why is the laser lance a lance?

Hello.

i was just wondering, why is umbra's weapon called a lance?

it's more of a staff, or a pole arm.

it even sort of looks like a bow to me.

Sounds cooler. Marketing and whatnot. 

 

Alternatively - Lance is the weapon's given name, as opposed to Phil or Derek? But same reasoning, it has a nice ring to it.

First off we can see they used Hewkii's axe, and Longsword and a Rhotuka Spinner. But they didn't have a proper name.

Ironically enough, 2 years later Takanuva the Toa of Light gets a new toy but because of Umbra, his weapon had to be called Power Lance since the name other name was taken.
Umbra shouldn't have been made.

Cannot say I know, but I do like the variety and uniqueness  it adds. The real-life lances page on Wikipedia is pretty interesting, though.

 

Maybe some toys do. At least, maybe some very special ones.

Probably because of the way he uses it. He charges forward and tries to land a solid poke.
