My understanding of compound metre is different than yours, I think, or at least this is what my piano teacher told me. For example, if you have 9/8 you would not give every 8th note a beat, rather every group of every three 8th notes (dotted quarter). 9/8 would be 3 beats on a dotted quarter per measure, making it compound triple.
