Do My Posts Count?

For the first time, I think my post count rank has slipped!   I was just checking the member list, where I ordered it by post count. From like 2005 to 2010, I was like in the top 70-80 posters on BZP. (Like, usually ten or so down on the second page with 60 members per page.) I mean, after the first couple years, I made progress, but for most years, I just made steady progress. I'd pass some members, and then other members would pass me. But I haven't been posting much this year, and it's a

The Hobbit, In Brief

Honestly, there's so much I could say about the Hobbit, both good and bad. But I'm really not in the mood to write all about it, so I'll keep it short.   It does a good job of keeping the feel from the LotR movies, but it also seems to be lacking some of the majesty. This may just be because it's the first; after all, Fellowship was arguably the worst of the three LotR movies. (And it was still pretty good.) The same here.   It's also different because they're including so much. In LotRs, t

Long Entry

I was gonna post this long detailed entry on this issue I've been having where my posts get eaten by the server...   But then the blog ate it.   I'll be filling out a ticket for this, methinks.   But later. it's been a busy week. Finals. My final finals. But I had 1 final essay to turn in by Saturday, 1 presentation to attend on Monday, 1 written final on Tuesday, 1 final project also due Tuesday, 1 short answer essay due Wednesday, 1 class discussion final (we had to orally take our fina

Ninjago Story Contest Entry

Woo Hoo, I managed to finish my story and enter it into the contest. Yay! You can read and review it Here.   What the Karzahni? I just wrote an extensive blog entry and then 90% of the text gets deleted when I posted it? Oh well, I guess I can go into the detailed about the story in a later entry. Suffice to say, I hope you'll take some time to read it, and I hope it does well in the contest. (It is quite long; the longest entry so far.)   So please review! Thanks! (Oh, and go enter the contest

Translations in Science Fiction

Okay, this is an odd topic but I was thinking about it and decided to spread said thoughts in a blog entry, so... yeah.   So. Science Fiction. You know how when humans meet a new alien species, the aliens tend to speak to them in English. Well, at least in cheap science fiction. Or if its a Japanese Anime, the aliens know Japanese. Its a problem that writers have to face when they make these first contacts. Of course they want some sort of communication between the two parties, but it's al

2 Weeks Left

1 week of regular school classes left, and then 1 week of finals.   And then I'm finished with college. I'll be graduating. Finally.   And I still have some pretty big projects to complete in that time, not to mention the tests. >.< Mostly I just want school to end so I can start the internship, get paid, and have a little spending money again!   Also random animation becuase I can:

Working on my Ninjago Story

Y'know, for that contest.   The problem; I'm already at 7 pages and I'm just now getting to the climax. And I haven't even done my whole big Green Ninja reveal yet either!   I know there's a lower limit of 500 words... but this might be pushing the upper limit a bit much. It might work better as a short epic instead of a looooooooong short story.

Actionscript

Am I trying to learn Actionscript just so I can recreate MNOLG-style Flash games?   Maybe   (Figured out how to create a moving target that has different affects depending on when you click it, and also how to scroll the background. PROGRESS!)

Ranger Risk

I met up with my old Park Ranger bosses tonight and played a couple of games of risk.   Short story: I lost. First time minorly, second time dreadfully.   Long Story: We did two games. For the first game, I took Africa, and fought valiantly over Egypt and the Middle East. But then the fighting in the Americas was decided, and they came storming in from Brazil and wiped me out. Then that guy basically had all the power, the rest of us were fairly spread thin, so we called it a game   The seco

Improved Toa Figs

Search back through my blog, you're probably find plenty of entries where I talked about my plans to make Toa minifigures.   Here's the basic idea. In 2001, they released Lego pens that came with mini Toa masks. It's possible to attach the masks (via a bead) to the top of a standard minifig torso. It's a little bulky, but it works.   However, while I was able to get the colors of the minifig parts relatively right, the plain torsos looked a bit off. So I wanted to fix that.   So I made a dea

Zetsuen no Tempest

Hey another anime entry from a guy who's getting into this but is still a newby to the whole American fanbase culture. Take it as you like, here are my thoughts.   If you don't trust the future Continue with that force What is left to learn now So do it   And when you look there's someone That's running by my side Spirit inspiration No I can't lose   So the latest Anime that I started following is Zetsuen no Tempest. The anime itself is intriguing. I like the basic plo

