  1. And of course the Emoji Movie is my thing!  Do you not watch Jacksfilms?  I'm totally watching it!

Oh for the love of god, tell me that you're aware that Jacksfilms has just been trolling everyone. Even Sony knows this! That's why they invited him to the premier - so they could convince other people to go see it for the ironic lols, even though the movie is so awful that there isn't even any "The Room" kind of fun to be had.

Also, having just seen Dunkirk myself today, I could not disagree with your review more. It's the best Nolan movie since Inception, and perhaps even the Dark Knight. I know that doesn't mean a lot to you, but it does to me.

  2. The MNOG does not follow all of the rules that Greg F. retroactively set for Bionicle. Another interesting example of this is the way it handles elemental powers. They are depicted as being directly channeled through their tools into the physical world. Tahu combusts the gasses in the air, Gali gathers moisture from the air, Kopaka chills the moisture in the air, etc. And the Toa most tied to the visible world - Onua and Pohatu - directly interact with the ground beneath their feet, creating earthquakes or kicking rocks. And when that isn't an option, such as when Onua challenged Lewa inside the Nui-Rama hive, they are forced to use melee combat and mask powers. They outright can not just manifest earth walls or stone boulders into existence from nowhere, because Toa power is a retcon.

Ignoring the sets (and the MNOG) may have been the norm post-Mask of Light, but it's quite clear that they were far more closely aligned with the Bionicle canon in the early days of the franchise.

  3. I think it's a mistake to lump in the glatorian heads with the heads that came afterwards in Hero Factory and Bionicle G2. See, the Glatorian heads on their own are easily the least useful of any constraction-based head, because they break so gosh-darned easily. The Brain attack heads and the G2 heads use the CCBS socket type that doesn't break, and thus they're comparatively way more useful in the long run.

But, to answer your question: probably the 2004-2008 heads, AKA the toa metru heads.

  4.

That dog has a face for a tail.

The Turaga had faces on their feet. The Muaka / Kane-Ra had faces on their shoulders. Takanuva put his friend's decapitated face on the front of his bike.

This dog's got nothing on them.

    :music:

I think out of all of them, Takanuva really needs an intermission or something. When had his big ol' growth spurt, he proceeded to kill two Barraki and wear their skulls on his shoulders. So much for the Toa code!

  5. I prefer Batman Begins, and I've always felt like I was the only person who didn't get the hype of The Dark Knight. I feel validated by this post.

    sixth favorite Batman film.

.... hold on a minute, let refresh myself. Out of all the good batman films, you have.... Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Rises, Batman, Batman Returns, and The Adam West Batman. I..... suppose I could understand ranking The Dark Knight below all of these. Just please tell me you aren't ranking it below Batman Forever or Batman and Robin.

Don't forget LEGO Batman, Mask of the Phantasm, and (debatable but still) BvS.

You sure bet its debatable, In fact, I'll go on record as saying that I'd rather have bat nipples than whoever that Punisher ripoff was in Dawn of Injustice.

  8. Well, to be fair, Viktor Antonov consulted on the game apparently. You may recognize him as the guy who designed City 17, or the guy who designed the cities in the dishonored series. It's not quite level design, but it'd be silly to

discount Half-Life influence when you're working with the guy responsible to some of its aesthetic.

Indeed. He's also the reason Dishonored's Tallboys look like Combine peacekeepers wearing Strider exo-skeletons.

  9.

I doubt I'll ever get around to even doing a no human or no alien upgrades run, so mad props to you for foregoing them both. I'm curious though, does it give the achievements for all three (no human, no alien, no upgrades at all) if you do the latter type of playthrough? Or do you actually have to replay the game an additional time for each type of run?

Split Affinity actually requires you to install only human and only typhon neuromods in separate playthroughs, so No Needles doesn't qualify for either. However, since Typhon Only would be The Worst, I went ahead and just saved at the very end of No Needles, completed it, came back, installed Mimic Matter and such, and then completed it again.

A bit "unethical," sure, but I wasn't gonna play the game twice without the q-beam

Honestly, I don't blame you, and I think that's what I'll probably do myself, if I ever get around to replaying the game. I have to beat it first, though - I've been taking my sweet time exploring every nook and cranny and completing side quests. I think Talos 1 might be the most engaging setting I've experienced in a video game since Half Life 2. Actually, having never played System Shock, a whole bunch of the game reminds me of the Half Life series - right down to the little test chamber in one area where you can use the Tau Canon... I mean... Q--Beam, on a contained headcrab ... ahem.... mimic.

  11. how you should feel about this is angry

    very angry

Personally, I'm holding in my rage until the movie comes out.. Because with Sony's track record as of late, there's a very reasonable chance that this movie could fail or at least under perform. Which would mean that Sony Pictures is still doomed, and thus there's no reason to be super angry.

  12. I loved it. Best Marvel sequel in a decade, not counting the Captain America movies. But I give James Gunn extra credit because he managed to do what Jon Faraveu and Joss Whedon failed to do.

    Regarding the villain:

I think it's clear from his entire motivation - heck, from his very name - that Ego can't even comprehend why what he is doing is so terrible. On the contrary: I think he believes he is doing the universe a favor by ensuring its immortality, even if it means the death of all other life as we know it. And he assumed that his own flesh and blood would get with the program, or at least hesitate to throw away the PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWER for the sake of mere mortal attachments. His last words to Quill before his death pretty much say it all.

  13. I second Iruini's compliments. Not just because your linguistic creativity is awe-inspiring, but also because your highlighting of mounds of fantastic Bionicle fan-art has shown me that the Bionicle fanbase isn't dead after all. I guess I just assumed that because BZPower is on life support. It appears I've been out of the loop, 'cause I really don't do the tumblr thing. Maybe I should start though. :)

  14. SPIRIT, I'm not sure how that line could possibly be in the last scene of the movie, since the Last Jedi is clearly going to end with....

Rey and Finn-with-a-robotic-arm gazing out a medical frigate window, as Chewbacca and Kelly Marie Tran's character fly away in the Millennium falcon to find where Kylo Ren has taken a carbonite-frozen Poe Dameron

  15.

A quick Google Search reveals that Barrakuta is a World of Warcraft player.  If Lego had used this name, it would have been disrespectful to the culture of native World of Warcraft players and could have resulted in a lot of negative press.  In order to be culturally sensitive to the World of Warcraft players, Lego opted to use the name Makuta Fish.

This is definitely what happened and not a case of "oh shoot, I forgot we already used the name 'Makuta' for that other guy.  Ehhh, maybe no one will notice and if they do we'll get Greg to contrive an explanation in about 3 years when everyone's already forgotten."

I was under the impression that they were named after the villain Makuta both in and out of canon? I'm pretty sure they were first mentioned in Bionicle Chronicles #4, which was written by Greg Farshtey in 2003 when Makuta was very much in the forefront of the story. I can't recall the exact context in which they were introduced, but I thought it was mentioned specifically that they were named after Makuta because of their ugly appearance and vicious nature.

Indeed, but he's probably just jesting anyway. And if not,  Mata-Nui fishing bird would like to have a word with you, Spirit.
