This is an essay that I've been working on for... sadly, almost two years now. Writing it was one of the reasons I signed up for BZPower in the 1st place! But it sat on my shelf, and, after a few revisions, I've decided to release it into the world. I'm not sure if my views today are 100% in accordance to the arguments I've made herein, but they're generally close-enough & I'm willing to stand by most of what I claim here. To begin, Bionicle is... not well-known for depicting a large variety of female characters; mainly because most female characters are exclusively confined to the Water element (at least when it comes to the female characters that get set and story space) and are subsequently saddled with Water's stereotypes. In particular, Bionicle is lacking in positive depictions of female leaders. Pomegranate talked about this in a much earlier post: As mentioned, Gali, Hahli, Macku, Vhisola, and Tuyet are not leaders (at least officially). Helryx is one, and Roodaka, while a leader (and someone who I'll probably talk about in a post after this one) is both a villain and has her own representational hangups. While I could talk about Helryx, I'm instead going to talk about a character that is given greater focus and who serves as an example of what happens when female leaders do exist but aren't acknowledged. Yes, we're talking about Toa Nokama. Nokama is not the leader of the Toa Metru, yet she suspiciously does everything an actual leader would do (as well as things the actual leader of the Metru should be doing but isn't). For the sake of simplicity, I'm only going to concern myself with how Nokama is depicted in "Bionicle 2: Legends of Metru Nui" and "Bionicle 3: Web of Shadows". I might veer into comic book territory in a separate post. Why do I choose the films and not the books and/or comics? I’m choosing the films for a variety of reasons. For one, the films probably reached a larger audience of children than the novels did, and thus, from a broader cultural standpoint, the films are perhaps more important. Plus, it dishes out more of the story than the comics do. Finally, given my preclusion for being long-winded, this material is more than enough for me to work with. Comparing the depictions of Nokama across all Bionicle’s media would be time consuming and ultimately pointless, because how she is depicted in the novels is going to be different than the video games and the comics. (Just as a note, I'll reference most of my observations--the ones that didn't slip my mind, anyway--with a timestamp, so you can follow along with me, if you want). For starters, Nokama is the first Matoran who Toa Lhikan gives a Toa Stone to (LoMN:3:05). In doing so, he tells her to "guide them with your wisdom." That Nokama is chosen first singles her out (admittedly Vakama, by virtue of being chosen last, is also accorded a special position), especially given the advice Lhikan gives her. Guiding her fellow Toa could be taken as a directive to lead them, especially since none of the other Toa are given advice that singles them out as leaders also. Vakama, treated as the actual leader of the Toa Metru, is told to "save the heart of Metru Nui" (LoMN:7:55). While Vakama's task is important (perhaps the most important directive any of the Toa are given), it does not explicitly call him out for a leadership position. This isn't the first time Nokama comes first, as it happens. She is also the first Matoran to place their Toa Stone into the Suva, inadvertently calling the other Matoran to action to do so themselves (LoMN:1147). When Vakama receives a vision (from Mata Nui, don't let Greg fool you with his talk of glitches ), all the other Toa are convinced he's gone haywire; only Nokama decides that the visions should be trusted (LoMN:14:54). And it is partly on Nokama's word that the Metru go along with the plot to find the Great Disks. Vakama suggested it, but none of the others apart from Nokama appear enthusiastic about the idea. This isn’t really a majority vote either; Vakama and Nokama is still 2 against 4. Onewa states that he's "doing this for Lhikan, no one else," but this line doesn't follow--the Great Disks have nothing to do with Lhikan to Onewa's knowledge. Onewa is also one of the most emotionally defensive of the Metru; what he says isn't always how he feels (for example, he cares about his brothers after they've been captured, yet he disparages them the entire time). His reluctance could be a cover; Nokama's leadership qualities convince him somewhat, but he