    BRICKS CASCADE EDITION

Today, we got up early and headed down to the Oregon Convention Center for the first public day of Bricks Cascade.

    It was awesome.

I got my BZP Staff shirt (which is awesome and I never ever want to take it off) as well as a BZP Staff brick for my brick badge, which is still in a drawer somewhere in North Carolina. I met Kakaru and Swert for the first time as well. (The former's awesomeness is recounted in the entry immediately prior to this one.) I got a purple Zamor Sphere prototype after bugging Black Six for a bit, as well as one of those free little Mata Nui stones that were being handed out for free to all BZP members. (I think Kakaru also made them ... ? I'm not sure at this point, really; the entire day is kind of melding together.)

Just as a note, I'm not entirely sure of the order that these things happened in, so while they might be out of order, at least they're all be here. Hopefully.

Xccj got out his Quest for Makuta board game, and we played it on the ground in the middle section of the BIONICLE area, an area that was surrounded by tables. While xccj was very cordial in repeatedly explaining the rules to Kakaru, his brother, Velox, Swert, and me, we all still forgot parts of the rules. (Velox kept leaning back and texting people and only got like one thing during the game.) Kakaru got on a tear at one point and declared himself the Slaughterer of Rahi.

This game never got finished, because one thing after another happened. Swert thought his phone was missing, until he realized that xccj had moved it to one of his coat pockets. Also, Binkmeister showed up.

Yeah. Binky. The guy who basically helped BZPower get started. He's a really awesome guy, and we all sort of randomly chatted with him for a few minutes before he had to leave. (I was relieved to know that I wasn't the only one who got a bunch of free stuff from Kakaru - if Bink had stuck around longer he might have walked off with Kakaru's entire collection.)

Around this time, we had the bright idea to arrange the chairs like the interior of a car and imitate the famous "What is Love?" GIF. Swert played the driver, I was the guy next to him banging his jaw open, and Kakaru was in the middle of the backseat area, his jaw unhooked into a trollface and sliding back and forth. Velox filmed this, and after reviewing the video he took, I can safely say that we're all pretty crazy people to even think about doing that, not to mention actually going through with it. If a GIF of three people at a convention doing this gets circulated around the BZP blogs, the few people left on this site with the impression that we have anything in our heads that even remotely resembles sanity would realize their horrible mistake.

By then, we were all getting pretty hungry, so the six of us decided to go to a nearby mall's food court. This was well past afternoon, and the only thing I had to consume all day up until that point was a large bottle of water. However, xccj had to go back to the con for something that he had inadvertently left behind, so Velox, Kakaru and I screwed around on top of large stone spheres that were placed in a nearby courtyard area. The other BZP staff were just walking back from getting lunch at a donut shop and waved to us. (Later, Black Six told us that "we saw a bunch of people in light blue shirts doing stupid stuff on these balls, and I thought 'is that our staff?' Then we got closer and I was like 'yep, that's our staff.'") We then hid before xccj came back - all save for Swert, who looked like a stalker in a bush.

We went into the mall and traveled up the stairs to the third floor, where we ate. Kakaru and Velox noticed a dental office located inside the mall, and suggested a few things that we could do to prank them - eating cinnamon rolls in their office, or going inside and asking for a burger with a side of fries. Eventually, Kakaru decided on going in and asking them if they would sell him a toothbrush. While they wouldn't sell him a toothbrush or toothpaste, they gave him a one-time-only use brush for free. Velox and I were doing all that we could to contain our laughter.

Thinking that the toothbrush incident would be the only hilarity the mall would provide to us, the offices for a dental school were beside us as we walked out. I pointed these out to Kakaru and dared him to go inside and ask for toothbrushes. They gave him both toothbrushes and toothpaste completely for free.

