own but reserve the use of them in contests for the future when they can master such techniques. In the meantime, they use conventional torsos, seeking to produce something that could pass as a real Glatorian set.

To conclude, I have very high hopes in my own MOC, which uses an Inika-style build (although the armor is attached with far more complex techniques) and Metus's mask. Why? Because I feel this MOC looks unique, and more importantly represents Certavus well. Once I get pictures I am proud of I will see if others can agree that custom builds are not essential to the creation of largely unique characters.

Yes, Metus's would work, since it is more simple and used on a little character. Not quite "iconic" as a main character's.

"Custom builds are not essential to the creation of largely unique characters," no, I guess not, but they do help in contests with impressing the masses. I have seen a few good MOCs in the contest thread that have Inika torsos.

I wish I had Metus' helmet. =/

I've thought about using Berix's, but meh.

And I don't see where it says some masks are okay...

Yeah, there's a whisper in the back of my head telling me to go get Metus for the helmet and head, but then I realize I don't want to spend $7 and that I can make a better custom helmet and head.

The rules were bent that you can use a Garai, a 2004 Krahkahn(Mispelled, Teridax/Icarax mask), Vultraz's mask, and Hydraxon's. The reason is that they look like helmets.

When rules get this specific, you know it isn't a good contest.
