OOC: It's kind of funny how so many people are jumping all over the space race, when they don't even know that much about the people they're going to be space-racing against.IC: It had been almost two months since the storms first cleared, and it was business as usual in Varangia. The disappearance of the storms had been put down to a shift in a long-term weather pattern, set up, the scientists had decided, by anomalous wind and water currents. There was some speculation in the streets as to when the waters beyond the storms would be explored - there was no question that it would be done eventually, but there was always the possibility that the Queen would hold out for some special occasion to actually get the job done.In the meantime, the Varangians farmed potatoes, caught fish, and occasionally killed each other with sniper rifles over matters of honor, unaware of the other civilizations across the ocean from their home.

OOCI believe now would be a good time to start in the first motions of the myth arc.IC [General]The nations of the world had begun to meet each other; it was inevitable. No doubt their scientists were scrambling about with questions; what long term effects would the clouds leaving have? Would plagues break out? How would the environment react? Why did they go away, and so quickly? Why were they there in the first place? And of course, many of those questions would never be answered fully. Best that it was that way.Any radar installations would detect that a meteor shower had begun across the planet; small asteroids mostly, many burning in the atmosphere while a few impacted. No causalities or property damage was reported, but people who found the rocks noted some odd things; mainly, the fact that the rocks were cold, even though they should still be molten hot from their trip through the atmosphere. Second, the rocks looked like they were solid aluminum; an astronomical oddity in space, and the fact that they had gotten through the atmosphere untouched and cold was something that was down right disturbing.OOCAlright guys, these things will be happening about monthly; some special event will take place, and you guys get something special from it in limited supply. What you do with it is entirely up to you. This time around you get refrigeration rocks; they feel and look like aluminum, but they have the special property of never having their temperature raised above 5 degrees Celsius. This comes with a catch; thanks to the conservation of energy, that energy has to do something, and the energy is emitted as low-level radiation. So if you're going use it for refrigeration, I suggest you cover it in lead. I'd say you guys get ten kilos of this stuff each; it sucks in the ambient heat pretty quickly, so you could use it as a heat sink or a fridge or whatnot.

IC: The Aquileonese reaction was varied--some companies took meteors they could get and sent them to their private labs, while the governments siezed most of the meteors and began analyzing them. It didn't take long for them to realize that the rocks emitted radiation, and they were quick to warn the public.Quietly, the meteors were shipped away to be stored until a good opportunity presented itself.~+~Meanwhile, a military development team made a startling discovery: certain materials were capable of absorbing radio waves. The information was instantly classified to the highest level and compartmentalized under a rotating code name and passcodes, and a development team was set to finding ways of developing the best ways to make aircraft invisible to radar.OOC: Beginning development of stealth technology, 20 IP. OOC: It should be noted that meteorites generally aren't that hot, actually - if they don't burn up when entering the atmosphere, what reaches the ground is just sort of lukewarm. Also, I'm going to go ahead and assume that radioactive elements that could never really be used for an effective nuke exist in slightly higher quantities than those that could be used for that.IC: Given the average temperature of the ground in Varangia, the curious properties of these meteorites were not noticed until an attempt was made to analyze one with a mass spectrometer - when the machine tried to vaporize a portion of the meteorite, it didn't. No vaporization, no melting, the metal wasn't even glowing.Based on the average Varangian understanding of physics, that should have been impossible. The air wasn't hot, nothing touching the metal was hot. When conventional physics fails, the next step is, rather obviously, to unconventional physics. Two decades prior to this, a material that had been dubbed "Thorium" had been found to produce a curious fogging effect on x-ray plates, and some had theorized that this fogging was due to the release of energy-laden particles from the material. Given that the meteorite wasn't giving off heat, it wasn't giving off light, and it wasn't vaporizing like it was supposed to, the scientists at the Royal Academy decided that this invisible energy might be worth a try.The meteorite was put in position, the mass spectrometer was set up, and an x-ray plate was positioned nearby. When the experiment was over, and the plate was examined, a plainly discernible fog was visible - evidence, the theorists announced, that the meteorites converted heat to the same invisible energy emitted naturally by rare materials like Thorium.Within the week, the meteorites that fell on Varangia had been rounded up and, to the knowledge of the public, the meteorites disappeared. At the Royal Academy, however, scientists were hard at work trying to find a use for this new material.OOC: Varangia, alas, didn't have a Marie Curie who got cancer from spending too much time close to radioactive material, so they have no idea that radiation is harmful. 'swhat happens when radioactive materials are curiously scarce on the planet.