We went back to the convention center and got there right before the public hours were about to end. Since I had only paid the eight dollars necessary to enter the con for that day only, I thought it would be akin to BrickFair and they'd have to go just short of sweeping people out with a broom to get the public out. Amazingly, I was able to walk around the place freely without a badge, and no one said a thing to me about it.

At one end of the convention center, they had set up a big ramp, one which small car MOCs could be set up on. They had a contest going on to see how far various MOCs would go. While I was initially a spectator to this madness, Kakaru convinced me to run over to the free-play Duplo section, rapidly build a MOC, then set it off. I put Winnie the Pooh on it, but despite this, it spun out of control nearly immediately after getting off the ramp. They later curved the ramp and set it up on the table. It took Winnie a couple of times to make it over, but after it did, I pronounced Winnie dead and reminded people that it was a lesson in always wearing your seatbelts.

After this was over, we went on over to another room, where I planked on a table for a while until other people came in. Kakaru was one of the finalists in the figure-out-which-collectible-minifig-is-in-the-bag-while-you're-blindfolded contest, and Velox and I made up the sparse cheering section for him.

We went back to the main convention center, where we made commentary on various MOCs, badly mispronounced both BIONICLE names and BZPower member names, and generally goofed off until everyone in the main center was made to sit in a smaller room so they could announce the prizes - but not before Kevin Hinkle had a Q&A session, where I learned that Ninjago would be ending though it was the second-most-profitable line (though we were promised that its successor would make the Ninjago fans ask why they didn't end it sooner). The Collectible Minifigs are also going to have at least six more waves, and Friends is doing very well. Black Six asked the obligatory "when is BIONICLE coming back?" question, and he might also have asked when the Monorail line was returning. All you had to do, from that point onward, to get the entire room to laugh was to mention "monorail." They then gave out the prizes - Kakaru won two or three while xccj racked up four or so.

However, it was time to leave, so handshakes went all around - save for Kakaru, who gave me a hug. I wish I could have stayed around for the fancy dinner - and tomorrow's day as well - but alas, that is not to be. We got back to the hotel in time to see folks in elaborate costume and makeup, portraying zombies, skeletons, vampires, Henry VIII, Cleopatra, grim-reaper-meets-Slender-Man-in-skeleton-bling-people, ghostbusters, Charles Dickens impersonators ... the list really does go on and on. (Apparently there's some sort of convention in the hotel where all of these people are attending.) The funniest thing about it are the voices - one monster would approach another and say "hey man, what's up?" in a jovial tone completely the opposite of what their outward looks would dictate their voices sound like.

Tomorrow, recovery from a severe awesomeness overdose as we begin the long drive back home.

Teal: It's such an awesome color. Of course, we only got a hint of it in Kongu and a Tarakava (plus some pre-Bionicle Slizers), but I for one love teal. It's just...cool. There's no way to explain it.

Who else wants to bring teal back?

In B:Y1, levels will be accessed via the Kini-Nui menu. Each Toa will have separate levels, though the levels are somewhat like short episodes. Each will include Rahi enemies, and if it's viable, a boss-Rahi at the end.

Each Toa will have separate powers to start with. These include elemental powers (these do basically the same thing, though the effects are different) and their mask powers. Starting with one mask (their primary mask), they will gain more powers as they go through levels and find the masks hidden in those levels. Noble Masks will be hidden as well.

Each Toa has a "special ability", which will be accessed by pressing the same button for each character. There should be a limit on how much a Toa can use these - after all, we don't want them abused.

Master of Shadow Matoran has kindly supplied a WIP list. My notes are bracketed and bolded.

TAHU: Can walk on lava, and loses his Life Energy half as fast as the other characters. [i think surfing on lava might be better.]

KOPAKA: When he hits an enemy that isn't a boss, the enemy is stunned/frozen for three-to-five seconds.

    LEWA: Can double-jump.

GALI: Can swim, and therefore cross water. [We probably should have this ability for anyone with a Kaukau, 'cept Pohatu. ]

POHATU: Can go into a PowerRun-mode, which gives him the ability to escape from an enemy quickly.

