First LEGO Nexo Knights Webisode: "Alliance of the Fortrex"

Recommended Posts

Hot on the heels of the trailer announcing the new Nexo Knights webisodes, the first of those webisodes has appeared, titled "Alliance of the Fortrex". In this five-minute video, the knights are dispatched from their rolling castle, Fortrex, to a village that Jestro and his monsters are raiding. But it may take a little help from Merlok 2.0, the Great Digital Wizard, for the knights to defeat the monsters and save the day. Follow the link above to watch the video!

Oh thank goodness, it's not terrible. Dunno if you could call it super great, but it works fine. I guess the PR people are just bad at making trailers.

Yeah. It's not perfect, but I wasn't instantly alienated like I was with the Chima TV series. And this is just a five-minute minisode, so hopefully the full episodes will be even better.

Hey look, multiple voice actors.

Just like Chima, the "big bang" theme that it directly replaces, or Ninjago, the "big bang" theme that both themes were modeld after. Bionicle, by contrast, was not a big-bang theme. It was a revival of a 15-year-old theme that had sputtered out near the end, and was replacing another five-year-old theme that itself was on the wane. It's no surprise that Bionicle 2015 had a much more reserved media push, that waited to gauge the theme's success before committing to a huge media budget. Considering that we're getting a larger Netflix series next year (which itself will assumedly get a full voice cast), that tactic seems to have paid off.

I've noticed that trailers for kids' properties often seem to try and upsell the goofiness/cheesiness. For instance, the trailers for "Up" understandably focused on the goofy dog and bird moreso than the heartfelt bonding story between a grumpy old man and eager boy scout. Trailers for some TV shows like Gravity Falls and Steven Universe are notorious for making even the most serious episodes sound like they're just going to be goofy, lighthearted filler. I don't know if this is a marketing strategy that genuinely works with kids, or if it's just some "conventional wisdom" that ad agencies have decided on, but I've basically come to expect it at this point. :P

Glad you liked this webisode! To be honest I felt like it could have stood to be a bit shorter, but that perception might have been colored by the fact that I was in a bit of a hurry to get the news story posted before going to see Santa with my younger cousins. The Ninjago webisodes from 2011 were just two minutes each, and the Elves webisodes from this year were three to four minutes each, so five minutes is longer than I was expecting or accustomed to.

Regardless, if this is just a free webisode, I've got high hopes for the actual TV series, which will surely be able to dig a bit deeper into characterization (TTV interviewed some of the creators during NYCC and it's clear from the video that they have a LOT of ideas for directions they want to take the characters).

does any else notice how actually fast the fortrex moves? like, yikes.

I mean, what's the point of having a moving castle if it moves at a snail's pace? :P

That power-up sequence was waaay too long.

I kind of agree, but there is a reason for that. Kids are supposed to get a chance to "scan" the Nexo Powers from the show into the game/app the same way they can with the ones in sets. As such, it's better to have it take an extra long time so that they can pause the episode and don't have to search for the one frame where it's complete and scannable.

To be honest, it reminds me a bit of the last time Lego attempted show/toy integration of this sort... that being the electronic Kek Powerizer from Galidor, which IIRC was supposed to react to the audio from the show. Though I think the way they're doing this has a lot more potential, esepcially since it doesn't rely on an expensive and mostly useless electronic action figure, but rather on a free app available for mobile devices that many kids will already have access to.

I dunno, I liked the forth wall breakage. It'll be a little refreshing if the show doesn't take itself too seriously like that. (I mean, Ninjago got away with it, but that was probably one of the flaws in Chima, IMO.)