doesn't want to admit it. I want to shift gears a moment to when the Toa are tasked with crossing the sea of Protodermis. Here, Vakama (future leader of the group) freezes up and issues no commands to his team; when Onewa asks "what do we do now," Whenua, not Vakama, answers him (LoMN:19:02). Rather, it is Nokama who tries to lead the group out of danger; after a quick "follow me" (LoMN:19:12), she directs Vakama to shoot at the statue of Lhikan, ultimately securing escape for herself, Vakama, and Matau. Nokama also takes initiative to use the Le-Metru chute system to escape Nidhiki and Krekka, with Matau and Vakama following her example (LoMN:23:05). When the chute's flow changes direction, Nokama is the one who leads the trio out of danger, using her Hydro Blades to catapult them out of the chute (LoMN: 28:00). When the three need to travel to Po-Metru, Nokama seeks out the Vahki transport to use; Vakama (the future leader) instead preoccupies himself with the presently-useless Great Disks, almost missing the transport altogether (LoMN:29:59). When they finally get to Po-Metru, Nokama becomes the first Toa Metru to discover her mask power (something the film treats as an important plot point), which she then uses to track down Lhikan by getting help from the Kikanalo (LoMN:35:26). After this incident, Nokama proceeds to do absolutely nothing of consequence for the rest of the film (don't worry, there's always the next film), as when reunited, the Metru are lead by directives given by Turaga Lhikan, and once Makuta reveals himself, the film's focus switches to Vakama exclusively for the rest of the film. Still, it's a rather impressive run; this is almost half the film's running time! Most of these points could be condensed down into "Nokama does something, then some (or all) of the Metru decide to follow her," and I'm sure it sounded more than a little repetitive. But my point was to show that Nokama's leadership qualities in B2:LoMN were not a one-time event. In a vacuum, the end of B2:LoMN shows that the Toa are, at the very least, taking turns as leader. No one is explicitly called the leader at any rate, and while Nokama shows her value at the beginning of the film, Vakama shows his value at the end of it; forging the Vahi, battling Makuta, following the light, and being the first to give up his Toa power to awaken the Matoran. Who lead the team depended on whose qualities were best fit for the situation, reinforcing Bionicle’s themes of Unity and Duty (if not Destiny). Unfortunately canon, and B3:WoS, have to go ahead and ruin that interpretation. The film begins with Vakama as the definitive leader of the Metru; trying and ultimately failing to rescue the Matoran. Instead, the whole team is captured, and Vakama decides to blame himself rather than motivate the team to look for an answer. While Norik offers support and a potential way out of the mutation, Vakama rejects that offer, instead deciding to abandon and betray his teammates in favour of seductress Roodaka. Granted, Vakama has been suffering depression and lack of confidence for two films in a row and has just been rendered more bestial (whatever that means) by the Hordika venom. The Vakama of B2:LoMN isn’t a perfect leader, but in certain situations he can lead the team effectively in a positive way. But the Vakama of B3:WoS is categorically unfit to be a leader, between getting his team captured, abandoning and betraying his team, and his prior history of low-self esteem and freezing up in dire situations in B2:LoMN. Let me reiterate—this is not Vakama’s fault, per se, but it means that he is not a good choice for a leader. Nokama’s leadership skills, however, are still in full force. She is the one who insists the Metru must believe in Keetongu, even as Vakama and Matau doubt her (WoS:19:04). She also speaks on behalf of the team on staying out of the Great Temple while mutated (WoS:26:31). When the team enters the coliseum to rescue Vakama, Nokama is the first one to call out to him (WoS:46:22). When diplomacy fails and the Toa charge their Rhotuka, it is Nokama who gives the order (WoS:47:25). When Onewa doubts they should keep charging the spinner (instead of firing it), it is Nokama he directs the question to, implying she is in command (WoS:47:34). When they do fire the Rhotuka, it’s on Nokama’s order (WoS:47:43). Given what results, it is implied that the plan to use the Rhotuka to fly is also Nokama’s doing, given that she gives the order to let go (WoS:48:03). Web of Shadows ends with the