ONUA: Can use his claws to smash or lift pieces of the environment.

If possible, it will automatically save progress at the end of each episode.

Life as a Forum Assistant certainly has its perks: namely, topic closing. It's kind of fun, though I've only closed one so far. If I assisted in Q&A, COT, or GD, I'd be able to close topics on a more frequent basis, but I'm not complaining.

Topic closing comes with a downside, though. Some FAs - like me - are expected to be funny, for some reason. Oh, sure, I could go with two- or three-word closing statements, but that's no fun at all, since they're used all the time by others. The clever and hilarious topic closings go down in BZPower history, right above famous staff name changes and right below inane spam topics.

So, your mission: Write up a topic closing post. Speech? Parody? Story? Nonsensical poetry? It's totally up to you. Post it as a comment here in this entry. The entries will then be divided and placed in polls, and whoever's entry wins will end up as an actual topic-closed post. You can enter as many times as you wish.

You have until September 26th, 2012 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time to submit entries - so what are you waiting for? Get writing!

So let's talk about MOCing. If you've got a few pieces lying around, chances are that you've built something uniquely your own. Regardless of the size of your collection, MOCing is the inevitable result of imagination and ABS plastic. It's why the BBC forum has held so many contests in BZPower's storied history.

Your mission: build something that uses twenty pieces or fewer. (Twenty-one is right out.) With such a limitation, the contest puts a premium on part usage and imagination. System, CCBS, classic BIONICLE, fusion ... the style is up to you. (Just keep in mind that there is a maximum of two entries per member.) Entries should come with an image and a name.

The winner will receive an exclusive engraved brick. (I'm no stranger to shipping internationally.) The entry period ends Saturday, August 15th at 11:59 PM Eastern time.

So what are you waiting for? Get building!

THE ENTRY PERIOD IS NOW CLOSED.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to ...

"What is this?" you might dare to ask. "Why did you name a contest 'fresh salad'? Sumiks, are you mad?" Well, that I most certainly am, but the name does make sense in the context of the contest.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, will be: Build a MOC with a fruit or vegetable. A real, edible, tasty food item. The MOC must contain a fruit or vegetable as part of its construction - you can't photograph any old creation with a banana making a cameo appearance in the background. That's a no-no.

You will have one month to build, starting today, January 1st, 2012, and running through February 29th, 2012. Voting will begin immediately afterwards.

Enter MOCs using the following form:

    Member name:
    Entry picture:
    Entry topic (optional):

Before I conclude, I'd also like to mention that I have a co-host for this contest: Brickeens will be co-hosting, as he came up with the concept of this contest.

So what are you waiting on? Grab a fruit and start building!

Unity has been downloaded, the game will soon be started. However, there is one slight difficulty:

I don't have any 3D models of the Toa Mata.

So yeah. Post it in your blog, put it in your sig, anything: I need to spread the word on this project. It'll never work without the help and support of the BZPower community.
  9. Sumiki
Okay, here's how it goes. You take two or more emoticons and combine them into a new emoticon. You can post as many times as you like, provided that you do not double-post.

    For example:

+ + = I'm scared of the angry alien!

    :wakeup2: + = Tohu in the morning.

    OTHER

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «AkamaiWairuha I think we'll be able to combine the voices of the constituent Toa for the Kaita, so whoever gets the part of the Toa, in the end, will also have this part.
If you want to audition, or know someone who's not a BZP member who might like to audition, please record an audition consisting of your BZP name (if you're a member and not just a friend, but say who you're a friend of if you are one), your desired character, and then a line that that character says. You can repeat this formula for however many characters you want to audition for.
Please record clearly with little to no background noise, and send me the file via PM. Optimally, it should be in a .wav or a .mp3 format.

I know that there are a lot or characters here, but I think there will be enough interest. Plus, we don't have to use all of the Matoran I listed - that's a best-case-scenario list.

