  1. Thanks for the replies everybody! Honestly my most active years on here were '07-'10 under a different account which got deleted for reasons I can't really talk about. But I went by the username Cap'n Kopaka and I think my most memorable footprint on this website was those silly spinning leeches. Remember when signatures were only allowed to be, like, 100 pixels high because it was like 2009 and the server was probably a potato?

For anybody curious, I'll mention the game not by name. It's a weird personal/passion project about the internet. Right now I'm really trying to focus on less experimental stuff, just to get my name out there 🙂

  2. Actually, I've seen a LOT of praise for the Toa Metru, both as characters and as sets. The characters are praised for getting much more character development than the Mata in a shorter span of time. The sets are praised for having better articulation than the Toa Mata and less exaggerated proportions than the Toa Inika (although their shoulders were exaggeratedly wide, and Nokama, Nuju, and Lhikan had arms that were disproportionately small compared to their elongated torsos). Some of them also had dual-function weapons just like the Toa Nuva, although some like Nuju's and Whenua's became a lot more abstract in terms of what they were supposed to be.

The biggest fault of the Toa Metru, in my opinion, was that they had fairly bland, repetitive builds and color schemes. And their mask designs, proportions, and color schemes had little in common with the Turaga versions of the characters from 2001 — without knowing the character names, it'd be almost impossible to recognize that they were different versions of the same character.

Huh, well I guess I usually only see apathy or dislike toward the sets, which made me feel like I should stick up for my childhood faves, haha. Could be that I haven't been on BZP much lately and popular opinion has changed in the past several years.

The characters do seem like the most popular though for sure. I'm not sure if I'd consider them my favorite Toa team because I really love the Nuva and Mahri as well and I don't think I can pick favorites!

I do agree on your reasons why the sets are flawed though. Clone sets are always sort of boring IMO, and the Metru were some of the worst. Build variance was, what, an extra stud at the waist or a different neck orientation to make them slightly taller or shorter?

I would have really loved a very tall and lanky Onewa and a short but frail Whenua, and a short but stocky Matau. I guess the colors can't be helped much because Lego was going for a darker aesthetic, but using the Toa Mata's secondary colors as the Turaga's primary colors would've also carried over to their Toa forms I think.

One thing I'd do if I could make the Turaga/Metru designs more harmonious with one another is add a scope to Turaga Nuju's mask, since it's such a strong element to his Toa design.

  3. Let me just say that if it were another franchise I'd totally watch a psychic dinosaur movie. Specifically, like, a terrible b-movie. Heh.

    Jurassic Park though? Hm. Hmmmmmm.

While we're talking hard/soft I think Jurassic Park likes to think of itself as fairly hard so it's kind of weird they'd put something like that into it. Seems like something from James Cameron's Avatar even (or I guess Interstellar?), not like a Star Wars type magical force but more like trying to explain magic through fakey sciencey words.

Though I've never seen it so I dunno if that's how they handle psychic dinosaurs.

  4. :)

My headcanon for Kopaka's height does align with the heights of the sets, so if anything I think he's very tall and lanky.

I guess the pose I was working with, with Pohatu flexing his guns and all, worked better with him extra-tall. I'll definitely be playing around with body types more as I play around with this style. I like to see Pohatu as short, and muscular under a heavy layer of fat (despite his rather skinny build in set form). IMO the balls on his shoulders, upside-down torso, and extra pegs in the legs call to mind the creators trying to make him as physically wide as can be.

I guess Pohatu/Onua were short because of their unique builds. Being hunched over and all. Maybe along with adaptive armor, Artakha healed their scoliosis :P

  5. oh my goodness congratulations!!!!! thats so good to hear

    GRATS AGAIN

ive missed two nd a half doses this week and good god did i get super sensitive and emotional about everything orz

*so dont forget them D: *

oh gosh i havent been able to take my dose in weeks....my muscle's just completely rejecting the needle. bummer

  6. The idea of rebooting something old is pretty alluring. I'm guilty of never letting a project die as well, I'm constantly reworking stuff I dropped years ago because I thought the idea was stupid!

Bioni-Lords actually sounds...familiar? Did you ever post it on here?

If you think it's worth pursuing even just for yourself go for it :U

  7. How about a mask that allows you to absorb the ills from others into your own body?  The true mask of a hero...

Ooh, neat. I really like the idea of healers whose power isn't based upon removing damage, but instead transferring it from one target to another. Sort of where I was going with the elemental energy transfer mask. Perhaps it could be used in a more open-ended manner, like trading your own injuries to others to heal yourself? A jerk move against allies but it could be a weaponized form of healing, sort of like a draining attack.

@xccj: Duplicator? You mean like splitting a Vahki in half and repairing both halves to make two wholes? :P that's definitely a cool idea and I've definitely never thought of it but there might be some restriction in place as to how much it can repair. Like, restoring a lot of physical matter might be too tough, but I can see it kinda "cauterizing" the edges and making the mechanical parts of a machine work again?

What if Removes Poison was a bit less literal? You could maybe use it to diffuse mental unease, as if the problems floating around in someone's mind were a type of poison.

Ooh! Or: there's beneficial bacteria inside the human body, so maybe Matoran have a similar premise as well. If "poison" is open-ended, maybe beneficial microorganisms would be targeted. Use a Remove Poison Kanoka to...actually make somebody sick.