Toa not only accepting Vakama back into the team but letting him stay on as leader. This is crucial—the virtue of Unity required that the Toa accept Vakama back, but there is no reason why he had to return as leader when his prior experience in the role resulted in such failure. In Web of Shadows, Vakama fails his way upwards, as you will, in that his failures as a leader result not in him being reprimanded, but instead in his authority being upheld without further question. Ultimately, this series of events begs one simple question: Why is Nokama not the “official” leader of the Toa Metru? She approves missions for the team to follow, leads them out of dangerous situations through quick-thinking, and is the first to learn important aspects of being a Toa that her teammates then follow by example. What else is required of a leader? Who among the Metru can seriously boast being a more qualified applicant? Greg, the Wikia, or the canon in general, have explained the above with a mix of "it was Vakama's destiny to lead the Metru" and "Nokama was the Deputy Leader of the Metru, and was acknowledged to be good enough to be the actual leader by herself and her teammates, but decided to step aside from the role because it was Vakama's destiny." In other words, a heaping load of bull. Destiny is important to Bionicle, no two-ways about it, but Vakama's actual destiny is shown to us; forge the Vahi (for himself) and save the Matoran of Metru Nui (with the other Metru). Nothing about his destiny requires he be the leader, other than the fact that he's: A) The protagonist B) Male C) The red toy These three points are interrelated, but to give a counterexample, Matoro was arguably the protagonist of the "Ignition" arc, he was male, and he was one of the most marketed of his team (though not red, both he and Vakama are right up front in the posters). Yet he isn't the leader of his team; he doesn't have to be, and no one expects it of him. His role is even more important than Vakama’s but said role is not diminished by the fact he’s not the leader. This is all to show Bionicle’s strengths and weaknesses as a storytelling medium. We have strong female leaders in this story. But while the story-verse is gracious enough to treat these female leaders not as a rarity or an odd-quirk, it also doesn’t acknowledge their contribution nor fully reward them for their efforts as often as I think is probably warranted. And that's it! I regret to inform you that T-shirts declaring 'I read Mukaukau Nuva's essay & all I got was this lousy T-shirt' are not forthcoming, but I wish they were. Thanks for reading
Favorite track(s) from the Web of Shadows score?

After 14, 13, and 12 years respectively, we finally have all three Bionicle film soundtracks available as full-length score albums. 'Tis a glorious day indeed. While Legends of Metru Nui is still my favorite of the three, the Web of Shadows score is absolutely astonishing and is my very close second-favorite. It not only evolves the themes from the first two films beautifully, but also expands on the darker elements of those scores to perfectly accommodate this movie's darker tone. Unlike LoMN, I'm not quite able to narrow down which singular track I love the most. I can, however, narrow it down to three: "Web of Shadows" - Epic and menacing introduction. "The Falling Tears" - I love how the Toa's motif from the second film evolves into a fuller theme in this film. This is definitely my favorite rendition of it in this movie. "Off to Mata Nui" - A perfect way to close the trilogy. The final evolution of the main theme from the first two films makes me want to cry every time. Additional major highlights: "Sidorak and Roodaka" "Flying Escape" "The Great Temple" "Strength Comes From Unity" As usual, feel free to share which track or set of tracks is your favorite once you've gotten a chance to listen to the album one or two times.
LoMN and WoS Soundtracks are coming!
Pohaturon posted a topic in Bionicle DiscussionSome of you may have notices, but Nathan Furst just posted about the soundtracks for Legends of Metru Nui and Web of Shadows on his Facebook page. For the link-averse, this is what he said: "An update regarding future #Bioniclesoundtracks is coming soon! #LOMN #WOS" Of course that 'update' could be that they're never coming, but I highly doubt that would be the case. It was great seeing the fantastic music of MoL getting a proper release recently, and based on that many of us hoped the other two films would get the same treatment.