Looking For Apartments

Gosh, it sure is expensive to find a place to stay for three months in Dallas. So many factors to worry about. How close is it to my work? How much is rent? Is it furnished? No, okay, then where can I rent stuff like a bed? IT COST THAT MUCH! Screw it, I'll sleep on a cot. What's the Internet situation like? Is it in a good neighborhood? What stores are within walking distance? If I bring my car, where can I park it?   But most importantly.   What's its proximity to the closest Lego st

Sword Fight Story

I haven't blogged in a while, which is sad because that's the bulk of my BZP activity nowadays. My life is just that dull right now, and I have lots of school stuff to work on.   But anyway, November is the month of writing, according to NaNo. I didn't do it this year, but I did get 50,000+ words in 30 days done this summer. And hey why not take an excerpt from one that!   BACKSTORY   Not gonna post the whole thing, but here's the premise. The protagonist has snuck onto an enemy base, and he has

Horizon Express

I am not a train person. I cannot afford the set. I don't have the money for it, I don't have the room for it, and I don't even have any train tracks for it to run on. Me and Lego trains are not meant to be.   Mostly I just wanted to see how they managed to build those SNOT arrows on the side!!   Finally found a review where they took pictures of the building process, and I can safely say that "my mind = blown" when it comes to that technique. So awesome. Now I have to steal it.   Oh yeah

Falling of Skies

I wouldn't say I'm a huge Bond fan, but I went with my family to see the latest installment tonight.   I have a feeling I'll be against the grain on this one, but I didn't think it was a great Bond movie. Okay, it was still a decent movie, but for the most part it didn't have the "Bond" feel to it. Quantum of Solace did, and so did Casino Royal (even tho I didn't like that one very much.) But while this movie did have some great callbacks to the theme and cool action sequences, overall it fel

Compare: Dallas vs Portland

Okay, so I'm probably pretty biased because I love the Pacific Northwest a lot and I didn't really spend a whole lot of time in Dallas this weekend or get to see a whole lot of it, but when has this blog been about anything but my rambling thoughts?   Weather   I left Portland in rain, and Dallas was pleasant AT NIGHT. Winter weather down there is nice.   Winner: Dallas. (This one will totally change come summer, I expect)   Sidewalks   Portland has sidewalks, bike lanes, bike trails, bike l

Totally Need To Post to News

Man, I'm flying out tomorrow for an interview. Tomorrow morning. Bah, I dislike waking up early. Plus, I have to write a short essay, and I've had ideas for it flowing through my head all week, but now I just need to force it down in writing! In addition to that, I have a news story that I kind of need to work on before I leave... so yay long night. (I can sleep on the flight over, I guess, and it doesn't matter since the interview is actually on Monday morning so I can be rested and prepar

Internship

Yay, good news on the job front!   I applied for a few internships already for January 2013 (you know, considering we all don't go puff in December because of some Mayan god or something.) They're based in Dallas, and I had a phone interview, and now they want an in person interview, so they're flying me out there for a day. At this point they've got to be interested, right? I hope to do my best in said interview, and I'm excited to see what will come of it!   Also I may have mentioned in my

BrickCon People Caption Contest Part 6

Oh yeah, when I lock an entry, I don't get comments on it. Well, in that case, time to break out more BrickCon Photos!   Post something funny / witty / ironic as a caption for the photo, because you know you want to!   This time, it's Return of the Hat!   Part 6

BTW, Voted

Actually filled out my ballot last Friday, but got it put in the mail today.   And even tho I watched the full debate, my mind was already made up. (And having watch it, it just made me more determined to vote my way.)   That way being Obama. Also went generally Democrat for the state positions too. Especially hoping to replace my Republican Representative, whom I sent a letter to a year ago and got a response that boiled down to "thanks for contacting me, here is why I'm doing the exact oppo

Bohrok Pens

Oh god I'm doing it again...   Okay, anybody ever get one of those Bohrok pens from 02? I guess they're like the Toa pens, but they have these smaller Bohrok faceplate elements... and maybe a krana bead?   See, these might be useful pieces for building minifig-scale Bohrok. (Yeah, crazy idea, I know.) But there are so few images of them on the web, and I can't see the kind of detail for how they'd work. So if somebody has ever owned one, could they say what kind of unique pieces the pens inc

Kanoka Game

I was looking through my collection today, since I have a lot of stuff to put away after the conventions. That aside, I took interest in my collection of glow in the dark Kanoka discs, and I started to remember a game for them that I created back in 04. I know I've hinted about it before, but I've never downright posted the rules. So I spent some time revising the game today, and now have stuff to share with you.   Kanoka, of course, were the collectible discs from the Metru Nui saga, Ther