OOCYeah, me and Koth kinda-sorta agreed that the rocks just give out x-rays and small amounts of other EM radiation like microwaves and gamma rays. Not enough to be deadly on first contact but prolonged exposure isn't too great.

In the case that civilians had already gotten their hands on some, they could either purchase a research permit, or have the rocks taken by force.

OOC: Brown, I guess. =PAlso, the properties won't even be noticed until experimentation, as the environment of Slacia is usually less than five degrees Celsius. =P Well, properties besides the radiation.

The Slacian Union/Preparation for World Domination and/or PeaceIC:

The rejection was somewhat expected. Either way, as long as the Stans didn't show aggression, the terms of coexistence would be fine. PVC most definitely intrigued the Slacians. It was a durable material, and they saw many possibilities for its usefulness. The Slacians welcomed by the nations of Kiserre and the Seasgate Empire docked and immediately went to work translating. In the latter empire, they gratefully accepted the spices and the dictionary and presented their own book of words.~•~The space program had begun. Industry was thriving, the people were excited. In only five or so years, give or take, they would have the prestige of landing a craft on Luna, earth's moon!~•~The only strange properties noted in Slacia were the properties of radiation. Still, the government sent out an order that all citizens to find a meteor must immediately tell officials. Radiation was radiation, after all. Plus, aluminum was a very useful metal, so having a much of rocks made of the stuff seemed ideal. However, from the few samples sent to laboratories to study the radiation - and the much larger amounts sent to forges - , the other properties were found. In hours upon the discovery, the government demanded more experimentation and immediate requisition. Whatever these rocks might be they had exceeding potential. Thus, the ones upon which experimentation wasn't being conducted were stored in a lead bunker.A small, civilian aircraft was sent to check the nearby massive continent to see if more meteors fell there.

OOC: Yup. Island 5.IC: The first reaction to the appearance of a foreign vessel was complete and utter confusion - as far as the Varangians knew, the world was comprised of their little archipelago, the ocean, and that was pretty much it. The idea of people from elsewhere in the world was just as foreign as the people themselves. The second reaction was made evident with a transmission that, to the foreigners, would be just as incomprehensible as their own transmission was to the Varangians. Based on the patrol boat moving away from the port, it could be inferred to either be an invitation to land - with the patrol boat serving as an escort - or a warning to go away - with the patrol boat serving as the incentive for listening to the warning.

OOCWait wait, three and a half years to the moon?Mate, you got your estimates a bit off. Assuming you put all your IP possible, which you've already begun on units so that's not possible, it takes two months. That equals to 60 days. Multiply that by 30 days, divide, and you get a number much closer to five years. But you have to use the 200 option, unless you want to mothball your new stuffs, which takes three months, or about 8-9 years ingame. And I'm a derp at my own game. The max IP anyone has right now is 150, meaning it's the four month option, or five months for you.

IC: The Kiserrais explorer craft, having went off in all directions, eventually discovered the lands of other nations. And then something else, more than an island. A stretch of land that went on and on, no matter how far the ships travelled. This most peculiar phenomenon was reported back to the mainland by one of the ships, as radio would not effectively reach across miles of ocean.OOC: The ships found the Anitalians and Slacians, who had already been greeted by the Union, and now the Syressans, the Varangians, the Stans, and the Aquileonese.IC: And then another thing was found adn reported: the two small islands that were fairly close to Kiserrais shores were inhabited. Newly inhabited. People could be seen on the islands, but very little was visible in the way of structures aside from basic tents and neccesarry prefabricated facilities. The Kiserrais on the ship could make out an emblem on nearly all everything, and while they could not recognise it themselves, this too was reported back to the homeland.

OOC: Quick question - where did the Slacian space program come from? The time it took us to reach the moon from the point we decided to go there isn't the whole story - we spent decades just getting rockets that were good enough to put something into space. That's one of the biggest reasons the Varangians aren't going nuts over space - the research to get a rocket with enough power behind it to propel something into space is expensive, and this is a society that hasn't even built an airplane yet.Rocketry was helped along by long-distance wars, which I guarantee you nobody here has had. For wars on these islands, launching a missile at the enemy is ridiculous compared to just driving a tank over there and hitting them with your sword.Unless somebody decided around the mid-1800s "Yup, we're going to go to space one day, better get on perfecting rocketry now", having a good enough space program to get to the moon in five years raises an eyebrow or two on my end of things.

OOC: Part of the premise of this game is that entry into space has already been achieved by a few of the nations. As the Slacians are loosely Russian-based, it would make sense for them to have a space program. They saw the stars, they wanted to go into space. Rocketry and other space-related sciences developed from there. And it will still take the same amount of time for the Slacians as anyone else to get an in-game space program going.