Hopefully I'm not stealing anyone else's ideas, if I am please tell me so I can change it. Reviewers would be nice! Anyway... DVD Scene Selection: Jaller: Hey Lewa0111, what's a DVD? Lewa0111: Shut up. Anyway: Chapter 1: Vakama's Boring Lecture/Roodaka breaks the Contract Chapter 2: The Toa turn into Gibbering Beasts that Stalk the Night (AKA Hordika)/Roodaka's Great Plan Chapter 3: The Key to Nongu?/Roodaka makes Vakama turn Evil (That didn't give anything away, did it?) But I think our pilot is a little...well...he needs to have his license revoked. Matau: Hey! I was only order taking. Vakama was the one order giving. Yoda: That type of speech, copyrighted have I. *leaves* Nokama: Regardless of how gracefully, I still look prettyful as ever! Does my armor match the color of the air, do you think? Hi, guys! This year is the 10th anniversary on the third Bionicle movie, Bionicle 3: Web of Shadows! It is about the Toa Metru trying to save the Matoran, who are in a coma, but they were trapped and mutated by the evil Visorak into the animal-like Toa Hordika. Despite the mutation, the Toa are still determined heroes. With the help of the Rahaga, they have to find a creature called the Keetongu and fight against the Visorak and their leaders, Sidorak and Roodaka, in order to change back to normal. I know that some of you guys remembered and said that movie isn't the best of the movie series, but I'll bet some of you do liked the movie. True it's sad in some ways, like Vakama betraying the Toa and helping the bad guys and the Toa purposely unleashed their dreaded and powerful archenemy, Makuta, who got out of their prison (and goes to take over the universe), but the movie shows some good character development and how Makuta got out of his prison. Anyway, the movie came out in October 11th, 2005, which was ten years ago, and is the last Bionicle to be made by Miramax before Bionicle: The Legend Reborn. So, how can we celebrate it? A birthday cake? What is your favorite part of the movie if you watched it? For me, I liked the part where Matau was complaining and that made Keetongu laugh.
The Greatest WoS SpoofIt's November 2005, and BZPower is in its heyday. 15 year old SPIRIT finishes off his trifecta of comedies with a vastly improved writing style. The jokes are original, the narrator gets a personality (which, admittedly, does go a little Douglas Adams at points), and there are even custom emoticons! Obviously, it's not perfect, but it's definitely an improvement from where things began. So sit back and relax, 'cause here we go again. -SPIRIT Chapter 1- Toa Resume Quest (The movie begins with a large close up of Makuta's red Protodermis cage.) Roodaka: Makuta... Director: What have you done?!?! The movie just started and you've messed it up already! Vakama always gets to say "Gathered friends, blah, blah, blah" first! ... GAH! I'm getting some coffee. (The Director pulls a mug out of his director's beret and walks over to the conveniently placed coffeemaker sticking out of the Great Barrier. Roodaka proceeds to scratch a piece of Protodermis off of Makuta's cage, which screeches at such a high frequency that the Director's mug shatters, drenching him in scalding hot coffee. A shard of the cage breaks off and lands conveniently on the ground where Turaga Vakama is telling the story with dramatic music in the background.) Turaga Vakama: Gathered friends, blah blah, blah. Director: Vakama: Listen again to our legend of the Bionicle... or if you would prefer, listen to this great elevator music. (Vakama switches the dramatic background music to elevator music.) Vakama: In the time before time, six mighty Toa (mightiest of which was me) vanquished the Makuta, encasing him in Protodermis held tight by the force of their combined elemental powers and a whole bunch of duct tape. Before becoming senile old men- Nokama: Vakama: What? ... The Toa united in a dutiful pledge to rescue the Matoran who were imprisoned by the Makuta. And so they returned to their once glorious home with every intention of enacting a great rescue, but Makuta had not left the sleeping Matoran unprotected. Their resting place was guarded by a ruthless king, a horde of poisoners (if that is a real word)- Director: Half the words in Bionicle aren't real! Takua: Actually, precisely 3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375% are made up, and that number is also pie. Funny how that works out, isn't it? (When the Director suddenly realizes that Takua has returned to torment him for the entire movie again, he promptly gets up and puts his mouth under the coffeemaker.) Vakama: ... And a malevolent queen... who was actually just a viceroy, but since political correctness seems to be frowned upon, I won't say anything... ... And now the noble Toa (noblest of which was me) must face a web of shadows... stupid us for not hiring janitors... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Title Scene) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (The Toa Metru are riding in the Lhikan II in rather dark and stormy weather. Fortunately for them, it was particularly dark and stormy weather so they couldn't see the sea monster that was in pursuit of them. Had they, they would have most likely peed their pants (if they were able to and if they wore pants, that is) and they would have screamed like girls-) Nokama: (What? ... Anyway, a tidal wave knocks everyone out of the boat and rudely interrupts Matau's game of poker, which shows what a great pilot he was... not. As the Toa bob around in the waves, Vakama tries to grab onto the camera for support, however, in doing so, he accidentally drowns the cameraman, Bob. No one was actually sorry about this because Bob had notoriously bad breath. The Toa regain consciousness in a pile of junk on the shore of Metru Nui. Onewa is the first to emerge from it.) Onewa: Well that stunk... Whenua puked 3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375 times... I wonder if there's any significance to that. (But before Takua can point out that it's his favourite number, the Director distracts him by splashing him in the face with a mug of burning hot coffee.) Nuju: It would appear there was an error in our transport. Pilot error. (Told you so.) Matau: Hey! Vakama was cheating! He had six cards... all aces! Nokama: No need to be critical Matau, regardless of how gracefully, we made it here. Matau: Whatever... hey, could somebody dig me out? (Whenua digs him out and while there is still dust in the air, he swipes Matau's wallet without him knowing.) Matau: Hey! Give my wallet back, Whenua! (Never mind...) Toa Vakama: Are we going to stand around all night or are we going to rescue the Matoran? Onewa: Actually, we were going to sit around all night. Vakama: Onewa: In massage chairs. Vakama: Okay! Director: Onewa: Floating massage chairs. Director: Fine... (The Toa float off into the main city, but at that moment, the hover chairs decided that it would be an excellent idea for them to spontaneously combust. The Toa escape the wreckage and look around.) Matau: What's with all the webs? Not exactly encouraging my Toa-hero SPIRIT. (At that point, a bunch of Rahi stampede by. One of them flies right over the Toa's heads, all of whom duck except for Whenua, and so the Rahi accidentally flies up his nose. Inside Whenua's head, it finds a large vacant space where it decides to curl up and nest. However, it soon commits suicide out of loneliness and exits via his left ear.) Nokama: What was that? Director: Matau: Well, there goes the old neighbourhood... and Mr. Rogers too. Nokama: Everyone else: Nokama: Whenua: The Archives must have been breached. Onewa: What did you have in there? Whenua: Everything... most of it dangerous. Vakama: Did you have a Kane Ra? Whenua: Yes. Vakama: Did you have a Hoi? Whenua: Yes. Vakama: Did you have a zbwqfp29? Whenua: Yes Vakama: HA! Got you! That doesn't even exist! Whenua: So? We still had one. Vakama: Whenua: The Onu-Metru Archive housed a specimen of every kind of Rahi ever discovered... even some that haven't been discovered, some that are yet to be discovered, some that we discovered but forgot about, some that- Director: Whenua: Well, at least it used to... Vakama: And the webs? Whenua: The janitor union's on strike, but it was mostly the Visorak- Nuju: Aha! They work for the union, I knew it all along... Whenua: Right... Anyway, they're nasty creatures. Onewa: Coming from you, that's not good. Whenua: Hey! Onewa: What? I only called you a nasty creature. Whenua: Oh, good. Nokama: But what does it change? Vakama: Nothing. We go to the Coliseum, we rescue the Matoran, we make a quick stop at McDonald's, we leave. Whenua: Or get pulverized. Nuju: It is a possibility... Vakama Sarcastically: Yeah? And so's the possibility