We watched some old home videos today.
Some memorable moments:
I'm seven and in school giving a presentation on Chinese New Year.
Me (on TV): "So anyway, xin nian hao! Happy new year! Happy new year means xin nian hao."
Me: "I think I got that a little backwards there."
Me (on TV): *points at poster* "This says 'xin nian hao' in Chinese. It looks like four words but it's supposed to be three words. I meant to write three words but I messed up."

There are forty of them. And counting.
Only some more refinements left for Shana herself! Gotta color the lineart and I want to bring up the contrast on some of the shading. After that I want to give it a halfway decent background. Wings of fire weren't as bad as I thought they'd be.
Anyway as you can tell I was pretty liberal with duplicating and adding layers here.
One last comparison.
Flats laid down, background blue is pretty much just placeholder (to make sure I didn't miss any spots).

Fwee, this is probably the fastest I've ever worked on a picture! I feel giddy.
Still undergoing some refinements, but that's basically it. The wings are left as sketches because they won't be outlined in the final colored version. How should I color it, winter or summer uniform?
So last night we went out to eat at Friday's. We were going to go to P.F. Chang's since my mom got a $50 giftcard for there from her boss for the holidays, but we don't eat out often so we didn't really plan ahead... we didn't make a reservation and when we got there it was an hour's wait. So in

I'm pretty proud of the hands. I'm not very good at hands but I think they came out nicely.
As you can probably tell, I gave up on trying to draw the long, smooth blade of the sword with the brush tool, so I did it with the pen tool instead. Might have to do that for her cloak and hair, too.
Speaking of which, I might redo parts of her hair to make it look better... man I wish I could draw like Noizi Ito, she's amazing.

Our Science Olympiad team placed 5th at the regionals, which means we advance to States!
For the two events I participated in, I got second for one and sixth for another. Surprisingly, the second place was for Remote Sensing, which I know like nothing about. I credit my partner with that second place. He did the conceptual questions since he actually knew the material, I took the math parts of the test off his hands.
While we got sixth, out of twenty teams that's not bad, and science pic
I'm screwed.
Hopefully I can make up for my inevitable failure at Remote Sensing with my performance in science term pictionary.

Feels so nice to be on my computer with its big monitor, actual mouse, and reasonable internet connection speed.
Ten hour car drive... blaaaaargh exhausting. Didn't get as much writing done as I wanted to, since I had a headache, although chapter 8 is almost finished, just gotta wrap it up. It's only the second one-scene chapter, the first being chapter 3.