About the scripts: We'll probably include lines from the MNOLG, but we'll also have to script the other lines. If you're a writer or know someone on BZP who is, please tell them about this! We'll compare different scripts in this entry, and compare notes on what would be good to include. That way, we'll get the best of all worlds for the script.

UPDATE: JUNE 28, 2010: Complete update to all voice actors interested. Thanks a million to Sir Kohran for his help on this! I also added a section to account for "other" characters - right now only the Kaita are listed.
  11. Sumiki
Well, well, looks like BZP's back already, and just in time for this week's Tablescrap.

This week is a monolith from the book/movie "2001: A Space Odyssey". The dimensions in the book state that a monolith is 1:4:9, the squares of the first three numbers. I did my best to recreate this.

(excuse the slight blurriness, my camera wanted to act obese)

The monolith appeared at BrickFair 2011, but I didn't want to make a full-blown topic for it. Its card read "no epic music required", prompting at least one public attendee to comment on how it was one of the best things there.

Also, Brickeens' dad said: "It's a fantastic use of color."

SOMEWHAT LATE TO THE PARTY BUT HEY HERE GOES

Xaeraz hugs the "Sumikube" - the official BrickFair 2012 mascot. Consisting of a Companion Cube Plushie with a hat and huge sunglasses, it was a big hit at the tables, especially during the public hours.

The Sumikube sits amongst my MOCs.

    Zatth poses with the Sumikube.

When Avohkah Tamer showed up, I just had to stick my panda/fez/shades combo on him. I have pictures of others doing this, but AT's was probably the best.

On the second day, we ran into -Windrider- as we were perusing the other tables. So what did we do?

    IMPROMPTU HATPILE, THAT'S WHAT

Xaeraz sticks his head into the camera. This is one of the most disturbing images ever.

Windeh is sexeh with two hats

On the third day, Black Six grabbed my fez and donned it, rightly proclaiming that they are cool.

    MOCs, MOCs everywhere ...

HEY BFA, WE DIDN'T SCREW IT UP THIS TIME :)

On the last day, the King of All Hatpiles was created. I'm not sure how many I was balancing, but it was awesome.

GROUP SHOT (after I convinced ChocolateFrogs to aim the camera right-side up)

Dinner at Longhorn Steakhouse. We tried in vain to get a good group shot but none of them really turned out. In this one, Avohkah Tamer is a blur and only half of Spink's head can be seen.

In this one, everyone's a tad blurry and Sisen is staring at something that is most definitely not the camera. Also, Spink is pulling the Steve Jobs face.

    LOOT, GLORIOUS LOOT

All of the teal. ALL OF IT.
  14. Sumiki
Here are some random ideas for Bionicle: Year One.

Opening sequence: No extra work here, just the already-made '01 video of the canisters falling from the sky, with possibly some drums in the background to increase the intensity. I was also thinking that the video could flash onto the screen and fade out, much like the effect used on the text in those "WE ARE WAITING" banners.

The video continues, until we see Onua explode out of the can. Onua's parts are in the background, and smoke is rising from the canister, as the graphics fade in with the "Play" "Save" and etc.

Actual Gameplay: I have a few ideas floating around, but the main concept is to have it episodic - you complete the first Onua level (a nod to the canceled game that started with Onua's level) and then access other episodes in different Koros, based on different mini-storylines and MNOLG stuff, i.e. an Onua Vs. Lewa level, or a Tahu-underground-with-lots-of-Kofo-Jaga level. You can even go back to already-completed levels for fun or to get more masks.

In each level, you will be able to collect Kanohi masks (and the rare Makoki Stone parts seen only six times throughout the game) and talk to villagers and Turaga.