of me winning the lottery. (Vakama, feeling very pleased with himself, thinking that he has fooled SPIRIT, looks around hopefully, trying to see if his reverse psychology worked. It did not.) Vakama: ... We've faced the Makuta and won. I really doubt a few crusty relics are going to give us much trouble. Agreed? Other Toa: No. Vakama: Great! Follow me! (Vakama's reverse reverse psychology fails him and he and the other Toa are all hit by a bunch of Oohnorak Rhotuka.) Vakama: Can't... move... or stop... talking like... Captain... Kirk... (All the Toa fall over and land in a big pile.) Vakama: Is everyone alright? Matau: No, I had a bunch of rusty nails in my pocket and they've gone right into my leg. You're a complete moron Vakama. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberry. Nokama: Ew... rusty nails... Bickering won't get us out of this, Matau. Matau: No, but think-talking before charging straight into a trap might have. Vakama: I took one step. ONE STEP! I hardly see how that's charging... Bionicle OSTs and Scores

I'm working on a bit of a tribute project for good ol' Bionicle, and I've been trying to find high-quality downloads of Nathan Furst's scoring for the movies, as well as the score for The Legend Reborn. If possible, I'd like it to be official enough that some support goes to the original composers rather than just ripping an MP3 from a host site. The downloads and links from BioMedia Project seem to have some issues for me, unfortunately. Any other fanvid makers out there who can point me in the direction of some good links? Thanks!

A brief analysis of Matau in WoD
ARROW404 posted a topic in Bionicle Storyline & TheoriesThe changes between Matau in LoMn and WoS are interesting, and I’ve found myself analyzing him the last times I watched either. In Web of Shadows, Matau suddenly becomes much darker, losing his Airy quirkiness and gaining personality traits more comparable to those of Ta and Po characters. The change itself doesn’t strike me very hard, but when I think about their explanations, Matau’s story suddenly becomes a little sad. In WoS, Matau is always complaining and grumbling about Vakama, and develops a pronounced pessimistic view towards everything. He’s questioning Vakama’s leadership, which I took to be partially due to lack of attention, in addition to his clear impatience towards Vakama's new attitude. He wants to be noticed and acknowledged by the others too. Worse, however, is how he reacts to Nokama. When she comments that they made it to Metru Nui, he replies sarcastically with “whatever”. When they’re in the cocoons, he rolls his eyes when she says it’s not Vakama’s fault. When Nokama says they’ll be fine as Hordika, he outright flips out. All of us know that Matau had feelings for Nokama (screw canon!) in LoMn, and in WoS, she’s always defending and worrying about Vakama. Matau is deeply jealous because of that, and as a result, he becomes aggressive and sarcastic as a defense mechanism, burying the feelings he has for her in an attempt to convince himself that they aren’t there. Every once in a while, Matau attempts some humor (e.g. “Guys, look it’s amazing! It’s Keetonguuuuuu! …. Not.”). These attempts are always met by aggression, sarcasm or a life lesson from Norik. He’s still trying to be himself, but everybody is making it difficult for him, and as a result his defense mechanism kicks in again. When Nuju comments on the sounds of the night, Matau responds with more sarcasm. When he’s told to be patient, he blows up and runs ahead of everyone. Even when Keetongu found something he said funny, Matau covers it up! I never appreciated how much duress Matau was under in this movie when I was a kid. Now that I’m looking at it like this, though, I can appreciate just how hard it all was for the Toa of Air. This movie wasn’t just dark atmospherically and thematically. Vakama wasn’t the only one battling the beast within. There was a dark beast in all the characters, but in Matau, it manifested itself as a psychological issue so ordinary to us that it escaped notice.

My lovely (and I mean that in a brotherly way) sister, Hali Historian, and I created this due to popular demand. The whole thing when from concept to completion in under 24 hours (and we weren't working on it the whole time) I made it using Windows Movie Maker (A royal pain to use, let me tell you), GIMP and Audacity.
