I'm a fairly tech savvy guy. My computer breaks, I can fix it. People seek me out when they can't figure something out. When it comes to Javascript, though, I'm pretty sure that's powered by black sorcery.

I just thought of something today. As certain technologies, like text to speech and dictation programs, get more advanced, will our society someday evolve beyond the need for literacy? What do we even use literacy for these days anyway?

    -Reading signs.
    -Sending letters and emails.
-Reading and writing books, articles, magazines, etc.
    -Chatting online.

As computers become more and more advanced, a lot what is written could instead be dictated to a computer, which would then filter out the stuttering, pauses, and mistakes and turn it into a more polished version which could then be transmitted to other computers that would play the message. For signs, autonavigation systems in your cars or hovercrafts would be doing all the driving anyway, so you wouldn't have to worry. When chatting with multiple people at once, a feed of various sound bites appears, which you can select one at a time to prevent everyone from talking at once as well as offering you the option to replay their messages.

Am I missing something or could this be our next technological leap?

Yeah, they were up for a few minutes today, but "the Man" wanted them taken down. Luckily, SPIRIT snagged them before they vanished. The first word is their English name and the second word is their Pokedex species in Italian... for reasons I won't go into. Enjoy.

Why, Dobby? WHY!?!?!?!?!? Your death was sadder than Moody, Burbage, Hedwig, Bathilda, Dumbledore, Sirius, and Cedric's deaths put together times a billion!

Also, they left out Phineas Nigellus, so how did Snape find them?

So turns out that in Pokémon, Ice Type is not super effective against Rock Type... It's been over a decade and I'm learning this today...

Everything involving paperwork and school administration will go perfectly and I won't have to worry about such things as my exam mysteriously vanishing. Luckily I went into the exam with a passing mark, so it isn't vital that they find it, but I really don't want a 55% mark.

Wikipedia was unhelpful in this regard, so I bring my question to you. As a child, when you played tag, there would have been a "safe zone" that while touched prevented you from becoming It. I would like to know what term you used to name this safe zone.

Personally, everyone I knew called it T (short for time-out). Wikipedia calls this "gool" or "base". What names do you know of?

Another yuletide has come and gone and here's what I did this year. On Christmas Eve, I went out Christmas shopping and the weather decided to punish me for my procrastination with bucketing rain. Soaked to the bone, I managed to buy something for everyone. My family came from Canada to visit me in France, allowing me to see them in person for the first time in four months, which in of itself was a great present. They were pretty jet-lagged, but we managed to make it to our apartment (which was much nicer than my tiny studio apartment), where we set up a small artificial Christmas tree, Christmas lights, and put out our presents. Just as we were about to watch a movie before going to bed, the power went out, so they decided to go to sleep while I tried to entertain myself. I managed to fix the power before my laptop battery ran out, though, so I didn't die of boredom.

Christmas morning, we opened our presents. I got:

-Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex
    -City of Secrets
    -Civilization V
-A bunch of those Parker Bros. card games
    -A novelty t-shirt
    -Miscellaneous chocolates

After spending a few days in our apartment with me showing my family around, we were unfortunately unable to visit my great aunt and uncle (who had taken ill), so we instead drove to a town just outside of Dijon, where we stayed in a nice, homey hotel for the night, which we had all to ourselves. Consequently, I decided to explore the place at night. To heighten the adventure, the doors were all unlocked, so it was a pretty exciting adventure. The next day, we drove to Paris to spend the week there before my family would go back to Canada and I would go back to finishing my year in France.

So yeah... add me on Steam (name in the content block) if you want to face me in Civ 5, but give me some time to get used to it. Not being able to pile a billion units in one square kind of ruins a few of my strategies.

Have you ever met or seen someone who looks like, sounds like, acts like someone else you know? It's freaky, isn't it? Especially that brief moment where you suddenly realize why they were so familiar.

The United States and other countries constantly ridicule Canada for not having as large a military as them. However, we have reasons for this.

Canada has a military base in the most northern settlement in the world: Alert, Nunavut. Why? We've seen enough Christmas specials to know that Christmas is ALWAYS in danger of being cancelled. Let's see the Grinch get past the full force of the Secret Canadian Special Forces, though.

You can thank us when you wake up on Christmas morning and find that Santa managed to deliver your presents once again this year.

Still don't believe we're protecting Santa? Then why do we get all his mail?

Dumbledore: Good evening and welcome to Hogwarts! This year's houses: where all the smart, attractive and/or weird people go -- Ravenclaw! Where all the evil, ugly, and/or stupid people go -- Slytherin! Where all the cool, important, and/or plot-relevant people go -- Gryffindor! And where everyone else goes -- Ryan Stiles, I mean, Hufflepuff! And I'm your Headmaster Dumbledore, welcome to Hogwarts! Come on, let's have some fun.

Why do shooting games always need to be so graphic? Why can't they make a shooting game where your enemies don't explode into a massive sea of blood, body parts flying haphazardly as they cry in sheer anguish for death's sweet embrace?

I like killing imaginary video game characters as much as the next guy, but why do games have to try to inflict war veteran post-traumatic stress disorder upon me? I'm into things being realistic and all, but what happened to playing games for fun?