Once every level is complete and you have collected all of the masks, you choose your Toa and you descend into Mangaia. I was thinking that right before that, there would be a cutaway scene, a 3D rendering of the famous MNOLG sequence where they descend. Different challenges will be thrown at you underneath Mangaia, such as the Shadow Toa and the Manas.

After all of Makuta's cronies are defeated, you fight Makuta for a bit, and if you beat him, a 3D render of the famous Toa Vs. Makuta scene plays, including the part where Takua awakens the Swarms, setting up Bionicle: Year Two …

    *peers around corner nervously*

Hi, y'all. It's been a hot minute. Life's been bananas, but the semester is drawing to a conclusion and though I have much left on my plate to finish before January, I fulfilled my obligations and saw The Last Jedi.

Going into it, I was somewhat nervous for where the series was headed. I really enjoyed The Force Awakens, though perhaps my enthusiasm was amplified by the fact that I was seeing a Star Wars film on the big screen when I thought for years that Revenge of the Sith was the final say in the saga. With the passage of time, I realized that TFA wasn't quite the cinematic masterpiece, but it was an enjoyable addition that attempted to assure and assuage the viewing public that the franchise was safe in Disney's hands. It rectified some of the glaring holes of the prequels, yet there was definitely a sense of playing it safe.

What I disliked most about TFA was exactly what everyone else disliked—the "playing it safe" bit. I also thought that the plot, in its pitting of a retrofitted Empire against a retrofitted Rebellion, was one that negated the original trilogy in good overcoming evil. If the evil just came back, with the same outfits and the same weapons ... then what was the point? I will give George Lucas the credit he deserves in making the prequels something fresh and different, not just a series of callbacks (or would they have been call-forewards?) to the OT.

With Rogue One interleaved between actual episodes, I saw a different side. I really enjoyed Rogue One—more than TFA—but with it came an overwhelming sense of just how J.J. Abrams treated familiar characters in TFA. CGI!Tarkin and Darth Vader figure prominently in Rogue One, but the film doesn't feel weighted down by their presence. I wrote about the problems with creating good prequels a long time ago on Blogarithm, and I applauded Rogue One for telling the story in an exciting (and shocking!) way. We knew how it ended up, but that didn't stop it.

Now onto The Last Jedi. In short: I didn't like it. Its holes were glaring. In an attempt to break itself free from being a rehashed mashup of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, we instead got a jumble of underutilized actors, unutilized plot points, and familiar faces acting well out of character, in addition to continued use of past themes from the OT as TFA had. I'll be clear: TLJ is not The Phantom Menace, but if the dialogue were worse, it might be a contender for Star Wars bottom-feeder.

If you've seen the film, my more exact qualms are Spoiler-fied. And I have many issues.

Some of you may be wondering about me and my sanity due to my various profile updates, which have, as of late, been getting around outside BZP. There's now a Wisdom of Sumiki tumblr and twitter. (I cannot take credit for the operation of either of those accounts.) I also feel as if my activity on here has waned a bit, and I'd like to take a step towards rectifying it. Thus, I decided that it's time for another Blogarithm Contest.

Let's talk about my status updates for a minute - specifically, what's behind them. I'm a simple man, and I like simple, ludicrous status updates. What originally started out as a mashup of whatever surrealist things I came across has taken on a mind of its own.

So let's pretend that these aren't snippets of wisdom that mere mortals are unable to comprehend. Realistically or not, let's assume that there's a pattern here. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is theorize on the nature of my status updates. In other words, tell me how you think I derive them.

You have until January 15th at 11:59 PM Eastern to post your theories in the comments section, and you're allowed to submit up to three entries. After the polls, the winner will be announced on January 19th. The winner will receive a prize.

I realized that they still sold the old lime-green ball joints on Pick-a-Brick, and so I ordered some. This was built one night while Brickeens was sleeping.

Also, I've noticed that older old-style ball joints seem to hold axles better than newer old-style ball joints. Half the time, I was MOCing, and the other half, I was retrieving the wings from the floor.