  8. I haven't ever played Kingdom Hearts but I believe KH1 and KH2 are the only game within the main storyline, the rest are spinoffs or mid-quels, but I may be wrong. They're both on PS2 (and maybe PS3 as a rerelease or something? It's definitely on Wikipedia or its own Wiki if you're interested).

As for Mega Man, The X series is a really faithful reproduction of the main series but with better controls and graphics, since they were for the SNES and not the NES. Many prefer the main series because it's more iconic, and I am a big fan of MM2 and MM3, but I think the X series is better designed and equally influential. The Robot Masters (core series) are better than the Mavericks (X) though, imo.

Legend of Mana is an RPG on Playstation with really beautiful 2D graphics. It has roaming enemies rather than random encounters (speaking of which: I've heard Chrono Trigger works like this and I've heard good things about it) and a unique sort of map system. The overall structure reminds me of Golden Sun, honestly, it makes great use of the color depth and it's an RPG that happened toward the end of the sprite era that really started testing the waters before 3d rpgs were common.

  9. Pikmin 3 is one of the best Wii U titles out there IMO. Can't think of any others but it's my favorite game for the console save maybe Mario Kart 8. Which is also very good.

There's loads of games for Virtual Console too if you're looking at any game that you can download on Wii U. Just off the top of my head there's Earthbound, Super Mario 64, Golden Sun, several Mega Man games, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars.........

  10. Fire Emblem is a great series. The best starting point I think is Awakening, even though it's the most recent. It's the easiest to obtain save for the ones that have been released on virtual console. After that I'd recommend the original or Path of Radiance (which may be hard to find a cheap copy of as it's a sort of rare Game Cube release).

As for Final Fantasy, the best IN MY QUITE HUMBLE OPINION are 2, 3, and 7. I haven't gotten around to playing 10 or 13 but I've heard extremely mixed stuff about both so it's probably a matter of opinion? Anyway my personal favorite is 3, and the DS version (an excellent remake imo) is actually available on Steam. So is 4, which is decent. 7 is also on Steam. It can be -kind of- over the top but that's part of the charm of 7, 8, and 9 imo.

If you do like Final Fantasy, you might want to try out Golden Sun or The Legend of Mana, both very iconic RPGs that follow the FF formula. There's also Bravely Default, a recent RPG which I really like. It's got a WHOLE lot of customization as far as job/weapon/ability goes and the story is alright.

I notice you like Mother and are playing some Metroid games. I'd highly recommend Super Metroid, it's one of the greatest exploration platformers of all time IMO and has a similar dark/psychological feel. It's certainly not as feel-good as the Mother series can be though. I'm not a big fan of Metroid 1 but it's similar. They're both on the virtual console.

If you end up liking the Ace Attorney series, Layton vs. Ace Attorney is very good. I'm not too fond of Professor Layton games but it holds up very well and doesn't come across as any less good than games from either series. Likewise Apollo Justice and Dual Destinies are good too.

    Happy gaming :U

  11. ! ! !

I watched Gatchaman Crowds like last week and really liked it. I was skimming this post before reading what you said at the beginning and was like "wait is this Rui" and then "oh man it's Rui." It's really good cosplay!

Also hey it's a Dave ALPHA MALE. And. Pohatu is a nipple, alright.

thanks! im really getting back into sewing lately. this is my first really good handmade costume i think.

have you heard about insight? gcrowds season 2, its coming out like... next month?

  12. The idea of rebelling against destiny is kind of messed up imo.........like don't get me wrong, i love the idea but there's only two options:

-the prophesied "destiny" was false and you're actually fulfilling your true destiny

-you fail to rebel against destiny, you just can't beat it

I mean ultimately destiny is just cause and effect, I think. The idea that some are "destined" to become Toa, or something's "destined" to transform when it touches Energized Protodermis, it basically just means "these things are supposed to happen according to the Grand Timeline." Like, the reason alternate timelines are different is because destiny is different there.

It's kind of weird using a word like "destiny" to describe how you're more or less a slave to the timeline, but in a super optimistic light? Works that deal heavily with time travel or prophecy typically touch on that (see: Homestuck, for instance) but focus on the negatives a lot. If a timeline is concrete and can't be changed, how messed up is it to witness your own death and the deaths of your friends and know that's how it HAS to go down?

Interesting how the Matoran put a positive spin on it. I wonder if other cultures, the Skakdi or Zyglak for instance, view destiny with scorn, considering they're not Mata Nui's "chosen" species?

It's a little part of "Bionicle culture" that's pretty cool, I think.

  13. It's not for everyone but why not make it meaningful? Not necessarily as heavy-handed as, say, Ace Attorney or Harry Potter where everything is a goofy pun, but you can put a lot of worldbuilding into your names.

Just a suggestion. Something vague enough that not many people will pick up on it but the people who do will appreciate the little extra thought, or whatever.

  14. The original idea is (sort of) kind of a cool idea, imo, even though you were just joking. Like, Scream pulled it off, giving Drew Barrymore top billing and having her murdered right from the start. Sort of poking fun at the "big name actress final girl" idea.

Anyway I'd like to see something like this--a story where all synopses and such hint that it's a story about the hero, but it's actually about the villain after they overcome the villain in the first half.

Alternatively -- a damsel in distress whose superhero boyfriend dies early on and she inherits his powers? But all the publicity just shows the costumed hero or something.

Something like that. Bait and switch the viewers. If not necessarily the gimmick with the most integrity, it'd be kind of cool to trick an audience like that.