Long ago, on Christmas Day 2005, a young lad named SPIRIT received two particular Christmas presents: a wallet and an iRiver .mp3 player. It was on this day that a mighty fellowship was born: The Fellowship of Things SPIRIT Carries Around in His Pockets. This mighty fellowship would help SPIRIT through many battles, occasionally adding or losing members, but always making SPIRIT proud to live in a society when men's pants had decent pockets.

Here is a list of all noteworthy members of the fellowship:

Wallet iRiver (replaced by iPod Touch) Blistex (joined the fellowship in spring 2007 to combat the side effects of Accutane, left in fall 2007) Canadian cellphone (joined fellowship in November 2007, left in August 2010, expected to return in June 2011) iPod Touch (joined fellowship in April 2008) Keys to university residence (joined the fellowship in September 2008, left in April 2009) Pokéwalker (tagged along with the fellowship since April 2010, officially joined in September 2010) Keys to French apartment (joined fellowship in September 2010, expected to leave in June 2011) French cellphone (joined fellowship in September 2010, expected to leave in June 2011) Nintendo DS (honorary member) It is with deep sorrow, though, that I announce that my wallet, the only original member of the fellowship, will be retiring soon. He is worn and old and his zipper is detaching. Prophecies foretell that he will only last until December 2010, when he will be replaced by a newer wallet. It won't be the same, though. Forever the fellowship will feel as though SPIRIT has a hole in his leg where the wallet once was -- a hole the new wallet will never truly fill.
Rest in peace, old friend, rest in peace.

Oh and uh, let's get all the "what it's got in its nassty little pocketses" out of our systems now, shall we?

When I first heard that some people had gone ahead and made a full-length comedic musical based on the Harry Potter saga, I initially had incredibly low expectations for the project. Just a few days ago, though, I decided to sit down and check it out and gosh darn if it isn't one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I highly recommend watching it for Potter fans everywhere, but a word of warning, there is a bit of foul language in it. It's called A Very Potter Musical and it has a sequel A Very Potter Sequel, both of which are outstanding.

But don't just take my word for it. Check it out at your local video hosting site! *Reading Rainbow transition sound*

Ah, SPIRIT has homework again, so you know what that means? Yep, a procrastinatory trip down memory lane looking at some gems from his Brickshelf gallery.

So turns out I'm going to have a new neighbour spending the night in my building. Don't know if you've heard of him, goes by the name of Hu Jintao. He's apparently a pretty big deal, like the president of China or something.

Yeah, that's right, Hu Jintao is my neighbour now. B) Granted, I'm in a part of the building that's completely locked off from him and there are police EVERYWHERE so I'll probably never see him, but that's a lot closer than most of you will probably ever get.

Now that I think about it, Mr. Jintao and I have had a lot of close run-ins lately what with me being near both the G8 and the G20. Lot of freaky coincidences here...

So, as most of you probably don't know, when Tahu killed all the Rahkshi in the last comic with the golden armour, he actually gained their powers. Now, according to Greg, not every type of Rahkshi would have been sent on the invasion of Bara Magna so he probably doesn't have all 42 powers, but if you were in charge of the storyline, which powers would you give Tahu, which ones would you not give him, and why? (For your convenience, here's my Flash Kraata Maker).

    So here's what I think:

Fear: Yes. Tahu seems like the kind of guy who would be fine with scaring his enemies away, plus the Fear Rahkshi was red.
Disintegration: No. This means of destruction is a bit too subtle for Tahu.
Poison: No way José. Rahkshi poison and Tahu do not mix well.
Fragmentation: Absolutely. I don't think Tahu would be satisfied if he didn't get the ability to make things blow up after his ordeal.
Hunger: Yes. I think Tahu would have no problem draining power from foes, especially since it's a fairly non-lethal way of beating them.
Anger: No, not unless he could use it on himself, lol.
Weather Control: No, this seems more like something a Toa of Water would use.
Elasticity: No, Tahu is a bit too proud to absorb hits like a cartoon character
Heat Vision: (He already has this one).
Illusion: Yeah, Tahu has been known to use trickery.
Teleportation: Yeah, I mean, the world's a big place, so how else is he going to get around?
Quick Healing: Yes, Tahu probably could've used this one eons ago.
Laser Vision: Yes, I mean, he has heat vision, so why not?
Gravity: Yes, Tahu could use it as a sort of telekinesis.
Electricity: Yes. We've seen Fire and Lightning with Jaller so why not with Tahu?
Sonics: No, doesn't seem like a Tahu power.
Vacuum: No, Fire doesn't do too well when it comes to vacuums.
Plasma: Yes, I mean, that would sort of get him back to his original power level, wouldn't it?
Magnetism: No, just doesn't fit with him.
Fire Resistance: No, he has this one innately anyway.
Ice Resistance: Yes, I think he'd get a real kick out of using this one against Kopaka.
Mind Reading: Yes. I mean, half the characters can already read minds anyway without any adequately explained reason as to why or how (I'm looking at you Takanuva and Gali) so I could see Tahu joining the club.
Shapeshifting: No, this one seems a bit much for a Toa.
Darkness: No way. Even if he did get this one, there's no way he'd use it.
Plant Control: Nah, unless he only used it to grow Madu Cabolo, I don't think this is really a power for a Toa of Fire.
Molecular Disruption: No. Once again, too subtle for Tahu's taste.
Chain Lightning: No, not if he gets Electricity. This one would just be too redundant and powerful.
Cyclone: Yes, I can just imagine the fire tornado he could make with this one.
Density Control: Yes, I think it'd be great to see Tahu just go intangible and be unable to be hit one moment and then become super-dense for an attack of his own the next.
Chameleon: Yes, while it's not quite the Huna he used to have, it'd still be good for sneaking around.
Accuracy: Yes, especially when Tahu gets really hotheaded he'd need this one.
Rahi Control: No. Seems like a slap to the face for 2001 if he got this one.
Insect Control: No, it's pretty much the same thing as Rahi control anyway.
Stasis Field: No, freezing things isn't Tahu's style.
Limited Invulnerability: No, this one's a bit much for a Toa.
Power Scream: Yes. Tahu likes to shoot his mouth off at times, so why not have him do it in style?
Dodge: Yes. Jaller sort of had this as a Toa Inika, and I can see Tahu using a similar strategy.
Silence: Yes, I imagine he'd also use this one to cheat and win in arguments by just silencing whomever he was arguing with.
Adaptation: No, seems a bit much for a Toa.
Slowness: Yes, largely this power would work like the Vahi, I think.
Confusion: No. Tahu's usually the confused one, he wouldn't need his enemies becoming confused too.
Sleep: Yes, makes for a lot of easy wins.

Guns, scary elves, and bail; suspect freed

    By The Canadian Press

MONTREAL - A man who allegedly armed himself with high-powered weapons because he believed elves were stalking him has been granted bail.

David Abitbol will have to respect a number of conditions which include surrendering his firearms and not using electronic devices like computers to communicate with others.

His father has also agreed to post $25,000 bail.

Testimony at his bail hearing revealed that Abitbol thought he saw elves everywhere and needed the firepower to keep them at bay.

Found this article on Yahoo! News. The article goes on to mention a few things which I can't post on the site, but suffice to say that he's been caught doing some bad things. Now tell me this article isn't the sort of thing to appear at the end of an Artemis Fowl book.
  20. SPIRIT
A little something I thought of today with regards to being unique: there's a difference between standing out and sticking out. I have great respect for the former and great disdain for the latter.

This has been philosophy with SPIRIT. Tune in next time to see an explanation of why everyone in the world is incredibly stupid, especially SPIRIT.
  21. SPIRIT
So my body has decided that it likes to play jokes on me and it has formed a cluster of acne on my forehead in the shape of a lightning bolt. Doesn't even have the decency to supply me with magic powers to compensate.
  22. SPIRIT
So I'm going through some old files and I find this. You might've already seen something similar to it in a previous blog entry, but here's a longer/alternate version I wrote for some unknown reason and rather than let it rot on my hard drive, I thought I'd post it here.

    Takua:
    Little town
    It's a quiet village
    Ev'ry day
    Feels like it's so slow
    Little town
    Full of little people
    Waking up to say:

    Ta-Matoran:
    Hello!
    Hello!
    Hello! Hello! Hello!

    Takua:
There goes the farmer with his cart, like always
Full of lava just like goo-ah!
    Ev'ry morning just the same
Since the morning that we came
    To this small volcanic town

    Tiribomba:
    Good Morning, Takua!

    Takua:
    'Morning, Tiribomba.

    Tiribomba:
    How’s the song coming along?

    Takua:
Not bad. Due to the Maori phonetics of my name I have to be pretty creative with some of the rhymes, but-

    Tiribomba:
That's nice. Agni! The briquettes! Hurry up!

    Ta-Matoran:
Look there he goes that guy is strange, no question
    Even weirder than Krakua
Does not fit in at all
    Always carving on some wall
No denying he's an odd guy, Takua

    Ta-Matoran 1:
    Hello

    Ta-Matoran 2:
    Good day

    Ta-Matoran 1:
    How is your Rahi?

    Ta-Matoran 3:
    Hello

    Ta-Matoran 4:
    Good day

    Ta-Matoran 3:
    How is your scythe?

    Ta-Matoran 5:
    I need squid eggs

    Ta-Matoran 6:
    That's too expensive

    Takua:
There must be more than this volcanic life

    Ta-Matoran:
Look there he goes that guy is so peculiar
    I hope that Disney doesn’t sue-ah
    Trav’ling all around
    Even going underground
What a puzzle to us all is Takua
  23. SPIRIT
So yeah, today's my half birthday. I can hardly believe it's been six months already since then and yet, so much has happened in that time.

I'd also like to take this time to mention three groups of people I don't like:

    1) Music snobs. Who do you think you are?! What gives you the right?!

    2) People who sign into IM programs with their status set to as "Away". Who do you think you are?! What gives you the right?!

    3) People who make short online videos with intros that are like twenty seconds long. Who do you think you are?! What gives you the right?!
